Abstract:$\newcommand{\eps}{\varepsilon}\newcommand{\tldO}{\widetilde{O}}$Consider the problem of constructing weak $\eps$-nets where the stabbing elements are lines or $k$-flats instead of points. We study this problem in the simplest setting where it is still interesting -- namely, the uniform measure of volume over the hypercube $[0,1]^d\bigr.$. Specifically, a $(k,\eps)$-net is a set of $k$-flats, such that any convex body in $[0,1]^d$ of volume larger than $\eps$ is stabbed by one of these $k$-flats. We show that for $k \geq 1$, one can construct $(k,\eps)$-nets of size $O(1/\eps^{1-k/d})$. We also prove that any such net must have size at least $\Omega(1/\eps^{1-k/d})$. As a concrete example, in three dimensions all $\eps$-heavy bodies in $[0,1]^3$ can be stabbed by $\Theta(1/\eps^{2/3})$ lines. Note, that these bounds are \emph{sublinear} in $1/\eps$, and are thus somewhat surprising. The new construction also works for points providing a weak $\eps$-net of size $O(\tfrac{1}{\eps}\log^{d-1} \tfrac{1}{\eps} )$.

Abstract:In many interesting situations the size of epsilon-nets depends only on $\epsilon$ together with different complexity measures. The aim of this paper is to give a systematic treatment of such complexity measures arising in Discrete and Computational Geometry and Statistical Learning, and to bridge the gap between the results appearing in these two fields. As a byproduct, we obtain several new upper bounds on the sizes of epsilon-nets that generalize/improve the best known general guarantees. In particular, our results work with regimes when small epsilon-nets of size $o(\frac{1}{\epsilon})$ exist, which are not usually covered by standard upper bounds. Inspired by results in Statistical Learning we also give a short proof of the Haussler's upper bound on packing numbers.

Abstract:For a general (possibly infinite) system of closed convex sets in a normed linear space we provide several sufficient conditions for ensuring the strong conical hull intersection property. One set of sufficient conditions is given in terms of the finite subsystems while the other sets are in terms of the relaxed interior-point conditions together with appropriate continuity of the associated set-valued function on the (topologized) index set I. In the special case when I is finite and X is finite dimensional, one of these results reduces to a classical result of Rockafellar.

Abstract:The present work concerns generalized convex sets in the real multi-dimensional Euclidean space, known as weakly $1$-convex and weakly $1$-semiconvex sets. An open set is called weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex) if, through every boundary point of the set, there passes a straight line (a closed ray) not intersecting the set. A closed set is called weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex) if it is approximated from the outside by a family of open weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex) sets. A point of the complement of a set to the whole space is a $1$-nonconvexity ($1$-nonsemiconvexity) point of the set if every straight line passing through the point (every ray emanating from the point) intersects the set. It is proved that if the collection of all $1$-nonconvexity ($1$-nonsemiconvexity) points corresponding to an open weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex) set is non-empty, then it is open. It is also proved that the non-empty interior of a closed weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex) set in the space is weakly $1$-convex (weakly $1$-semiconvex).

Abstract:In this paper we show that if one has a grid A x B, where A and B are sets of n real numbers, then there can be only very few ``rich'' lines in certain quite small families. Indeed, we show that if the family has lines taking on n^epsilon distinct slopes, and where each line is parallel to n^epsilon others (so, at least n^(2 epsilon) lines in total), then at least one of these lines must fail to be ``rich''. This result immediately implies non-trivial sum-product inequalities; though, our proof makes use of the Szemeredi-Trotter inequality, which Elekes used in his argument for lower bounds on |C+C| + |C.C|.

Online Epsilon Net and Piercing Set for Geometric Concepts

Abstract:VC-dimension and $\varepsilon$-nets are key concepts in Statistical Learning Theory. Intuitively, VC-dimension is a measure of the size of a class of sets. The famous $\varepsilon$-net theorem, a fundamental result in Discrete Geometry, asserts that if the VC-dimension of a set system is bounded, then a small sample exists that intersects all sufficiently large sets. In online learning scenarios where data arrives sequentially, the VC-dimension helps to bound the complexity of the set system, and $\varepsilon$-nets ensure the selection of a small representative set. This sampling framework is crucial in various domains, including spatial data analysis, motion planning in dynamic environments, optimization of sensor networks, and feature extraction in computer vision, among others. Motivated by these applications, we study the online $\varepsilon$-net problem for geometric concepts with bounded VC-dimension. While the offline version of this problem has been extensively studied, surprisingly, there are no known theoretical results for the online version to date. We present the first deterministic online algorithm with an optimal competitive ratio for intervals in $\mathbb{R}$. Next, we give a randomized online algorithm with a near-optimal competitive ratio for axis-aligned boxes in $\mathbb{R}^d$, for $d\le 3$. Furthermore, we introduce a novel technique to analyze similar-sized objects of constant description complexity in $\mathbb{R}^d$, which may be of independent interest. Next, we focus on the continuous version of this problem, where ranges of the set system are geometric concepts in $\mathbb{R}^d$ arriving in an online manner, but the universe is the entire space, and the objective is to choose a small sample that intersects all the ranges.

Abstract:In the present paper, we study the characterization issue of the weak sharp minima properties for convex infinite optimization problems in normed linear spaces. We develop a new approach to establish several complete geometric characterizations for the global/bounded/local weak sharp minima property, which extend/improve the corresponding ones in this direction by removing/relaxing the key topological assumptions made on the index set. As by-products, some complete characterizations of the global/bounded/local weak sharp minima are obtained for a subset of the level set of a given convex function (not necessarily the level set itself) in terms of the normal cones and the subdifferentials of the involved convex subset and convex function. These characterization results are of independent interest in extending/improving the existing ones on characterizing the weak sharp minima for convex optimization problems.

Abstract:Let $E \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a compact set, and $f:E \to \mathbb{R}$. How can we tell if there exists a convex extension $F \in C^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ of $f$, i.e. satisfying $F|_E = f|_E$? Assuming such an extension exists, how small can one take the Lipschitz constant $\text{Lip}(\nabla F): = \sup_{x,y \in \mathbb{R}^n, x \neq y} \frac{|\nabla F(x) - \nabla F(y)|}{|x-y|}$? We provide an answer to these questions for the class of strongly convex functions by proving that there exist constants $k^\# \in \mathbb{N}$ and $C>0$ depending only on the dimension $n$, such that if for every subset $S \subset E$, $\#S \leq k^\#$, there exists an $\eta$-strongly convex function $F^S \in C^{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ satisfying $F^S|_S=f|_S$ and $\text{Lip}(\nabla F^S) \leq M$, then there exists an ${\frac{\eta}{C}}$-strongly convex function $F \in C^{1,1}_c(\mathbb{R}^n)$ satisfying $F|_E = f|_E$, and $\text{Lip}(\nabla F) \leq C M^2/\eta$. Further, we prove a Finiteness Principle for the space of convex functions in $C^{1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and that the sharp finiteness constant for this space is $k^\#=5$.

Strictly convex norms and the local diameter two property

Abstract:We introduce and study a strict monotonicity property of the norm in solid Banach lattices of real functions that prevents such spaces from having the local diameter two property. Then we show that any strictly convex 1-symmetric norm on $\ell_\infty(\mathbb N)$ possesses this strict monotonicity property. In the opposite direction, we show that any Banach space which is strictly convex renormable and contains a complemented copy of $c_0,$ admits an equivalent strictly convex norm for which the space has the local diameter two property. In particular, this enables us to construct a strictly convex norm on $c_0(\Gamma),$ where $\Gamma$ is uncountable, for which the space has a 1-unconditional basis and the local diameter two property.

Abstract:This is the first paper dealing with the study of weak sharp minima for constrained optimization problems on Riemannian manifolds, which are important in many applications. We consider the notions of local weak sharp minima, boundedly weak sharp minima, and global weak sharp minima for such problems and establish their complete characterizations in the case of convex problems on finite-dimensional Riemannian manifolds and Hadamard manifolds. A number of the results obtained in this paper are also new for the case of conventional problems in finite-dimensional Euclidean spaces. Our methods involve appropriate tools of variational analysis and generalized differentiation on Riemannian and Hadamard manifolds developed and efficiently implemented in this paper.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of strongly orthogonal set relative to an element in the sense of Birkhoff-James in a normed linear space to find a necessary and sufficient condition for an element $ x $ of the unit sphere $ S_{X}$ to be an exposed point of the unit ball $ B_X .$ We then prove that a normed linear space is strictly convex iff for each element x of the unit sphere there exists a bounded linear operator A on X which attains its norm only at the points of the form $ \lambda x $ with $ \lambda \in S_{K} $.

Abstract:We report on some recent progress regarding combinatorial properties in convexity spaces with a bounded Radon number. In particular, we discuss the relationship between the Radon number, the colorful and fractional Helly properties, weak $\varepsilon$-nets, and $(p,q)$-theorems. As an application of the theory of convexity spaces we introduce new classes of uniform hypergraphs and show that they are $\chi$-bounded.

Abstract:Convex curvature properties are important in designing and analyzing convex optimization algorithms in the Hilbertian or Riemannian settings. In the case of the Hilbertian setting, strongly convex sets are well studied. Herein, we propose various definitions of strong convexity for uniquely geodesic sets in a Riemannian manifold. We study their relationship, propose tools to determine the geodesic strongly convex nature of sets, and analyze the convergence of optimization algorithms over those sets. In particular, we demonstrate that the Riemannian Frank-Wolfe algorithm enjoys a global linear convergence rate when the Riemannian scaling inequalities hold.

Abstract:Let $f:[0,1]^d\to\mathbb{R}$ be a completely monotone integrand as defined by Aistleitner and Dick (2015) and let points $\boldsymbol{x}_0,\dots,\boldsymbol{x}_{n-1}\in[0,1]^d$ have a non-negative local discrepancy (NNLD) everywhere in $[0,1]^d$. We show how to use these properties to get a non-asymptotic and computable upper bound for the integral of $f$ over $[0,1]^d$. An analogous non-positive local discrepancy (NPLD) property provides a computable lower bound. It has been known since Gabai (1967) that the two dimensional Hammersley points in any base $b\ge2$ have non-negative local discrepancy. Using the probabilistic notion of associated random variables, we generalize Gabai's finding to digital nets in any base $b\ge2$ and any dimension $d\ge1$ when the generator matrices are permutation matrices. We show that permutation matrices cannot attain the best values of the digital net quality parameter when $d\ge3$. As a consequence the computable absolutely sure bounds we provide come with less accurate estimates than the usual digital net estimates do in high dimensions. We are also able to construct high dimensional rank one lattice rules that are NNLD. We show that those lattices do not have good discrepancy properties: any lattice rule with the NNLD property in dimension $d\ge2$ either fails to be projection regular or has all its points on the main diagonal.

Abstract:A set $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ is said to be spectral if the space $L^2(\Omega)$ admits an orthogonal basis of exponential functions. Fuglede (1974) conjectured that $\Omega$ is spectral if and only if it can tile the space by translations. While this conjecture was disproved for general sets, it was recently proved that the Fuglede conjecture does hold for the class of convex bodies in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The proof was based on a new geometric necessary condition for spectrality, called "weak tiling". In this paper we study further properties of the weak tiling notion, and present applications to convex bodies, non-convex polytopes, product domains and Cantor sets of positive measure.
