Abstract:For every positive integer $d$, we show that there must exist an absolute constant $c > 0$ such that the following holds: for any integer $n \geq cd^{7}$ and any red-blue coloring of the one-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$, there must exist either a $d$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored red or a $2$-dimensional subspace for which all of its one-dimensional subspaces get colored blue. This answers recent questions of Nelson and Nomoto, and confirms that for any even plane binary matroid $N$, the class of $N$-free, claw-free binary matroids is polynomially $\chi$-bounded. Our argument will proceed via a reduction to a well-studied additive combinatorics problem, originally posed by Green: given a set $A \subset \mathbb{F}_{2}^{n}$ with density $\alpha \in [0,1]$, what is the largest subspace that we can find in $A+A$? Our main contribution to the story is a new result for this problem in the regime where $1/\alpha$ is large with respect to $n$, which utilizes ideas from the recent breakthrough paper of Kelley and Meka on sets of integers without three-term arithmetic progressions.

On Ramsey degrees, compactness and approximability

Abstract:One of the consequences of the Compactness Principle in structural Ramsey theory is that the small Ramsey degrees cannot exceed the corresponding big Ramsey degrees, thereby justifying the choice of adjectives. However, it is unclear what happens in the realm of dual Ramsey degrees due to the lack of the compactness argument that applies to that setting. In this paper we present a framework within which both "direct" and dual Ramsey statements can be stated and reasoned about in a uniform fashion. We introduce the notion of approximability which yields a general compactness argument powerful enough to prove statements about both "direct" and dual Ramsey phenomena. We conclude the paper with an application of the new strategies by generalizing Voigt's $\star$-version of the Infinite Ramsey Theorem to a large class of relational structures and deriving a Ramsey statement for "loose colorings" of enumerated Fra\"ıssé limits.

Abstract:We characterize the strength, in terms of Weihrauch degrees, of certain problems related to Ramsey-like theorems concerning colourings of the rationals and of the natural numbers. The theorems we are chiefly interested in assert the existence of almost-homogeneous sets for colourings of pairs of rationals respectively natural numbers satisfying properties determined by some additional algebraic structure on the set of colours. In the context of reverse mathematics, most of the principles we study are equivalent to $\Sigma^0_2$-induction over $\mathrm{RCA}_0$. The associated problems in the Weihrauch lattice are related to $\mathrm{TC}_\mathbb{N}^*$, $(\mathrm{LPO}')^*$ or their product, depending on their precise formalizations.

A Ramsey theorem for the reals

Abstract:We prove that for every colouring of pairs of reals with finitely-many colours, there is a set homeomorphic to the rationals which takes no more than two colours. This was conjectured by Galvin in 1970, and a colouring of Sierpi{ń}ski from 1933 witnesses that the number of colours cannot be reduced to one. Previously in 1985 Shelah had shown that a stronger statement is consistent with a forcing construction assuming the existence of large cardinals. Then in 2018 Raghavan and Todorčević had proved it assuming the existence of large cardinals. We prove it in $ZFC$. In fact Raghavan and Todorčević proved, assuming more large cardinals, a similar result for a large class of topological spaces. We prove this also, again in $ZFC$.

Induced Ramsey problems for trees and graphs with bounded treewidth

Abstract:The induced $q$-color size-Ramsey number $\hat{r}_{\text{ind}}(H;q)$ of a graph $H$ is the minimal number of edges a host graph $G$ can have so that every $q$-edge-coloring of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$ which is an induced subgraph of $G$. A natural question, which in the non-induced case has a very long history, asks which families of graphs $H$ have induced Ramsey numbers that are linear in $|H|$. We prove that for every $k,w,q$, if $H$ is an $n$-vertex graph with maximum degree $k$ and treewidth at most $w$, then $\hat{r}_{\text{ind}}(H;q) = O_{k,w,q}(n)$. This extends several old and recent results in Ramsey theory. Our proof is quite simple and relies upon a novel reduction argument.

Abstract:Inspired by Ramsey's theorem for pairs, Rival and Sands proved what we refer to as an inside/outside Ramsey theorem: every infinite graph $G$ contains an infinite subset $H$ such that every vertex of $G$ is adjacent to precisely none, one, or infinitely many vertices of $H$. We analyze the Rival-Sands theorem from the perspective of reverse mathematics and the Weihrauch degrees. In reverse mathematics, we find that the Rival-Sands theorem is equivalent to arithmetical comprehension and hence is stronger than Ramsey's theorem for pairs. We also identify a weak form of the Rival-Sands theorem that is equivalent to Ramsey's theorem for pairs. We turn to the Weihrauch degrees to give a finer analysis of the Rival-Sands theorem's computational strength. We find that the Rival-Sands theorem is Weihrauch equivalent to the double jump of weak König's lemma. We believe that the Rival-Sands theorem is the first natural theorem shown to exhibit exactly this strength. Furthermore, by combining our result with a result of Brattka and Rakotoniaina, we obtain that solving one instance of the Rival-Sands theorem exactly corresponds to simultaneously solving countably many instances of Ramsey's theorem for pairs. Finally, we show that the uniform computational strength of the weak Rival-Sands theorem is weaker than that of Ramsey's theorem for pairs by showing that a number of well-known consequences of Ramsey's theorem for pairs do not Weihrauch reduce to the weak Rival-Sands theorem. We also address an apparent gap in the literature concerning the relationship between Weihrauch degrees corresponding to the ascending/descending sequence principle and the infinite pigeonhole principle.

Abstract:In this expository note we present simple proofs of the lower bound of Ramsey numbers (Erdös theorem), and of the estimation of discrepancy. Neither statements nor proofs require any knowledge beyond high-school curriculum (except a minor detail). Thus they are accessible to non-specialists, in particular, to students. Our exposition is simpler than the standard exposition because no probabilistic language is used. In order to prove the existence of a `good' object we prove that the number of `bad' objects is smaller than the number of all objects.

Abstract:Oscillation stability is an important concept in Banach space theory which happens to be closely connected to discrete Ramsey theory. For example, Gowers proved oscillation stability for the Banach space $c_0$ using his now famous Ramsey theorem for $\mathrm{FIN}_k$ as the key ingredient. We develop the theory behind this connection and introduce the notion of compact big Ramsey degrees, extending the theory of (discrete) big Ramsey degrees. We then prove existence of compact big Ramsey degrees for the Banach space $\ell_\infty$ and the Urysohn sphere, with an explicit characterization in the case of $\ell_\infty$.

Abstract:Ramsey Theorem [6] for pairs is intuitionistically but not classically provable: it is equivalent to a subclassical principle [2]. In this note we show that Ramsey may be restated in an intuitionistically provable form, which is informative (or at least without negations), and classically equivalent to the original. Exponential Schur and Hindman Theorem in Ramsey Theory

Abstract:Answering a conjecture of A. Sisto, J. Sahasrabudhe proved the exponential version of the Schur theorem: for every finite coloring of the naturals, there exists a monochromatic copy of $\{x,y,x^y:x\neq y\},$ which initiates the study of exponential Ramsey theory in arithmetic combinatorics. In this article, We first give two short proofs of the exponential Schur theorem, one using Zorn's lemma and another using $IP_r^\star$ van der Waerden's theorem. Then using the polynomial van der Waerden theorem iteratively we give a proof of the exponential Hindman theorem. Then applying our results we prove for every natural number $m,n$ the equation $x_n^{x_{n-1}^{\cdot^{\cdot^{\cdot^{x_1}}}}}=y_1\cdots y_m$ is partition regular, which can be considered as the exponential version of a more general version of the P. Csikvári, K. Gyarmati, and A. Sárközy conjecture, which was solved by V. Bergelson and N. Hindman independently. As a consequence of our results, we also prove that for every finite partition of $\mathbb{N},$ there exists two different sequences $\langle x_n\rangle_n$ and $\langle y_n\rangle_n$ such that both the multiplicative and exponential version of Hindman theorem generated by these sequences resp. are monochromatic, whereas in the counterpart in the finitary case, J. Sahasrabudhe proved that both sequences are the same. Our result can be considered as an exponential analog to the result of V. Bergelson and N. Hindman. We also prove that a large class of ultrafilters with certain properties do not exist, which could give us direct proof of the exponential Schur theorem. This result can be thought of as partial evidence of the nonexistence of Galvin-Glazer's proof of the exponential Hindman theorem.

A unified approach to Hindman, Ramsey and van der Waerden spaces

Abstract:For many years, there have been conducting research (e.g. by Bergelson, Furstenberg, Kojman, Kubiś, Shelah, Szeptycki, Weiss) into sequentially compact spaces that are, in a sense, topological counterparts of some combinatorial theorems, for instance Ramsey's theorem for coloring graphs, Hindman's finite sums theorem and van der Waerden's arithmetical progressions theorem. These spaces are defined with the aid of different kinds of convergences: IP-convergence, R-convergence and ordinary convergence. The first aim of this paper is to present a unified approach to these various types of convergences and spaces. Then, using this unified approach, we prove some general theorems about existence of the considered spaces and show that all results obtained so far in this subject can be derived from our theorems. The second aim of this paper is to obtain new results about the specific types of these spaces. For instance, we construct a Hausdorff Hindman space that is not an $\I_{1/n}$-space and a Hausdorff differentially compact space that is not Hindman. Moreover, we compare Ramsey spaces with other types of spaces. For instance, we construct a Ramsey space that is not Hindman and a Hindman space that is not Ramsey. The last aim of this paper is to provide a characterization that shows when there exists a space of one considered type that is not of the other kind. This characterization is expressed in purely combinatorial manner with the aid of the so-called Katětov order that has been extensively examined for many years so far. This paper may interest the general audience of mathematicians as the results we obtain are on the intersection of topology, combinatorics, set theory and number theory.

Abstract:Topological Ramsey theory studies a class of combinatorial topological spaces, called topological Ramsey spaces, unifying the essential features of those combinatorial frames where the Ramsey property is equivalent to Baire property. In this article, we expose a general overview of the combinatorial structure of topological Ramsey spaces and their main properties, and we propose an alternative proof of abstract Ellentuck theorem for a large family of topological Ramsey spaces. Additionally, we present the notion of selective topological Ramsey space, and generalize Kastanas games in order to characterize the Baire property for the family of selective topological Ramsey spaces.

Abstract:We discuss the externally definable Ramsey property, a weakening of the Ramsey property for ultrahomogeneous structures, where the only colourings considered are those that are externally definable: that is, definable with parameters in an elementary extension. We show a number of basic results analogous to the classical Ramsey theory, and show that, for an ultrahomogeneous structure M, the externally definable Ramsey property is equivalent to the dynamical statement that, for each natural number n, every subflow of the space of n-types with parameters in M has a fixed point. We discuss a range of examples, including results regarding the lexicographic product of structures.

Optimizing the CGMS upper bound on Ramsey numbers

Abstract:In a recent breakthrough Campos, Griffiths, Morris and Sahasrabudhe obtained the first exponential improvement of the upper bound on the diagonal Ramsey numbers since 1935. We shorten their proof, replacing the underlying book algorithm with a simple inductive statement. This modification allows us - to give a very short proof of an improved upper bound on the off-diagonal Ramsey numbers, which extends to the multicolor setting, and - to clarify the dependence of the bounds on underlying parameters and optimize these parameters, obtaining, in particular, an upper bound $$R(k,k) \leq (3.8)^{k+o(k)}$$ on the diagonal Ramsey numbers.

Abstract:An online Ramsey game is a game between Builder and Painter, alternating in turns. They are given a graph $H$ and a graph $G$ of an infinite set of independent vertices. In each round Builder draws an edge and Painter colors it either red or blue. Builder wins if after some finite round there is a monochromatic copy of the graph $H$, otherwise Painter wins. The online Ramsey number $\widetilde{r}(H)$ is the minimum number of rounds such that Builder can force a monochromatic copy of $H$ in $G$. This is an analogy to the size-Ramsey number $\overline{r}(H)$ defined as the minimum number such that there exists graph $G$ with $\overline{r}(H)$ edges where for any edge two-coloring $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. In this paper, we introduce the concept of induced online Ramsey numbers: the induced online Ramsey number $\widetilde{r}_{ind}(H)$ is the minimum number of rounds Builder can force an induced monochromatic copy of $H$ in $G$. We prove asymptotically tight bounds on the induced online Ramsey numbers of paths, cycles and two families of trees. Moreover, we provide a result analogous to Conlon [On-line Ramsey Numbers, SIAM J. Discr. Math. 2009], showing that there is an infinite family of trees $T_1,T_2,\dots$, $|T_i|<|T_{i+1}|$ for $i\ge1$, such that \[ \lim_{i\to\infty} \frac{\widetilde{r}(T_i)}{\overline{r}(T_i)} = 0. \]

Abstract:The well-known Galvin-Prikry Theorem states that Borel subsets of the Baire space are Ramsey: Given any Borel subset $\mathcal{X}\subseteq [\omega]^{\omega}$, where $[\omega]^{\omega}$ is endowed with the metric topology, each infinite subset $X\subseteq \omega$ contains an infinite subset $Y\subseteq X$ such that $[Y]^{\omega}$ is either contained in $\mathcal{X}$ or disjoint from $\mathcal{X}$. Kechris, Pestov, and Todorcevic point out in their seminal 2005 paper the dearth of similar results for homogeneous structures. Such results are a necessary step to the larger goal of finding a correspondence between structures with infinite dimensional Ramsey properties and topological dynamics, extending their correspondence between the Ramsey property and extreme amenability. In this article, we prove an analogue of the Galvin-Prikry theorem for the Rado graph. Any such infinite dimensional Ramsey theorem is subject to constraints following from the 2006 work of Laflamme, Sauer, and Vuksanovic. The proof uses techniques developed for the author's work on the Ramsey theory of the Henson graphs as well as some new methods for fusion sequences, used to bypass the lack of a certain amalgamation property enjoyed by the Baire space.

Weak A2 spaces, the Kastanas game and strategically Ramsey sets

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a weak A2 space (or wA2-space), which generalises spaces satisfying Todorčević's axioms A1-A4 and countable vector spaces. We show that in any Polish weak A2 space, analytic sets are Kastanas Ramsey, and discuss the relationship between Kastanas Ramsey sets and sets in the projective hierarchy. We also show that in all spaces satisfying A1-A4, every subset of $\cal{R}$ is Kastanas Ramsey iff Ramsey, generalising the recent result by Cano and Di Prisco. Finally, we show that in the setting of Gowers wA2-spaces, Kastanas Ramsey sets and strategically Ramsey sets coincide, providing a connection between the recent studies on topological Ramsey spaces and countable vector spaces.
