Abstract:Let $x\geq 1$ be a large integer, and let $\mu:\mathbb{N}\longrightarrow\{-1,0,1\}$ be the Mobius function. This article proposes an effective asymptotic result for the autocorrelation function $\sum_{n \leq x} \mu(n) \mu(n+t) =O\left( e^{-c\sqrt{\log x}}\right) $, where $t\ne 0$ be a small fixed integer, and $c>0$ is a constant.

Abstract:Let $\gcd(m,n)$ denote the greatest common divisor of the positive integers $m$ and $n$, and let $\mu$ represent the M\" obius function. For any real number $x>5$, we define the summatory function of the M\" obius function involving the greatest common divisor as $ S_{\mu}(x) := \sum_{mn\leq x} \mu(\gcd(m,n)). $ In this paper, we present an asymptotic formula for $S_{\mu}(x)$. Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis, we delve further into the asymptotic behavior of $S_{\mu}(x)$ and derive a mean square estimate for its error term. Our proof employs the Perron formula, Parseval's theorem, complex integration techniques, and the properties of the Riemann zeta-function.

Abstract:Let $P^-(n)$ denote the smallest prime factor of a natural integer $n>1$. Furthermore let $\mu$ and $\omega$ denote respectively the Möbius function and the number of distinct prime factors function. We show that, given any set ${\scr P}$ of prime numbers with a natural density, we have $\sum_{P^-(n)\in \scr P}\mu(n)\omega(n)/n=0$ and provide a effective estimate for the rate of convergence. This extends a recent result of Alladi and Johnson, who considered the case when ${\scr P}$ is an arithmetic progression.

Abstract:It is shown that the cubic nonconventional ergodic average of order 2 with Möbius and Liouville weight converge almost surely to zero. As a consequence, we obtain that the Cesàro mean of the self-correlations and some moving average of the self-correlations of Möbius and Liouville functions converge to zero.

Abstract:We study the sums $\sum_{n\le X, (n,q)=1}\frac{\mu(n)}{n^s}\log^k\left(\frac{X}{n}\right)$, where $k\in\{0,1\}$, $s\in\mathbb{C}$, $\Re s>0$ and give asymptotic estimations in an explicit manner. In order to do so, we produce a large family of arithmetical identities and derive several applications. Along similar ideas, we present an appendix showing the inequality $\sum_{n\le X}\Lambda(n)/n\le \log X$, valid for any $X\geq 1$.

Distribution of neighboring values of the Liouville and Möbius functions

Abstract:Let $\lambda(n)$ and $\mu(n)$ denote the Liouville function and the Möbius function, respectively. In this study, relationships between the values of $\lambda(n)$ and $\lambda(n+h)$ up to $n\leq10^8$ for $1\leq h\leq1,000$ are explored. Chowla's conjecture predicts that the conditional expectation of $\lambda(n+h)$ given $\lambda(n)=1$ for $1\leq n\leq X$ converges to the conditional expectation of $\lambda(n+h)$ given $\lambda(n)=-1$ for $1\leq n\leq X$ as $X\rightarrow\infty$. However, for finite $X$, these conditional expectations are different. The observed difference, together with the significant difference in $\chi^2$ tests of independence, reveals hidden additive properties among the values of the Liouville function. Similarly, such additive structures for $\mu(n)$ for square-free $n$'s are identified. These findings pave the way for developing possible, and hopefully efficient, additive algorithms for these functions. The potential existence of fast, additive algorithms for $\lambda(n)$ and $\mu(n)$ may eventually provide scientific evidence supporting the belief that prime factorization of large integers should not be too difficult. For $1\leq h\leq1,000$, the study also tested the convergence speeds of Chowla's conjecture and found no relation on $h$.

Multiplicative recurrence of Möbius transformations

Abstract:We provide a necessary and sufficient condition under which the set defined by a Möbius transformation of positive integers is a set of multiplicative recurrence. A Khinchin-type lower bound is also established. This not only answers a question of Donoso--Le--Moreira--Sun but also strengthens their result. The key input in our proof is Tao's logarithmically averaged correlations of non-pretentious multiplicative functions.

An asymptotic property on a reciprocity law for the Bettin--Conrey cotangent sum

Abstract:In 2013 Bettin and Conrey have introduced a cotangent sum $c \colon \mathbb{Q}_{>0}\to \mathbb{R}$, which can be regarded as a variant of the Dedekind sum. They have discovered that the cotangent sum satisfies a kind of reciprocity laws. Roughly speaking, the reciprocity law for $c(x)$ means that there is a relation between $c(x)$ and $c(1/x)$ modulo holomorphic functions. Furthermore they have investigated Taylor coefficients $g_n$ of the implicit holomorphic function, which appears in the reciprocity law for $c(x)$, at $x=1$. As a result, they have obtained an asymptotic formula for $g_n$ as $n\to\infty$. In this paper we improve it to an asymptotic series expansion. This resolves a conjecture by Zagier. A new ingredient of this paper is to use the confluent hypergeometric function of the second kind.

Abstract:We give a new heuristic for all of the main terms in the quotient of products of L-functions averaged over a family. These conjectures generalize the recent conjectures for mean values of L-functions. Comparison is made to the analogous quantities for the characteristic polynomials of matrices averaged over a classical compact group.

Abstract:Let $f: \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{C}$ be a multiplicative function for which $$ \sum_{p : \, |f(p)| \neq 1} \frac{1}{p} = \infty. $$ We show under this condition alone that for any integer $h \neq 0$ the set $$ \{n \in \mathbb{N} : f(n) = f(n+h) \neq 0\} $$ has logarithmic density 0. We also prove a converse result, along with an application to the Fourier coefficients of holomorphic cusp forms. The proof involves analysing the value distribution of $f$ using the compositions $|f|^{it}$, relying crucially on various applications of Tao's theorem on logarithmically-averaged correlations of non-pretentious multiplicative functions. Further key inputs arise from the inverse theory of sumsets in continuous additive combinatorics.

Abstract:Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis (RH), Montgomery proved a theorem concerning pair correlation of zeros of the Riemann zeta-function. One consequence of this theorem is that, assuming RH, at least $67.9\%$ of the nontrivial zeros are simple. Here we obtain an unconditional form of Montgomery's theorem and show how to apply it to prove the following result on simple zeros: Assuming all the zeros $\rho=\beta+i\gamma$ of the Riemann zeta-function such that $T^{3/8}<\gamma\le T$ satisfy $|\beta-1/2|<1/(2\log T)$, %lie in the thin box $\{s=\sigma +it: |\sigma-1/2|<1/(2\log T),\ T^{3/8}<t\le T\}$, then, as $T$ tends to infinity, at least $61.7\%$ of these zeros are simple. The method of proof neither requires nor provides any information on whether any of these zeros are on or not on the critical line where $\beta=1/2$. We also obtain the same result under the weaker assumption of a strong zero-density hypothesis.

Abstract:We show that a certain class of exponential functions have zero anqie entropy and study the Mobius disjointness of them. We show a result on the correlation of the Mobius function with polynomial phases in almost all short intervals and arithmetic progressions simultaneously. As an application, we give an equivalent condition of Sarnak's Mobius disjointness conjecture in terms of the correlation between the Mobius function and arithmetic functions realized in any deterministic flow in short intervals on average.

Abstract:We study via Monte Carlo simulation the dynamics of the Nagel-Schreckenberg model on a finite system of length L with open boundary conditions and parallel updates. We find numerically that in both the high and low density regimes the autocorrelation function of the system density behaves like 1-|t|/tau with a finite support [-tau,tau]. This is in contrast to the usual exponential decay typical of equilibrium systems. Furthermore, our results suggest that in fact tau=L/c, and in the special case of maximum velocity 1 (corresponding to the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process) we can identify the exact dependence of c on the input, output and hopping rates. We also emphasize that the parameter tau corresponds to the integrated autocorrelation time, which plays a fundamental role in quantifying the statistical errors in Monte Carlo simulations of these models.

Abstract:The validity of the Riemann Hypothesis (RH) on the location of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann $\zeta$-function is directly related to the growth of the Mertens function $M(x) \,=\,\sum_{k=1}^x \mu(k)$, where $\mu(k)$ is the Möbius coefficient of the integer $k$: the RH is indeed true if the Mertens function goes asymptotically as $M(x) \sim x^{1/2 + \epsilon}$, where $\epsilon$ is an arbitrary strictly positive quantity. This behavior can be established on the basis of a new probabilistic approach based on the global properties of Mertens function. To this aim we derive a series of probabilistic results concerning the prime number distribution along the series of square-free numbers which shows that the Mertens function is subject to a normal distribution. We also show that the validity of the RH also implies the validity of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for the Dirichlet $L$-functions. Next we study the local properties of the Mertens function, i.e. its variation induced by each Möbius coefficient restricted to the square-free numbers. We perform a massive statistical analysis on these coefficients, applying to them a series of randomness tests of increasing precision and complexity, for a total number of eighteen different tests. The successful outputs of all these tests (each of them with a level of confidence of $99\%$ that all the sub-sequences analyzed are indeed random) can be seen as impressive "experimental" confirmations of the brownian nature of the restricted Möbius coefficients and the probabilistic normal law distribution of the Mertens function analytically established earlier. In view of the theoretical probabilistic argument and the large battery of statistical tests, we can conclude that while a violation of the RH is strictly speaking not impossible, it is however extremely improbable.

Abstract:Let $\zeta^k(s) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty \tau_k(n) n^{-s}, \Re s > 1$. We present three conditional results on the ternary additive correlation sum $$\sum_{n\le X} \tau_3(n) \tau_3(n+h),\quad (h\ge 1),$$ and give numerical verifications of our method. The first is a conditional proof for the full main term of the above correlation sum for any composite shift $1 \le h \le X^{2/3}$, on assuming an averaged level of distribution for the three-fold divisor function $\tau_3(n)$ in arithmetic progressions to level two-thirds. The second is a conditional derivation for the leading order main term asymptotics of this correlation sum, also valid for any composite shift $1 \le h \le X^{2/3}$. The third result gives a complete expansion of the polynomial for the full main term for the special case $h=1$ from both our method and from the delta-method, showing that our answers match. Our method is essentially elementary, especially for the $h=1$ case, uses congruences, and, as alluded to earlier, gives the same answer as in prior prediction of Conrey and Gonek [Duke Math. J. 107 (3) 2002], previously computed by Ng and Thom [Funct. Approx. Comment. Math. 60(1) 2019], and unpublished heuristic probabilistic arguments of Tao. Our procedure is general and works to give the full main term with a power-saving error term for any correlations of the form $\sum_{n\le X} \tau_k(n) f(n+h)$, to any composite shift $h$, and for a wide class of arithmetic function $f(n)$.
