Abstract:Determining the exact number of primes at large magnitudes is computationally intensive, making approximation methods (e.g., the logarithmic integral, prime number theorem, Riemann zeta function, Chebyshev's estimates, etc.) particularly valuable. These methods also offer avenues for number-theoretic exploration through analytical manipulation. In this work, we introduce a novel approximation function, φ(n), which adds to the existing repertoire of approximation methods and provides a fresh perspective for number-theoretic studies. Deeper analytical investigation of φ(n) reveals modified representations of the Chebyshev function, prime number theorem, and Riemann zeta function. Computational studies indicate that the difference between φ(n) and the logarithmic integral at magnitudes greater than 10100 is less than 1%.

Abstract:We apply the Inclusion-Exclusion Principle to a unique pair of prime number subsequences to determine whether these subsequences form a small set or a large set and thus whether the infinite sum of the inverse of their terms converges or diverges. In this paper, we analyze the complementary prime number subsequences P(prime) and P(double-prime) as well as revisit the twin prime subsequence P2.

Abstract:For $x>0$, let $\pi (x)$ denote the number of primes not exceeding x. For integers a and $m>0$, we determine when there is an integer $n>1$ with $\pi (n)=(n+a)/m$. In particular, we show that, for any integers $m>2$ and $a\leqslant \lceil e^{m-1}/(m-1)\rceil $, there is an integer $n>1$ with $\pi (n)=(n+a)/m$. Consequently, for any integer $m>4$, there is a positive integer n with $\pi (mn)=m+n$. We also pose several conjectures for further research; for example, we conjecture that, for each $m=1,2,3,\ldots $, there is a positive integer n such that $m+n$ divides $p_m+p_n$, where $p_k$ denotes the k-th prime.

Abstract:We consider the problem of counting the copies of a length-$k$ pattern $\sigma$ in a sequence $f \colon [n] \to \mathbb{R}$, where a copy is a subset of indices $i_1 < \ldots < i_k \in [n]$ such that $f(i_j) < f(i_\ell)$ if and only if $\sigma(j) < \sigma(\ell)$. This problem is motivated by a range of connections and applications in ranking, nonparametric statistics, combinatorics, and fine-grained complexity, especially when $k$ is a small fixed constant. Recent advances have significantly improved our understanding of counting and detecting patterns. Guillemot and Marx [2014] demonstrated that the detection variant is solvable in $O(n)$ time for any fixed $k$. Their proof has laid the foundations for the discovery of the twin-width, a concept that has notably advanced parameterized complexity in recent years. Counting, in contrast, is harder: it has a conditional lower bound of $n^{\Omega(k / \log k)}$ [Berendsohn, Kozma, and Marx 2019] and is expected to be polynomially harder than detection as early as $k = 4$, given its equivalence to counting $4$-cycles in graphs [Dudek and Gawrychowski, 2020]. In this work, we design a deterministic near-linear time $(1+\varepsilon)$-approximation algorithm for counting $\sigma$-copies in $f$ for all $k \leq 5$. Combined with the conditional lower bound for $k=4$, this establishes the first known separation between approximate and exact algorithms for pattern counting. Interestingly, our algorithm leverages the Birgé decomposition -- a sublinear tool for monotone distributions widely used in distribution testing -- which, to our knowledge, has not been applied in a pattern counting context before.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of functions defined recursively on the set of natural numbers in terms of the greatest common divisor algorithm of two numbers and requiring a minimality condition. These functions are permutations, products of infinitely many cycles that depend on certain breaks in the natural numbers involving the primes, and some special products of primes with a density of approximately $29.4\%$. We show that these functions split into only two equivalence classes (modulo the natural equivalence relation of eventually identical maps): one is the class of the identity map and the other is generated by a map whose discrete derivative is almost periodic with ``periods" the primorial numbers.

Abstract:We present a new random approximation method that yields the existence of a discrete Beurling prime system $\mathcal{P}=\{p_{1}, p_{2}, \dotso\}$ which is very close in a certain precise sense to a given non-decreasing, right-continuous, nonnegative, and unbounded function $F$. This discretization procedure improves an earlier discrete random approximation method due to H. Diamond, H. Montgomery, and U. Vorhauer [Math. Ann. 334 (2006), 1-36], and refined by W.-B. Zhang [Math. Ann. 337 (2007), 671-704]. We obtain several applications. Our new method is applied to a question posed by M. Balazard concerning Dirichlet series with a unique zero in their half plane of convergence, to construct examples of very well-behaved generalized number systems that solve a recent open question raised by T. Hilberdink and A. Neamah in [Int. J. Number Theory 16 05 (2020), 1005-1011], and to improve the main result from [Adv. Math. 370 (2020), Article 107240], where a Beurling prime system with regular primes but extremely irregular integers was constructed.

Instead of averaging the expected error term over all residue classes to modules in a given range, here we only consider subsets of arithmetic progressions that satisfy additional congruence conditions and provide asymptotic approximations.

Abstract:In a recent joint work with D.A. Goldston and C.Y. Yildirim we just missed by a hairbreadth a proof that bounded gaps between primes occur infinitely often. In the present work it is shown that adding to the primes a much thinner set, called almost prime powers, the union of the set of primes and almost prime powers contains already infinitely many bounded gaps. More precisely it is shown that if we add to the set of primes either almost prime squares having exactly two, nearly equal prime factors or if we add to the set of primes almost prime cubes having exactly three, nearly equal prime factors, then the resulting set contains already infinitely many bounded gaps.

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ is the greatest integer not belonging to the set $\big\{ \sum_{i=1}^na_ix_i\ |x_i\in \mathbb{N}\big\}$. The general Frobenius problem includes the determination of $g(A)$ and the related Sylvester number $n(A)$ and Sylvester sum $s(A)$. We present a new approach to the Frobenius problem. Basically, we transform the problem into an easier optimization problem. If the new problem can be solved explicitly, then we will be able to obtain a formula of $g(A)$. We illustrate the idea by giving concise proof of some existing formulas and finding some interesting new formulas of $g(A), n(A), s(A)$. Moreover, we find that MacMahon's partition analysis applies to give a new way of calculating $n(A), s(A)$ by using a rational function representation of a polynomial determined by $A$.

Abstract:This paper was written, apart from one technical correction, in July and August of 2013. The, then very recent, breakthrough of Y. Zhang [18] had revived in us an intention to produce a second edition of our book “Opera de Cribro”, one which would include an account of Zhang’s result, stressing the sieve aspects of the method. A complete and connected version of the proof, in our style but not intended for journal publication, seemed a natural first step in this project.Following the further spectacular advance given by J. Maynard (arXiv:1311. 4600, Nov 20, 2013), we have had to re-think our position. Maynard’s method, at least in its current form, proceeds from GPY in quite a different direction than does Zhang’s, and achieves numerically superior results. Consequently, although Zhang’s contribution to the distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions certainly retains its importance, the fact remains that much of the material in this paper would no longer appear in a new edition of our book. Because this paper contains some innovations that we do not wish to become lost, we have decided to make the work publicly available in its original format. We are extremely pleased to be able to include it in the current volume, commemorating the one hundred and twenty-fifth anninversary of the birth of Srinivasa Ramanujan.

MacMahonesque partition functions detect sets related to primes

Abstract:Recent work by Craig, van Ittersum, and Ono constructs explicit expressions in the partition functions of MacMahon that detect the prime numbers. Furthermore, they define generalizations, the MacMahonesque functions, and prove there are infinitely many such expressions in these functions. Here, we show how to modify and adapt their construction to detect cubes of primes as well as primes in arithmetic progressions.

Abstract:James Maynard has taken the analytic number theory world by storm in the last decade, proving several important and surprising theorems, resolving questions that had seemed far out of reach. He is perhaps best known for his work on small and large gaps between primes (which were discussed, hot off the press, in my 2015 CEB lecture). In this article we will discuss two other Maynard breakthroughs: -- Mersenne numbers take the form $2^n-1$ and so appear as $111\dots 111$ in base 2, having no digit `$0$'. It is a famous conjecture that there are infinitely many such primes. More generally it was, until Maynard's work, an open question as to whether there are infinitely many primes that miss any given digit, in any given base. We will discuss Maynard's beautiful ideas that went into partly resolving this question. -- In 1926, Khinchin gave remarkable conditions for when real numbers can usually be ``well approximated'' by infinitely many rationals. However Khinchin's theorem regarded 1/2, 2/4, 3/6 as distinct rationals and so could not be easily modified to cope, say, with approximations by fractions with prime denominators. In 1941 Duffin and Schaefer proposed an appropriate but significantly more general analogy involving approximation only by reduced fractions (which is much more useful). We will discuss its recent resolution by Maynard together with Dimitris Koukoulopoulos.
