Abstract:Let $f: X \rightarrow C$ be a genus 1 fibration from a smooth projective surface, i.e. its generic fiber is a regular genus 1 curve. Let $j: J \rightarrow C$ be the Jacobian fibration of $f$. In this paper, we prove that the Chow motives of $X$ and $J$ are isomorphic. As an application, combined with our concomitant work on motives of quasi-elliptic fibrations, we prove Kimura finite-dimensionality for smooth projective surfaces not of general type with geometric genus 0. This generalizes Bloch-Kas-Lieberman's result to arbitrary characteristic.

Abstract:The Euler characteristic of all the Chow varieties, of a fixed projective variety, can be collected in a formal power series called the Euler-Chow series. This series coincides with the Hilbert series when the Picard group is a finite generated free abelian group. It is an interesting open problem to find for which varieties this series is rational. A few cases have been computed, and it is suspected that the series is not rational for the blow up of P^2 at nine points in general position. It is very natural to extend this series to Chow motives and ask the question if the series is rational or to find a counterexample. In this short paper we generalized the series and show by an example that the series is not rational. This opens the question of what is the geometrical meaning of the Euler-Chow series.

Abstract:Over qcqs finite-dimensional schemes, we prove that étale motives of geometric origin can be characterised by a constructibility property which is purely categorical, giving a full answer to the question "Do all constructible étale motives come from geometry?" which dates back to Cisinski and Déglise's work. We also show that they afford the continuity property and satisfy h-descent and Milnor excision.

Abstract:We prove that if a smooth projective algebraic variety of dimension less or equal to three has a unit type integral $K$-motive, then its integral Chow motive is of Lefschetz type. As a consequence, the integral Chow motive is of Lefschetz type for a smooth projective variety of dimension less or equal to three that admits a full exceptional collection.

Abstract:Grothendieck–Chow motives of quadric hypersurfaces have provided many insights into the theory of quadratic forms. Subsequently, the landscape of motives of more general projective homogeneous varieties has begun to emerge. Abstract:In this article we formalize and enhance Kontsevich's beautiful insight that Chow motives can be embedded into non-commutative ones after factoring out by the action of the Tate object. We illustrate the potential of this result by developing three of its manyfold applications: (1) the notions of Schur and Kimura finiteness admit an adequate extension to the realm of non-commutative motives; (2) Gillet-Soule's motivic measure admits an extension to the Grothendieck ring of non-commutative motives; (3) certain motivic zeta functions admit an intrinsic construction inside the category of non-commutative motives.

Abstract:Let $S$ and $T$ be smooth projective varieties over an algebraically closed field. Suppose that $S$ is a surface admitting a decomposition of the diagonal. We show that, away from the characteristic of $k$, if an algebraic correspondence $T \to S$ acts trivially on the unramified cohomology, then it acts trivially on any normalized, birational, and motivic functor. This generalizes Kahn's result on the torsion order of $S$. We also exhibit an example of $S$ over $\mathbb{C}$ for which $S \times S$ violates the integral Hodge conjecture.

Motivic Lefschetz theorem for twisted Milnor hypersurfaces

Abstract:We show that the Grothendieck-Chow motive of a smooth hyperplane section $Y$ of an inner twisted form $X$ of a Milnor hypersurface splits as a direct sum of shifted copies of the motive of the Severi-Brauer variety of the associated cyclic algebra $A$ and the motive of its maximal commutative subfield $L\subset A$. The proof is based on the non-triviality of the (monodromy) Galois action on the equivariant Chow group of $Y_L$.

Abstract:We show that the ambiguity of Murre's Chow-Kuenneth projector for degree 1 has certain good properties, assuming only that it factors through a Chow motive of a smooth irreducible curve. This is compatible with a picture obtained by using Beilinson's conjectural mixed motives, and implies for instance the independence of the Chow motive defined by the middle Chow-Kuenneth projector for surfaces.
Higher Chow cycles on K3 surfaces attached to plane quartics

Abstract:In this paper, we give an explicit construction of higher Chow cycles of type $(2,1)$ on $K3$ surfaces obtained as quadruple coverings of the projective plane ramified along smooth quartics. The construction uses a pair of bitangents of the quartics. We prove that the higher Chow cycles generate a rank 2 subgroup in the indecomposable part of the higher Chow group for very general members, by using a specialization argument and an explicit computation of the regulator map.

Abstract:This is a considerably expanded version of the "pure" part of our 2002 preprint. We define a category of pure birational motives over a field, depending on the choice of an adequate equivalence relation on algebraic cycles. It is obtained by "killing" the Lefschetz motive in the corresponding category of effective motives. For rational equivalence, it encompasses Bloch's decomposition of the diagonal. We study the induced Chow-Künneth decompositions in this category, and establish relationships with Rost's cycle modules and the Albanese functor for smooth projective varieties.

Abstract:The Quot scheme of points $\mathrm{Quot}_{d,n}(X)$ on a variety $X$ over a field $k$ parametrizes quotient sheaves of $\mathcal{O}_X^{\oplus d}$ of zero-dimensional support and length $n$. It is a rank-$d$ generalization of the Hilbert scheme of $n$ points. When $X$ is a reduced curve with only the cusp singularity $\{x^2=y^3\}$ and $d\geq 0$ is fixed, the generating series for the motives of $\mathrm{Quot}_{d,n}(X)$ in the Grothendieck ring of varieties is studied via Gröbner bases, and shown to be rational. Moreover, the generating series is computed explicitly when $d\leq 3$. The computational results exhibit surprising patterns (despite the fact that the category of finite length coherent modules over a cusp is wild), which not only enable us to conjecture the exact form of the generating series for all $d$, but also suggest a general functional equation whose $d=1$ case is the classical functional equation of the motivic zeta function known for any Gorenstein curve. As another side of the story, Quot schemes are related to the Cohen--Lenstra series. The Cohen--Lenstra series encodes the count of "commuting matrix points'' (or equivalently, coherent modules of finite length) of a variety over a finite field, about which Huang formuated a "rationality'' conjecture for singular curves. We prove a general formula that expresses the Cohen--Lenstra series in terms of the motives of the (punctual) Quot schemes, which together with our main rationality theorem, provides positive evidence for Huang's conjecture for the cusp.

Abstract:We construct a theory of motivic cohomology for quasi-compact, quasi-separated schemes of equal characteristic, which is related to non-connective algebraic $K$-theory via an Atiyah--Hirzebruch spectral sequence, and to étale cohomology in the range predicted by Beilinson and Lichtenbaum. On smooth varieties over a field our theory recovers classical motivic cohomology, defined for example via Bloch's cycle complex. Our construction uses trace methods and (topological) cyclic homology. As predicted by the behaviour of algebraic $K$-theory, the motivic cohomology is in general sensitive to singularities, including non-reduced structure, and is not $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant. It nevertheless has good geometric properties, satisfying for example the projective bundle formula and pro cdh descent. Further properties of the theory include a Nesterenko--Suslin comparison isomorphism to Milnor $K$-theory, and a vanishing range which simultaneously refines Weibel's conjecture about negative $K$-theory and a vanishing result of Soulé for the Adams eigenspaces of higher algebraic $K$-groups. We also explore the relation of the theory to algebraic cycles, showing in particular that the Levine--Weibel Chow group of zero cycles on a surface arises as a motivic cohomology group.

The Chow ring of the moduli space of degree $2$ quasi-polarized K3 surfaces

Abstract:We study the Chow ring with rational coefficients of the moduli space $\mathcal F_{2}$ of quasi-polarized $K3$ surfaces of degree $2$. We find generators, relations, and calculate the Chow Betti numbers. The highest nonvanishing Chow group is $\mathsf A^{17}(\mathcal F_2)\cong {\mathbb{Q}}$. We prove that the Chow ring consists of tautological classes and is isomorphic to the even cohomology. The Chow ring is not generated by divisors and does not satisfy duality with respect to the pairing into $\mathsf A^{17}(\mathcal F_2)$. The kernel of the pairing is a 1-dimensional subspace of $\mathsf{A}^{9}(\mathcal F_2)$ which we calculate explicitly. In the appendix, we revisit Kirwan-Lee's calculation of the Poincaré polynomial of $\mathcal{F}_2$.

Abstract:We study the Gauss and Jacobi sums from a viewpoint of motives. We exhibit isomorphisms between Chow motives arising from the Artin-Schreier curve and the Fermat varieties over a finite field, that can be regarded as (and yield a new proof of) classically known relations among Gauss and Jacobi sums such as Davenport-Hasse's multiplication formula. As a key step, we define motivic analogues of the Gauss and Jacobi sums as algebraic correspondences, and show that they represent the Frobenius endomorphisms of such motives. This generalizes Coleman's result for curves. These results are applied to investigate the group of invertible Chow motives with coefficients in a cyclotomic field.
