Abstract:The anthropic principle implies that life can emerge and be sustained only in a narrow range of values of fundamental constants. Here we show that anthropic arguments can set powerful constraints on {\em transient} variations of the fine-structure constant $\alpha$ over the past 4 billion years since the appearance of lifeforms on Earth. We argue that the passage through Earth of a macroscopic dark matter clump with a value of $\alpha$ inside differing substantially from its nominal value would make Earth uninhabitable. We demonstrate that in the regime of extreme variation of $\alpha$, the periodic table of elements is truncated, water fails to serve as a universal solvent, and protons become unstable. Thereby, the anthropic principle constrains the likelihood of such encounters on a 4-billion-year timescale. This enables us to improve existing astrophysical bounds on certain dark matter model couplings by several orders of magnitude.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to limit the transient change range of the fine - structure constant (α) in the past 4 billion years through the anthropic principle. Specifically, the author explores what impact it would have on the living conditions on Earth if the Earth passed through macroscopic dark matter clumps with different α values. The paper points out that if the α value changes significantly, the periodic table of elements will be truncated, water cannot be used as a universal solvent, and protons become unstable, all of which will make the Earth no longer suitable for life. Therefore, by considering the fact that the Earth has been able to support life in the past 4 billion years, several orders of magnitude improvements can be made to certain coupling parameters in the dark matter model, thereby setting more stringent constraints. ### Analysis of the Core Problems in the Paper 1. **Application of the Anthropic Principle**: - The anthropic principle holds that life can only emerge and be maintained within a narrow range of fundamental constants (such as the fine - structure constant α). - The author uses this principle to explore the impact of transient changes in the fine - structure constant α in the past 4 billion years on life on Earth. 2. **Impact of Transient Changes**: - If the Earth passes through a macroscopic dark matter clump with an α value significantly different from the standard value, it will lead to drastic changes in the living conditions on Earth. - Specific impacts include: - **Changes in the Periodic Table of Elements**: Extreme changes in the α value will lead to the truncation of the periodic table of elements, leaving only light elements from hydrogen to sulfur. - **Changes in the Properties of Water**: Water will lose its ability to be a universal solvent because its molecular structure will change from bent to linear and lose its dipole moment. - **Proton Stability**: Protons may become unstable and undergo β+ decay or atomic electron capture. 3. **Theoretical Models and Calculations**: - The author uses the four - component Dirac equation and non - perturbative methods to study the impact of changes in the α value on hydrogen ions and multi - electron atoms. - For example, when the α value increases to the critical value α*, the 1s1/2 energy level of the hydrogen atom will "dive" into the Dirac sea, resulting in an unstable ground state. - For multi - electron atoms, such as oxygen atoms, an increase in the α value will lead to a rearrangement of the electron orbital energies, which in turn will affect the molecular structure. 4. **Constraints on the Dark Matter Model**: - By considering the fact that the Earth has not been covered by such dark matter clumps in the past 4 billion years, the author has set strict constraints on certain coupling parameters of the dark matter model. - These constraints are several orders of magnitude better than the existing astrophysical constraints. ### Conclusion Through the anthropic principle, the paper proposes a novel method to limit the transient changes in the fine - structure constant α in the past 4 billion years. This not only helps to understand the properties of dark matter but also provides a new perspective for exploring other environments in the universe that may support life.
