Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of functions defined recursively on the set of natural numbers in terms of the greatest common divisor algorithm of two numbers and requiring a minimality condition. These functions are permutations, products of infinitely many cycles that depend on certain breaks in the natural numbers involving the primes, and some special products of primes with a density of approximately $29.4\%$. We show that these functions split into only two equivalence classes (modulo the natural equivalence relation of eventually identical maps): one is the class of the identity map and the other is generated by a map whose discrete derivative is almost periodic with ``periods" the primorial numbers.

Abstract:Let $\omega(n)$ denote the number of distinct prime factors of $n$. Assuming a suitably uniform version of the prime $k$-tuples conjecture, we show that the number \begin{align*} \sum_{n=1}^\infty \frac{\omega(n)}{2^n} \end{align*} is irrational. This settles (conditionally) a question of Erdős.

Abstract:The prime-counting function $\pi(x)$ which returns the number of primes smaller or equal to a given number is a topic of interest in number theory. An algorithm based on a cyclic group isomorphic to $Z/nZ$, the so-called $Z$-functions, was proposed in view to outperform its pieers. The approach suggests a time complexity $\mathcal{O}(x^{1/2})$ in agreement with optimality of a 2-D squared adaptive-recursive algorithm. The present work is a presentation of various approaches as ascending factorization, the main sequence of odd numbers and partial sequences, T-series, counting function of prime composites, $Z$-modular forms and combinatorial aspects.

Prime Factorization of Meanders

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a prime factorization of open meanders, articulated through the framework of 2-colored operads. We demonstrate that each open meander can be canonically constructed from building blocks of two types: iterated snakes and irreducible meanders. We find out that iterated snakes allow efficient enumeration, and thus the problem of enumerating meanders reduces to the problem of enumerating irreducible meanders. Additionally, we present some results concerning the asymptotic of meanders of both classes.

Infinite Primes From Integer Partitions

Abstract:Ferrers diagrams are used to visually represent integer partitions. We describe a way to use Ferrers diagrams to uniquely represent integers in terms of their prime factors. This leads to a lower bound on the number of primes less than a given integer, namely $\pi(x) \geq \frac{\lfloor \lg x \rfloor}{\lg (\lfloor \lg x \rfloor + 1)}$ where $\pi(x)$ is the prime counting function and $\lg(x)$ denotes the base 2 logarithm. This results in a new proof of the infinitude of primes.

With replica exchange Monte Carlo simulation, the behavior which is seemed to indicate exponential computational hardness is observed. But this formulation is expected to give a new insight into the computational complexity of this problem from a statistical mechanical point of view.

Abstract:We have presented a multivariate polynomial function termed as factor elimination function,by which, we can generate prime numbers. This function's mapping behavior can explain the irregularities in the occurrence of prime numbers on the number line. Generally the different categories of prime numbers found till date, satisfy the form of this function. We present some absolute and probabilistic conditions for the primality of the number generated by this method. This function is capable of leading to highly efficient algorithms for generating prime numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that each non-degenerate Lucas sequence contains only finitely many terms which can be written as products of double factorials or as sums or differences of double factorials. In particular, we find all the solutions to the products of double factorials which are sums or differences of two Fibonacci numbers, and Fibonacci numbers which are sums or differences of two double factorials.

Abstract:In this paper, it is proved that every sufficiently large even integer can be represented as the sum of two squares of primes, two cubes of primes, two biquadrates of primes and 16 powers of 2. Furthermore, there are at least 5.313% odd integers that can be represented as one square of prime, one cube of prime and one biquadrate of prime. This result constitutes a refinement upon that of R. Zhang [8].

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, ..., a_n)$ be relative prime positive integers with $a_i\geq 2$. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ is the greatest integer not belonging to the set $\big\{ \sum_{i=1}^na_ix_i\ |x_i\in \mathbb{N}\big\}$. The general Frobenius problem includes the determination of $g(A)$ and the related Sylvester number $n(A)$ and Sylvester sum $s(A)$. We present a new approach to the Frobenius problem. Basically, we transform the problem into an easier optimization problem. If the new problem can be solved explicitly, then we will be able to obtain a formula of $g(A)$. We illustrate the idea by giving concise proof of some existing formulas and finding some interesting new formulas of $g(A), n(A), s(A)$. Moreover, we find that MacMahon's partition analysis applies to give a new way of calculating $n(A), s(A)$ by using a rational function representation of a polynomial determined by $A$.

Abstract:New algorithms for prime factorization that outperform the existing ones or take advantage of particular properties of the prime factors can have a practical impact on present implementations of cryptographic algorithms that rely on the complexity of factorization. Currently used keys are chosen on the basis of the present algorithmic knowledge and, thus, can potentially be subject to future breaches. For this reason, it is worth to investigate new approaches which have the potentiality of giving a computational advantage. The problem has also relevance in quantum computation, as an efficient quantum algorithm for prime factorization already exists. Thus, better classical asymptotic complexity can provide a better understanding of the advantages offered by quantum computers. In this paper, we reduce the factorization problem to the search of points of parametrizable varieties, in particular curves, over finite fields. The varieties are required to have an arbitrarily large number of intersection points with some hypersurface over the base field. For a subexponential or poly- nomial factoring complexity, the number of parameters have to scale sublinearly in the space dimension n and the complexity of computing a point given the parameters has to be subexponential or polynomial, respectively. We outline a procedure for building these varieties, which is illustrated with two constructions. In one case, we show that there are varieties whose points can be evaluated efficiently given a number of parameters not greater than n/2. In the other case, the bound is dropped to n/3. Incidentally, the first construction resembles a kind of retro-causal model. Retro-causality is considered one possible explanation of quantum weirdness.

Abstract:In this paper we study mixed sums of primes and linear recurrences. We show that if m=2(mod 4) and m+1 is a prime then $(m^{2^n-1}-1)/(m-1)\not=m^n+p^a$ for any n=3,4,... and prime power p^a. We also prove that if a>1 is an integer, u_0=0, u_1=1 and u_{i+1}=au_i+u_{i-1} for i=1,2,3,..., then all the sums u_m+au_n (m,n=1,2,3,...) are distinct. One of our conjectures states that any integer n>4 can be written as the sum of an odd prime, an odd Fibonacci number and a positive Fibonacci number.
Three Euler's Sieves and a Fast Prime Generator (Functional Pearl)

Abstract:The Euler's Sieve refines the Sieve of Eratosthenes to compute prime numbers, by crossing off each non prime number just once. Euler's Sieve is considered hard to be faithfully and efficiently coded as a purely functional stream based program. We propose three Haskell programs implementing the Euler's Sieve, all based on the idea of generating just once each composite to be crossed off. Their faithfulness with respect to the Euler's Sieve is up to costly stream unions imposed by the sequential nature of streams. Our programs outperform classical naive stream based prime generators such as trial division, but they are asymptotically worse than the O'Neill `faithful' Sieve of Eratosthenes. To circumvent the bottleneck of union of streams, we integrate our techniques inside the O'Neill program, thus obtaining a fast prime generator based on the Euler's Sieve and priority queues.

Abstract:In this paper, we define a variant of Fibonacci-like sequences that we call prime Fibonacci sequences, where one takes the sum of the previous two terms and returns the smallest odd prime divisor of that sum as the next term. We prove that these sequences always terminate in a power of two but can be extended infinitely to the left.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to try to establish a generic model for the problem that several multivariable number-theoretic functions represent simultaneously primes for infinitely many integral points. More concretely, we introduced briefly the research background-the history and current situation-from Euclid's second theorem to Green-Tao theorem. We analyzed some equivalent necessary conditions that irreducible univariable polynomials with integral coefficients represent infinitely many primes, found new necessary conditions which perhaps imply that there are only finitely many Fermat primes, obtained an analogy of the Chinese Remainder Theorem, generalized Euler's function, the prime-counting function and Schinzel-Sierpinski's Conjecture and so on. Nevertheless, this is only a beginning and it miles to go. We hope that number theorists consider further it.

Abstract:The article describes prime intervals into the prime factorization of the middle binomial coefficient. Prime factors and prime powers are distributed in layers. Each layer consists of non-repeated prime numbers which are chosen (not calculated) from the noncrossing prime intervals. Repeated factors are formed when primes are duplicated among different layers.

Abstract:A composition of a positive integer n is a k-tuple (λ1, λ2, …, λk) ∈ ℤk>0 such that n = λ1 + λ2 + … + λk. Our goal is to enumerate those compositions whose parts λ1, λ2, …, λk avoid a fixed arithmetic sequence. When this sequence is given by the even integers (i.e., all parts of the compositions must be odd), it is well known that the number of compositions is given by the Fibonacci sequence. A much more recent theorem says that when the parts are required to avoid all multiples of a given integer k, the resulting compositions are counted by a sequence given by a Fibonacci-type recursion of depth k. We extend this result to arbitrary arithmetic sequences. Our main tool is a lemma on generating functions that is no secret among experts but deserves to be more widely known.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce and study the iterates of the following family of functions $\varphi_k$ defined on natural numbers which exhibits nice properties. $$\varphi_k(x)=\left\lbrace \begin{array}{ll} x+k, & \mbox{ if $x$ is prime;}\\ \mbox{largest prime divisor of $x$,} & \mbox{ if $x$ is composite;} \end{array} \right.$$ In particular, we study the periodic behaviour of the trajectories of these iterated functions. In some cases, we provide proofs of these properties and in some other cases we pose some open problems based on numerical evidences supported by heuristic arguments.
