Abstract:The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of Hadamard states for the Maxwell equations on any globally hyperbolic spacetime. This will be achieved by introducing a new gauge fixing condition, the Cauchy radiation gauge, that will allow to suppress all the unphysical degrees of freedom. The key ingredient for achieving this gauge is a new Hodge decomposition for differential k-forms in Sobolev spaces on complete (possibly non-compact) Riemannian manifolds.

Abstract:We quantized the full Einstein equations in a globally hyperbolic spacetime $N=N^{n+1}$, $n\ge 3$, and found solutions of the resulting hyperbolic equation in a fiber bundle $E$ which can be expressed as a product of spatial eigenfunctions (eigendistributions) and temporal eigenfunctions. The spatial eigenfunctions form a basis in an appropriate Hilbert space while the temporal eigenfunctions are solutions to a second order ordinary differential equation in $\mathbb{R}_+$. In case $n\ge 17$ and provided the cosmological constant $\Lambda$ is negative the temporal eigenfunctions are eigenfunctions of a self-adjoint operator $\hat H_0$ such that the eigenvalues are countable and the eigenfunctions form an orthonormal basis of a Hilbert space.

Abstract:We consider semiclassical gravity with a Klein-Gordon field with mass $m^2 \geq 0$ and curvature coupling $\xi = 1/2$. We identify a special class of Hadamard two-point functions for which the semiclassical system is quasi-linear hyperbolic and, within this class, provide the first well-posedness result for semiclassical gravity without spacetime symmetries. These two-point functions yield stress-energy expectation values proportional to the spacetime metric (modulo ambiguities). If the proportionality constant vanishes, one has a quantum version of gravitational `stealth' configurations. We discuss that some of these solutions have regular Cauchy horizons in the light of strong cosmic censorship.

Abstract:The classical black hole spacetime is modified semiclassically, depending strongly on the choice of the quantum states. In particular, for the Boulware state the spacetime often takes a wormhole structure mimicking closely a spacetime with a horizon. In this paper, in the context of the two-dimensional dilaton RST model, we consider all possible important interplays between the Hartle-Hawking, Unruh and Boulware quantum states. Special attention is given to the hybrid states made up of quantum fields either in the Hartle-Hawking or Unruh states, and some non-physical fields (with the wrong sign in the kinetic term in the action) in the Boulware state. We present a detailed analysis of the semiclassical geometry in all these cases paying attention to the presence or absence of horizons, curvature singularities and to the geodesic completeness of the spacetime. In the space of parameters specifying the generic quantum state, we find a wide domain (with dominating non-physical fields) where the semiclassical geometry represents a geodesically complete, asymptotically flat causal diamond, free of horizon or curvature singularity. However, a distant observer still finds Hawking radiation at asymptotic infinity. In the Unruh-Boulware hybrid state solution, we find that the energy flux at asymptotic infinity receives important corrections from its thermal behavior, leading to information recovery as we go from early to late retarded times. As a result, the corresponding entropy shows a typical Page curve bahavior.

On the quantisation of gravity by embedding spacetime in a higher dimensional space

Abstract:Certain difficulties of quantum gravity can be avoided if we embed the spacetime $V_4$ into a higher dimensional space $V_N$; then our spacetime is merely a 4-surface in $V_N$.What remains is conceptually not so difficult: just to quantise this 4-surface. Our formal procedure generalises our version of Stueckelberg's proper time method of worldline quantisation. We write the equations of $V_4$ in the covariant canonical form starting from a model Lagrangian which contains the classical Einstein gravity as a particular case. Then we perform quantisation in the Schrödinger picture by using the concepts of a phase functional and wave functional. As a result we obtain the uncertainty relations which imply that an observer is `aware' either of a particular spacetime surface and has no information about other spacetime surfaces (which represent alternative histories); or conversely, he loses information about a particular $V_4$ whilst he obtains some information about other spacetimes (and histories). Equivalently, one cannot measure to an arbitrary precision both the metric on $V_4$ and matter distribution on various alternative spacetime surfaces. We show how this special case in the `coordinate' representations can be generalised to an arbitrary vector in an abstract Hilbert space.

Abstract:Coherent or semiclassical states in canonical quantum gravity describe the classical Schwarzschild space-time. By tracing over the coherent state wavefunction inside the horizon, a density matrix is derived. Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is obtained from the density matrix, modulo the Immirzi parameter. The expectation value of the area and curvature operator is evaluated in these states. The behaviour near the singularity of the curvature operator shows that the singularity is resolved. We then generalise the results to space-times with spherically symmetric apparent horizons.

The Hadamard condition on a Cauchy surface and the renormalized stress-energy tensor

Abstract:Given a Cauchy surface in a curved spacetime and a suitably defined quantum state on the CCR algebra of the Klein Gordon quantum field on that surface, we show, by expanding the squared spacetime geodesic distance and the '$U$' and '$V$' Hadamard coefficients (and suitable derivatives thereof) in sufficiently accurate covariant Taylor expansions on the surface that the renormalized expectation value of the quantum stress-energy tensor on the surface is determined by the geometry of the surface and the first 4 time derivatives of the metric off the surface, in addition to the Cauchy data for the field's two-point function. This result has been anticipated in and is motivated by a previous investigation by the authors on the initial value problem in semiclassical gravity, for which the geometric initial data corresponds {\it a priori} to the metric on the surface and up to 3 time derivatives off the surface, but where it was argued that the fourth derivative can be obtained with aid of the field equations on the initial surface.

IR-fixed Euclidean vacuum for linearized gravity on de Sitter space

Abstract:We consider the Euclidean vacuum for linearized gravity on the global de Sitter space, obtained from the Euclidean Green's function on the 4-sphere. We use the notion of Calderón projectors to recover a quantum state for the Lorentzian theory on de Sitter space. We show that while the state is gauge invariant and Hadamard, it is not positive on the whole of the phase space. We show however that a suitable modification at low energies yields a well-defined Hadamard state on global de Sitter space.

Using the background field method, we utilize a non-singular gauge to compute the anomalous dimension of the cosmological constant at one loop, in a normalization adapted to the spatial curvature term.

Abstract:We provide a deformation quantization, in the sense of Rieffel, for \textit{all} globally hyperbolic spacetimes with a Poisson structure. The Poisson structures have to satisfy Fedosov type requirements in order for the deformed product to be associative. We apply the novel deformation to quantum field theories and their respective states and we prove that the deformed state (i.e.\ a state in non-commutative spacetime) has a singularity structure resembling Minkowski, i.e.\ is \textit{Hadamard}, if the undeformed state is Hadamard. This proves that the Hadamard condition, and hence the quantum field theoretical implementation of the equivalence principle is a general concept that holds in spacetimes with quantum features (i.e. a non-commutative spacetime).

Abstract:Motivated by the quantization of linearized gravity, we consider gauge-fixed linearized Einstein equations and their Wick rotation near a Cauchy surface. We show that Calderón projectors for the Wick-rotated equations induce Hadamard bi-solutions on the Lorentzian level. On the other hand, we find smoothing obstructions to gauge-invariance and positivity conditions needed in quantization. These obstructions are primarily due to boundary terms arising in the Wick-rotated theory and depend on the boundary conditions.

Renormalisation in maximally symmetric spaces and semiclassical gravity in Anti-de Sitter spacetime

Abstract:We obtain semiclassical gravity solutions in the Poincaré fundamental domain of $(3+1)$-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime, PAdS$_4$, with a (massive or massless) Klein-Gordon field (with possibly non-trivial curvature coupling) with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary. Some results are explicitly and graphically presented for special values of the mass and curvature coupling (e.g. minimal or conformal coupling). In order to achieve this, we study in some generality how to perform the Hadamard renormalisation procedure for non-linear observables in maximally symmetric spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions, with emphasis on the stress-energy tensor. We show that, in this maximally symmetric setting, the Hadamard bi-distribution is invariant under the isometries of the spacetime, and can be seen as a `single-argument' distribution depending only on the geodesic distance, which significantly simplifies the Hadamard recursion relations and renormalisation computations.

Consistent Canonical Quantization of Gravity: Recovery of Classical GR from BRST-invariant Coherent States

Abstract:We perform canonical quantization of General Relativity, as an effective quantum field theory below the Planck scale, within the BRST-invariant framework. We show that the promotion of constraints to dynamical equations of motion for auxiliary fields leads to the healthy Hamiltonian flow. In particular, we show that the classical properties of Einstein's gravity, such as vanishing Hamiltonian modulo boundary contribution, is realized merely as an expectation value in appropriate physical states. Most importantly, the physicality is shown not to entail trivial time-evolution for correlation functions. In the present approach we quantize the theory once and for all around the Minkowaski vacuum and treat other would-be classical backgrounds as BRST-invariant coherent states. This is especially important for cosmological spacetimes as it uncovers features that are not visible in ordinary semi-classical treatment. The Poincaré invariance of the vacuum, essential for our quantization, provides strong motivation for spontaneously-broken supersymmetry.

Quantization of causal diamonds in (2+1)-dimensional gravity -- Part I: Classical reduction

Abstract:We develop the non-perturbative reduced phase space quantization of causal diamonds in (2+1)-dimensional gravity with a nonpositive cosmological constant. In this Part I we focus on the classical reduction process, and the description of the reduced phase space, while in Part II we discuss the quantization of the phase space and quantum aspects of the causal diamonds. The system is defined as the domain of dependence of a spacelike topological disk with fixed boundary metric. By solving the constraints in a constant-mean-curvature time gauge and removing all the spatial gauge redundancy, we find that the phase space is the cotangent bundle of Diff^+(S^1)/PSL(2,R), i.e., the group of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle modulo the projective special linear subgroup. Classically, the states correspond to causal diamonds embedded in AdS_3 (or Mink_3 if $\Lambda = 0$), with fixed corner length, and whose Cauchy surfaces have the topology of a disc.

A Note On The Canonical Formalism for Gravity

Abstract:We describe a simple gauge-fixing that leads to a construction of a quantum Hilbert space for quantum gravity in an asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetime, valid to all orders of perturbation theory. The construction is motivated by a relationship of the phase space of gravity in asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetime to a cotangent bundle. We describe what is known about this relationship and some extensions that might plausibly be true. A key fact is that, under certain conditions, the Einstein Hamiltonian constraint equation can be viewed as a way to gauge fix the group of conformal rescalings of the metric of a Cauchy hypersurface. An analog of the procedure that we follow for Anti de Sitter gravity leads to standard results for a Klein-Gordon particle.

Quantum Geometrodynamics Revived II. Hilbert Space of Positive Definite Metrics

Abstract:This paper represents the second in a series of works aimed at reinvigorating the quantum geometrodynamics program. Our approach introduces a lattice regularization of the hypersurface deformation algebra, such that each lattice site carries a set of canonical variables given by the components of the spatial metric and the corresponding conjugate momenta. In order to quantize this theory, we describe a representation of the canonical commutation relations that enforces the positivity of the operators $\hat q_{ab} s^a s^b$ for all choices of $s$. Moreover, symmetry of $\hat q_{ab}$ and $\hat p^{ab}$ is ensured. This reflects the physical requirement that the spatial metric should be a positive definite, symmetric tensor. To achieve this end, we resort to the Cholesky decomposition of the spatial metric into upper triangular matrices with positive diagonal entries. Moreover, our Hilbert space also carries a representation of the vielbein fields and naturally separates the physical and gauge degrees of freedom. Finally, we introduce a generalization of the Weyl quantization for our representation. We want to emphasize that our proposed methodology is amenable to applications in other fields of physics, particularly in scenarios where the configuration space is restricted by complicated relationships among the degrees of freedom.

Abstract:In the analysis of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, we have simplified the Hamiltonian constraint of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation using the coordinate transformation. The coordinate is choose such that metric becomes diagonal and as Gaussian normal coordinate. Or we treat small universe so that the metric become diagonal and universe is covered by Gaussian normal coordinates. We have solved the Wheeler-DeWitt equation of such universes. Such that universe contains Biancki I type universe or the black hole universe.

Abstract:We develop the non-perturbative reduced phase space quantization of causal diamonds in (2+1)-dimensional gravity with a nonpositive cosmological constant. In Part I we described the classical reduction process and the reduced phase space, $\widetilde{\mathcal P} = T^*(\text{Diff}^+\!(S^1)/\text{PSL}(2, \mathbb R))$, while in Part II we discuss the quantization of the phase space and quantum aspects of the causal diamonds. Because the phase space does not have a natural linear structure, a generalization of the standard canonical (coordinate) quantization is required. In particular, as the configuration space is a homogeneous space for the $\text{Diff}^+\!(S^1)$ group, we apply Isham's group-theoretic quantization scheme. We propose a quantization based on (projective) unitary irreducible representations of the $\text{BMS}_3$ group, which is obtained from a natural prescription for extending $\text{Diff}^+\!(S^1)$ into a transitive group of symplectic symmetries of the phase space. We find a class of suitable quantum theories labelled by a choice of a coadjoint orbit of the Virasoro group and an irreducible unitary representation of the corresponding little group. The most natural choice, justified by a Casimir matching principle, corresponds to a Hilbert space realized by wavefunctions on $\text{Diff}^+\!(S^1)/\text{PSL}(2, \mathbb R)$ valued in some unitary irreducible representation of $\text{SL}(2, \mathbb R)$. A surprising result is that the twist of the diamond corner loop is quantized in terms of the ratio of the Planck length to the corner perimeter.
