Abstract:This paper considers an online hierarchical scheduling problem on parallel identical machines. We are given a set of m machines and a sequence of jobs. Each machine has a different hierarchy, and each job also has a hierarchy associated with it. A job can be assigned to a machine only if its hierarchy is no less than that of the machine. The objective is to minimize the makespan, i.e., the maximum load of all machines. Two models are studied in the paper. For the fractional model, we present an improved algorithm and lower bounds. Both the algorithm and the lower bound are based on solutions of mathematical programming. For any given m, our algorithm is optimal by numerical calculation. For the integral model, we present both a general algorithm for any m, and an improved algorithm with better competitive ratios of 2.333 and 2.610 for m=4 and 5, respectively.

Abstract:We study on-line scheduling of equal-length jobs on parallel machines. Our main result is an algorithm with competitive ratio decreasing to e/(e - 1), approximate to 1.58 as the number of machine increases. For m >= 3, this is the first algorithm better than 2-competitive greedy algorithms:Our algorithm has an additional property called immediate decision: at each time, it is immediately decided for each newly released job if it will be scheduled, and if so, then also the time interval and machine where it is scheduled is fixed and cannot be changed later. We show that for two machines, no deterministic algorithm with immediate decision is better than 1.8-competitive; this lower bound shows that our algorithm is optimal for m = 2 in this restricted model. We give some additional lower bounds for algorithms with immediate decision.

Abstract:We consider the problem of scheduling n independent multiprocessor tasks with due dates and unit processing times, where the objective is to compute a schedule maximizing the throughput. We derive the complexity results and present several approximation algorithms. For the parallel variant of the problem, we introduce the first-fit increasing algorithm and the latest-fit increasing algorithm, and prove that their worst-case ratios are 2 and 2 − 1/m, respectively (m ≥ 2 is the number of processors). Then we propose a revised algorithm with worst-case ratio bounded by 3/2 − 1/(2m − 2) (m is even) and 3/2 − 1/(2m) (m is odd). For the dedicated variant, we present a simple greedy algorithm. We show that its worst-case ratio is bounded by √m+ 1. We straighten this result by showing that the problem (even for a common due date D = 1) cannot be approximated within a factor of m 1/2−ε for any ε > 0, unless NP = ZPP.

Abstract:In this paper, motivated by on-line admission control in the hard deadline model, we deal with the following scheduling problem. We are given m identical machines (multi-streams). All jobs (requests) have identical processing time. Each job is associated with a release time and a deadline, neither of which is known until the job arrives. As soon as a job is available, we must immediately decide if the job is accepted or rejected. If a job is accepted, then it must be completed no later than its deadline. The goal is to maximize the total number of jobs accepted. The one-machine case has been extensively studied while little is known for multiple machines. Our main result is deriving a nontrivial optimal online algorithm with competitive ratio $\frac{3}{2}$ for the two-machine case by carefully investigating various strategies. Deterministic lower bounds for the general case are also given.

Abstract:We consider the problem of scheduling jobs on-line on parallel batch processing machines with dynamic job arrivals to minimize makespan. We are given m identical batch processing machines, each of which can handle up to B (the capacity of a machine) jobs simultaneously. The jobs that are processed together form a batch, and all jobs in a batch start and complete at the same time. The processing time of a batch is a constant, which is independent of the number and identity of the jobs. Each job becomes available at its arrival time, which is unknown in advance. First we deal with the unbounded case where the capacity of the batch processing machines is infinite, and derive an optimal on-line algorithm with competitive ratio 1+ g m , where g m >0 is determined by (1+ g m ) m +1 = g m +2. We then consider the bounded case where the capacity B of the batch processing machines is bounded. We provide an on-line algorithm with competitive ratio (\sqrt{5}+1)/2 (the golden ratio) and prove that the result is the best possible for all m .

Abstract:We consider a fundamental online scheduling problem in which jobs with processing times and deadlines arrive online over time at their release dates. The task is to determine a feasible preemptive schedule on a single or multiple possibly unrelated machines that maximizes the number of jobs that complete before their deadline. Due to strong impossibility results for competitive analysis on a single machine, we require that jobs contain some slack $\varepsilon>0$, which means that the feasible time window for scheduling a job is at least $1+\varepsilon$ times its processing time on each eligible machine. Our contribution is two-fold: (i) We give the first non-trivial online algorithms for throughput maximization on unrelated machines, and (ii), this is the main focus of our paper, we answer the question on how to handle commitment requirements which enforce that a scheduler has to guarantee at a certain point in time the completion of admitted jobs. This is very relevant, e.g., in providing cloud-computing services, and disallows last-minute rejections of critical tasks. We present an algorithm for unrelated machines that is $\Theta\big(\frac{1}\varepsilon\big )$-competitive when the scheduler must commit upon starting a job. Somewhat surprisingly, this is the same optimal performance bound (up to constants) as for scheduling without commitment on a single machine. If commitment decisions must be made before a job's slack becomes less than a $\delta$-fraction of its size, we prove a competitive ratio of $\mathcal{O}\big(\frac{1}{\varepsilon - \delta}\big)$ for $0 < \delta < \varepsilon$. This result nicely interpolates between commitment upon starting a job and commitment upon arrival. For the latter commitment model, it is known that no (randomized) online algorithm admits any bounded competitive ratio.

Abstract:We study the problem of on-line scheduling of parallel jobs on two machines. The jobs are parallel in the sense that each of them specifies the number of processors, in this case 1 or 2, required for simultaneous processing. The jobs are presented one by one. Upon receiving a job, we must assign the job to a time slot in the schedule before the next job is presented. No re-assignment is allowed. The goal is to minimize the makespan of the final schedule. There is a straightforward algorithm which achieves a competitive ratio of 2. In this paper we show that no on-line algorithm can have a competitive ratio less than 1+2/3 (≈1.816). We also study two special cases of the problem: (i) Jobs arrive in a non-decreasing order of processing times where we give an optimal algorithm with competitive ratio 3/2; (ii) Jobs arrive in a non-increasing order of processing times where we show that no on-line algorithm has a competitive ratio less than 9/7 and give a greedy algorithm with a competitive ratio 4/3.

Abstract:We address a variant of scheduling problem on two identical machines, where we are given an additional speed-up resource. If a job uses the resource, its processing time may decrease. However, at any time the resource can only be used by at most one job. The objective is to minimize the makespan. For the offline version, we present an FPTAS. For the online version where jobs arrive over list, we propose an online algorithm with competitive ratio of 1.781, and show a lower bound of 1.686 for any online algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper we study the classical problem of throughput maximization. In this problem we have a collection J of n jobs, each having a release time , deadline , and processing time . They have to be scheduled non-preemptively on m identical parallel machines. The goal is to find a schedule which maximizes the number of jobs scheduled entirely in their window. This problem has been studied extensively (even for the case of ). Several special cases of the problem remain open. Bar-Noy et al. (Proceedings of the Thirty-First Annual ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing, May 1–4, 1999, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, pp. 622–631. ACM, 1999, https://doi.org/10.1145/301250.301420) presented an algorithm with ratio for m machines, which approaches as m increases. For , Chuzhoy et al. (42nd Annual Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS) 2001, 14–17 October 2001, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, pp. 348–356. IEEE Computer Society, 2001) presented an algorithm with approximation with ratio (for any ). Recently Im et al. (SIAM J Discrete Math 34(3):1649–1669, 2020) presented an algorithm with ratio for some absolute constant for any fixed m . They also presented an algorithm with ratio for general m which approaches 1 as m grows. The approximability of the problem for remains a major open question. Even for the case of and distinct processing times the problem is open (Sgall in: Algorithms - ESA 2012 - 20th Annual European Symposium, Ljubljana, Slovenia, September 10–12, 2012. In this paper we study the case of and show that if there are c distinct processing times, i.e. 's come from a set of size c , then there is a randomized -approximation that runs in time , where T is the largest deadline. Therefore, for constant m and constant c this yields a PTAS. Our algorithm is based on proving structural properties for a near optimum solution that allows one to use a dynamic programming with pruning.

Abstract:We study a maximization problem: online scheduling on m identical machines to maximize the number of early jobs. The problem is online in the sense that all jobs arrive over time. Each job's characteristics, such as processing time and due date, become known at its arrival time. We consider the preemption-restart model, in which preemption is allowed, while once a job is restarted, it loses all the progress that has been made on this job so far. If in some schedule a job is completed before or at its due date, then it is called early (or on time). The objective is to maximize the number of early jobs. For m identical machines, we prove an upper bound 1-(1/2m) of competitive ratio and show that ECT (earliest completion time) algorithm is 1/2-competitive.

Abstract:In this paper we consider one of the most basic scheduling problems where jobs have their respective arrival times and deadlines. The goal is to schedule as many jobs as possible non-preemptively by their respective deadlines on m identical parallel machines. For the last decade, the best approximation ratio known for the single machine case ($m = 1$) has been $1-1/e - \epsilon \approx 0.632$ due to [Chuzhoy-Ostrovsky-Rabani, FOCS 2001 and MOR 2006]. We break this barrier and give an improved 0.644-approximation. For the multiple machine case, we give an algorithm whose approximation guarantee becomes arbitrarily close to 1 as the number of machines increases. This improves upon the previous best $1 - 1/(1 + 1/m)^m$ approximation due to [Bar-Noy et al., STOC 1999 and SICOMP 2009], which converges to $1-1/e$ as m goes to infinity. Our result for the multiple-machine case extends to the weighted throughput objective where jobs have different weights, and the goal is to schedule jobs with the maximum total weight. Our results show that the $1 - 1/e$ approximation factor widely observed in various coverage problems is not tight for the non-preemptive maximum throughput scheduling problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the online version of the machine minimization problem (introduced by Chuzhoy et al., FOCS 2004), where the goal is to schedule a set of jobs with release times, deadlines, and processing lengths on a minimum number of identical machines. Since the online problem has strong lower bounds if all the job parameters are arbitrary, we focus on jobs with uniform length. Our main result is a complete resolution of the deterministic complexity of this problem by showing that a competitive ratio of $e$ is achievable and optimal, thereby improving upon existing lower and upper bounds of 2.09 and 5.2 respectively. We also give a constant-competitive online algorithm for the case of uniform deadlines (but arbitrary job lengths); to the best of our knowledge, no such algorithm was known previously. Finally, we consider the complimentary problem of throughput maximization where the goal is to maximize the sum of weights of scheduled jobs on a fixed set of identical machines (introduced by Bar-Noy et al. STOC 1999). We give a randomized online algorithm for this problem with a competitive ratio of e/e-1; previous results achieved this bound only for the case of a single machine or in the limit of an infinite number of machines.

Abstract:We study a fundamental online scheduling problem where jobs with processing times, weights, and deadlines arrive online over time at their release dates. The task is to preemptively schedule these jobs on a single or multiple (possibly unrelated) machines with the objective to maximize the weighted throughput, the total weight of jobs that complete before their deadline. To overcome known lower bounds for the competitive analysis, we assume that each job arrives with some slack $\varepsilon > 0$; that is, the time window for processing job $j$ on any machine $i$ on which it can be executed has length at least $(1+\varepsilon)$ times $j$'s processing time on machine $i$. Our contribution is a best possible online algorithm for weighted throughput maximization on unrelated machines: Our algorithm is $O\big(\frac1\varepsilon\big)$-competitive, which matches the lower bound for unweighted throughput maximization on a single machine. Even for a single machine, it was not known whether the problem with weighted jobs is "harder" than the problem with unweighted jobs. Thus, we answer this question and close weighted throughput maximization on a single machine with a best possible competitive ratio $\Theta\big(\frac1\varepsilon\big)$. While we focus on non-migratory schedules, our algorithm achieves the same (up to constants) performance guarantee when compared to an optimal migratory schedule.

Abstract:We investigate online scheduling with commitment for parallel identical machines. Our objective is to maximize the total processing time of accepted jobs. As soon as a job has been submitted, the commitment constraint forces us to decide immediately whether we accept or reject the job. Upon acceptance of a job, we must complete it before its deadline $d$ that satisfies $d \geq (1+\epsilon)\cdot p + r$, with $p$ and $r$ being the processing time and the submission time of the job, respectively while $\epsilon>0$ is the slack of the system. Since the hard case typically arises for near-tight deadlines, we consider $\varepsilon\leq 1$. We use competitive analysis to evaluate our algorithms. Our first main contribution is a deterministic preemptive online algorithm with an almost tight competitive ratio on any number of machines. For a single machine, the competitive factor matches the optimal bound $\frac{1+\epsilon}{\epsilon}$ of the greedy acceptance policy. Then the competitive ratio improves with an increasing number of machines and approaches $(1+\epsilon)\cdot\ln \frac{1+\epsilon}{\epsilon}$ as the number of machines converges to infinity. This is an exponential improvement over the greedy acceptance policy for small $\epsilon$. In the non-preemptive case, we present a deterministic algorithm on $m$ machines with a competitive ratio of $1+m\cdot \left(\frac{1+\epsilon}{\epsilon}\right)^{\frac{1}{m}}$. This matches the optimal bound of $2+\frac{1}{\epsilon}$ of the greedy acceptance policy for a single machine while it again guarantees an exponential improvement over the greedy acceptance policy for small $\epsilon$ and large $m$. In addition, we determine an almost tight lower bound that approaches $m\cdot \left(\frac{1}{\epsilon}\right)^{\frac{1}{m}}$ for large $m$ and small $\epsilon$.

Abstract:This paper considers the on-line problem of scheduling nonpreemptively n independent jobs on m > 1 identical and parallel machines with the objective to maximize the minimum machine completion time. It is assumed that the values of the processing times are unknown but the order of the jobs by their processing times is known in advance. We are asked to decide the assignment of all the jobs to some machines at time zero by utilizing only ordinal data rather than the actual magnitudes of jobs. Algorithms to slove the problem are called ordinal algorithms. In this paper, we give lower bounds and ordinal algorithms. We first propose an algorithm MIN which is at most (⌈∑_i = 1^m 1/ i⌉ + 1) -competitive for any m machine case, while the lower bound is ∑ i=1 m 1/i. Both are on the order of Θ(ln m ). Furthermore, for m = 3, we present an optimal algorithm.

Abstract:This paper considers scheduling on identical machines. The scheduling objective considered in this paper generalizes most scheduling minimization problems. In the problem, there are $n$ jobs and each job $j$ is associated with a monotonically increasing function $g_j$. The goal is to design a schedule that minimizes $\sum_{j \in [n]} g_{j}(C_j)$ where $C_j$ is the completion time of job $j$ in the schedule. An $O(1)$-approximation is known for the single machine case. On multiple machines, this paper shows that if the scheduler is required to be either non-migratory or non-preemptive then any algorithm has an unbounded approximation ratio. Using preemption and migration, this paper gives a $O(\log \log nP)$-approximation on multiple machines, the first result on multiple machines. These results imply the first non-trivial positive results for several special cases of the problem considered, such as throughput minimization and tardiness. Natural linear programs known for the problem have a poor integrality gap. The results are obtained by strengthening a natural linear program for the problem with a set of covering inequalities we call job cover inequalities. This linear program is rounded to an integral solution by building on quasi-uniform sampling and rounding techniques.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the semi-online preemptive scheduling problem with knownlargest job sizes on two uniform machines. Our goal is to maximize the continuous period of time(starting from time zero) when both machines are busy, which is equivalent to maximizing the minimummachine completion time if idle time is not introduced. We design optimal deterministic semi-onlinealgorithms for every machine speed ratio s ∈¸ [1,∞), and show that idle time is required to achieve theoptimality during the assignment procedure of the algorithm for any s > (s 2 + 3s + 1 / (s 2 + 2s + 1).The competitive ratio of the algorithms is (s 2 + 3s + 1) / (s 2 + 2s + 1), which matches the randomizedlower bound for every s ≥ 1. Hence randomization does not help for the discussed preemptive schedulingproblem.
