Abstract:We report on the theoretical and experimental investigation of valley-selective optical Stark and Bloch-Siegert shifts of exciton resonances in monolayers WSe$_2$ and MoS$_2$ induced by strong circularly polarized nonresonant optical fields. We predict and observe transient shifts of both 1sA and 1sB exciton transitions in the linear interaction regime. The theoretical description is based on semiconductor Bloch equations. The solutions of the equations are obtained with a modified perturbation technique, which takes into account many-body Coulomb interaction effects. These solutions allow to explain the polarization dependence of the shifts and calculate their values analytically. We found experimentally the limits of the applicability of the theoretical description by observing the transient exciton spectra change due to many-body effects at high field amplitudes of the driving wave.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on two aspects: 1. **Combined theoretical and experimental study of the valley - selective optical Stark effect (OS) and Bloch - Siegert shift (BS) in monolayer WSe₂ and MoS₂**: - **Theoretical part**: The paper proposes a theoretical model based on the semiconductor Bloch equations (SBE) to explain the transient displacements of 1sA and 1sB exciton transitions induced by a strong non - resonant circularly polarized light field. This model takes into account the multi - body Coulomb interaction effect and solves the equations by a modified perturbation technique to calculate the displacement values analytically. - **Experimental part**: Through transient reflectivity measurements, the transient displacements of 1sA and 1sB exciton transitions in monolayer WSe₂ and MoS₂ were observed, and the predictions of the theoretical model were verified. 2. **Improving the deficiencies in previous studies**: - **Providing an analytical expression for the transition dipole moment matrix element**: Most of the transition dipole moment matrix elements used in previous studies were obtained by fitting experimental data, while this paper provides a theoretical calculation method independent of experiments. - **Considering the multi - body Coulomb interaction effect**: The previous two - level model ignored the Coulomb multi - body effect and the screening effect of Coulomb interaction in TMD monolayers, while these effects are included in the model of this paper. - **Determining the scope of application of the theoretical description**: In this paper, the change of the transient exciton spectrum of the driving wave at high field strengths was experimentally observed, and the applicable limit of the theoretical description was determined. - **Discussing B exciton transitions**: In addition to A exciton transitions, this paper also discusses B exciton transitions in detail, which was less involved in previous studies. ### Main contributions of the paper - **Improvement of the theoretical model**: A more comprehensive theoretical model was proposed, which not only considered the analytical expression of the transition dipole moment matrix element, but also considered the multi - body Coulomb interaction and the screening effect of Coulomb interaction. - **Experimental verification**: The predictions of the theoretical model were verified by experimental data, especially the nonlinear effects at high field strengths. - **Extension of the research scope**: Not only A exciton transitions were focused on, but also B exciton transitions were discussed in detail, filling the gaps in previous studies. ### Formula examples - **Rabi frequency**: \[ \hbar \omega_{R,k}^{\tau} = d_{cv}^{\tau} E_{\pm}^{\tau}(t) + \sum_{q \neq k} V_{k - q} P_q^{\tau} \] where \( d_{cv}^{\tau}=\tau d_{cv} \) is the transition dipole moment between the valence band and the conduction band, and \( E_{\pm}^{\tau}(t)=E(t)\exp(\mp i\tau\omega t) \) is the electric field of circularly polarized light. - **Effective energy parameter**: \[ \hbar e_k^{\tau}=\tilde{E}_g+\frac{\hbar^2 k^2}{2m}-2\sum_{q} V_{k - q} n_q^{\tau} \] where \( m = \frac{m_e m_h}{m_e + m_h} \) is the reduced mass of the exciton, and \( \tilde{E}_g \) is the band gap of the system. Through these improvements and detailed theoretical and experimental analyses, this paper provides new insights into understanding and controlling the valley - selective optical effects in two - dimensional transition - metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayer materials.
