Abstract:Combining creature forcing approaches from [KS12] and [FGKS17] , we show that, under ch , there is a proper ωω -bounding poset with א 2 -cc that forces continuum many pairwise different cardinal characteristics, parametrised by reals, for each one of the following six types: uniformity and covering numbers of Yorioka ideals as well as both kinds of localisation and anti-localisation cardinals, respectively. This answers several open questions from [KM22] .

Abstract:According to string theorists, String Theory, as the most promising candidate for the grand unification of all fundamental forces in the nature, should be the final theory of the world, and should be unique. But now there are five different looking string theories. As argued by the physicists, these theories should be equivalent, in a way dual to each other. On the other hand all previous theories like the Yang-Mills and the Chern-Simons theory should be parts of string theory. In particular their partition functions should be equal or equivalent to each other in the sense that they are equal after certain transformation. To compute partition functions, physicists use localization technique, a modern version of residue theorem, on infinite dimensional spaces. More precisely they apply localization formally to path integrals which is not well-defined yet in mathematics. In many cases such computations reduce the path integrals to certain integrals of various Chern classes on various finite dimensional moduli spaces, such as the moduli spaces of stable maps and the moduli spaces of vector bundles. The identifications of these partition functions among different theories have produced many surprisingly beautiful mathematical formulas like the famous mirror formula [22], as well as the Mariño-Vafa formula [25]. The mathematical proofs of these formulas from the string duality also depend on localization techniques on these various finite dimensional moduli spaces. The purpose of this note is to discuss our recent work on the subject. I will briefly discuss the proof of the Marinõ-Vafa formula, its generalizations and the related topological vertex theory [1]. More precisely we will use localization formulas in various form to compute the integrals of Chern classes on moduli spaces, and to prove those conjectures from string duality. For the proof of the Mariño-Vafa formula and the theory of topological vertex, we note that many aspects of mathematics are involved, such as the Chern-Simons knot invariants, combinatorics of symmetric groups, representations of Kac-Moody algebras, Calabi-Yau manifolds, geometry and topology of moduli space of stable maps, etc. We remark that localization technique has been very successful in proving many conjectures from physics, see my ICM 2002 lecture [21] for more examples. One of our major tools in the proofs of these conjectures is the functorial localization formula which is a variation of the classical localization formula, it transfers computations on complicated spaces to simple spaces, and connects computations of mathematicians and physicists. Game localisation: unleashing imagination with 'restricted' translation

Abstract:From its humble beginning in the 1970's, the video games industry has flourished and become a world-wide phenomenon. Although most games are developed in Japanese and English, the globalisation of popular culture and the desire to expand to new markets have led most producers to localise their games into many target language versions. This has brought about the emergence of a new field in translation, game localisation, which combines elements of audiovisual translation and software localisation. This paper looks at the specific features of game localisation which give it its unique nature. It examines the priorities and constraints associated with translation of this particular genre, which relies heavily on imagination and creativity to deliver a satisfactory game experience. Using as a case study the best-selling PlayStation series, Final Fantasy, examples are presented to illustrate the challenges game localisers face, focusing particularly on linguistic and cultural issues.

Abstract:We introduce and study some variants of remote sublocales, namely sublocales that are remote from dense sublocales and those that are *remote from dense sublocales. We show that the coframe of sublocales coincides with the collection of all sublocales remote from the Booleanization. Furthermore, the supplement of the Booleanization of any locale is the largest sublocale *remote from the Booleanization. We give conditions on localic maps such that their induced localic image and pre-image functions preserve sublocales that are remote (resp. *remote) from dense sublocales. We introduce new types of localic maps called f-remote preserving maps.

Abstract:abstract Any approach to interaction is confronted with the dilemma of reconciling the empirical fact that meaning is locally and interactionally managed, as shown by conversation analysis, with the fact that conversations are subject to genres that impose conventionalized expectations for allowable contributions and inferences, as advocated by the ethnography of communication. This theoretical paper attempts to overcome this challenge by integrating Langacker’s current-discourse-space model with Barsalou’s dynamic model of situated conceptualization. With reference to these frameworks, the paper sketches a grounded socio-cognitive model of meaning construction in context that combines the situated interactional negotiation of meaning with the discursive knowledge that underlies speech genres in the form of genre-simulators. To substantiate and illustrate the theoretical considerations, the paper draws on two extracts from spoken tourist-information transactions.

Abstract:We study morphisms of internal locales of Grothendieck toposes externally: treating internal locales and their morphisms as sheaves and natural transformations. We characterise those morphisms of internal locales that induce surjective geometric morphisms and geometric embeddings, demonstrating that both can be computed `pointwise'. We also show that the co-frame operations on the co-frame of internal sublocales can also be computed `pointwise' too.

Abstract:Non-locality is being intensively studied in various PDE-contexts and in variational problems. The numerical approximation also looks challenging, as well as the application of these models to Continuum Mechanics and Image Analysis, among other areas. Even though there is a growing body of deep and fundamental knowledge about non-locality, for variational principles there are still very basic questions that have not been addressed so far. Taking some of these as a motivation, we describe a general perspective on distinct classes of non-local variational principles setting a program for the analysis of this kind of problems. We start such program with the simplest problem possible: that of scalar, uni-dimensional cases, under a particular class of non-locality. Even in this simple initial scenario, one finds quite unexpected facts to the point that our intuition about local, classic problems can no longer guide us for these new problems. There are three main issues worth highlighting, in the particular situation treated: $\bullet$ natural underlying spaces involve different non-local types of derivatives as, for instance, fractional Sobolev spaces; $\bullet$ no convexity of integrands is required for existence of minimizers; $\bullet$ optimality is formulated in terms of quite special integral equations rather than differential equations. We are thus able to provide some specific answers to the initial questions that motivated our investigation. In subsequent papers, we will move on to consider the higher dimensional situation driven by the possibility that no convexity or quasiconvexity might be involved in weak lower semicontinuity in a full vector, higher dimensional situation.

Establishment of a locally adaptive allele in multidimensional continuous space

Abstract:Local adaptation is widely seen when species adapt to spatially heterogeneous environments. Although many theoretical studies have investigated the dynamics of local adaptation using two-population models, there remains a need to extend the theoretical framework to continuous space settings, reflecting the real habitats of species. In this study, we use a multidimensional continuous space model and mathematically analyze the establishment process of local adaptation, with a specific emphasis on the relative roles of mutation and migration. First, the role of new mutations is evaluated by deriving the establishment probability of a locally adapted mutation using a branching process and a diffusion approximation. Next, the contribution of immigrants from a neighboring region with similar environmental conditions is considered. Theoretical predictions of the local adaptation rate agreed with the results of Wright-Fisher simulations in both mutation-driven and migration-driven cases. Evolutionary dynamics depend on several factors, including the strength of migration and selection, population density, habitat size, and spatial dimensions. These results offer a theoretical framework for assessing whether mutation or migration predominantly drives convergent local adaptation in spatially continuous environments in the presence of patchy regions with similar environmental conditions.

Abstract:Context and motivation: Software Product Lines (SPL) enable the creation of software product families with shared core components using feature models to model variability. Choosing features from a feature model to generate a product may not be sufficient in certain situations because the application engineer may need to be able to decide on configuration time the system's elements to which a certain feature will be applied. Therefore, there is a need to select which features have to be included in the product but also to which of its elements they have to be applied. Objective: We introduce local features that are selectively applied to specific parts of the system during product configuration. Results: We formalize local features using multimodels to establish relationships between local features and other elements of the system models. The paper includes examples illustrating the motivation for local features, a formal definition, and a domain-specific language for specification and implementation. Finally, we present a case study in a real scenario that shows how the concept of local features allowed us to define the variability of a complex system. The examples and the application case show that the proposal achieves higher customization levels at the application engineering phase.

We present an example of a colocally connected continuum that is not a -continuum, answering a question by Espinoza and Matsuhashi. We give several positive answers to this question for unicoherent continua. We also present some equivalences for the class of homogeneous Hausdorff continua with the property of Kelley.

Abstract:Since localisation emerged in the 1980s as an activity linked to the software industry, its evolution has gone hand in hand with technological advances. In the globalised market of the 21st century, an ever-increasing range of digital products must be localised. While academic institutions are aware of how the insatiable demand for localisation is affecting the translation industry, there is no consensus regarding what courses on localisation should teach and how they should teach it. This article reports the findings of a survey-based study that adopted a descriptive-interpretive methodology to collect both quantitative and qualitative data from a group of 16 localisation trainers teaching on undergraduate translation courses in Spanish universities. The results reinforce the finding of an earlier unpublished study by the same authors (AUTHOR 2018) that localisation training is keeping pace with technological evolution. In addition, respondents noted that one of their main challenges is finding authentic teaching materials and recommended closer collaboration between academia and the localisation industry.

Abstract:Optimization is a mathematical discipline or tool suitable for minimizing or maximizing a function. It has been largely used in every scientific field to solve problems where it is necessary to find a local or global optimum. In the engineering field of localization, optimization has been adopted too, and in the literature, there are several proposals and applications that have been presented. In the first part of this article, the optimization problem is presented by considering the subject from a purely theoretical point of view and both single objective (SO) optimization and multi-objective (MO) optimization problems are defined. Additionally, it is reported how local and global optimization problems can be tackled differently, and the main characteristics of the related algorithms are outlined. In the second part of the article, extensive research about local and global localization algorithms is reported and some optimization methods for local and global optimum algorithms, such as the Gauss–Newton method, Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Differential Evolution (DE), and so on, are presented; for each of them, the main concept on which the algorithm is based, the mathematical model, and an example of the application proposed in the literature for localization purposes are reported. Among all investigated methods, the metaheuristic algorithms, which do not exploit gradient information, are the most suitable to solve localization problems due to their flexibility and capability in solving non-convex and non-linear optimization functions.
