Abstract:We have studied the ordering dynamics of a two-dimensional system which consists of a single layer of spherical block copolymer microdomains in a thin film. We follow the annealing process after a quench from the disordered state by electron microscopy and time-lapse atomic force microscopy. At late times the orientational correlation length xi(6) Of the microdomain lattice exhibits a t(1/4) temporal power law. We compare the time evolution of the densities of dislocations, disclinations and the dislocation orientational correlation function. While most disclinations condense into dislocations and most dislocations condense into "grain boundaries", the dynamics appear to involve the interplay of disclinations and lines of dislocations. Rather than isolated grains shrinking, the most frequently observed process is the collapse of a smaller grain which resides on the boundary of two larger grains.

Abstract:The forcing number of a perfect matching of a graph was introduced by Harary et al., which originated from Klein and Randić's ideal of innate degree of freedom of Kekulé structure in molecular graph. On the opposite side in some sense, Vukičević and Trinajstié proposed the anti-forcing number of a graph, afterwards Lei et al. generalized this idea to single perfect matching. Recently the forcing and anti-forcing polynomials of perfect matchings of a graph were proposed as counting polynomials for perfect matchings with the same forcing number and anti-forcing number respectively. In this paper, we obtain the explicit expressions of forcing and anti-forcing polynomials of a pyrene system. As consequences, the forcing and anti-forcing spectra of a pyrene system are determined.

Forcing Hexagons in Hexagonal Systems

Abstract:We introduce the concept of a forcing hexagon in a hexagonal system H, which is a hexagon h in H such that the subgraph of H obtained by deleting all vertices of h together with their incident edges has exactly one perfect matching. We show that any hexagonal system with a forcing hexagon is a normal hexagonal system. We further prove that every hexagon of a hexagonal system H is forcing if and only if H is a linear hexagonal chain, and that any other hexagonal system has at most two forcing hexagons. Using the tool of Z-transformation graphs developed by F. Zhang et al, we prove the co-existence property of forcing hexagons and forcing edges, and we obtain the structural characterizations for the hexagonal systems with a given number of forcing hexagons. Miscellaneous related results are presented. We also post a question for further investigation.

Abstract:We consider nine geometric systems: Miquel dynamics, P-nets, integrable cross-ratio maps, discrete holomorphic functions, orthogonal circle patterns, polygon recutting, circle intersection dynamics, (corrugated) pentagram maps and the short diagonal hyperplane map. Using a unified framework, for each system we prove an explicit expression for the solution as a function of the initial data; more precisely, we show that the solution is equal to the ratio of two partition functions of an oriented dimer model on an Aztec diamond whose face weights are constructed from the initial data. Then, we study the Devron property (Glick in J Geom Phys 87:161–189, 2015), which states the following: if the system starts from initial data that is singular for the backwards dynamics, this singularity is expected to reoccur after a finite number of steps of the forwards dynamics. Again, using a unified framework, we prove this Devron property for all of the above geometric systems, for different kinds of singular initial data. In doing so, we obtain new singularity results and also known ones (Glick in J Geom Phys 87:161–189, 2015; Yao in Glick's conjecture on the point of collapse of axis-aligned polygons under the pentagram maps (2014). Preprint arXiv:1410.7806). Our general method consists in proving that these nine geometric systems are all related to the Schwarzian octahedron recurrence (dSKP equation), and then to rely on the companion paper (Affolter et al. in Comb Theory 3(2), 2023), where we study this recurrence in general, prove explicit expressions and singularity results.

Uniform Asymptotics of Orthogonal Polynomials Arising from Coherent States

Abstract:In this paper, we study a family of orthogonal polynomials $\{\phi_n(z)\}$ arising from nonlinear coherent states in quantum optics. Based on the three-term recurrence relation only, we obtain a uniform asymptotic expansion of $\phi_n(z)$ as the polynomial degree $n$ tends to infinity. Our asymptotic results suggest that the weight function associated with the polynomials has an unusual singularity, which has never appeared for orthogonal polynomials in the Askey scheme. Our main technique is the Wang and Wong's difference equation method. In addition, the limiting zero distribution of the polynomials $\phi_n(z)$ is provided.

Abstract:A new recursion relation of coefficients of fractional parentage (CFP) with seniority provides an efficient algorithm for computation. As a result of the generalised Wigner-Eckart theorem of semisimple Lie groups, the CFP are factorised into isoscalar factors (ISF) of the symmetry group of n bosons. The evaluations are done in the scheme of second quantisation. An analytic formula of the multiplicity of an irreducible representation (IR) of O(3) in an IR of O(N) is presented. A complete label (including seniority) of the states for the system of bosons, each with angular momentum l, is also presented.
The candidacy of shuffle and shear during compound twinning in hexagonal close-packed structures

Abstract:This paper proposes a systematic generalized formulation for calculating both atomic shuffling and shear candidates for a given compound twinning mode in hexagonal closed-packed metals. Although shuffles play an important role in the mobility of twinning dislocations in non-Bravais metallic lattices, their analytical expressions have not been previously derived. The method is illustrated for both flat planes and corrugated planes which are exemplified by {11-22} and {10-12} twinning modes, respectively. The method distinguishes between shuffle displacements and net shuffles. While shuffle displacements correspond to movements between ideal atom positions in the parent and twin lattices, net shuffles comprise contributions from shear on overlying planes which can operate along opposite directions to those of shuffle displacements. Thus, net shuffles in the twinning direction can vanish in a limiting case, as is interestingly the case for those needed in the second plane by the b_4 dislocation candidate in {11-22} twinning. It is found that while shuffle displacement vectors can be irrational when K_1 is corrugated, net shuffle vectors are always rational.

Abstract:We provide a simple method to recognize a classical orthogonal polynomial sequence on a q -quadratic lattice defined only by the three-term recurrence relation. It is pointed out that this can be extended to all orthogonal polynomials in the q -Askey scheme.

The Schwarzian octahedron recurrence (dSKP equation) I: explicit solutions

Abstract:We prove an explicit expression for the solutions of the discrete Schwarzian octahedron recurrence, also known as the discrete Schwarzian KP equation (dSKP), as the ratio of two partition functions. Each one counts weighted oriented dimer configurations of an associated bipartite graph, and is equal to the determinant of a Kasteleyn matrix. This is in the spirit of Speyer's result on the dKP equation, or octahedron recurrence [Spe07]. One consequence is that dSKP has zero algebraic entropy, meaning that the growth of the degrees of the polynomials involved is only polynomial. There are cancellations in the partition function, and we prove an alternative, cancellation free explicit expression involving complementary trees and forests. Using all of the above, we show several instances of the Devron property for dSKP, i.e., that certain singularities in initial data repeat after a finite number of steps. This has many applications for discrete geometric systems and is the subject of the companion paper [AdTM22]. We also prove limit shape results analogous to the arctic circle of the Aztec diamond. Finally, we discuss the combinatorics of all the other octahedral equations in the classification of Adler, Bobenko and Suris [ABS12].

On a variational model for the continuous mechanics exhibiting hexagonal to square Phase Transitions

Abstract:Inspired by Conti and Zanzotto \cite{Conti2004A}, we reformulate a simple variational model for reconstructive phase transitions in crystals arising in continuum mechanics in the framework of Landau's theory of phase transition(with slight modification). We provide and prove that this class of modular invariant functions admit exactly hexagonal-square lattices minimizers without passing through rhombic lattices, being the first rigorous result in this regard. Our result gives an affirmative answer to an open problem by in \cite{Conti2004A}. In addition, our result has independent interest from number theory.

Abstract:We further study the orthogonal polynomials with respect to the generalized Airy weight based on the work of Clarkson and Jordaan [{\em J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.} {\bf 54} ({2021}) {185202}]. We prove the ladder operator equations and associated compatibility conditions for orthogonal polynomials with respect to the Laguerre-type weight of the form $w(x)=x^\lambda w_0(x),\;\la>-1, x\in\mathbb{R}^+$. By applying them to the generalized Airy polynomials, we are able to derive a discrete system for the recurrence coefficients. Combining with the Toda evolution, we establish the relation between the recurrence coefficients, the sub-leading coefficient of the monic generalized Airy polynomials and the associated Hankel determinant. Using Dyson's Coulomb fluid approach and with the aid of the discrete system for the recurrence coefficients, we obtain the large $n$ asymptotic expansions for the recurrence coefficients and the sub-leading coefficient of the monic generalized Airy polynomials. The large $n$ asymptotics (including the constant term) of the Hankel determinant has been derived by using a recent result in the literature. The long-time asymptotics of these quantities have also been discussed explicitly.

Analytic properties of sextet polynomials of hexagonal systems

Abstract:In this paper we investigate analytic properties of sextet polynomials of hexagonal systems. For the pyrene chains, we show that zeros of the sextet polynomials $P_n(x)$ are real, located in the open interval $(-3-2\sqrt{2},-3+2\sqrt{2})$ and dense in the corresponding closed interval. We also show that coefficients of $P_n(x)$ are symmetric, unimodal, log-concave, and asymptotically normal. For general hexagonal systems, we show that real zeros of all sextet polynomials are dense in the interval $(-\infty,0]$, and conjecture that every sextet polynomial has log-concave coefficients.

Newton Polyhedrons and Hodge Numbers of Non-degenerate Laurent Polynomials

Abstract:Claude Sabbah has defined the Fourier transform $G$ of the Gauss-Manin system for a non-degenerate and convenient Laurent polynomial and has shown that there exists a polarized mixed Hodge structure on the vanishing cycle of $G$. In this article, we consider certain non-degenerate and convenient Laurent polynomials $f_{P,\mathbf{a}}$, whose Newton polyhedron at infinity is a simplicial polytope $P$. First, we consider the stacky fan $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}_P$ given by $P$ and show that for each quotient stacky fan of $\boldsymbol{\Sigma}_P$, there is a natural polarized mixed Hodge structure on the ring of conewise polynomial functions on it. Then, we describe the polarized mixed Hodge structure on the vanishing cycle associated to $f_{P,\mathbf{a}}$ using these rings of conewise polynomial functions. In particular, we compute the Hodge diamond of the vanishing cycle. As a further consequence, we can solve the Birkhoff problem of such a Laurent polynomial by using elementary methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize D. H. Lehmer's result to give a sufficient condition for level one cusp forms f with integral Fourier coefficients such that the smallest n for which the coefficients a_n(f)=0 must be a prime. Then we describe a method to compute a bound B of n such that a_n(f)0 for all n<B. As examples, we achieve the explicit bounds B_k for the unique cusp form Δ_k of level one and weight k with k=16, 18, 20, 22, 26 such that a_n(Δ_k)0 for all n<B_k.

Abstract:Foata and Schützenberger gave an expansion for the Eulerian polynomial $A_n(t)$ in terms of the basis $\{t^j(1+t)^{n-1-2j}\}$ for the space of polynomials $f(t)$ satisfying $f(t)=t^{n-1}f(1/t)$. We generalize this result in two ways. First, we provide an analogue for the graded representation of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the cohomology of the permutohedral variety. Then we give expansions $h$-polynomials of polytopes obtained by cutting permutohedra with hyperplanes orthogonal to simple roots in terms of the same basis.

Abstract:In the present paper, we obtain the results on the degree of convergence of an H ‐periodic continuous function in generalized Hölder spaces using Hausdorff operator with monotonically non‐decreasing and monotonically non‐increasing rows of its hexagonal Fourier series. Some important corollaries are also deduced from our main theorems. Applications of main theorems are also obtained in this paper.

Abstract:With the help of El Bachraoui's lemma, the creative microscoping method, and a new form of the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials, we prove a $q$-supercongruence for double series and a $q$-supercongruence for triple series modulo the sixth power of a cyclotomic polynomial. As conclusions, two corresponding supercongruences for double and triple series, which are associated with the (D.2) supercongruence of Van Hamme, are given.
