Abstract:Let $f:\mathbb{R}^n_{> 0} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^n_{>0}$ be an order-preserving and homogeneous function. We show that the set of eigenvectors of $f$ in $\mathbb{R}^n_{>0}$ is nonempty and bounded in Hilbert's projective metric if and only if $f$ satisfies a condition involving upper and lower Collatz-Wielandt numbers of readily computed auxiliary functions. This condition generalizes a test for the existence of eigenvectors using hypergraphs that was proved by Akian, Gaubert, and Hochart. We include several examples to show how the new condition can be combined with the hypergraph test to give a systematic approach to determine when homogeneous and order-preserving functions have eigenvectors in $\mathbb{R}^n_{>0}$. We also observe that if the entries of $f$ are real analytic functions on $\mathbb{R}^n_{>0}$, then the set of eigenvectors of $f$ in $\mathbb{R}^n_{>0}$ is nonempty and bounded in Hilbert's projective metric if and only if the eigenvector is unique, up to scaling.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is in the nonlinear Perron - Frobenius theory, to determine whether an order - preserving and homogeneous function \(f\) defined on the positive quadrant \(\mathbb{R}^n_{>0}\) has eigenvectors, and whether these eigenvectors are non - empty and bounded under the Hilbert projective metric. Specifically, the paper proposes a new necessary and sufficient condition for judging whether the eigenspace \(E(f)\) of such a function \(f\) is non - empty and bounded under the Hilbert projective metric.
### Main contributions of the paper
1. **New necessary and sufficient condition**:
- The author proposes a new condition, which is easier to verify than the existing conditions. This new condition allows researchers to first check the hypergraph condition, and if the hypergraph condition is not satisfied, only further checks on specific subsets are required.
2. **Improved results**:
- For multiplicatively convex functions, the paper gives simpler necessary and sufficient conditions for judging whether their eigenspaces are non - empty and bounded in \(\mathbb{R}^n_{>0}\).
3. **Uniqueness of real - analytic functions**:
- If \(f\) is real - analytic and its eigenspace is non - empty and bounded in \(\mathbb{R}^n_{>0}\), then \(f\) has a unique positive eigenvector (up to a scalar multiple) in the positive quadrant.
4. **Iterative convergence**:
- The paper also provides a new condition on the derivative of \(f\), which ensures that the normalized iteration \(\frac{f^k(x)}{\|f^k(x)\|}\) converges to an eigenvector of \(f\). Moreover, even if the normalized iteration of \(f\) does not converge, the normalized iteration of \(f+\text{id}\) will converge to an eigenvector of \(f\).
### Application examples
In the last section, the paper provides detailed examples showing how to use these new results in practical applications. These applications include population biology models and the Shapley operator related to stochastic games. Through these examples, the author proves the validity and practicality of the new conditions.
### Conclusion
In general, this paper provides a systematic solution to the problems of eigenvector existence and boundedness in the nonlinear Perron - Frobenius theory by introducing new conditions and methods. These results are not only of great theoretical significance but also have wide applicability in practical applications.
