Abstract:In this note, I give a method to construct rational Seifert surface for those smooth or piece-wise linear oriented knots in Lens space. I assume that the oriented knot has a regular projection on Heegaard torus and then construct rational Seifert surface on twist toroidal diagram.

Abstract:Suppose $K$ is a knot in a 3-manifold $Y$, and that $Y$ admits a pair of distinct contact structures. Assume that $K$ has Legendrian representatives in each of these contact structures, such that the corresponding Thurston-Bennequin framings are equivalent. This paper provides a method to prove that the contact structures resulting from Legendrian surgery along these two representatives remain distinct. Applying this method to the situation where the starting manifold is $-\Sigma(2,3,6m+1)$ and the knot is a singular fiber, together with convex surface theory we can classify the tight contact structures on certain families of Seifert fiber spaces.

Unknotted Curves on Seifert Surfaces

Abstract:We consider homologically essential simple closed curves on Seifert surfaces of genus one knots in $S^3$, and in particular those that are unknotted or slice in $S^3$. We completely characterize all such curves for most twist knots: they are either positive or negative braid closures; moreover, we determine exactly which of those are unknotted. A surprising consequence of our work is that the figure eight knot admits infinitely many unknotted essential curves up to isotopy on its genus one Seifert surface, and those curves are enumerated by Fibonacci numbers. On the other hand, we prove that many twist knots admit homologically essential curves that cannot be positive or negative braid closures. Indeed, among those curves, we exhibit an example of a slice but not unknotted homologically essential simple closed curve. We further investigate our study of unknotted essential curves for arbitrary Whitehead doubles of non-trivial knots, and obtain that there is a precisely one unknotted essential simple closed curve in the interior of the doubles' standard genus one Seifert surface. As a consequence of all these we obtain many new examples of 3-manifolds that bound contractible 4-manifolds.

A Seifert algorithm for integral homology spheres

Abstract:From classical knot theory we know that every knot in $S^3$ is the boundary of an oriented, embedded surface. A standard demonstration of this fact achieved by elementary technique comes from taking a regular projection of any knot and employing Seifert's constructive algorithm. In this note we give a natural generalization of Seifert's algorithm to any closed integral homology 3-sphere. The starting point of our algorithm is presenting the handle structure of a Heegaard splitting of a given integral homology sphere as a planar diagram on the boundary of a $3$-ball. (For a well known example of such a planar presentation, see the Poincaré homology sphere planar presentation in {\em Knots and Links} by D. Rolfsen \cite{Rolfsen}.) An oriented link can then be represented by the regular projection of an oriented $k$-strand tangle. From there we give a natural way to find a ``Seifert circle" and associated half-twisted bands.

Abstract:We introduce a 4-dimensional analogue of the rational Seifert genus of a knot $K\subset Y$, which we call the rational slice genus, that measures the complexity of a homology class in $H_2(Y\times [0,1],K;\mathbb{Q})$. Our main theorem is a lower bound for the rational slice genus of a knot in terms of its Heegaard Floer $\tau$ invariants. To prove this, we bound the $\tau$ invariants of any satellite link whose pattern is a closed braid in terms of the $\tau$ invariants of the companion knot, a result which should be of independent value. Our techniques also produce rational PL slice genus bounds. As applications, we use our bounds to prove that Floer simple knots have rational slice genus equal to their rational Seifert genus. We also show that there exist sequences of knots in a fixed 3-manifold whose PL slice genus is unbounded. In addition, we produce stronger bounds for the slice genus of knots relative to the rational longitude, and use these to produce a rational slice-Bennequin bound for knots in contact manifolds with non-trivial contact invariant.
Nodal rational curves on Enriques surfaces of base change type

Abstract:Using lattice theory, Hulek and Schütt proved that for every $m\in\mathbb{Z}_+$ there exists a nine-dimensional family $\mathcal{F}_m$ of K3 surfaces covering Enriques surfaces having an elliptic pencil with a rational bisection of arithmetic genus $m$. We present a purely geometrical lattice free construction of these surfaces, that allows us to prove that generically the mentioned bisections are nodal. Moreover, we show that, for every $m\in\mathbb{Z}_+$, the very general Enriques surface covered by a K3 surface in $\mathcal{F}_m$ admits a countable set of nodal rational curves of arithmetic genus $(4k^2-4k+1)m+4k^2-4k$ for every $k\in\mathbb{Z}_+$, that form a rank 8 subgroup of the automorphism group of the surface. As an application, we compute the linear class of the $n$-torsion multisection for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$ for a general rational elliptic surface.

Abstract:We show that lens space surgeries on knots in $S^3$ which arise from the primitive/Seifert type construction also arise from the primitive/primitive construction. This is the first step of a three step program to prove the Berge conjecture for tunnel number one knots.

Abstract:We point out that recent constructions of inequivalent smooth structures yield a manufacturing procedure of infinite sets of pairwise smoothly non-isotopic nullhomologous 2-tori and spheres inside a myriad of 4-manifolds. The corresponding infinite set consists of topologically isotopic surfaces that topologically bound a handlebody in several instances.

Abstract:Knot filtered embedded contact homology was first introduced by Hutchings in 2015; it has been computed for the standard transverse unknot in irrational ellipsoids by Hutchings and for the Hopf link in lens spaces L(n,n−1) via a quotient by Weiler. While toric constructions can be used to understand the ECH chain complexes of many contact forms adapted to open books with binding the unknot and Hopf link, they do not readily adapt to general torus knots and links. In this paper, we generalize the definition and invariance of knot filtered embedded contact homology to allow for degenerate knots with rational rotation numbers. We then develop new methods for understanding the embedded contact homology chain complex of positive torus knotted fibrations of the standard tight contact 3‐sphere in terms of their presentation as open books and as Seifert fiber spaces. We provide Morse–Bott methods, using a doubly filtered complex and the energy filtered perturbed Seiberg–Witten Floer theory developed by Hutchings and Taubes, and use them to compute the T(2,q) knot filtered embedded contact homology, for q odd and positive.

Abstract:Let T n be the real n-torus group. We introduce a new definition of lens spaces and give some sufficient conditions for diffeomorphic classification of lens spaces. We show that any 3-dimensional lens space L ( p ; q ) is T 2 -equivariantly cobordant to zero. We also give some sufficient conditions for higher dimensional lens spaces L ( p ; q 1 , … , q n ) to be T n + 1 -equivariantly cobordant to zero. General results in equivariant topology imply that torus equivariant complex bordism classes of lens spaces are trivial. In contrast, our proofs are constructive using toric topological arguments.

Abstract:Let $\Sigma$ be a compact orientable surface with nonempty boundary, let $\varphi: \Sigma \to \Sigma$ be an orientation-preserving pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism, and let $M = \Sigma \times I / \stackrel{\varphi}{\sim}$ be the mapping torus of $\Sigma$ over $\varphi$. Let $\mathcal{F}^{s}$ denote the stable foliation of $\varphi$ in $\Sigma$. Let $T_1, \ldots, T_k$ denote the boundary components of $M$. With respect to a canonical choice of meridian and longitude on each $T_i$, the degeneracy locus of the suspension flow of $\varphi$ on $T_i$ can be identified with a pair of integers $(p_i; q_i)$ such that $p_i > 0$ and $-\frac{1}{2}p_i < q_i \leqslant \frac{1}{2}p_i$. Let $c_i$ denote the number of components of $T_i \cap (\Sigma \times \{0\})$. Assume that $\mathcal{F}^{s}$ is co-orientable and $\varphi$ reverses the co-orientation on $\mathcal{F}^{s}$. We show that the Dehn filling of $M$ along $\partial M$ with any multislope in $J_1 \times \ldots \times J_k$ admits a co-orientable taut foliation, where $J_i$ is one of the two open intervals in $\mathbb{R} \cup \{\infty\} \cong \mathbb{R}P^{1}$ between $\frac{p_i}{q_i + c_i}, \frac{p_i}{q_i - c_i}$ which doesn't contain $\frac{p_i}{q_i}$. For some hyperbolic fibered knot manifolds, the slopes given above contain all slopes that yield non-L-space Dehn filllings. The examples include (1) the exterior of the $(-2,3,2q+1)$-pretzel knot in $S^{3}$ for each $q \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geqslant 3}$ (see \hyperref[Kri]{[Kri]} for a previous proof), (2) the exteriors of many L-space knots in lens spaces.

Abstract:We exhibit the first example of a knot in the three-sphere with a pair of minimal genus Seifert surfaces that can be distinguished using the sutured Floer homology of their complementary manifolds together with the Spin^c-grading. This answers a question of Juhász. More precisely, we show that the Euler characteristic of the sutured Floer homology of the complementary manifolds distinguishes between the two surfaces, as does the sutured Floer polytope introduced by Juhász. Actually, we exhibit an infinite family of knots with pairs of Seifert surfaces that can be distinguished by the Euler characteristic.

Abstract:We characterize when some small Seifert fibered spaces can be the convex boundary of a symplectic rational homology ball and give strong restrictions for others to bound such manifolds. As part of this, we show that the only spherical $3$-manifolds that are the boundary of a symplectic rational homology ball are the lens spaces $L(p^2,pq-1)$ found by Lisca and give evidence for the Gompf conjecture that Brieskorn spheres do not bound Stein domains in C^2. We also find restrictions on Lagrangian disk fillings of some Legendrian knots in small Seifert fibered spaces.

Abstract:We construct two infinite families of knots each of which admits a Seifert fibered surgery with none of these surgeries coming from Dean's primitive/Seifert-fibered construction. This disproves a conjecture that all Seifert fibered surgeries arise from Dean's primitive/Seifert-fibered construction. The (-3,3,5)-pretzel knot belongs to both of the infinite families.

Abstract:This article is concerned with locally flatly immersed surfaces in simply-connected $4$-manifolds where the complement of the surface has fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$. Once the genus and number of double points are fixed, we classify such immersed surfaces in terms of the equivariant intersection form of their exterior and a secondary invariant. Applications include criteria for deciding when an immersed $\mathbb{Z}$-surface in $S^4$ is isotopic to the standard immersed surface that is obtained from an unknotted surface by adding local double points. As another application, we enumerate $\mathbb{Z}$-disks in $D^4$ with a single double point and boundary a given knot; we prove that the number of such disks may be infinite. We also prove that a knot bounds a $\mathbb{Z}$-disk in $D^4$ with $c_+$ positive double points and $c_-$ negative double points if and only if it can be converted into an Alexander polynomial one knot via changing $c_+$ positive crossings and $c_-$ negative crossings. In $4$-manifolds other than $D^4$ and $S^4$, applications include measuring the extent to which immersed $\mathbb{Z}$-surfaces are determined by the equivariant intersection form of their exterior. Along the way, we prove that any two $\mathbb{Z}^2$-concordances between the Hopf link and an Alexander polynomial one link $L$ are homeomorphic rel. boundary.

Abstract:We examine surgery on a knot in $S^3$ to determine surgery obstructions to Seifert fibered integral homology spheres. We find such surgery obstructions using Heegaard Floer, Knot Floer homology and the mapping cone formula for computing Heegaard Floer homology of surgery on a knot. Here however, we take a different approach and use the number of singular fibers of a Seifert fibered integral homology sphere, which is the toroidal structure, to find obstructions. This approach allows us to show that genus one knots cannot yield Seifert fibered integral homology spheres with six or more singular fibers. Some other obstructions are also presented for higher genus knots.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a knot in an integral homology 3-sphere $Y$, and $\Sigma$ the corresponding $n$-fold cyclic branched cover. Assuming that $\Sigma$ is a rational homology sphere (which is always the case when $n$ is a prime power), we give a formula for the Lefschetz number of the action that the covering translation induces on the reduced monopole homology of $\Sigma$. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the Seiberg--Witten equations on 3-orbifolds and of various $\eta$-invariants. We give several applications of our formula: (1) we calculate the Seiberg--Witten and Furuta--Ohta invariants for the mapping tori of all semi-free actions of $Z/n$ on integral homology 3-spheres; (2) we give a novel obstruction (in terms of the Jones polynomial) for the branched cover of a knot in $S^3$ being an $L$-space; (3) we give a new set of knot concordance invariants in terms of the monopole Lefschetz numbers of covering translations on the branched covers.
