Abstract:We construct infinite families of pairs of (geometrically non-isogenous) elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with $12$-torsion subgroups that are isomorphic as Galois modules. This extends previous work of Chen and Fisher where it is assumed that the underlying isomorphism of $12$-torsion subgroups respects the Weil pairing. Our approach is to compute explicit birational models for the modular diagonal quotient surfaces which parametrise such pairs of elliptic curves. A key ingredient in the proof is to construct simple (algebraic) conditions for the $2$, $3$, or $4$-torsion subgroups of a pair of elliptic curves to be isomorphic as Galois modules. These conditions are given in terms of the $j$-invariants of the pair of elliptic curves.

Abstract:We discuss the $\ell$-adic case of Mazur's "Program B" over $\mathbb{Q}$, the problem of classifying the possible images of $\ell$-adic Galois representations attached to elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, equivalently, classifying the rational points on the corresponding modular curves. The primes $\ell=2$ and $\ell\ge 13$ are addressed by prior work, so we focus on the remaining primes $\ell = 3, 5, 7, 11$. For each of these $\ell$, we compute the directed graph of arithmetically maximal $\ell$-power level modular curves $X_H$, compute explicit equations for all but three of them, and classify the rational points on all of them except $X_{\rm ns}^{+}(N)$, for $N = 27, 25, 49, 121$, and two level $49$ curves of genus $9$ whose Jacobians have analytic rank $9$.

Towards a classification of entanglements of Galois representations attached to elliptic curves

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve, let $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ be a fixed algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $G_{\mathbb{Q}}=\text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ be the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$. The action of $G_{\mathbb{Q}}$ on the adelic Tate module of $E$ induces the adelic Galois representation $\rho_E\colon G_{\mathbb{Q}} \to \text{GL}(2,\widehat{\mathbb{Z}}).$ The goal of this paper is to explain how the image of $\rho_E$ can be smaller than expected. To this end, we offer a group theoretic categorization of different ways in which an entanglement between division fields can be explained and prove several results on elliptic curves (and more generally, principally polarized abelian varieties) over $\mathbb{Q}$ where the entanglement occurs over an abelian extension.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of inertial equivalence for integral $\ell$-adic representation of the Galois group of a global field. We show that the collection of continuous, semisimple, pure $\ell$-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of a global field lifting a fixed absolutely irreducible residual representation and with given inertial type outside a fixed finite set of places is uniformly bounded independent of the inertial type.

Abstract:Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field, and fix a prime $p > 3$ that does not divide the class number of $K$. In this paper we prove that Iwasawa's $\lambda$-invariant for the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ is greater than $1$ if and only if the number of points on a certain reduced elliptic curve is divisible by $p^2$.

Abstract:We analyze the fields of definition of cyclic isogenies on elliptic curves to prove the following uniformity result: for any number field $F_0$ which satisfies an isogeny condition, there exists a constant $B:=B(F_0)\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ such that for any finite extension $L/F_0$ whose degree $[L:F_0]$ is coprime to $B$, one has for all elliptic curves $E_{/F_0}$ with $j$-invariant $\neq 0, 1728$ that any $L$-rational cyclic isogeny on $E$ must be $F_0$-rational. We also prove unconditional results for the mod-$\ell$ Galois representations of non-CM elliptic curves with an $F_0$-rational $\ell$-isogeny when $\ell$ is uniformly large.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $F$ be $\mathbb{Q}$ or an imaginary quadratic field with certain conditions. Our research object in this article is the ideal class group $\mathrm{Cl}(F_E)$ of the $p$-division field $F_E := F(E[p])$ of $E$ over $F$ for an odd prime number $p$. More precisely, we investigate the non-vanishing of the $E[p]$-component in the semi-simplification of $\mathrm{Cl}(F_E)/p\mathrm{Cl}(F_E)$ as an $\mathbb{F}_p[\mathrm{Gal}(F_E/F)]$-module when $E[p]$ is an irreducible $\mathrm{Gal}(F_E /F)$-module. When the analytic rank of $E$ over $F$ is 1, we establish a new relationship between the non-vanishing of the $E[p]$-component and the p-divisibility of a certain $p$-adic analytic quantity associated with $E$. The quantity is defined by the leading coefficient of the cyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function of $E$ when $F = \mathbb{Q}$ and by that of the anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function of $E$ when $F$ is the imaginary quadratic field.

Abstract:Let r>2 and l be primes. In this paper we study the mod l Galois representations attached to curves of the form y^r = f(x) where f is monic and has coefficients belonging to the r-th cyclotomic field. We provide conditions on the coefficients (and degree) of f which allow one to verify the mod l image is large outside of a (typically small) finite explicit set of primes. We allow all values of r for which the r-th cyclotomic field has odd class number. This appears to be the first explicit result for abelian varieties of dimension greater than two and not of GL_2-type which allows the ground field to have unramified extensions. In proving the large image result we give a classification of the maximal subgroups containing transvections of certain classical groups and describe (in many cases) the images of inertia groups. The exact mod l image is governed by the "endomorphism character", a certain algebraic Hecke character which generalises the CM character. When r=3, we depict the image in its entirety. To the author's knowledge, this is the first accurate description in the literature. Finally, we give several examples with genus ranging from 10 to 36. Applications to the Inverse Galois Problem are also included.

Abstract:Let $q\geq2$ be a prime power and consider Drinfeld modules of rank 2 over $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We prove that there are no points with coordinates being Drinfeld singular moduli, on a family of hyperbolas $XY=\gamma$, where $\gamma$ is a polynomial of small degree. This is an effective André-Oort theorem for these curves. We also prove that there are at most finitely many Drinfeld singular moduli that are algebraic units, for every fixed $q\geq2$, and we give an effective bound on the discriminant of such singular moduli. We give in an appendix an inseparability criterion for values of some classical modular forms, generalising an argument used in the proof of our first result.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{F}_r$ be a finite field of characteristic $p>3$. For any power $q$ of $p$, consider the elliptic curve $E=E_{q,r}$ defined by $y^2=x^3 + t^q -t$ over $K=\mathbb{F}_r(t)$. We describe several arithmetic invariants of $E$ such as the rank of its Mordell--Weil group $E(K)$, the size of its Néron--Tate regulator $\text{Reg}(E)$, and the order of its Tate--Shafarevich group $III(E)$ (which we prove is finite). These invariants have radically different behaviors depending on the congruence class of $p$ modulo 6. For instance $III(E)$ either has trivial $p$-part or is a $p$-group. On the other hand, we show that the product $|III(E)|\text{Reg}(E)$ has size comparable to $r^{q/6}$ as $q\to\infty$, regardless of $p\pmod{6}$. Our approach relies on the BSD conjecture, an explicit expression for the $L$-function of $E$, and a geometric analysis of the Néron model of $E$.

Abstract:We consider the inverse Galois problem over function fields of positive characteristic [Formula: see text], for example, over the projective line. We describe a method to construct certain Galois covers of the projective line and other curves, which are ordinary in the sense that their Jacobian has maximal [Formula: see text]-torsion. We do this by constructing Galois covers of ordinary semi-stable curves, and then deforming them into smooth Galois covers.

Abstract:We extend our method to compute division polynomials of Jacobians of curves over Q to curves over Q(t), in view of computing mod ell Galois representations occurring in the étale cohomology of surfaces over Q. Although the division polynomials which we obtain are unfortunately too complicated to achieve this last goal, we still obtain explicit families of Galois representations over P^1_Q, and we study their degeneration at places of bad reduction of the corresponding curve.

Abstract:We prove the first cases of a conjecture by Darmon--Rotger on the non-vanishing of generalized Kato classes attached to elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbf{Q}$ of rank $2$. Our method also shows that the non-vanishing of generalized Kato classes implies that the $p$-adic Selmer group of $E$ is $2$-dimensional. The main novelty in the proof is a formula for the leading term at the trivial character of an anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function attached to $E$ in terms of the derived $p$-adic height of generalized Kato classes and an enhanced $p$-adic regulator.

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. Greenberg has posed a question whether the structure of the fine Selmer group over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $\mathbb{Q}$ can be described by cyclotomic polynomials in a certain precise manner. A recent work of Lei has made progress on this problem by proving that the fine Mordell-Weil group (in the sense of Wuthrich) does have this required property. The goal of this paper is study the analogous question of Greenberg over various $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of an imaginary quadratic field $F$. In particular, when the elliptic curve has complex multiplication by the ring of integers of the imaginary quadratic field, we obtain analogous results of Lei over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension and anti-cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$. In the event that the elliptic curve has good ordinary reduction at the prime $p$, we further obtain a result over the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$ unramified outside precisely one of the prime of $F$ above $p$. Finally, we study the situation of an elliptic curve over the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension under the generalized Heegner hypothesis. Along the way, we establish an analogous result for the BDP-Selmer group. This latter result is then applied to obtain a relation between the BDP $p$-adic $L$-function and the Mordell-Weil rank growth in the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:We discuss, in a non-archimedean setting, the distribution of the coefficients of L-polynomials of curves of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. This allows us to prove, among other things, that the $\mathbb{Q}$-vector space spanned by such characteristic polynomials has dimension $g+1$.
