Abstract:We present an argument (for a cross disciplinary audience) to explain the Dunbar scaling hierarchy for social groups. Our analysis is based on the Promise Theory of trust, and basic dimensional analysis. We derive a universal scaling relation, and pinpoint how groups form from the seeding of individuals by relative alignment, which continues until the costs associated with group contention outweigh the benefits in a detailed balance scenario. We identify an `energy' parameter for this balance that has the semantics of trust in a social setting. Subject to partial efficiency of maintaining aligned intentions, we can calculate a series of compatible rates that balance growth with entropy.

Abstract:Dunbar’s number is the cognitive limit of human beings to maintain stable relationships with other individuals in their social networks, and it is found to be 150. It is based on the neocortex size of humans. Usually, Dunbar’s number and related phenomena are studied from the perspective of an individual. Dunbar’s number also plays a crucial role in evolutionary psychology and allied areas. However, no study done so far has considered a couple who are in a stable relationship as a system from the perspective of Dunbar’s number and its hierarchy layers. In this paper, we study the impact of Dunbar’s number and Dunbar’s hierarchy from the perspective of a couple by studying mathematically the conjoint Dunbar graphs for a couple. The cost of romance is the loss of almost two people from one’s support network when a human being enters into a new relationship. Thus, we obtain mathematically that there is no significant change in one’s friendship if human beings spend negligible time with their partners. Also, along with marriage and friendship development, we attempt to assess how a person’s social network structure holds up over the course of a romantic relationship. The stability of personal social networks is discussed through soft set theory and balance theoretic approach.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyse the sustainability of social networks using STrust, our social trust model. The novelty of the model is that it introduces the concept of engagement trust and combines it with the popularity trust to derive the social trust of the community as well as of individual members in the community. This enables the recommender system to use these different types of trust to recommend different things to the community, and identify (and recommend) different roles. For example, it recommends mentors using the engagement trust and leaders using the popularity trust. We then show the utility of the model by analysing data from two types of social networks. We also study the sustainability of a community through our social trust model. We observe that a 5% drop in highly trusted members causes more than a 50% drop in social capital that, in turn, raises the question of sustainability of the community. We report our analysis and its results.

Abstract:Trust is an essential necessity in Online Social Networks (OSNs) because of their current pervasive usage in sharing information on the Web. The traditional methods of measuring trust in social networks using heuristics or by manual methods are computationally expensive and sometimes do not offer reliable and scalable results. Recently, researchers resort to the use OSNs properties to model real life events because the interrelationships on these sites encode some human behaviors that resemble their off-line ones. Trust on these sites can, therefore, be measured by taking into consideration the social relationship and ties embeddedness within the underlying user graph. To this end, we study the distribution nature of "common friends", the network mixing, average clustering coefficient and scale-free behaviors of 4 OSNs. The study shows that the distribution of "common friends" on OSNs follows a power law. Furthermore, to measure trust using these metrics, we proposed mathematical frameworks and analysis to support our claim. The findings show that these metrics have the ability to measure the level of trust on an unknown user on a social network of trust. These results will further help redefine and develop more reliable, fast and trust inference algorithms and recommender systems for online products and auction sales, email spam detection algorithms, etc. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to study the statistical distribution of "common friends" on OSNs and demonstrated how they can be exploited for trust inference.
Validation of Dunbar's number in Twitter conversations

Abstract:Modern society's increasing dependency on online tools for both work and recreation opens up unique opportunities for the study of social interactions. A large survey of online exchanges or conversations on Twitter, collected across six months involving 1.7 million individuals is presented here. We test the theoretical cognitive limit on the number of stable social relationships known as Dunbar's number. We find that users can entertain a maximum of 100-200 stable relationships in support for Dunbar's prediction. The "economy of attention" is limited in the online world by cognitive and biological constraints as predicted by Dunbar's theory. Inspired by this empirical evidence we propose a simple dynamical mechanism, based on finite priority queuing and time resources, that reproduces the observed social behavior.

Abstract:In a previous FAST paper, I presented a quantitative model of the process of trust building, and showed that trust is accumulated like wealth: the rich get richer. This explained the pervasive phenomenon of adverse selection of trust certificates, as well as the fragility of trust networks in general. But a simple explanation does not always suggest a simple solution. It turns out that it is impossible to alter the fragile distribution of trust without sacrificing some of its fundamental functions. A solution for the vulnerability of trust must thus be sought elsewhere, without tampering with its distribution. This observation was the starting point of the present paper. It explores a different method for securing trust: not by redistributing it, but by mining for its sources. The method used to break privacy is thus also used to secure trust. A high level view of the mining methods that connect the two is provided in terms of *similarity networks*, and *spectral decomposition* of similarity preserving maps. This view may be of independent interest, as it uncovers a common conceptual and structural foundation of mathematical classification theory on one hand, and of the spectral methods of graph clustering and data mining on the other hand.

Limited-Trust in Social Network Games

Abstract:We consider agents in a social network competing to be selected as partners in collaborative, mutually beneficial activities. We study this through a model in which an agent i can initiate a limited number k_i>0 of games and selects the ideal partners from its one-hop neighborhood. On the flip side it can accept as many games offered from its neighbors. Each game signifies a productive joint economic activity, and players attempt to maximize their individual utilities. Unsurprisingly, more trustworthy agents are more desirable as partners. Trustworthiness is measured by the game theoretic concept of Limited-Trust, which quantifies the maximum cost an agent is willing to incur in order to improve the net utility of all agents. Agents learn about their neighbors' trustworthiness through interactions and their behaviors evolve in response. Empirical trials performed on realistic social networks show that when given the option, many agents become highly trustworthy; most or all become highly trustworthy when knowledge of their neighbors' trustworthiness is based on past interactions rather than known a priori. This trustworthiness is not the result of altruism, instead agents are intrinsically motivated to become trustworthy partners by competition. Two insights are presented: first, trustworthy behavior drives an increase in the utility of all agents, where maintaining a relatively modest level of trustworthiness may easily improve net utility by as much as 14.5%. If only one agent exhibits modest trust among self-centered ones, it can increase its average utility by up to 25% in certain cases! Second, and counter-intuitively, when partnership opportunities are abundant agents become less trustworthy.

Abstract:Non-centralized recommendation-based decision making is a central feature of several social and technological processes, such as market dynamics, peer-to-peer file-sharing and the web of trust of digital certification. We investigate the properties of trust propagation on networks, based on a simple metric of trust transitivity. We investigate analytically the percolation properties of trust transitivity in random networks with arbitrary degree distribution, and compare with numerical realizations. We find that the existence of a non-zero fraction of absolute trust (i.e. entirely confident trust) is a requirement for the viability of global trust propagation in large systems: The average pair-wise trust is marked by a discontinuous transition at a specific fraction of absolute trust, below which it vanishes. Furthermore, we perform an extensive analysis of the Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) web of trust, in view of the concepts introduced. We compare different scenarios of trust distribution: community- and authority-centered. We find that these scenarios lead to sharply different patterns of trust propagation, due to the segregation of authority hubs and densely-connected communities. While the authority-centered scenario is more efficient, and leads to higher average trust values, it favours weakly-connected "fringe" nodes, which are directly trusted by authorities. The community-centered scheme, on the other hand, favours nodes with intermediate degrees, in detriment of the authorities and its "fringe" peers.

THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL CAPITAL ON REALIZING A TRUST-BASED SOCIAL NETWORK Research-in-Progress

Abstract:How to build up trust has been a central topic of research in social networks. In this paper, we base on social capital theory to investigate what factors can influence an individual’s trust network in an online community. Specifically, we propose that three dimensions of social capital (1) opportunity, (2) motivation, and (3) ability have impacts on a user’s trust network formation in an online community. With the data from an online word-of-mouth community, we estimate a negative binomial regression model to test our hypotheses. As a result, all the hypotheses are supported. Future research directions are also discussed.

Abstract:Summary Social network (OSN) is an emerging platform through which people can connect with their friends, relatives, and other like‐minded people. On the other hand, users' personal information might be misused because of other users' biased and malicious behavior. Establishing a trusted environment in social networks is one of the current research problems. Some of the research papers proposed to trust computational methods, but still, there is a lack of methods to handle biased recommendations and loss of trust accuracy towards the target user. In this article, to address these open issues, "a novel trust recommendation model in online social networks using soft computing methods (TRMSC)" is proposed for the Twitter social networks. Here direct and indirect trust is computed for known and unknown users, respectively. The direct trust of a user is computed using clustering methods based on his social activities (posts, retweets received, mentions received, listed count, and follower count) with other users. In the computation of indirect trust, the impact of biased recommendations is suppressed using the Dempster Shafer theory(DST) method, and loss of trust is minimized using trust transitive matrices. The performance of the proposed method is analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Time and space complexities are measured using asymptotic notations. In experimental results, TRMSC is evaluated for different network sizes and for target users at different distances (2 to 4‐hops), where it could perform better than existing methods.

Abstract:Trust is very essential to secure and high quality interactions on the Semantic Web. In this paper, we introduce a trust model, which incorporates pairwise trust ratings and reliable factors of acquaintances and constructs an edge-weighted graph to calculate trust values. We interpret trust in two dimensions to better deal with it. We apply the theory in social network field to calculate trust and simulate the trust relationships between humans. We also take advantage of formulas in probability and statistics to analyze the similarities between agents. The algorithm of the trust model aims to be simple, efficient and flexible.

Abstract:The emerging yet promising paradigm of the Social Internet of Things (SIoT) integrates the notion of the Internet of Things with human social networks. In SIoT, objects, i.e., things, have the capability to socialize with the other objects in the SIoT network and can establish their social network autonomously by modeling human behaviour. The notion of trust is imperative in realizing these characteristics of socialization in order to assess the reliability of autonomous collaboration. The perception of trust is evolving in the era of SIoT as an extension to traditional security triads in an attempt to offer secure and reliable services, and is considered as an imperative aspect of any SIoT system for minimizing the probable risk of autonomous decision-making. This research investigates the idea of trust quantification by employing trust measurement in terms of direct trust, indirect trust as a recommendation, and the degree of SIoT relationships in terms of social similarities (community-of-interest, friendship, and co-work relationships). A weighted sum approach is subsequently employed to synthesize all the trust features in order to ascertain a single trust score. The experimental evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed model in segregating trustworthy and untrustworthy objects and via identifying the dynamic behaviour (i.e., trust-related attacks) of the SIoT objects.

A Trust and Distrust Mechanism for a Social Network-Based Recommendation System.

Abstract:As people and their acquaintances are connected with one another to form a social network, social network-based recommendation systems (SNRS) enable people to make decisions based on previous experiences and knowledge of acquaintances. SNRS are implemented to take advantage of the acquaintance relationships, which form the essential links within social networks, to enable people in need of item purchasing recommendations to send requests for recommendations and receive recommendations from people throughout the network. Each person in the social network maintains a pair of trust and distrust ratings for each of their acquaintances and updates the ratings based on usefulness of received from the corresponding acquaintance. A pair of trust and distrust rating is used instead of just a single trust rating where the assumed distrust rating can be derived from the trust rating. In the proposed trust and distrust mechanism, trust represents the perceived risk of choosing a recommendation from the corresponding acquaintance while distrust is a protective measure indicating the level of doubt on the level of trust that is assigned to the same acquaintance. The proposed mechanism corresponds to studies indicating that the trust and distrust are determined separately, with the level of trust being based on a relatively rational evaluation while the level of distrust is based more on fear and other irrational emotions. When the level of distrust rises over a certain threshold for an acquaintance, recommendations received from the acquaintance will not be considered during the decision making process until the level of distrust falls below the threshold. The simulation used for this study utilizes software agents that are connected with one another via a social network to model the behavior of people when soliciting recommendations and providing recommendations.
When Do People Trust Their Social Groups?

Abstract:Trust facilitates cooperation and supports positive outcomes in social groups, including member satisfaction, information sharing, and task performance. Extensive prior research has examined individuals' general propensity to trust, as well as the factors that contribute to their trust in specific groups. Here, we build on past work to present a comprehensive framework for predicting trust in groups. By surveying 6,383 Facebook Groups users about their trust attitudes and examining aggregated behavioral and demographic data for these individuals, we show that (1) an individual's propensity to trust is associated with how they trust their groups, (2) smaller, closed, older, more exclusive, or more homogeneous groups are trusted more, and (3) a group's overall friendship-network structure and an individual's position within that structure can also predict trust. Last, we demonstrate how group trust predicts outcomes at both individual and group level such as the formation of new friendship ties.

Abstract:Trust has been explored by many researchers in the past as a successful solution for assisting recommender systems. Even though the approach of using a web-of-trust scheme for assisting the recommendation production is well adopted, issues like the sparsity problem have not been explored adequately so far with regard to this. In this work we are proposing and testing a scheme that uses the existing ratings of users to calculate the hypothetical trust that might exist between them. The purpose is to demonstrate how some basic social networking when applied to an existing system can help in alleviating problems of traditional recommender system schemes. Interestingly, such schemes are also alleviating the cold start problem from which mainly new users are suffering. In order to show how good the system is in that respect, we measure the performance at various times as the system evolves and we also contrast the solution with existing approaches. Finally, we present the results which justify that such schemes undoubtedly work better than a system that makes no use of trust at all.

Abstract:We propose a novel trust metric for social networks which is suitable for application in recommender systems. It is personalised and dynamic and allows to compute the indirect trust between two agents which are not neighbours based on the direct trust between agents that are neighbours. In analogy to some personalised versions of PageRank, this metric makes use of the concept of feedback centrality and overcomes some of the limitations of other trust <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://metrics.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> particular, it does not neglect cycles and other patterns characterising social networks, as some other algorithms do. In order to apply the metric to recommender systems, we propose a way to make trust dynamic over time. We show by means of analytical approximations and computer simulations that the metric has the desired properties. Finally, we carry out an empirical validation on a dataset crawled from an Internet community and compare the performance of a recommender system using our metric to one using collaborative filtering.

Abstract:Dunbar hypothesized that $150$ is the maximal number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships. We explain this effect as being a consequence of a process of self-organization between $N$ units leading their social system to the edge of phase transition, usually termed criticality. Criticality generates events, with an inter-event time interval distribution characterized by an inverse power law (IPL) index $\mu_{S}<2$. These events break ergodicity and we refer to them as crucial events. The group makes decisions and the time persistence of each decision is given by another IPL distribution with IPL index $\mu_{R}$, which is different from $\mu_{S}$ if $N\neq 150$. We prove that when the number of interacting individuals is equal to $150$, these two different IPL indexes become identical, with the effect of generating the Kardar Parisi Zhang (KPZ) scaling $\delta =1/3$. We argue this to be an enhanced form of intelligence, which generates efficient information transmission within the group. We prove the inflrmation transmission efficiency is maximal when $N=150$, the Dunbar number.

Abstract:In social systems subject to indirect reciprocity, a positive reputation is key for increasing one's likelihood of future positive interactions. The flow of gossip can amplify the impact of a person's actions on their reputation depending on how widely it spreads across the social network, which leads to a percolation problem. To quantify this notion, we calculate the expected number of individuals, the "audience", who find out about a particular interaction. For a potential donor, a larger audience constitutes higher reputational stakes, and thus a higher incentive, to perform "good" actions in line with current social norms. For a receiver, a larger audience therefore increases the trust that the partner will be cooperative. This idea can be used for an algorithm that generates social networks, which we call trust based attachment (TBA). TBA produces graphs that share crucial quantitative properties with real-world networks, such as high clustering, small-world behavior, and power law degree distributions. We also show that TBA can be approximated by simple friend-of-friend routines based on triadic closure, which are known to be highly effective at generating realistic social network structures. Therefore, our work provides a new justification for triadic closure in social contexts based on notions of trust, gossip, and social information spread. These factors are thus identified as potential significant influences on how humans form social ties.

Abstract:Trust and trustworthiness form the basis for continued social and economic interactions, and they are also fundamental for cooperation, fairness, honesty, and indeed for many other forms of prosocial and moral behavior. However, trust entails risks, and building a trustworthy reputation requires effort. So how did trust and trustworthiness evolve, and under which conditions do they thrive? To find answers, we operationalize trust and trustworthiness using the trust game with the trustor's investment and the trustee's return of the investment as the two key parameters. We study this game on different networks, including the complete network, random and scale-free networks, and in the well-mixed limit. We show that in all but one case the network structure has little effect on the evolution of trust and trustworthiness. Specifically, for well-mixed populations, lattices, random and scale-free networks, we find that trust never evolves, while trustworthiness evolves with some probability depending on the game parameters and the updating dynamics. Only for the scale-free network with degree non-normalized dynamics, we find parameter values for which trust evolves but trustworthiness does not, as well as values for which both trust and trustworthiness evolve. We conclude with a discussion about mechanisms that could lead to the evolution of trust and outline directions for future work.
