Abstract:. Let K/k be a finite abelian extension of function fields with Galois group G . Using the Stickelberger elements associated to K/k studied by J. Tate, P. Deligne and D. Hayes, we construct an ideal I in the integral group ring ℤ[G] relative to the extension K/k , whose elements annihilate the group of divisor classes of degree zero of K and whose rank is equal to the degree of the extension. When K/k is a (wide or narrow) ray class extension, we compute the index of I in ℤ[G] , which is equal to the divisor class number of K up to a trivial factor.

Abstract:In this article, we define two new versions of integral and Frobenius closures of ideals which incorporate an auxiliary ideal and a real parameter. These additional ingredients are common in adjusting old definitions of ideal closures in order to generalize them to pairs, with an eye towards further applications in algebraic geometry. In the case of tight closure, similar generalizations exist due to N. Hara and K.I. Yoshida, as well as A. Vraciu. We study their basic properties and give computationally effective calculations of the adjusted tight, Frobenius, and integral closures in the case of affine semigroup rings in terms of the convex geometry of the associated exponent sets.

Abstract:Let $R=\oplus_{m\geq 0}R_m$ be a standard graded Noetherian domain over a field $R_0$ and $I\subseteq J$ be two graded ideals in $R$ such that $0<\mbox{height}\;I\leq \mbox{height}\;J <d$. Then we give a set of numerical characterizations of the integral dependence of $I$ and ${J}$ in terms of certain multiplicities. A novelty of the approach is that it does not involve localization and only requires checking computable and well-studied invariants. In particular, we show the following: let $S=R[Y]$, $\mathsf{I} = IS$ and $\mathsf{J} = JS$ and $\bf d$ be the maximum generating degree of both $I$ and $J$. Then the following statements are equivalent. (1) $\overline{I} = \overline{J}$. (2) $\varepsilon(I)=\varepsilon(J)$ and $e_i(R[It]) = e_i(R[Jt])$ for all $0\leq i <\dim(R/I)$. (3) $e\big(R[It]_{\Delta_{(c,1)}}\big) = e\big(R[Jt]_{\Delta_{(c,1)}}\big)$ and $e\big(S[\mathsf{I}t]_{\Delta_{(c,1)}}\big) = e\big(S[\mathsf{J}t]_{\Delta_{(c,1)}}\big)$ for some integer $c>{\bf d}$. The statement $(2)$ generalizes the classical result of Rees. The statement $(3)$ gives the integral dependence criteria in terms of the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicities of certain standard graded domains over $R_0$. As a consequence of $(3)$, we also get an equivalent statement in terms of (Teissier) mixed multiplicities. Apart from several well-established results, the proofs of these results use the theory of density functions which was developed recently by the authors.

Abstract:We consider ideals in a polynomial ring generated by collections of power sum polynomials, and obtain conditions under which these define complete intersection rings, normal domains, and unique factorization domains. We also settle a key case of a conjecture of Conca, Krattenthaler, and Watanabe, and prove other results in that direction.

In previous work, we showed that for any graded ideal , then , for all , where is the initial degree of I and b is a suitable integer. In the present paper, using polarization, we extend Simon conjecture to any monomial ideal. As a consequence, if Simon conjecture holds, I is a monomial ideal generated in a single degree and all powers of I have linear quotients, then . This fact suggests that if I is an equigenerated monomial ideal with linear powers, then , for all . We verify this conjecture for monomial ideals with linear powers having , edge ideals with linear resolution, polymatroidal ideals, and Hibi ideals.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field, let $A$ and $B$ be polynomial rings over $k$, and let $S= A \otimes_k B$. Let $I \subseteq A$ and $J \subseteq B$ be monomial ideals. We establish a binomial expansion for rational powers of $I+J \subseteq S$ in terms of those of $I$ and $J$. Particularly, for a positive rational number $u$, we prove that $(I+J)_u = \sum_{0 \le \omega \le u, \ \omega \in \mathbb{Q}} I_\omega J_{u-\omega},$ and that the sum on the right hand side is a finite sum. This finite sum can be made more precise using jumping numbers of rational powers of $I$ and $J$. We further give sufficient conditions for this formula to hold for the integral closures of powers of $I+J$ in terms of those of $I$ and $J$. Under these conditions, we provide explicit formulas for the depth and regularity of $\overline{(I+J)^k}$ in terms of those of powers of $I$ and $J$.

A new parametrization for ideal classes in rings defined by binary forms, and applications

Abstract:We give a parametrization of square roots of the ideal class of the inverse different of rings defined by binary forms in terms of the orbits of a coregular representation. This parametrization, which can be construed as a new integral model of a ``higher composition law'' discovered by Bhargava and generalized by Wood, was the missing ingredient needed to solve a range of previously intractable open problems concerning distributions of class groups, Selmer groups, and related objects. For instance, in this paper, we apply the parametrization to bound the average size of the $2$-class group in families of number fields defined by binary $n$-ic forms, where $n \geq 3$ is an arbitrary integer, odd or even; in the paper [41], we applied it to prove that most integral odd-degree binary forms fail to primitively represent a square; and in the paper [11], joint with Bhargava and Shankar, we applied it to bound the second moment of the size of the $2$-Selmer group of elliptic curves.

A study of $v$-number for some monomial ideals

Abstract:In this paper, we give formulas for $v$-number of edge ideals of some graphs like path, cycle, 1-clique sum of a path and a cycle, 1-clique sum of two cycles and join of two graphs. For an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary monomial ideal $I\subset S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_t]$, we provide an explicit expression of $v$-number of $I$, denoted by $v(I)$, and give an upper bound of $v(I)$ in terms of the degree of its generators. We show that for a monomial ideal $I$, $v(I^{n+1})$ is bounded above by a linear polynomial for large $n$ and for certain classes of monomial ideals, the upper bound is achieved for all $n\geq 1$. For $\mathfrak m$-primary monomial ideal $I$ we prove that $v(I)\leq$ reg$(S/I)$ and their difference can be arbitrarily large.

Counting integral points on symmetric varieties with applications to arithmetic statistics

Abstract:In this article, we combine Bhargava's geometry-of-numbers methods with the dynamical point-counting methods of Eskin--McMullen and Benoist--Oh to develop a new technique for counting integral points on symmetric varieties lying within fundamental domains for coregular representations. As applications, we study the distribution of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group in thin families of cubic number fields, as well as the distribution of the $2$-Selmer groups in thin families of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. For example, our results suggest that the existence of a generator of the ring of integers with small norm has an increasing effect on the average size of the $2$-torsion subgroup of the class group, relative to the Cohen--Lenstra predictions.

Finite numbers of initial ideals in non-Noetherian polynomial rings

Abstract:In this article, we generalize the well-known result that ideals of Noetherian polynomial rings have only finitely many initial ideals to the situation of ascending ideal chains in non-Noetherian polynomial rings. More precisely, we study ideal chains in the polynomial ring $R=K[x_{i,j}\,|\,1\leq i\leq c,j\in N]$ that are invariant under the action of the monoid $Inc(N)$ of strictly increasing functions on $N$, which acts on $R$ by shifting the second variable index. We show that for every such ideal chain, the number of initial ideal chains with respect to term orders on $R$ that are compatible with the action of $Inc(N)$ is finite. As a consequence of this, we will see that $Inc(N)$-invariant ideals of $R$ have only finitely many initial ideals with respect to $Inc(N)$-compatible term orders. The article also addresses the question of how many such term orders exist. We give a complete list of the $Inc(N)$-compatible term orders for the case $c=1$ and show that there are infinitely many for $c >1$. This answers a question by Hillar, Kroner, Leykin.

Integral points on varieties with infinite étale fundamental group

Abstract:We study integral points on varieties with infinite étale fundamental groups. More precisely, for a number field $F$ and $X/F$ a smooth projective variety, we prove that for any geometrically Galois cover $\varphi\colon Y \to X$ of degree at least $2\dim(X)^2$, there exists an ample line bundle $\mathscr{L}$ on $Y$ such that for a general member $D$ of the complete linear system $|\mathscr{L}|$, $D$ is geometrically irreducible and any set of $\varphi(D)$-integral points on $X$ is finite. We apply this result to varieties with infinite étale fundamental group to give new examples of irreducible, ample divisors on varieties for which finiteness of integral points is provable.

Abstract:We study the Rees valuations and rational powers of several classes of invariant ideals, providing explicit descriptions in terms of certain polyhedra. This allows us to show that a version of Musta\c{t}\u{a}-Takagi's summation formula for rational powers holds for these ideals. Moreover, for arbitrary ideals over the complex numbers, we prove a weaker version of this formula that holds for high enough rational numbers. Our methods lead to a definition of rational powers of ideal sheaves in normal complex varieties inspired by work of Lejeune-Jalabert-Teissier and Lazarsfeld.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is the fine structure of the ideals in the title, with emphasis on the properties of the associated Rees algebra and the special fiber. The watershed between the present approach and some of the previous work in the literature is that here one does not assume that the ideals in question satisfy the common generic properties. One exception is a recent work of N. P. H. Lan which inspired the present work. Here we recover and extend his work. We strongly focus on the behavior of the ideals of minors of the corresponding so-called Hilbert--Burch matrix and on conjugation features of the latter. We apply the results to three important models: linearly presented ideals of plane fat points, reciprocal ideals of hyperplane arrangements and linearly presented monomial ideals.

Abstract:Suppose $K$ is a number field and $a_K(m)$ is the number of integral ideals of norm equal to $m$ in $K$, then for any integer $l$, we asymptotically evaluate the sum \[ \sum_{m\leqslant T} a_K^l(m) \] as $T\to\infty$. We also consider the moments of the corresponding Dedekind zeta function. We prove lower bounds of expected order of magnitude and slightly improve the known upper bound for the second moment in the non-Galois case.

Integration on the Surreals

Abstract:Conway's real closed field $\mathbf{No}$ of surreal numbers is a sweeping generalization of the real numbers and the ordinals to which a number of elementary functions such as log and exponentiation have been shown to extend. The problems of identifying significant classes of functions that can be so extended and of defining integration for them have proven to be formidable. In this paper we address this and related unresolved issues by showing that extensions to $\mathbf{No}$, and thereby integrals, exist for most functions arising in practical applications. In particular, we show they exist for a large subclass of the \emph{resurgent functions}, a subclass that contains the functions that at $\infty$ are semi-algebraic, semi-analytic, analytic, meromorphic, and Borel summable as well as solutions to nonresonant linear and nonlinear meromorphic systems of ODEs or of difference equations. By suitable changes of variables we deal with arbitrarily located singular points. We further establish a sufficient condition for the theory to carry over to ordered exponential subfields of $\mathbf{No}$ more generally and illustrate the result with structures familiar from the surreal literature. The extensions of functions and integrals that concern us are constructive in nature, which permits us to work in NBG less the Axiom of Choice (for both sets and proper classes). Following the completion of the positive portion of the paper, it is shown that the existence of such constructive extensions and integrals of substantially more general types of functions (e.g. smooth functions) is obstructed by considerations from the foundations of mathematics.

Abstract:Assuming a weaker form of the Riemann hypothesis for Dedekind zeta functions by allowing Siegel zeros, we extend a classical result of Cramér on the number of primes in short intervals to prime ideals of the ring of integers in cyclotomic extensions with norms belonging to such intervals. The extension is uniform with respect to the degree of the cyclotomic extension. Our approach is based on the arithmetic of cyclotomic fields and analytic properties of their Dedekind zeta functions together with a lower bound for the number of primes over progressions in short intervals subject to similar assumptions. Uniformity with respect to the modulus of the progression is obtained and the lower bound turns out to be best possible, apart from constants, as shown by the Brun–Titchmarsh theorem.

Abstract:We study an asymptotic formula for counting integral points over an equation defined by a non-degenerated indefinite integral ternary quadratic form $f$ representing a non-zero integer $a$ such that $-a\cdot det(f)$ is square over a number field. In particular, we prove that the finite part of this asymptotic formula is given by the product of local density times $1-p^{-1}$ over all finite primes $p$ over $\Bbb Z$.
