Abstract:For each $n \geq 2$, $l \geq 3$, let ${ES}_L (l,n)$ be the minimum $N$ such that every family of $N$-lines in the plane contains either $l$ concurrent lines or $n$ lines in convex position. In this papar, we give the upper and lower bounds for $ES_L (l,n)$. This is one of the extensions of the line version of Erdös-Szekeres convex polygon problem.

On Distinct Angles in the Plane

Abstract:We prove that if $N$ points lie in convex position in the plane then they determine $N^{1+ 3/23-o(1)}$ distinct angles, provided the points do not lie on a common circle. This is the first super-linear bound on the distinct angles problem that has received recent attention. This is derived from a more general claim that if $N$ points in the convex position in the real plane determine $KN$ distinct angles, then $K=\Omega(N^{1/4})$ or $\Omega(N/K)$ points are co-circular. The proof makes use of the implicit order one can give to points in convex position, recently used by Solymosi. Convex position also allows us to divide our set into two large ordered pieces. We use the squeezing lemma and the level sets of repeated angles to estimate the number of angles formed between these pieces. We obtain the main theorem using Stevens and Warren's convexity versus sum-set bound.

Abstract:We prove that any subset $A \subseteq [3]^n$ with $3^{-n}|A| \ge (\log\log\log\log n)^{-c}$ contains a combinatorial line of length $3$, i.e., $x, y, z \in A$, not all equal, with $x_i=y_i=z_i$ or $(x_i,y_i,z_i)=(0,1,2)$ for all $i = 1, 2, \dots, n$. This improves on the previous best bound of $3^{-n}|A| \ge \Omega((\log^* n)^{-1/2})$ of [D.H.J. Polymath, Ann. of Math. 2012].

Abstract:In this paper, we deal with the question; under what conditions the points $P_i(xi,yi)$ $(i = 1,\cdots, n)$ form a convex polygon provided $x_1 < \cdots < x_n$ holds. One of the main findings of the paper can be stated as follows: "Let $P_1(x_1,y_1),\cdots ,P_n(x_n,y_n)$ are $n$ distinct points ($n\geq3$) with $x_1<\cdots<x_n$. We show that in a plane if any $n$ points are scattered in such a way that their horizontal and vertical distances preserve some specific monotonic properties; then those points form a $2$-dimensional convex polytope.

Abstract:An old problem in discrete geometry, originating with Kupitz, asks whether there is a fixed natural number $k$ such that every finite set of points in the plane has a line through at least two of its points where the number of points on either side of this line differ by at most $k$. We give a negative answer to a natural variant of this problem, showing that for every natural number $k$ there exists a finite set of points in the plane together with a pseudoline arrangement such that each pseudoline contains at least two points and there is a pseudoline through any pair of points where the number of points on either side of each pseudoline differ by at least $k$.

Abstract:Let $P$ be a set of $n$ points in general position in the plane. Let $R$ be a set of $n$ points disjoint from $P$ such that for every $x,y \in P$ the line through $x$ and $y$ contains a point in $R$ outside of the segment delimited by $x$ and $y$. Abstract:Let $P$ be a set of $n$ points in general position on the plane. A set of closed convex polygons with vertices in $P$, and with pairwise disjoint interiors is called a convex decomposition of $P$ if their union is the convex hull of $P$, and no point of $P$ lies in the interior of the polygons. We show that there is a convex decomposition of $P$ with at most $\frac{4}{3}|I(P)|+\frac{1}{3}|B(P)|+1\le \frac{4}{3}|P|-2$ elements, where $B(P)\subseteq P$ is the set of points at the vertices of the convex hull of $P$, and $I(P)=P-B(P)$.

Abstract:One of the earliest results in enumerative combinatorial geometry is the following theorem of de Bruijn and Erdős: Every set of points $E$ in a projective plane determines at least $|E|$ lines, unless all the points are contained in a line. Motzkin and others extended the result to higher dimensions, who showed that every set of points $E$ in a projective space determines at least $|E|$ hyperplanes, unless all the points are contained in a hyperplane. Let $E$ be a spanning subset of a $d$-dimensional vector space. We show that, in the partially ordered set of subspaces spanned by subsets of $E$, there are at least as many $(d-k)$-dimensional subspaces as there are $k$-dimensional subspaces, for every $k$ at most $d/2$. This confirms the "top-heavy" conjecture of Dowling and Wilson for all matroids realizable over some field. The proof relies on the decomposition theorem package for $\ell$-adic intersection complexes.

On the minimum diameter of plane integral point sets

Abstract:Since ancient times mathematicians consider geometrical objects with integral side lengths. We consider plane integral point sets $\mathcal{P}$, which are sets of $n$ points in the plane with pairwise integral distances where not all the points are collinear. The largest occurring distance is called its diameter. Naturally the question about the minimum possible diameter $d(2,n)$ of a plane integral point set consisting of $n$ points arises. We give some new exact values and describe state-of-the-art algorithms to obtain them. It turns out that plane integral point sets with minimum diameter consist very likely of subsets with many collinear points. For this special kind of point sets we prove a lower bound for $d(2,n)$ achieving the known upper bound $n^{c_2\log\log n}$ up to a constant in the exponent. A famous question of Erdős asks for plane integral point sets with no 3 points on a line and no 4 points on a circle. Here, we talk of point sets in general position and denote the corresponding minimum diameter by $\dot{d}(2,n)$. Recently $\dot{d}(2,7)=22 270$ could be determined via an exhaustive search.

Abstract:We show that for any set $A\subseteq [0,1]^n$ with $\text{Vol}(A)\ge 1/2$ there exists a line $\ell $ such that the one-dimensional Lebesgue measure of $\ell \cap A$ is at least $\Omega ( n^{1/4} )$. The exponent $1/4$ is tight. More generally, for a probability measure $\mu $ on $\mathbb R ^n$ and $0<a<1$ define \begin{equation*} L(\mu ,a):= \inf_{A ; \mu(A) = a} \sup _{\ell \text{ line}} \big| \ell \cap A\big| \end{equation*} where $|\cdot | $ stands for the one-dimensional Lebesgue measure. We study the asymptotic behavior of $L(\mu ,a)$ when $\mu $ is a product measure and when $\mu $ is the uniform measure on the $\ell _p$ ball. We observe a rather unified behavior in a large class of product measures. On the other hand, for $\ell_p$ balls with $1 \leq p \leq \infty$ we find that there are phase transitions of different types.

On cliques in three-dimensional dense point-line arrangements

Abstract:As a variant of the celebrated Szemerédi--Trotter theorem, Guth and Katz proved that $m$ points and $n$ lines in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with at most $\sqrt{n}$ lines in a common plane must determine at most $O(m^{1/2}n^{3/4})$ incidences for $n^{1/2}\leq m\leq n^{3/2}$. This upper bound is asymptotically tight and has an important application in Erdős distinct distance problem. We characterize the extremal constructions towards the Guth--Katz bound by proving that such a large dense point-line arrangement must contain a $k$-clique in general position provided $m \ll n$. This is an analog of a result by Solymosi for extremal Szemerédi--Trotter constructions in the plane.

On $r$-Equichromatic Lines with few points in $\mathbb{C}^2$

Abstract:Let $P$ be a set of $n$ green and $n - k$ red points in $\mathbb{C}^2$. A line determined by $i$ green and $j$ red points such that $i + j \ge 2$ and $|i - j| \le r$ is called \emph{r-equichromatic}. We establish lower bounds for $1$-equichromatic and $2$-equichromatic lines. In particular, we show that if at most $2n-k-2$ points of $P$ are collinear, then the number of $1$-equichromatic lines passing through at most six points is at least $\frac{1}{4}(6n-k(k+3))$, and if at most $\frac{2}{3}(2n - k)$ points of $P$ are collinear, then the number of $2$-equichromatic lines passing through at most four points is at least $\frac{1}{6}(10n - k(k + 5))$.

Abstract:We show that each set of $n\ge 2$ points in the plane in general position has a straight-line matching with at least $(5n+1)/27$ edges whose segments form a connected set, and such a matching can be computed in $O(n \log n)$ time. As an upper bound, we show that for some planar point sets in general position the largest matching whose segments form a connected set has $\lceil \frac{n-1}{3}\rceil$ edges. We also consider a colored version, where each edge of the matching should connect points with different colors.

Abstract:Let $ES(n)$ be the minimal integer such that any set of $ES(n)$ points in the plane in general position contains $n$ points in convex position. The problem of estimating $ES(n)$ was first formulated by Erdős and Szekeres, who proved that $ES(n) \leq \binom{2n-4}{n-2}+1$. The current best upper bound, $\lim\sup_{n \to \infty} \frac{ES(n)}{\binom{2n-5}{n-2}}\le \frac{29}{32}$, is due to Vlachos. We improve this to $$\lim\sup_{n \to \infty} \frac{ES(n)}{\binom{2n-5}{n-2}}\le \frac{7}{8}.$$

Abstract:We give a construction of a convex set $A \subset \mathbb R$ with cardinality $n$ such that $A-A$ contains a convex subset with cardinality $\Omega (n^2)$. We also consider the following variant of this problem: given a convex set $A$, what is the size of the largest matching $M \subset A \times A$ such that the set \[ \{ a-b : (a,b) \in M \} \] is convex? We prove that there always exists such an $M$ with $|M| \geq \sqrt n$, and that this lower bound is best possible, up a multiplicative constant.

Linear Size Universal Point Sets for Classes of Planar Graphs

Abstract:A finite set $P$ of points in the plane is $n$-universal with respect to a class $\mathcal{C}$ of planar graphs if every $n$-vertex graph in $\mathcal{C}$ admits a crossing-free straight-line drawing with vertices at points of $P$. For the class of all planar graphs the best known upper bound on the size of a universal point set is quadratic and the best known lower bound is linear in $n$. Some classes of planar graphs are known to admit universal point sets of near linear size, however, there are no truly linear bounds for interesting classes beyond outerplanar graphs. In this paper, we show that there is a universal point set of size $2n-2$ for the class of bipartite planar graphs with $n$ vertices. The same point set is also universal for the class of $n$-vertex planar graphs of maximum degree $3$. The point set used for the results is what we call an exploding double chain, and we prove that this point set allows planar straight-line embeddings of many more planar graphs, namely of all subgraphs of planar graphs admitting a one-sided Hamiltonian cycle. The result for bipartite graphs also implies that every $n$-vertex plane graph has a $1$-bend drawing all whose bends and vertices are contained in a specific point set of size $4n-6$, this improves a bound of $6n-10$ for the same problem by Löffler and Tóth.

Abstract:A set of lines through the origin in Euclidean space is called equiangular when any pair of lines from the set intersects with each other at a common angle. We study the maximum size of equiangular lines in Euclidean space and use a graph theoretic approach to prove that all the currently known constructions for maximum equiangular lines in <math>Rd</math> cannot be added by any more lines to form a larger equiangular set of lines when <math>d=14,16,17,18,19</math>, and 20. We give new constructions of large equiangular lines which are 248 equiangular lines in <math>R42</math>, 200 equiangular lines in <math>R41</math>, 168 equiangular lines in <math>R40</math>, 152 equiangular lines in <math>R39</math> with angle 1/7, and 56 equiangular lines in <math>R18</math> with angle 1/5.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new problem concerning additive properties of convex sets. Let $S= \{s_1 < \dots <s_n \}$ be a set of real numbers and let $D_i(S)= \{s_x-s_y: 1 \leq x-y \leq i\}$. We expect that $D_i(S)$ is large, with respect to the size of $S$ and the parameter $i$, for any convex set $S$. We give a construction to show that $D_3(S)$ can be as small as $n+2$, and show that this is the smallest possible size. On the other hand, we use an elementary argument to prove a non-trivial lower bound for $D_4(S)$, namely $|D_4(S)| \geq \frac{5}{4}n -1$. For sufficiently large values of $i$, we are able to prove a non-trivial bound that grows with $i$ using incidence geometry.

Abstract:A set of n non-collinear points in the Euclidean plane defines at least n different lines. Chen and Chvtal in 2008 conjectured that the same results is true in metric spaces for an adequate definition of line. More recently, it was conjectured in 2018 by Aboulker et al. that any large enough bridgeless graph on n vertices defines a metric space that has at least n lines. We study the natural extension of Aboulker et al.'s conjecture into the context of quasi-metric spaces defined by digraphs of low diameter. We prove that it is valid for quasi-metric spaces defined by bipartite digraphs of diameter at most three, oriented graphs of diameter two and, digraphs of diameter three and directed girth four.
