Abstract:This is a review of the basic concepts of the theory of real and complex smooth vector bundles with finite rank. Besides, the concept of a tensor field is studied within the general framework of a smooth vector bundle rather than a smooth manifold.

Abstract:In this short note, we prove that a complex Finsler vector bundle with positive Kobayashi curvature must be ample, which partially solves a problem of S. Kobayashi posed in 1975. As applications, a strongly pseudoconvex complex Finsler manifold with positive Kobayashi curvature must be biholomorphic to the complex projective space; we also show that all Schur polynomials are numerically positive for complex Finsler vector bundles with positive Kobayashi curvature.

Abstract:We show that any continuous $\mathbf{C}$-linear Lie algebra splitting of the symbol map from the Atiyah algebra of a vector bundle on a complex manifold is given by a differential operator of order at most the rank of the bundle plus one. Bundles equipped with such a splitting can be thought of as \emph{infinitesimally equivariant} bundles, and our theorem implies these are, in a certain sense, in a categorical formal neighbourhood of vector bundles with a flat connection.

Abstract:For a compact smooth manifold with corners (or finite CW-complex) $X$, we can prescribe a finite set of spin or spin$^h$ manifolds (possibly with boundary) mapping into it so that every real vector bundle over $X$ is determined, up to stable equivalence, by the Dirac indices of the real vector bundle when pulled-back onto those prescribed spin or spin$^h$ manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper we generalise the theory of real vector bundles to a certain class of non-Hausdorff manifolds. In particular, it is shown that every vector bundle fibred over these non-Hausdorff manifolds can be constructed as a colimit of standard vector bundles. We then use this description to introduce various formulas that express non-Hausdorff structures in terms of data defined on certain Hausdorff submanifolds. Finally, we use Čech cohomology to classify the real non-Hausdorff line bundles.

Stratified Vector Bundles: Examples and Constructions

Abstract:A stratified space is a kind of topological space together with a partition into smooth manifolds. These kinds of spaces naturally arise in the study of singular algebraic varieties, symplectic reduction, and differentiable stacks. In this paper, we introduce a particular class of stratified spaces called stratified vector bundles, and provide an alternate characterization in terms of monoid actions. We will then provide large families of examples coming from the theory of Whitney stratified spaces, singular foliation theory, and equivariant vector bundle theory. Finally, we extend functorial properties of smooth vector bundles to the stratified case.

Abstract:A natural explicit condition is given ensuring that an action of the multiplicative monoid of non-negative reals on a manifold F comes from homotheties of a vector bundle structure on F , or, equivalently, from an Euler vector field. This is used in showing that double (or higher) vector bundles present in the literature can be equivalently defined as manifolds with a family of commuting Euler vector fields. Higher vector bundles can be therefore defined as manifolds admitting certain N n -grading in the structure sheaf. Consequently, multi-graded (super)manifolds are canonically associated with higher vector bundles that is an equivalence of categories. Of particular interest are symplectic multi-graded manifolds which are proven to be associated with cotangent bundles. Duality for higher vector bundles is then explained by means of the cotangent bundles as they contain the collection of all possible duals. This gives, moreover, higher generalizations of the known “universal Legendre transformation” T ∗ E ≃ T ∗ E ∗ , identifying the cotangent bundles of all higher vector bundles in duality. The symplectic multi-graded manifolds, equipped with certain homological Hamiltonian vector fields, lead to an alternative to Roytenberg’s picture generalization of Lie bialgebroids, Courant brackets, Drinfeld doubles and can be viewed as geometrical base for higher BRST and Batalin–Vilkovisky formalisms. This is also a natural framework for studying n -fold Lie algebroids and related structures.

Abstract:Reviews in Mathematical Physics, Ahead of Print. The prescribed rational functions constitute a subset of rational functions satisfying certain symmetry and analyticity conditions. Over a smooth complex curve [math], we construct explicitly a bundle [math] with values in the prescribed rational functions. An intrinsic coordinate-independent formulation (the main result of the paper, Proposition 1) for such bundles is given. The construction presented in this paper is useful for studies of the canonical cosimplicial cohomology of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras on smooth manifolds, as well as for the purposes of conformal field theory and the theory of foliations.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to introduce a construction of a vector bundle on a tropical variety. When the base is a tropical toric variety these tropicalize toric vector bundles, and are described by the data of a valuated matroid and some flats in the lattice of flats of the underlying matroid. The fibers are tropical linear spaces. We define global sections for tropical toric vector bundles, stability, and Jordan-Hölder and Harder-Narasimhan filtrations. Many of these require additional modularity assumptions on the defining matroid.

Discrete Vector Bundles with Connection and the Bianchi Identity

Abstract:We develop a combinatorial theory of vector bundles with connection that is natural with respect to appropriate mappings of the base space. The base space is a simplicial complex, the main objects defined are discrete vector bundle valued cochains and the main operators we develop are a discrete exterior covariant derivative and a combinatorial wedge product. Key properties of these operators are demonstrated and it is shown that they are natural with respect to the mappings referred to above. We also formulate a well-behaved definition of metric compatible discrete connections. A characterization is given for when a discrete vector bundle with connection is trivializable or has a trivial lower rank subbundle. This machinery is used to define discrete curvature as linear maps and we show that our formulation satisfies a discrete Bianchi identity. Recently an alternative framework for discrete vector bundles with connection has been given by Christiansen and Hu. We show that our framework reproduces and extends theirs when we apply our constructions on a subdivision of the base simplicial complex.

Abstract:Given a field of Hilbert spaces there are two ways to endow it with a smooth structure: the standard and geometrical notion of Hilbert (or Hermitian) bundle and the analytical notion of smooth field of Hilbert spaces. We study the relationship between these concepts in a general framework. We apply our results in the following interesting example called Riemannian direct images: Let $M,N$ be Riemannian oriented manifolds, $\rho:M\to N$ be a submersion and $\pi:E\to M$ a finite dimensional vector bundle. Also, let $M_\lambda=\rho^{-1}(\lambda)$ and fix a suitable measure $\mu_\lambda$ in $M_\lambda$. Does the field of Hilbert spaces $\mathcal{H}(\lambda)=L^2(M_\lambda,E)$ admits a smooth field of Hilbert space structure? or a Hilbert bundle structure? In order to provide conditions to guarantee a positive answer for these questions, we develop an interesting formula to derivate functions defined on $N$ as a integral over $M_\lambda$.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a category of short exact sequences of vector bundles and prove that it is equivalent to the category of double vector bundles. Moreover, operations on double vector bundles can be transferred to operations on the corresponding short exact sequences. In particular, we study the duality theory of double vector bundles in term of the corresponding short exact sequences. Examples including the jet bundle and the Atiyah algebroid are discussed.

Abstract:We classify compact Kähler manifolds with semi-positive holomorphic bisectional and big tangent bundles. We also classify compact complex surfaces with semi-positive tangent bundles and compact complex 3-folds of the form ${\mathbb P}(T^*X)$ whose tangent bundles are nef. Moreover, we show that if X is a Fano manifold such that ${\mathbb P}(T^*X)$ has nef tangent bundle, then $X\cong {\mathbb P}^n$.

Abstract:We extend calculus from smooth manifolds to topological manifolds making use of a theory of generalized functions developed for this aim. Actually such extension fits into a boarder context: the universal construction of a site containing all continuous maps between topological spaces and whose arrows are smooth in the generalized sense. As an application we prove the existence of non singular generalized tangent vector fields on spheres of any dimension, showing how this result is coherent with the non existence of smooth vector fields on spheres of even dimension. Many other applications are outlined or suggested, some of which are under development by the author.

Abstract:A sufficient condition,under which a(Z_2)~k-vector bundle over a smooth closed manifold is equivariantly cobordant to zero,is obtained.(Φ,η~n,M~m) denotes the action,the vector bundle and the manifold,respectively. The main result is stated as follows:if(1) all Stiefel-Whitney classes of the tangent bundle to each connected component of the fixed point set F vanish in positive dimension;(2) dim M~m2~k dim F;(3) each p-dimensional part F~p of the fixed point set possesses the linear independence property,then(Φ,η~n,M~m) is equivariantly cobordant to zero.Furthermore,an example is given to show that when dim M~m = 2~k dim F and other two conditions are still satisfied,the vector bundle still may be not equivariantly cobordant to zero.In this case the vector bundle is cobordant to zero if and only if the vector bundle is equivariantly cobordant to zero.

Abstract:This note is propaedeutic to the forthcoming work \cite{sil}; here we develop the terminology and results required by that paper. More specifically we introduce the concept of scalarly essentially integrable locally convex vector-valued tensor fields on a smooth manifold, generalize on them the usual operations, in case the manifold is oriented define the weak integral of scalarly essentially integrable locally convex vector-valued maximal forms and finally establish the extension of Stokes theorem for smooth locally convex vector-valued forms. This approach to the basic theory of scalarly essentially integrable and smooth locally convex vector-valued tensor fields seems to us to be new. Specifically are new (1) the definition of the space of scalarly essentially integrable locally convex vector-valued tensor fields as a $\mathcal{A}(U)$-tensor product, although motivated by a result in the usual smooth and real-valued context; (2) the procedure of $\mathcal{A}(U)$-linearizing $\mathcal{A}(U)$-bilinear maps in order to extend the usual operations especially the wedge product; (3) the exploitation of the uniqueness decomposition of the $\mathcal{A}(U)$-tensor product with a free module in order to define not only (a) the exterior differential of smooth locally convex vector-valued forms, but also (b) the weak integral of scalarly essentially integrable locally convex vector-valued maximal forms; (4) the use of the projective topological tensor product theory to define the wedge product.

Abstract:We consider here the category of diffeological vector pseudo-bundles, and study a possible extension of classical differential geometric tools on finite dimensional vector bundles, namely, the group of automorphisms, the frame bundle, the space of connection 1-forms and the space of covariant derivatives. Substential distinctions are highlighted in this generalized framework, among which the non-isomorphism between connection 1-forms and covariant derivatives. Applications not only include finite dimensional examples with singularities, but also infinite dimensional vector bundles.
