Abstract:We present a new family of sharp examples for the Szemerédi-Trotter theorem. These are the first examples not based on a rectangular lattice. We also include an application to the discrete inverse Loomis-Whitney problem.

Abstract:In this note, we describe an infinite family of sharp Szemerédi-Trotter constructions. These constructions are cartesian products of arbitrarily high dimensional generalized arithmetic progressions (GAPs), where the bases for these GAPs come from arbitrary number fields over $\mathbb{Q}$. This can be seen as an extension of a recent result of Guth and Silier, who provided similar constructions based on the field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{k})$ for square-free $k$. However, our argument borrows from an idea of Elekes, which produces cartesian products where the parts are of unequal size. This significantly simplifies the analysis and allows us to easily give constructions coming from any number field.

Abstract:We completely characterize point--line configurations with $\Theta(n^{4/3})$ incidences when the point set is a section of the integer lattice. This can be seen as the main special case of the structural Szemerédi-Trotter problem. We also derive a partial characterization for several generalizations: (i) We rule out the concurrent lines case when the point set is a Cartesian product of an arithmetic progression and an arbitrary set. (ii) We study the case of a Cartesian product where one or both sets are generalized arithmetic progression. Our proofs rely on deriving properties of multiplicative energies.

Abstract:We find new constructions of infinite families of skew Hadamard difference sets in elementary abelian groups under the assumption of the existence of cyclotomic strongly regular graphs. Our construction is based on choosing cyclotomic classes in finite fields.

Abstract:Characterization of homogeneous polynomials with isolated critical point at the origin follows from a study of complex geometry. Yau previously proposed a Numerical Characterization Conjecture. A step forward in solving this conjecture, the Granville–Lin–Yau Conjecture was formulated, with a sharp estimate that counts the number of positive integral points in n-dimensional (n⩾3) real right-angled simplices with vertices whose distances to the origin are at least n−1. The estimate was proven for n⩽6 but has a counterexample for n=7. In this project we come up with an idea of forming a New Sharp Estimate Conjecture where we need the distances of the vertices to be n. We have proved this New Sharp Estimate Conjecture for n⩽9.
Sharp density discrepancy for cut and project sets: An approach via lattice point counting

Abstract:Cut and project sets are obtained by taking an irrational slice of a lattice and projecting it to a lower dimensional subspace, and are fully characterised by the shape of the slice (window) and the choice of the lattice. In this context we seek to quantify fluctuations from the asymptotics for point counts. We obtain uniform upper bounds on the discrepancy depending on the diophantine properties of the lattice as well as universal lower bounds on the average of the discrepancy. In an appendix, Michael Björklund and Tobias Hartnick obtain lower bounds on the $L^2$-norm of the discrepancy also depending on the diophantine class; these lower bounds match our uniform upper bounds and both are therefore sharp. Using the sufficient criteria of Burago--Kleiner and Aliste-Prieto--Coronel--Gambaudo we find an explicit full-measure class of cut and project sets that are biLipschitz equivalent to lattices; the lower bounds on the variance indicate that this is the largest class of cut and project sets for which those sufficient criteria can apply.

In particular, we construct a new example of a conic-line arrangement with ordinary quasi-homogeneous singularities that has non-trivial monodromy.

Abstract:We derive a sharp inequality relating the second and fourth elementary symmetric functions of the eigenvalues of a trace-free matrix and give two applications. First, we give a new proof of the classification of conformally flat hypersurfaces in spaceforms. Second, we construct a functional which characterizes rotational hypersurfaces and catenoids.

Abstract:We develop a new method of constructing non-arithmetic lattices in the projective orthogonal group $\text{PO}(n,1)$ for every integer $n$ larger than one. The technique is to consider anti-holomorphic involutions on a complex arithmetic ball quotient, glue their fixed loci along geodesic subspaces, and show that the resulting metric space carries canonically the structure of a complete real hyperbolic orbifold. The volume of various of these non-arithmetic orbifolds can be explicitly calculated.

Abstract:The GLY conjecture has many applications in number theory and complex geometry. It gives a sharp upper estimate that counts the number of positive integral points in n dimensional (n >= 3) real right-angled simplices with vertices whose distance to the origin are at least n - 1. The estimate was proven for n <= 6 but has a counterexample for n = 7. In this project we come up with an idea of forming a new sharp estimate conjecture different from [26] where the distances of the vertices are at least n - 1. The counterexample for the GLY conjecture no longer gives a counterexample for the new sharp estimate conjecture. We have proved the new sharp estimate conjecture for n <= 7. This paper gives hope to prove the new conjecture in general.

Abstract:We establish a group-action version of the Szemerédi-Trotter theorem over any field, extending Bourgain's result for the group $\mathrm{SL}_2(k)$. As an Elekes-Szabó-type application, we obtain quantitative bounds on the number of collinear triples on reducible cubic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3(k)$, where $k = \mathbb{F}_{q}$ and $k = \mathbb{C}$, thereby improving a recent result by Bays, Dobrowolski, and the second author.

Abstract:Consider k x n matrices with rank conditions placed on intervals of columns. The ranks that are actually achievable correspond naturally to upper triangular partial permutation matrices, and we call the corresponding subvarieties of Gr(k,n) the _interval positroid varieties_, as this class lies within the class of positroid varieties studied in [Knutson-Lam-Speyer]. It includes Schubert and opposite Schubert varieties, and their intersections, and is Grassmann dual to the projection varieties of [Billey-Coskun]. Vakil's "geometric Littlewood-Richardson rule" [Vakil] uses certain degenerations to positively compute the H^*-classes of Richardson varieties, each summand recorded as a (2+1)-dimensional "checker game". We use his same degenerations to positively compute the K_T-classes of interval positroid varieties, each summand recorded more succinctly as a 2-dimensional "K-IP pipe dream". In Vakil's restricted situation these IP pipe dreams biject very simply to the puzzles of [Knutson-Tao]. We relate Vakil's degenerations to Erd\H os-Ko-Rado shifting, and include results about computing "geometric shifts" of general T-invariant subvarieties of Grassmannians.
Surface counterexamples to the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture

Abstract:It is well known that the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture is true for arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay varieties, projective curves, smooth surfaces, smooth threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^5$, and toric varieties of codimension two. After J. McCullough and I. Peeva constructed counterexamples in 2018, it has been an interesting question to find the categories such that the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture holds. So far, surface counterexamples have not been found while counterexamples of any dimension greater or equal to 3 are known. In this paper, we construct counterexamples to the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture for projective surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^4$ and investigate projective invariants, cohomological properties, and geometric properties. The counterexamples are constructed via binomial rational maps between projective spaces.

Smooth Points on Positroid Varieties

Abstract:In the Grassmannian $Gr_{\mathbb{C}}(k,n)$ we have positroid varieties $\Pi_f$, each indexed by a bounded affine permutation $f$ and containing torus-fixed points $\lambda \in \Pi_f$. In this paper we consider the partially ordered set consisting of quadruples $(k,n,\Pi_f,\lambda)$ (or \textit{(positroid) pairs} $(\Pi_f,\lambda)$ for short). The partial order is the ordering given by the covering relation $\lessdot$ where $(\Pi_f',\lambda') \lessdot (\Pi_f,\lambda)$ if $\Pi_f'$ is obtained by $\Pi_f$ by \textit{deletion} or \textit{contraction.} Using the results of Snider [2010], we know that positroid varieties can be studied in a neighborhood of each of these points by \textit{affine pipe dreams.} Our main theorem provides a quick test of when a positroid variety is smooth at one of these given points. It is sufficient to test smoothness of a positroid variety by using the main result to test smoothness at each of these points. These results can also be applied to the question of whether Schubert varieties in flag manifolds are smooth at points given by 321-avoiding permutations, as studied in Graham/Kreimer [2020]. We have a secondary result, which describes the minimal singular positroid pairs in our ordering - these are the positroid pairs where any deletion or contraction causes it to become smooth.

Abstract:The lattice of flats $\mathcal L_M$ of a matroid $M$ is combinatorially well-behaved and, when $M$ is realizable, admits a geometric model in the form of a "matroid Schubert variety". In contrast, the lattice of flats of a polymatroid exhibits many combinatorial pathologies and admits no similar geometric model. We address this situation by defining the lattice $\mathcal L_P$ of "combinatorial flats" of a polymatroid $P$. Combinatorially, $\mathcal L_P$ exhibits good behavior analogous to that of $\mathcal L_M$: it is graded, determines $P$ when $P$ is simple, and is top-heavy. When $P$ is realizable over a field of characteristic 0, we show that $\mathcal L_P$ is modelled by a "polymatroid Schubert variety". Our work generalizes a number of results of Ardila-Boocher and Huh-Wang on matroid Schubert varieties; however, the geometry of polymatroid Schubert varieties is noticeably more complicated than that of matroid Schubert varieties. Many natural questions remain open.

Sharp Taylor Polynomial Enclosures in One Dimension

Abstract:It is often useful to have polynomial upper or lower bounds on a one-dimensional function that are valid over a finite interval, called a trust region. A classical way to produce polynomial bounds of degree $k$ involves bounding the range of the $k$th derivative over the trust region, but this produces suboptimal bounds. We improve on this by deriving sharp polynomial upper and lower bounds for a wide variety of one-dimensional functions. We further show that sharp bounds of degree $k$ are at least $k+1$ times tighter than those produced by the classical method, asymptotically as the width of the trust region approaches zero. We discuss how these sharp bounds can be used in majorization-minimization optimization, among other applications.

Stable closed geodesics and stable figure-eights in convex hypersurfaces

Abstract:For each odd $n \geq 3$, we construct a closed convex hypersurface of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ that contains a non-degenerate closed geodesic with Morse index zero. A classical theorem of J. L. Synge would forbid such constructions for even $n$, so in a sense we prove that Synge's theorem is "sharp." We also construct stable figure-eights: that is, for each $n \geq 3$ we embed the figure-eight graph in a closed convex hypersurface of $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, such that sufficiently small variations of the embedding either preserve its image or must increase its length. These index-zero geodesics and stable figure-eights are mainly derived by constructing explicit billiard trajectories with "controlled parallel transport" in convex polytopes.
