Abstract:Computational models of peer interaction, with or without networks, have been applied to opinion dynamics to describe social phenomena. Here, we use the Deffuant–Weisbuch (DW) model of opinion dynamics, where a confidence parameter bounds individuals' interactions, both in paradigmatic artificial networks and some social networks. The interaction of an individual with their immediate neighbors is incorporated into the model using Asch's concept of social conformity. In general, conformity facilitates consensus in networks by reducing the time required to reach a state of equilibrium and by increasing the likelihood of a single opinion value prevailing throughout the network. In real networks, a higher probability of adherence ( ) to the majority opinion increases the proportion of individuals in consensus within less tolerant networks ( ). Conformity leads to more nodes agreeing around the same average opinion in a shorter time.

Dynamics of Opinions with Bounded Confidence in Social Cliques: Emergence of Fluctuations

Abstract: In this paper, we study the evolution of opinions over social networks with bounded confidence in social cliques. Node initial opinions are independently and identically distributed; at each time step, nodes review the average opinions of a randomly selected local clique. The clique averages may represent local group pressures on peers. Then nodes update their opinions under bounded confidence: only when the difference between an agent individual opinion and the corresponding local clique pressure is below a threshold, this agent opinion is updated according to the DeGroot rule as a weighted average of the two values. As a result, this opinion dynamics is a generalization of the classical Deffuant-Weisbuch model in which only pairwise interactions take place. First of all, we prove conditions under which all node opinions converge to finite limits. We show that in the limits the event that all nodes achieve a consensus, and the event that all nodes achieve pairwise distinct limits, i.e., social disagreements, are both nontrivial events. Next, we show that opinion fluctuations may take place in the sense that at least one agent in the network fails to hold a converging opinion trajectory. In fact, we prove that this fluctuation event happens with a strictly positive probability, and also constructively present an initial value event under which the fluctuation event arises with probability one. These results add to the understanding of the role of bounded confidence in social opinion dynamics, and the possibility of fluctuation reveals that bringing in cliques in Deffuant-Weisbuch models have fundamentally changed the behavior of such opinion dynamical processes.
An Adaptive Bounded-Confidence Model of Opinion Dynamics on Networks

Abstract:Individuals who interact with each other in social networks often exchange ideas and influence each other's opinions. A popular approach to studying the dynamics of opinion spread on networks is by examining bounded-confidence (BC) models, in which the nodes of a network have continuous-valued states that encode their opinions and are receptive to other opinions if they lie within some confidence bound of their own opinion. We extend the Deffuant--Weisbuch (DW) model, which is a well-known BC model, by studying opinion dynamics that coevolve with network structure. We propose an adaptive variant of the DW model in which the nodes of a network can (1) alter their opinion when they interact with a neighboring node and (2) break a connection with a neighbor based on an opinion tolerance threshold and then form a new connection to a node following the principle of homophily. This opinion tolerance threshold acts as a threshold to determine if the opinions of adjacent nodes are sufficiently different to be viewed as discordant. We find that our adaptive BC model requires a larger confidence bound than the standard DW model for the nodes of a network to achieve a consensus. Interestingly, our model includes regions with `pseudo-consensus' steady states, in which there exist two subclusters within an opinion-consensus group that deviate from each other by a small amount. We conduct extensive numerical simulations of our adaptive BC model and examine the importance of early-time dynamics and nodes with initial moderate opinions for achieving consensus. We also examine the effects of coevolution on the convergence time of the dynamics.

Abstract:Pairwise interactions computational models with or without networks have been applied to opinion dynamics to describe social phenomena. Here we use the Deffuant-Weisbuch model of opinion dynamics, where a confidence parameter bounds individuals' interactions, both in paradigmatic and complex networks. An individual's interaction with its immediate neighbors is added to the model using the social conformity concept as proposed by Asch. Consensus in networks with conformity is facilitated. A steady state of just one opinion group is reached for a shorter time, and smaller values of the confidence parameter in the different networks studied.

Abstract:We investigate opinion dynamics as a stochastic process in social networks. We introduce the stubborn agent in order to determine the impact of network structure on the emergence of consensus. Depending on the fraction of undirected long-range connections, we observe fascinatingly rich dynamical behavior and transitions from disordered to ordered states. In general, we find that the stubborn agent promotes the emergence of consensus due to the so-called "group effect" that facilitates coalescence between separated network components. Agents are also behaviorally constrained Shannon information entropy in networks. However, since agents want to evolve their opinion with Brownian motion, which may in turn impede full consensus, sufficiently frequent long-range links are in such situations crucial for the network to converge into an absorbing phase. Our experimental findings indicate that, for a large range of control parameters, our model yields stable and fluctuating polarized states.
When group level is different from the population level: an adaptive network with the Deffuant model

Abstract:We propose a model coupling the classical opinion dynamics of the bounded confidence model, proposed by Deffuant et al., with an adaptive network forming a community or group structure. At each step, an individual can decide if it changes groups or interact on its opinion with one of its internal or external neighbour. If it decides to look at the group level, it changes groups if its opinion is far from the average of its group from more than a threshold. If it is the case, it joins the group which has proportionally the closest average opinion from its. If it decides to interact with one of its neighbour, it becomes closer in opinion to it when its opinion and the one of the selected-to-interact neighbour are less distant from the threshold. From the study of this coupled model, we discover some surprising behaviours compared to the known behaviour of the Deffuant bounded confidence model(BC): The coupled model exhibits a total consensus for an threshold value lower than the BC model; the distribution of sizes of the groups changes: some groups become larger while other decrease in size, sometimes until containing only one individual; from the point of view of the groups, the consensus remains for a large set of threshold values while, looking at the population level, there are a lot of opinion clusters.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a social network uncertain opinion formation model in the framework of bounded confidence to investigate the process of forming collective opinions in a group of interaction agents under uncertain and social networks context. By taking different uncertain opinions and different uncertainty tolerances into account, the simulations analysis conducted on data describing users' relationships in social media platforms in opinion formation from two aspects: different social networks connection probability and the numbers of agents. Based on simulation analysis, we provide the explanations of the observations obtained.

Abstract:The Deffuant model is a spatial stochastic model for the dynamics of opinions in which individuals are located on a connected graph representing a social network and characterized by a number in the unit interval representing their opinion. The system evolves according to the following averaging procedure: pairs of neighbors interact independently at rate one if and only if the distance between their opinions does not exceed a certain confidence threshold, with each interaction resulting in the neighbors' opinions getting closer to each other. All the mathematical results collected so far about this model assume that the individuals are located on the integers. In contrast, we study the more realistic case where the social network can be any finite connected graph. In addition, we extend the opinion space to any bounded convex subset of a normed vector space where the norm is used to measure the level of disagreement or distance between the opinions. Our main result gives a lower bound for the probability of consensus. Interestingly, our proof leads to a universal lower bound that depends on the confidence threshold, the opinion space~(convex subset and norm) and the initial distribution, but not on the size or the topology of the social network.

Bounded-Confidence Models of Opinion Dynamics with Neighborhood Effects

Abstract:As people's opinions change, their social networks typically coevolve with them. People are often more susceptible to influence by people with similar opinions than by people with dissimilar opinions. In a bounded-confidence model (BCM) of opinion dynamics, interacting individuals influence each other through dyadic influence if and only if their opinions are sufficiently similar to each other. We introduce `neighborhood BCMs' (NBCMs) that include both the usual dyadic influence and a transitive influence, which models the effect of friends of a friend when determining whether or not an interaction with a friend influences an individual. In this transitive influence, an individual's opinion is influenced by a neighbor when, on average, the opinions of the neighbor's neighbors are sufficiently similar to their own opinion. We formulate neighborhood Deffuant--Weisbuch (NDW) and neighborhood Hegselmann--Krause (NHK) BCMs. We simulate our NDW model on time-independent networks and observe interesting opinion states that cannot occur in an associated baseline DW model. We also simulate our NDW model on adaptive networks that coevolve with opinions by changing its structure through `transitive homophily'. An individual that breaks a tie to one of its neighbors and then rewires that tie to a new individual, with a preference for individuals with a mean neighbor opinion that is closer to that individual's opinion. We explore how the qualitative opinion dynamics and network properties of our time-independent and adaptive NDWM models change as we adjust the relative proportions of dyadic and transitive influence. Finally, we study a two-layer opinion--disease model in which we couple our NDW model with disease spread through a shared adaptive network that can change both on the opinion layer and on the disease layer and we examine how the opinion dynamics affect disease spread.

Dynamics of bounded confidence opinion in heterogeneous social networks: concord against partial antagonism

Abstract:Bounded confidence models of opinion dynamics have been actively studied in recent years, in particular, opinion formation and extremism propagation along with other aspects of social dynamics. In this work, after an analysis of limitations of the Deffuant-Weisbuch (DW) bounded confidence, relative agreement model, we propose the Mixed model that takes into account two psychological types of individuals. Concord agents (C-agents) are friendly people; they interact in a way that their opinions get closer always. Agents of the other psychological type show partial antagonism in their interaction (PA-agents). Opinion dynamics in heterogeneous social groups, consisting of agents of the two types, was studied on different social networks. Limit cases of the mixed model, pure C- and PA-societies, were also studied. We found that group opinion formation is, qualitatively, almost independent of the topology of networks used in this work. Opinion fragmentation, polarization and consensus are observed in the mixed model at different proportions of PA- and C-agents, depending on the value of initial opinion tolerance of agents. As for the opinion formation and arising of "dissidents", the opinion dynamics of the C-agents society was found to be similar to that of the DW model, except for the rate of opinion convergence. Nevertheless, mixed societies showed dynamics and bifurcation patterns notably different to those of the DW model. The influence of biased initial conditions over opinion formation in heterogeneous social groups was also studied versus the initial value of opinion uncertainty, varying the proportion of the PA- to C-agents. Bifurcation diagrams showed impressive evolution of collective opinion, in particular, radical change of left to right consensus or vice versa at an opinion uncertainty value equal to 0.7 in the model with the PA/C mixture of population near 50/50.

Discrete Opinion Dynamics on Networks Based on Social Influence

Abstract:A model of opinion dynamics based on social influence on networks was studied. The opinion of each agent can have integer values i = 1, 2, ..., I and opinion exchanges are restricted to connected agents. It was found that for any I >= 2 and self-confidence parameter 0 <= u < 1, when u is a degree-independent constant, the weighted proportion < q(i)> of the population that hold a given opinion i is a martingale, and the fraction q(i) of opinion i will gradually converge to < q(i)>. The tendency can slow down with the increase of degree assortativity of networks. When u is degree dependent, < q(i)> does not possess the martingale property, however q(i) still converges to it. In both cases for a finite network the states of all agents will finally reach consensus. Further if there exist stubborn persons in the population whose opinions do not change over time, it was found that for degree-independent constant u, both q(i) and < q(i)> will converge to fixed proportions which only depend on the distribution of initial obstinate persons, and naturally the final equilibrium state will be the coexistence of diverse opinions held by the stubborn people. The analytical results were verified by numerical simulations on Barabasi-Albert (BA) networks. The model highlights the influence of high-degree agents on the final consensus or coexistence state and captures some realistic features of the diffusion of opinions in social networks.
Uncertain Opinion Evolution with Bounded Confidence Effects in Social Networks

Abstract:When people express their opinions for an issue, they can express both exact opinions and uncertain opinions, such as numerical interval opinions. Moreover, social network is a crucial medium of opinion interaction and evolution. In this paper, uncertain opinion evolution with bounded confidence effects in social networks is investigated by theoretical demonstration and numerical examples analyses, and experiments simulations analyses. Theoretical results show when all the agents are with uncertainty tolerances, then the ratios of agents expressing uncertain opinions are impossible to decrease, even increase, as time increases; while when all the agents are without uncertainty tolerances, then the ratios of agents expressing uncertain opinions are impossible to increase, even decrease, as time increases. Moreover, the average widths of uncertain opinions are always smaller than the maximum opinion width of all the initial opinions among agents. Experiments simulations results show different ratios of agents with uncertainty tolerances and different ratios of agents expressing uncertain opinions have strong impact on the ratios of the agents expressing the uncertain opinions in the stable state, and the average widths of uncertain opinions in the stable state.

Abstract:In this work we study the coupled dynamics of social balance and opinion formation. We propose a model where agents form opinions under bounded confidence, but only considering the opinions of their friends. The signs of social ties -friendships and enmities- evolve seeking for social balance, taking into account how similar agents' opinions are. We consider both the case where opinions have one and two dimensions. We find that our dynamics produces the segregation of agents into two cliques, with the opinions of agents in one clique differing from those in the other. Depending on the level of bounded confidence, the dynamics can produce either consensus of opinions within each clique or the coexistence of several opinion clusters in a clique. For the uni-dimensional case, the opinions in one clique are all below the opinions in the other clique, hence defining a "left clique" and a "right clique". In the two-dimensional case, our numerical results suggest that the two cliques are separated by a hyperplane in the opinion space. We also show that the phenomenon of unidimensional opinions identified by DeMarzo, Vayanos and Zwiebel (Q J Econ 2003) extends partially to our dynamics. Finally, in the context of politics, we comment about the possible relation of our results to the fragmentation of an ideology and the emergence of new political parties.

Bounded-Confidence Models of Opinion Dynamics with Adaptive Confidence Bounds

Abstract:People's opinions change with time as they interact with each other. In a bounded-confidence model (BCM) of opinion dynamics, individuals (which are represented by the nodes of a network) have continuous-valued opinions and are influenced by neighboring nodes whose opinions are sufficiently similar to theirs (i.e., are within a confidence bound). In this paper, we formulate and analyze discrete-time BCMs with heterogeneous and adaptive confidence bounds. We introduce two new models: (1) a BCM with synchronous opinion updates that generalizes the Hegselmann--Krause (HK) model and (2) a BCM with asynchronous opinion updates that generalizes the Deffuant--Weisbuch (DW) model. We analytically and numerically explore our adaptive BCMs' limiting behaviors, including the confidence-bound dynamics, the formation of clusters of nodes with similar opinions, and the time evolution of an "effective graph", which is a time-dependent subgraph of a network with edges between nodes that {are currently receptive to each other.} For a variety of networks and a wide range of values of the parameters that control the increase and decrease of confidence bounds, we demonstrate numerically that our adaptive BCMs result in fewer major opinion clusters and longer convergence times than the baseline (i.e., nonadaptive) BCMs. We also show that our adaptive BCMs can have adjacent nodes that converge to the same opinion but are not {receptive to each other.} This qualitative behavior does not occur in the associated baseline BCMs.

Abstract:Inspired by the continuous opinion and discrete action (CODA) model, bounded confidence and social networks, the bounded confidence evolution of opinions and actions in social networks is investigated and a social network opinions and actions evolutions (SNOAEs) model is proposed. In the SNOAE model, it is assumed that each agent has a CODA for a certain issue. Agents’ opinions are private and invisible, that is, an individual agent only knows its own opinion and cannot obtain other agents’ opinions unless there is a social network connection edge that allows their communication; agents’ actions are public and visible to all agents and impact other agents’ actions. Opinions and actions evolve in a directed social network. In the limitation of the bounded confidence, other agents’ actions or agents’ opinions noticed or obtained by network communication, respectively, are used by agents to update their opinions. Based on the SNOAE model, the evolution of the opinions and actions with bounded confidence is investigated in social networks both theoretically and experimentally with a detailed simulation analysis. Theoretical research results show that discrete actions can attract agents who trust the discrete action, and make agents to express extreme opinions. Simulation experiments results show that social network connection probability, bounded confidence, and the opinion threshold of action choice parameters have strong impacts on the evolution of opinions and actions. However, the number of agents in the social network has no obvious influence on the evolution of opinions and actions.
Multi-Level Opinion Dynamics under Bounded Confidence

Abstract:Opinion dynamics focuses on the opinion evolution in a social community. Recently, some models of continuous opinion dynamics under bounded confidence were proposed by Deffuant and Krause, et al. In the literature, agents were generally assumed to have a homogeneous confidence level. This paper proposes an extended model for a group of agents with heterogeneous confidence levels. First, a social differentiation theory is introduced and a social group is divided into opinion subgroups with distinct confidence levels. Second, a multi-level heterogeneous opinion formation model is formulated under the framework of bounded confidence. Finally, computer simulations are conducted to study the collective opinion evolution, focusing on three key factors: the fractions of heterogeneous agents, the initial opinions, and the group size. The simulation results demonstrate that the number of final opinions depends on the fraction of close-minded agents when the group size and the initial opinions are fixed; the final opinions converge more easily when the initial opinions are closer; and the number of final opinions can be approximately modeled by a linear increasing function of the group size and the increasing rate is the fraction of close-minded agents.
High-Effect Priority Bounded Confidence Model for Network Opinion Evolution

Abstract:Artificial social networks which include thousands of members have become an important platform for network opinion evolution.People will not try their best to get and consider all other people's opinions when they give their opinions in Internet,because they do not have enough time and energy to do this,and they don't think it is necessary.But in bounded confidence model,it needs to take into account all the other people's opinions when any people update his opinion,which is in conflict with the real networks.To solve this problem,a novelty network opinion evolution model with dual-choices based on effect and confidence was proposed,according to human behavioral patterns in real networks,and a model of people's opinion insistence strategy was made.The new model and the bounded confidence model with different sets of parameters were simulated for many times,and the results are in good agreement with what happened in real networks.
Opinion limits study for the multi-selection bounded confidence model

Abstract:In this work, we study the opinion limit states for a generalized bounded confidence agent-based opinion model. Agents can select multiple opinions in the network, and the confidence bound is considered on the distance between the average of the selected opinions and agent opinion itself. The number of selection agents for a certain agent, which is also called the selection number, means the agent opinion interaction degree. It is known that when the confidence bound is large sufficiently, opinions reach consensus almost surely. We mainly study the opinion consensus and the opinion polarization when the confidence bound is small sufficiently. Firstly, we provide and prove the upper and lower bounds for the opinion consensus probability of this bound confidence model. It shows that the opinion consensus probability almost always decreases as the confidence bound decreases. Secondly, the opinion consensus probability is larger than the one for the opinion evolution of the Deffuant-Weisbuch model. Finally, we demonstrate the ultimate probability distribution of one agent opinion and compare it with the gossip form and the general bounded confidence form, and demonstrate how the opinion polarization probabilities evolve as the selection number changes. Specially, different from other studies, we find that the opinion polarization would happen more easily if the opinion interaction degree is strengthened. In a sum, the multiple selection mechanism will increase the opinion consensus probability and the opinion polarization probability, respectively, comparing to the single selection mechanism.

Opinion formation in multiplex networks with general initial distributions

Abstract:We study opinion dynamics over multiplex networks where agents interact with bounded confidence. Namely, two neighbouring individuals exchange opinions and compromise if their opinions do not differ by more than a given threshold. In literature, agents are generally assumed to have a homogeneous confidence bound. Here, we study analytically and numerically opinion evolution over structured networks characterised by multiple layers with respective confidence thresholds and general initial opinion distributions. Through rigorous probability analysis, we show analytically the critical thresholds at which a phase transition takes place in the long-term consensus behaviour, over multiplex networks with some regularity conditions. Our results reveal the quantitative relation between the critical threshold and initial distribution. Further, our numerical simulations illustrate the consensus behaviour of the agents in network topologies including lattices and, small-world and scale-free networks, as well as for structure-dependent convergence parameters accommodating node heterogeneity. We find that the critical thresholds for consensus tend to agree with the predicted upper bounds in Theorems 4 and 5 in this paper. Finally, our results indicate that multiplexity hinders consensus formation when the initial opinion configuration is within a bounded range and, provide insight into information diffusion and social dynamics in multiplex systems modeled by networks.

Abstract:At the beginning of this century, Hegselmann and Krause proposed a dynamical model for opinion formation that is referred to as the Bounded Confidence Opinion Dynamics (BCOD) model and that has since attracted a wide interest from different research communities. The model can be viewed as a dynamic network, in which each agent is endowed with a state variable representing an opinion and two agents interact if the distance between their opinions does not exceed a constant confidence bound. This relation of instantaneous proximity between the opinions naturally induces a dynamic interaction graph. At each stage of the opinion iteration, all agents synchronously update their opinion to the average of all opinions that belong to the neighbors in the interaction graph. BCOD models exhibit a broad variety of phenomena that cannot be studied by traditional methods, and their analysis has enriched the systems and control field with a number of novel mathematical tools. This fact, together with the existence of an extensive literature on the topic scattered across different fields, calls for a systematic presentation of the existing results on this class of dynamic networks. The aim of this survey is to provide an overview of BCOD models with time-synchronous interactions, with possibly asymmetric and heterogeneous confidence bounds. Conditions on the different classes of BCOD which ensure the convergence (in finite time or asymptotically) of the opinions are discussed, and the possible structures of the terminal opinions are described. The numerous phenomena highlighted in the literature from numerical studies, e.g., the characterization of steady state behaviors and the sensitivity to confidence thresholds, are also reviewed. Finally, some recent modifications and applications of BCOD models are discussed, and suggestions of directions for future research are provided.
