Abstract:We give an explicit description of the twisted arrow construction for simplicial spaces and demonstrate individually that it preserves the defining properties of a complete Segal space. Moreover, we show that for a Segal space, the natural projection from the twisted arrow Segal space is a left fibration.

Abstract:We develop an analog of Dugger and Spivak's necklace formula providing an explicit description of the Segal space generated by an arbitrary simplicial space. We apply this to obtain a formula for the Segalification of $n$-fold simplicial spaces, a new proof of the invariance of right fibrations, and a new construction of the Boardman-Vogt tensor product of $\infty$-operads, for which we also derive an explicit formula.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a model structure for $(\infty,1)$-categories on the category of simplicial spaces, whose fibrant objects are the Segal spaces. In particular, we show that it is Quillen equivalent to the models of $(\infty,1)$-categories given by complete Segal spaces and Segal categories. We furthermore prove that this model structure has desirable properties: it is cartesian closed and left proper. As applications, we get a simple description of the inclusion of categories into $(\infty,1)$-categories and of homotopy limits of $(\infty,1)$-categories.

2-Segal maps associated to a category with cofibrations

Abstract:Waldhausen's $S_\bullet$-construction gives a way to define the algebraic $K$-theory space of a category with cofibrations. Specifically, the $K$-theory space of a category with cofibrations $\mathcal{C}$ can be defined as the loop space of the realization of the simplicial topological space $|iS_\bullet \mathcal{C} |$. Dyckerhoff and Kapranov observed that if $\mathcal{C}$ is chosen to be a proto-exact category, then this simplicial topological space is 2-Segal. A natural question is then what variants of this $S_\bullet$-construction give 2-Segal spaces. We find that for $|iS_\bullet \mathcal{C}|$, $S_\bullet\mathcal{C}$, $wS_\bullet\mathcal{C}$, and the simplicial set whose $n$th level is the set of isomorphism classes of $S_\bullet\mathcal{C}$, there are certain $2$-Segal maps which are always equivalences. However for all of these simplicial objects, none of the rest of the $2$-Segal maps have to be equivalences. We also reduce the question of whether $|wS_\bullet \mathcal{C}|$ is $2$-Segal in nice cases to the question of whether a simpler simplicial space is $2$-Segal. Additionally, we give a sufficient condition for $S_\bullet \mathcal{C}$ to be $2$-Segal. Along the way we introduce the notion of a generated category with cofibrations and provide an example where the levelwise realization of a simplicial category which is not $2$-Segal is $2$-Segal.

Abstract:This note is a contribution for a proceedings volume of the workshop "Higher Segal Spaces and their Applications to Algebraic K-Theory, Hall Algebras, and Combinatorics". The content is a streamlined exposition based on a talk about a result by Bergner-Osorno-Ozornova-Rovelli-Scheimbauer from WITII. We discuss how a generalized version of Waldhausen's S-construction describes a correspondence between 2-Segal spaces and certain double Segal spaces, which satisfy further conditions of stability and augmentation.

Abstract:The straightening–unstraightening correspondence of Grothendieck–Lurie provides an equivalence between cocartesian fibrations between -categories and diagrams of -categories. We provide an alternative proof of this correspondence, as well as an extension of straightening–unstraightening to all higher categorical dimensions. This is based on an explicit combinatorial result relating two types of fibrations between double categories, which can be applied inductively to construct the straightening of a cocartesian fibration between higher categories.

Abstract:In this survey article, we review some conceptual approaches to the cyclic category $\Lambda$, as well as its description as a crossed simplicial group. We then give a new proof of the model structure on cyclic sets, work through the details of the generalized Reedy structure on cyclic spaces, and introduce model structures for cyclic Segal spaces and cyclic 2-Segal spaces.

Abstract:It is shown that Segal's theorem on the spaces of rational maps from CP^1 to CP^n can be extended to the spaces of continuous rational maps from CP^m to CP^n for any m less than or equal to n. The tools are the Stone-Weierstrass Theorem and Vassiliev's machinery of simplicial resolutions.

ON THE SPHERICAL TWISTS ON 3-CALABI-YAU CATEGORIES FROM MARKED SURFACES

Abstract:We are interested in the 3-Calabi-Yau categories $\mathcal{D}$ arising from quivers with potential associated to a triangulated marked surface $\mathbf{S}$ (without punctures). We prove that the spherical twist group ST of $\mathcal{D}$, which is a subgroup of its auto-equivalence group generated by spherical twists, is isomorphic to a subgroup (generated by braid twists) of the mapping class group of the decorated marked surface $\mathbf{S}_{\bigtriangleup}$. Here $\mathbf{S}_{\bigtriangleup}$ is the surface obtained from $\mathbf{S}$ by decorating with a set of decorated points, where the number of points equals the number of triangles in any triangulations of $\mathbf{S}$. For instance, when $\mathbf{S}$ is an annulus, the result implies the faithfulness of the spherical twist group actions, in the sense that ST is isomorphic to the affine braid group of type $\widetilde{A}$. One application is that this faithfulness completes the description of the spaces of stability conditions on $\mathcal{D}$ in the case of affine type $\widetilde{A}$. Other applications include geometric realizations of Amiot's quotient for cluster categories and of simple-projective duality for Ginzburg dg algebras.

Abstract:Abstract A twisting system is one of the major tools to study graded algebras; however, it is often difficult to construct a (nonalgebraic) twisting system if a graded algebra is given by generators and relations. In this paper, we show that a twisted algebra of a geometric algebra is determined by a certain automorphism of its point variety. As an application, we classify twisted algebras of three-dimensional geometric Artin–Schelter regular algebras up to graded algebra isomorphism.

Abstract:A decomposition space (also called 2-Segal space) is a simplicial object satisfying an exactness condition weaker than the Segal condition: just as the Segal condition expresses composition, the new condition expresses decomposition. It is a general framework for incidence (co)algebras. In this contribution, after establishing a formula for the section coefficients, we survey a large supply of examples, emphasising the notion's firm roots in classical combinatorics. The first batch of examples, similar to binomial posets, serves to illustrate 2 key points: (1) the incidence algebra in question is realised directly from a decomposition space, without a reduction step, and reductions are often given by CULF functors; (2) at the objective level, the convolution algebra is a monoidal structure of species. We encounter the usual Cauchy product of species, the shuffle product of L-species, the Dirichlet product of arithmetic species, the Joyal-Street external product of q-species and the Morrison `Cauchy' product of q-species. In each case a power series representation results from taking cardinality. The external product of q-species exemplifies the fact that Waldhausen's S-construction on an abelian category is a decomposition space, yielding Hall algebras. The next class of examples includes Schmitt's chromatic Hopf algebra, the Faà di Bruno bialgebra, the Butcher-Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra of trees and variations from operad theory. Similar structures on posets and directed graphs exemplify a general construction of decomposition spaces from directed restriction species. An appetiser on decomposition spaces of symmetric functions is included. We finish by computing the Möbius function in a few cases, and commenting on certain cancellations that occur in the process of taking cardinality, substantiating that these cancellations are not possible at the objective level.

Simplicial presheaves of Green complexes and twisting cochains

Abstract:We construct three simplicial presheaves on the site of ringed spaces, and in particular on that of complex manifolds. The descent objects for these simplicial presheaves yield Toledo--Tong's twisting cochains, simplicial twisting cochains, and complexes that appear in Green's thesis on Chern classes for coherent analytic sheaves, respectively. We thus extend the aforementioned constructions to the equivariant setting, and more generally to stacks. This is the first step in achieving push-forwards in K-theory and Riemann--Roch theorems for appropriate stacks, as was achieved by Toledo and Tong for arbitrary complex manifolds, and further pursued by O'Brian and Green.

Excision for Spaces of Admissible Skeins

Abstract:The skein module for a d-dimensional manifold is a vector space spanned by embedded framed graphs decorated by a category A with suitable extra structure depending on the dimension d, modulo local relations which hold inside d-balls. For a full subcategory S of A, an S-admissible skein module is defined analogously, except that local relations for a given ball may only be applied if outside the ball at least one edge is coloured in S. In this paper we prove that admissible skein modules in any dimension satisfy excision, namely that the skein module of a glued manifold is expressed as a coend over boundary values on the boundary components glued together. We furthermore relate skein modules for different choices of S, apply our result to cylinder categories, and recover the relation to modified traces.

A Sheaf-Theoretic Construction of Shape Space

Abstract:We present a sheaf-theoretic construction of shape space -- the space of all shapes. We do this by describing a homotopy sheaf on the poset category of constructible sets, where each set is mapped to its Persistent Homology Transform (PHT). Recent results that build on fundamental work of Schapira have shown that this transform is injective, thus making the PHT a good summary object for each shape. Our homotopy sheaf result allows us to "glue" PHTs of different shapes together to build up the PHT of a larger shape. In the case where our shape is a polyhedron we prove a generalized nerve lemma for the PHT. Finally, by re-examining the sampling result of Smale-Niyogi-Weinberger, we show that we can reliably approximate the PHT of a manifold by a polyhedron up to arbitrary precision.

Abstract:We prove that Szczarba's twisting cochain is comultiplicative. In particular, the induced map from the cobar construction of the chains on a 1-reduced simplicial set X to the chains on the Kan loop group of X is a quasi-isomorphism of dg bialgebras. We also show that Szczarba's twisted shuffle map is a dgc map connecting a twisted Cartesian product with the associated twisted tensor product. This gives a natural dgc model for fibre bundles. We apply our results to finite covering spaces and to the Serre spectral sequence.
