Abstract:It is known that the Eulerian and Lagrangian structures of fluid flow can be drastically different; for example, ideal fluid flow can have a trivial (static) Eulerian structure, while displaying chaotic streamlines. Here we show that ideal flow with limited spatial smoothness (an initial vorticity that is just a little better than continuous), nevertheless has time-analytic Lagrangian trajectories before the initial limited smoothness is lost. For proving such results we use a little-known Lagrangian formulation of ideal fluid flow derived by Cauchy in 1815 in a manuscript submitted for a prize of the French Academy. This formulation leads to simple recurrence relations among the time-Taylor coefficients of the Lagrangian map from initial to current fluid particle positions; the coefficients can then be bounded using elementary methods. We first consider various classes of incompressible fluid flow, governed by the Euler equations, and then turn to a case of compressible flow of cosmological relevance, governed by the Euler-Poisson equations.

Abstract:This work is concerned with the relaxation-time limit of the multidimensional isothermal Euler equations with relaxation. We show that Coulombel-Goudon's results (2007) can hold in the weaker and more general Sobolev space of fractional order. The method of proof used is the Littlewood-Paley decomposition.

Abstract:We show that, for any Leray solution $u$ to the $3$D Navier--Stokes equations with $u_0\in L^2$, the associated Lagrangian trajectories are unique for Lebesgue a.e. initial condition. Additionally, if $u_0\in H^{1/2}$, then pathwise uniqueness is established for the stochastic Lagrangian trajectories starting from every initial condition. The result sharpens and extends the original one by Robinson and Sadowski (Nonlinearity 2009) and is based on rather different techniques. A key role is played by a newly established asymmetric Lusin--Lipschitz property of Leray solutions $u$, in the framework of (random) Regular Lagrangian flows.

Abstract:We prove a novel stability estimate in $L^\infty _t (L^p _x)$ between the regular Lagrangian flow of a Sobolev vector field and a piecewise affine approximation of such flow. This approximation of the flow is obtained by a (sort of) explicit Euler method, and it is the crucial tool to prove approximation results for the solution of the continuity equation by using the representation of the solution as the push-forward via the regular Lagrangian flow of the initial datum. We approximate the solution in two ways, one probabilistic and one deterministic, using different approximations for both the flow and the initial datum.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the following Euler-Lagrange system \[ \frac{d}{dt}\mathcal{L}_v(t,u(t),\dot u(t))=\mathcal{L}_x(t,u(t),\dot u(t))\quad \text{ for a.e. }t\in[-T,T],\quad u(-T)=u(T), \] where Lagrangian is given by $\mathcal{L}=F(t,x,v)+V(t,x)+\langle f(t), x\rangle$, growth conditions are determined by an anisotropic G-function and some geometric conditions at infinity. We consider two cases: with and without forcing term $f$. Using a general version of the Mountain Pass Theorem and Ekeland's variational principle we prove the existence of at least two nontrivial periodic solutions in an anisotropic Orlicz-Sobolev space.

Abstract:This paper establishes bounds on norms of all orders for solutions on the global attractor of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations, complexified in time. Specifically, for periodic boundary conditions on [0, L](2), and a force g is an element of D(A((alpha-1)/2)), we show that there is a fixed strip about the real-time axis on which a uniform bound vertical bar A(alpha)u vertical bar < m(alpha)nu kappa(alpha)(0) holds for each alpha is an element of N. Here nu is viscosity, kappa(0) = 2 pi/L, and m(alpha) is explicitly given in terms of g and alpha. We show that if any element in A is in D(A(alpha)), then all of A is in D(A(alpha)), and likewise with D(A(alpha)) replaced by C-infinity(Omega). We demonstrate the universality of this 'all for one, one for all' law is also shown to hold for the union of a hierarchical set of function classes. Finally, we treat the question of whether the zero solution can be in the global attractor for a non-zero force by showing that if this is so, the force must be in a particular function class.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to investigating mean dynamics and stability analysis for stochastic 3D Lagrangian-averaged Navier–Stokes (LANS) equations driven by infinite delay on unbounded domains. We first prove the existence of a unique solution to stochastic 3D LANS equations with infinite delay when the non-delayed external force is locally integrable, the delay term is globally Lipschitz continuous and the nonlinear diffusion term is locally Lipschitz continuous. This enables us to define a mean random dynamical system. Besides, we find that such a dynamical system possesses a unique weak pullback mean random attractor, which is a minimal, weakly compact and weakly pullback attracting set. Furthermore, we prove the existence and uniqueness of stationary solutions (equilibrium solutions) to the corresponding deterministic equation via the classical Galerkin method, the Lax–Milgram and the Brouwer fixed theorems. The stability properties of stationary solutions are also considered. By a direct approach, we first show the local stability of stationary solutions when the delay term has a general form and then apply the abstract results to two kinds of infinite delays. Second, we establish the exponential stability of stationary solutions in the case of unbounded distributed delay. Third, we investigate the asymptotic stability of stationary solutions in the case of unbounded variable delay by constructing appropriate Lyapunov functionals. Eventually, we discuss the polynomial asymptotic stability in the particular case of proportional delay.

Abstract:We derive the spin Euler equation for ideal flows by applying the spherical Clebsch mapping. This equation is based on the spin vector rather than the velocity. It enables a feasible Lagrangian study of fluid dynamics, as the isosurface of a spin-vector component is a vortex surface and material surface in ideal flows. The spin Euler equation is also equivalent to a special case of the Landau-Lifshitz equation with a specific effective magnetic field, revealing a possible connection between ideal flow and magnetic crystal. We conduct direct numerical simulations of three ideal flows of the vortex knot, vortex link and modified Taylor-Green flow by solving the spin Euler equation. The evolution of the Lagrangian vortex surface illustrates that the regions with large vorticity are rapidly stretched into spiral sheets. We establish a non-blowup criterion for the spin Euler equation, suggesting that the Laplacian of the spin vector must diverge if the solution forms a singularity at some finite time. The DNS result exhibits a pronounced double-exponential growth of the maximum norm of Laplacian of the spin vector, showing no evidence of the finite-time singularity formation if the double-exponential growth holds at later times. Moreover, the present criterion with Lagrangian nature appears to be more sensitive than the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion in detecting the flows that are incapable of producing finite-time singularities.

Abstract:Using the Mountain Pass Theorem, we establish the existence of periodic solution for Euler-Lagrange equation. Lagrangian consists of kinetic part (an anisotropic G-function), potential part $K-W$ and a forcing term. We consider two situations: $G$ satisfying $\Delta_2\cap\nabla_2$ in infinity and globally. We give conditions on the growth of the potential near zero for both situations.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that for all solutions of the 2d Euler equations with initial vorticity with finite Sobolev smoothness then an initial data dependent norm of the associated Lagrangian flow blows up in infinite time at least like $t^{\frac{1}{3}}$. This initial data dependent norm quantifies the exact $L^2$ decay of the Fourier transform of the solution. This adapted norm turns out to be the exact quantity that controls a low to high frequency cascade which we then show to be the quantitative phenomenon behind the Lyapunov construction by Shnirelman.

Abstract:We consider the three-dimensional Euler equations in a domain with a free boundary with no surface tension. We construct unique local-in-time solutions in the Lagrangian setting for $u_0 \in H^{2.5+\delta }$ such that the Rayleigh-Taylor condition holds and $\mathrm{curl}\,u_0 \in H^{2+\delta }$ in an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the free boundary. We show that the result is optimal in the sense that $H^{3+\delta}$ regularity of the Lagrangian deformation near the free boundary can be ensured if and only if initial vorticity has $H^{2+\delta}$ regularity of vorticity near the free boundary.

Abstract:We study the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for undiscounted exit time control problems with general nonnegative Lagrangians using the dynamic programming approach. We prove theorems characterizing the value function as the unique bounded-from-below viscosity solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation which is null on the target. The result applies to problems with the property that all trajectories satisfying a certain integral condition must stay in a bounded set. We allow problems for which the Lagrangian is not uniformly bounded below by positive constants, in which the hypotheses of the known uniqueness results for Hamilton-Jacobi equations are not satisfied. We apply our theorems to eikonal equations from geometric optics, shape-from-shading equations from image processing, and variants of the Fuller Problem.
