Abstract:In this paper we describe an algorithm for computing the left, right, or 2-sided congruences of a finitely presented semigroup or monoid with finitely many classes, and alternative algorithm when the finitely presented semigroup or monoid is finite. We compare the two algorithms presented to existing algorithms and implementations. The first algorithm is a generalization of Sims' low index subgroup algorithm for finding the congruences of a monoid. The second algorithm involves determining the distinct principal congruences, and then finding all of their possible joins. Variations of this algorithm have been suggested in numerous contexts by numerous authors. We show how to utilise the theory of relative Green's relations, and a version of Schreier's Lemma for monoids, to reduce the number of principal congruences that must be generated as the first step of this approach. Both of the algorithms described in this paper are implemented in the GAP package Semigroups, and the first algorithm is available in the C++ library libsemigroups and in its python bindings libsemigroups_pybind.

Abstract:In this paper we present an algorithm for computing a congruence on an inverse semigroup from a collection of generating pairs. This algorithm uses a myriad of techniques from computational group theory, automata, and the theory of inverse semigroups. An initial implementation of this algorithm outperforms existing implementations by several orders of magnitude.

Abstract:We consider semigroup algorithmic problems in finitely generated metabelian groups. Our paper focuses on three decision problems introduced by Choffrut and Karhum\"{a}ki (2005): the Identity Problem (does a semigroup contain a neutral element?), the Group Problem (is a semigroup a group?) and the Inverse Problem (does a semigroup contain the inverse of a generator?). We show that all three problems are decidable for finitely generated sub-semigroups of finitely generated metabelian groups. In particular, we establish a correspondence between polynomial semirings and sub-semigroups of metabelian groups using an interaction of graph theory, convex polytopes, algebraic geometry and number theory. Since the Semigroup Membership problem (does a semigroup contain a given element?) is known to be undecidable in finitely generated metabelian groups, our result completes the decidability characterization of semigroup algorithmic problems in metabelian groups.

Abstract:Let $\mathscr{C}_{+}(a,b)$ be the submooid of the bicyclic monoid which which is studied in \cite{Makanjuola-Umar=1997}. We describe monoid endomorphisms of the semigroup $\mathscr{C}_{+}(a,b)$ which are generated by the family of all congruences of the bicyclic monoid and all injective monoid endomorphisms of $\mathscr{C}_{+}(a,b)$.

Abstract:This paper enriches the list of properties of the congruence sequences starting from the universal relation and successively performing the operations of lower $t$ and lower $k$. Three classes of completely regular semigroups, namely semigroups for which $\ker{\sigma}$ is a cryptogroup, semigroups for which $\ker{\nu}$ is a cryptogroup and semigroups for which $\kappa$ is over rectangular bands, are studied. $((\omega_t)_k)_t$, $((\mathcal{D}_t)_k)_t$ and $((\omega_k)_t)_k$ are found to be the least congruences on $S$ such that the quotient semigroups are semigroups for which $\ker{\sigma}$ is a cryptogroup, $\ker{\nu}$ is a cryptogroup and $\kappa$ is over rectangular bands, respectively. The results obtained present a response to three problems in Petrich and Reilly's textbook \textquoteleft\textquoteleft Completely Regular Semigroups\textquoteright\textquoteright.
Answering Five Open Problems Involving Semigroup Conjugacy

Abstract:A semigroup conjugacy is an equivalence relation that equals group conjugacy when the semigroup is a group. In this note, we answer five open problems related to semigroup conjugacy. (Problem One) We say a conjugacy ~ is partition-covering if for every set X and every partition of the set, there exists a semigroup with universe X such that the partition gives the ~-conjugacy classes of the semigroup. We prove that six well-studied conjugacy relations -- ~o, ~c, ~n, ~p, ~p*, and ~tr -- are all partition-covering. (Problem Two) For two semigroup elements a and b in S, we say a ~p b if there exists u and v in S such that a=uv and b=vu. We give an example of a semigroup that is embeddable in a group for which ~p is not transitive. (Problem Three) We construct an infinite chain of first-order definable semigroup conjugacies. (Problem Four) We construct a semigroup for which ~o is a congruence and Sõ is not cancellative. (Problem Five) We construct a semigroup for which ~p is not transitive while, for each of the semigroup's variants, ~p is transitive.

Conjugacy in Semigroups: the Partition and Brauer Diagram Monoids, Conjugacy Growth, and Partial Inner Automorphisms

Abstract:The conjugacy relation plays an important role in group theory. If $a$ and $b$ are elements of a group~$G$, $a$ is conjugate to $b$ if $g^{-1}ag=b$ for some $g\in G$. Group conjugacy extends to inverse semigroups in a natural way: for $a$ and $b$ in an inverse semigroup $S$, $a$ is conjugate to $b$ if $g^{-1}ag=b$ and $gbg^{-1}=a$ for some $g\in S$. The fourth author has recently defined a conjugacy for an arbitrary semigroup $S$ that coincides with inverse semigroup conjugacy if $S$ is an inverse semigroup, and is included in all existing semigroup conjugacy relations. We will call it the \emph{natural conjugacy} for semigroups, and denote it by $\cfn$. The first purpose of this paper is to study $\cfn$ in various contexts, chiefly the partition monoid and some of its friends (Brauer and partial Brauer monoids), and also to characterize $\cfn$ in several important classes of semigroups, transformation semigroups and in the polycyclic monoids. The second purpose of this paper is to show how the notion of natural conjugacy leads to the definition of the inverse semigroup of partial automorphisms of an arbitrary semigroup (in the same way conjugation in groups induces the notion of inner automorphism). Attached to the majority of mathematical objects there is a notion of {\em morphism} and hence notions of automorphism and endomorphism that often encode relevant information about the original object. Our approach allows to attach to the endomorphisms of a mathematical object an inverse semigroup that hopefully will bring the deep results on inverse semigroups to help the study of the original object. Finally we extend the notion of conjugacy growth from groups to semigroups and give closed formulas for the conjugacy growth series of the polycyclic monoid, for $\cfn$ and two other semigroup conjugacies. The paper ends with some open problems.

Abstract:A monoid $M$ generated by a set $S$ of symbols can be described as the set of equivalence classes of finite words in $S$ under some relations that specify when some contiguous sequence of symbols can be replaced by another. If $a,b\in S$, a relation of the form $ab=ba$ is said to be a \emph{commutation relation}. Words that are equivalent using only a sequence of commutation relations are said to be in the same \emph{commutation class}. We introduce certain partially ordered sets that we call \emph{word posets} that capture the structure of commutation classes in monoids. The isomorphism classes of word posets are seen to be in bijective correspondence with the commutation classes, and we show that the linear extensions of the word poset correspond bijectively to the words in the commutation class, using which we demonstrate that enumerating the words in commutation classes of monoids is #P-complete. We then apply the word posets to Coxeter groups. We show that the problem of enumerating the reduced words of elements of Coxeter groups is #P-complete. We also demonstrate a method for finding the word posets for commutation classes of reduced words of an element, then use this to find a recursive formula for the number of commutation classes of reduced words.

Abstract:Graph inverse semigroups generalize the polycyclic inverse monoids and play an important role in the theory of C*-algebras. This paper has two main goals: first, to provide an abstract characterization of graph inverse semigroups; and second, to show how they may be completed, under suitable conditions, to form what we call the Cuntz-Krieger semigroup of the graph. This semigroup is the ample semigroup of a topological groupoid associated with the graph, and the semigroup analogue of the Leavitt path algebra of the graph.

Abstract:Stallings folding theory is modified, using double coset representatives, and to applied to the study of subgroups of amalgamated products of finite rank free groups. As a first application the subgroup membership problem for such groups is shown to be decidable. An algorithm for this problem is constructed and its complexity is analysed. Groups in this class are also shown to possess the Howson property.

Abstract:In this paper, we first study some properties peculiar to $C_{0}$--semigroups of continuous module homomorphisms and give a characterization for such a $C_{0}$--semigroup to be almost surely bounded. Then, based on these, we establish the Hille-Yosida generation theorem for almost surely bounded $C_{0}$--semigroups of continuous module homomorphisms, which generalizes some known results. Moreover, the counterexample constructed in this paper also shows that it is necessary to require the almost sure boundedness for such $C_{0}$--semigroups.

Abstract:In this paper we deal with the following problem: how does the structure of a finite semigroup $S$ depend on the probability that two elements selected at random from $S$, with replacement, define the same inner right translation of $S$. We solve a subcase of this problem. As the main result of the paper, we show how to construct not necessarily finite medial semigroups in which the index of the kernel of the right regular representation equals two.

Abstract:Let $\mathsf{J(C)}$ be the poset of order ideals of a cominuscule poset $\mathsf{C}$ where $\mathsf{C}$ comes from two of the three infinite families of cominuscule posets or the exceptional cases. We show that the Auslander-Reiten translation $\tau$ on the Grothendieck group of the bounded derived category for the incidence algebra of the poset $\mathsf{J(C)}$, which is called the \emph{Coxeter transformation} in this context, has finite order. Specifically, we show that $\tau^{h+1}=\pm id$ where $h$ is the Coxeter number for the relevant root system.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. Let [math] be a group. If the set [math] forms a subgroup of [math], then G is called [math]-group. Recently, it has been proven that the minimum coclass of a non-[math][math]-group is equal to [math]. In this paper, we deal with finite [math]-groups of coclass [math]. We prove that a finite [math]-group [math] of order [math], [math], of coclass [math] for an odd prime [math] is an [math]-group except when the nilpotency class of the second term of upper central series [math], [math], is equal to [math]. In particular, we show that in this case, center of [math], [math], and commutator subgroup [math], [math], are of order [math] and [math], respectively, and [math] is a group of order [math]. Also, we give some sufficient conditions on a finite 2-group [math] of coclass [math] implying that [math] is an [math]-group.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a series of matching theorems for two sets of Coxeter generators of a finitely generated Coxeter group that identify common features of the two sets of generators. As an application, we describe an algorithm for finding a set of Coxeter generators of maximum rank for a finitely generated Coxeter group.

Abstract:If $\mathcal{C}$ is a category of algebras closed under finite direct products, and $M_\mathcal{C}$ the commutative monoid of isomorphism classes of members of $\mathcal{C},$ with operation induced by direct product, A.Tarski defines a nonidentity element $p$ of $M_\mathcal{C}$ to be prime if, whenever it divides a product of two elements in that monoid, it divides one of them, and calls an object of $\mathcal{C}$ prime if its isomorphism class has this property. McKenzie, McNulty and Taylor ask whether the category of nonempty semigroups has any prime objects. We show in section 2 that it does not. However, for the category of monoids, and some other subcategories of semigroups, we obtain examples of prime objects in sections 3-5 In section 6, two related questions open so far as I know, are recalled. In section 7, which can be read independently of the rest of this note, we recall two related conditions that are called primeness by semigroup theorists, and obtain results and examples on the relationships among those two conditions and Tarski's, in categories of groups. Section 8 notes an interesting characterization of one of those conditions when applied to finite algebras in an arbitrary variety. Various questions are raised.

Heights of one- and two-sided congruence lattices of semigroups

Abstract:The height of a poset $P$ is the supremum of the cardinalities of chains in $P$. The exact formula for the height of the subgroup lattice of the symmetric group $\mathcal{S}_n$ is known, as is an accurate asymptotic formula for the height of the subsemigroup lattice of the full transformation monoid $\mathcal{T}_n$. Motivated by the related question of determining the heights of the lattices of left- and right congruences of $\mathcal{T}_n$, we develop a general method for computing the heights of lattices of both one- and two-sided congruences for semigroups. We apply this theory to obtain exact height formulae for several monoids of transformations, matrices and partitions, including: the full transformation monoid $\mathcal{T}_n$, the partial transformation monoid $\mathcal{PT}_n$, the symmetric inverse monoid $\mathcal{I}_n$, the monoid of order-preserving transformations $\mathcal{O}_n$, the full matrix monoid $\mathcal{M}(n,q)$, the partition monoid $\mathcal{P}_n$, the Brauer monoid $\mathcal{B}_n$ and the Temperley-Lieb monoid $\mathcal{TL}_n$.

Abstract:In recent papers we have refined a conjecture of Lehrer and Solomon expressing the characters of a finite Coxeter group $W$ afforded by the homogeneous components of its Orlik-Solomon algebra as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$. Our refined conjecture also relates the Orlik-Solomon characters above to the terms of a decomposition of the regular character of $W$ related to the descent algebra of $W$. A consequence of our conjecture is that both the regular character of $W$ and the character of the Orlik-Solomon algebra have parallel, graded decompositions as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$. The refined conjecture has been proved for symmetric and dihedral groups. In this paper we develop algorithmic tools to prove the conjecture computationally for a given finite Coxeter group. We use these tools to verify the conjecture for all finite Coxeter groups of rank three and four, thus providing previously unknown decompositions of the regular characters and the Orlik-Solomon characters of these groups.
