Abstract:Systematical calculations on the alpha-decay half-lives of even-even medium mass nuclei with 82 < N <= 126 are carried out within the density-dependent cluster model using a two-potential approach. The decay width is achieved in terms of the bound state wavefunction, the scattering wavefunction and the outer potential, where the effective alpha-nucleus potential is obtained from the double-folded integral of the realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction with the mass distributions of a particle and daughter nucleus. Instead of the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) barrier penetration probability, the numerical solution of the Schrodinger equation for the bound state is presented. In addition, the shell effect on the alpha-preformation factor has been taken into account for even-even N = 126 isotones. The calculated alpha-decay half-lives are found to agree with experimental data with a mean factor of less than 2.

Abstract:Weak interaction processes continue to be hot topics in fundamental physics research. In this paper, we briefly review some recent advances in the theoretical study of beta and double-beta decays that include both the nuclear and atomic part of these processes. On the nuclear side, we present a statistical approach for the computation of the nuclear matrix elements (NME) for neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ). A range of NME values, the most probable value for NME, and the associated theoretical uncertainty are given. Correlations with other related observables are shown as well. On the atomic side, we first briefly review the methods used to obtain the electrons' wave functions. Further, we use them for the computation of some relevant kinematic quantities such as Fermi functions, electron spectra, and angular correlation between the emitted electrons. Then, we present applications of these calculations to the experimental data analysis related to the search of the Lorentz invariance violation in two-neutrino double-beta (2νββ) decay and description of the decay rates and decay rate ratios for allowed and unique forbidden electron capture (EC) processes.

Abstract:Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) is presently the only known experiment to distinguisch between Dirac neutrinos, different from their antiparticles, and Majorana neutrinos, identical with their antiparticles. In addition $0\nu\beta\beta$ allows to determine the absolute scale of the neutrino masses. This is not possible with neutrino oscillations. To determine the neutrino masses one must assume, that the light Majorana neutrino exchange is the leading mechanism for $0\nu\beta\beta$ and that the matrix element of this transition can ba calculated reliably. The experimental $0\nu\beta\beta$ transition amplitude in this mechanism is a product of the light left handed effective Majorana neutrino mass and of this transition matrix element. The different methods, Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA), Shell Model (SM), Projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (PHFB) and Interacting Boson Model (IBM2) used in the literature and the reliability of the matrix elements in these approaches are reviewed. In the second part it is investigated how one can determine the leading mechanism or mechanisms from the data of the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in different nuclei. Explicite expressions are given for the transition matrix elements. is shown, that possible interference terms allow to test CP (Charge and Parity conjugation) violation.

Competition between allowed and first-forbidden $β$ decay in $r$-process waiting-point nuclei within a relativistic beyond-mean-field approach

Abstract:We compute $\beta$-decay half-lives of isotonic nuclear chains located at neutron shell closures $N=50$, $82$, $126$ and $184$, which are of particular importance for the $r$-process nucleosynthesis, and study the role of first-forbidden transitions in a framework that includes complex nucleonic correlations beyond the quasiparticle random phase approximation. Such correlations are accounted for by coupling single nucleons to collective degrees of freedom (nuclear vibrations), and are found essential to reproduce available experimental $\beta$-decay rates and more precise many-body methods. We find that the nucleon-vibration correlations tend to decrease the probability of decay via first-forbidden transition near stability, as they enhance Gamow-Teller transitions at low energy. While in the lighter systems allowed transitions dominate, the decay of $N=126$ and $N=184$ nuclei is found to occur to a large extent via first-forbidden transitions, and in particular those induced by $1^-$ and $0^-$ operators. Overall the many-body method based on nucleon-vibration coupling provides an ideal framework for future large-scale calculations. Upcoming experimental measurements of $\beta$-decay rates in the $N=126$ region by radioactive-beam facilities will be crucial in order to validate the approach.

Abstract:The dominant decay mode of atomic nuclei is beta decay (β-decay), a process that changes a neutron into a proton (and vice versa). This decay offers a window to physics beyond the standard model, and is at the heart of microphysical processes in stellar explosions and element synthesis in the Universe1–3. However, observed β-decay rates in nuclei have been found to be systematically smaller than for free neutrons: this 50-year-old puzzle about the apparent quenching of the fundamental coupling constant by a factor of about 0.75 (ref. 4) is without a first-principles theoretical explanation. Here, we demonstrate that this quenching arises to a large extent from the coupling of the weak force to two nucleons as well as from strong correlations in the nucleus. We present state-of-the-art computations of β-decays from light- and medium-mass nuclei to 100Sn by combining effective field theories of the strong and weak forces5 with powerful quantum many-body techniques6–8. Our results are consistent with experimental data and have implications for heavy element synthesis in neutron star mergers9–11 and predictions for the neutrino-less double-β-decay3, where an analogous quenching puzzle is a source of uncertainty in extracting the neutrino mass scale12.

Abstract:The experimental data of newly observed a-decay chains, including new superheavy elements and medium-mass neutron-deficient isotopes, have been investigated by the generalized density-dependent cluster model. Instead of the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin barrier penetration probability, the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation with outgoing Coulomb wave boundary conditions is presented. The calculated alpha-decay half-lives are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. For superheavy nuclei, the calculated half-lives show that their stability against alpha-decay has a considerable increase with increasing neutron numbers. Predictions on alpha-decay half-lives are made for a new element 120, which may be useful for ongoing experiments.
Density-dependent nuclear interactions and the beta decay of 14C: chiral three-nucleon forces and Brown-Rho scaling

Abstract:We study the role of density-dependent low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interactions in describing the anomalously long beta decay lifetime of 14C. We approach this problem both from the perspective of chiral effective field theory, in which genuine three-body forces generate an effective density-dependent two-body interaction, as well as from the perspective of Brown-Rho scaling, in which the masses and form factor cutoffs in one-boson-exchange interactions are modified in a dense nuclear medium due to the partial restoration of chiral symmetry. The beta decay transition of 14C to the ground state of 14N is calculated within the shell model using a model space consisting of two 0p-shell holes within a closed 16O core. The effective 0p-shell interaction is calculated up to second order in perturbation theory with single-particle energies extracted from experiment. We find that both three-nucleon forces and Brown-Rho scaling medium modifications give qualitatively similar results not only for the ground state to ground state Gamow-Teller transition but also for Gamow-Teller transitions from excited states of 14C to the ground state of 14N. In this way, it is observed that at a low-momentum scale of V_(low-k) = 2.1 fm-1, medium-modifications of the nuclear force play an essential role in increasing the lifetime of 14C from a few minutes to an archaeologically long one of 5730 years.

Abstract:We study the influence of the Coulomb force on the Fermi beta-decays in nuclei. This work is composed of two main parts. In the first part, we calculate the Coulomb corrections to super-allowed beta decay. We use the notion of the isovector monopole state and the self-consistent charge-exchange Random Phase Approximation to compute the correction. In the second part of this work, we examine the influence of the anti-analog state on isospin mixing in the isobaric analog state and the correction to the beta-decay Fermi transition.

Abstract:The alpha-decay half-lives of even-even nuclei from Sm to Th are systematically studied based on the transfer matrix method. For the nuclear potential, a type of cosh-parametrized form is applied to calculate the penetration probability. Through a least-squares fit to experimental half-lives, we optimize the parameters in the potential and the a preformation factor P-0. During this process, P-0 is treated as a constant for each parent nucleus. Eventually, the calculated half-lives are found to agree well with the experimental data, which verifies the accuracy of the present approach. Furthermore, in recent studies, P-0 is regulated by the shell and paring effects plus the nuclear deformation. To this end, P-0 is here associated with the structural quantity, i.e., the microscopic correction of nuclear mass (E-mic). In this way, the agreement between theory and experiment is greatly improved by more than 20%, validating the appropriate treatment of P-0 in the scheme of E-mic.
Study of forbidden $β$ decays within the realistic shell model

Abstract:For the first time, half-lives and energy spectra of forbidden $\beta$ decays are calculated within the realistic shell model. Namely, we approach this issue starting from a realistic nucleon-nucleon potential and deriving effective Hamiltonians and decay operators. Our goal is to explore the sensitivity of the shape of calculated energy spectra to the renormalization of forbidden $\beta$ -decay operators, an operation that allows to take into account those configurations that are not explicitly included in the chosen model space. The region that has been considered for this investigation are nuclei outside the $^{78}$Ni core, more precisely we have studied the second-forbidden $\beta$ decays of $^{94}$Nb and $^{99}$Tc, and fourth-forbidden $\beta$ decays of $^{113}$Cd and $^{115}$In, that are currently of a renewed experimental interest in terms of novel spectroscopic techniques. Our results evidence that the introduction of a renormalized $\beta$-decay operator leads to a marked improvement of the reproduction of experimental half-lives. As regards the spectra of both second-forbidden and fourth-forbidden decays, we have found that their calculated shapes are in good agreement with the observed ones, even if scarcely responsive to the renormalization of the decay operator. We carry out also a detailed inspection of the different components of the calculated spectra for a deeper insight about their role in reproducing the experimental shapes.

Abstract:We use a reference state based on symmetry-restored states from deformed mean-field or generator-coordinate-method (GCM) calculations in conjunction with the in-medium similarity-renormalization group (IMSRG) to compute spectra and matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay. Because the decay involves ground states from two nuclei, we use evolved operators from the IMSRG in one nucleus in a subsequent GCM calculation in the other. We benchmark the resulting IMSRG+GCM method against complete shell-model diagonalization for both the energies of low-lying states in $^{48}$Ca and $^{48}$Ti and the $0\nu\beta\beta$ matrix element for the decay of $^{48}$Ca, all in a single valence shell. Our approach produces better spectra than either the IMSRG with a spherical-mean-field reference or GCM calculations with unevolved operators. For the $0\nu\beta\beta$ matrix element the improvement is slight, but we expect more significant effects in full ab-initio calculations.
The In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group at Finite Temperature

Abstract:The study of nuclei at finite temperature is of immense interest for many areas of nuclear astrophysics and nuclear-reaction science. A variety of ab initio methods are now available for computing the properties of nuclei from interactions rooted in Quantum Chromodynamics, but applications have largely been limited to zero temperature. In the present work, we extend one such method, the In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group (IMSRG), to finite temperature. Using an exactly-solvable schematic model that captures essential features of nuclear interactions, we show that the FT-IMSRG can accurately determine the energetics of nuclei at finite temperature, and we explore the accuracy of the FT-IMSRG in different parameter regimes, e.g., strong and weak pairing. In anticipation of FT-IMSRG applications for finite nuclei and infinite matter, we discuss differences arising from the choice of working with the canonical and the grand canonical ensembles. In future work, we will apply the FT-IMSRG with realistic nuclear interactions to compute nuclear structure and reaction properties at finite temperature, which are important ingredients for understanding nucleosynthesis in stellar environments, or modeling reactions of hot compound nuclei.

Abstract:Nuclear weak decays provide important probes to fundamental symmetries in nature. A precise description of these processes in atomic nuclei requires comprehensive knowledge on both the strong and weak interactions in the nuclear medium and on the dynamics of quantum many-body systems. In particular, an observation of the hypothetical double beta decay without emission of neutrinos ($0\nu\beta\beta$) would unambiguously demonstrate the Majorana nature of neutrinos and the existence of the lepton-number-violation process. It would also provide unique information on the ordering and absolute scale of neutrino masses. The next-generation tonne-scale experiments with sensitivity up to $10^{28}$ years after a few years of running will probably provide a definite answer to these fundamental questions based on our current knowledge on the nuclear matrix element (NME), the precise determination of which is a challenge to nuclear theory. Beyond-mean-field approaches have been frequently adapted for the study of nuclear structure and decay throughout the nuclear chart for several decades. In this review, we summarize the status of beyond-mean-field calculations of the NMEs of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay assuming the standard mechanism of an exchange of light Majorana neutrinos. The challenges and prospects in the extension and application of beyond-mean-field approaches for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay are discussed.

Abstract:Over the last decade, nuclear theory has made dramatic progress in few-body and ab initio many-body calculations. These great advances stem from chiral effective field theory ( χ EFT), which provides an efficient expansion and consistent treatment of nuclear forces as inputs of modern many-body calculations, among which the in-medium similarity renormalization group (IMSRG) and its variants play a vital role. On the other hand, significant efforts have been made to provide a unified description of the structure, decay, and reactions of the nuclei as open quantum systems. While a fully comprehensive and microscopic model has yet to be realized, substantial progress over recent decades has enhanced our understanding of open quantum systems around the dripline, which are often characterized by exotic structures and decay modes. To study these interesting phenomena, Gamow coupled-channel (GCC) method, in which the open quantum nature of few-body valence nucleons coupled to a deformed core, has been developed. This review focuses on the developments of the advanced IMSRG and GCC and their applications to nuclear structure and reactions.
Β-Decay Rates of Odd-Mass Neutron-Rich Isotopes in the Deformed Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation with Realistic Interactions

Abstract:The deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation with realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions is extended for the beta-decay of odd-mass neutron-rich Kr, Sr, Zr, and Mo isotopes, from their longest-lived isotopes to the experimentally unknown nuclei. The particle-particle and particle-hole channels of residual interactions are handled in large single-particle model spaces, based on the Bruckner G matrix with charge-dependent Bonn nucleon-nucleon forces. Both allowed Gamow-Teller and first-forbidden transitions are considered and different treatments for odd-mass systems are emphasized. The sensitivity of the calculated results to the single-particle level scheme and the particle-particle strength is discussed. The calculated Gamow-Teller strengths are analyzed, together with the contributions from first-forbidden transitions. The calculated half-lives are found to agree well with the experimental data over the orders of magnitude from 10(-2) to 10(3) s.

Abstract:We have developed a novel ab initio Gamow in-medium similarity renormalization group (Gamow IMSRG) in the complex-energy Berggren framework. The advanced Gamow IMSRG is capable of describing the resonance and nonresonant continuum properties of weakly bound and unbound nuclear many-body systems. As test grounds, carbon and oxygen isotopes have been calculated with chiral two- and three-nucleon forces from the effective field theory. Resonant states observed in the neutron-dripline 24O are well reproduced. The halo structure of the known heaviest Borromean nucleus 22C is clearly seen by calculating the density distribution in which the continuum s channel plays a crucial role. Furthermore, we predict low-lying resonant excited states in 22C. The Gamow IMSRG provides tractable ab initio calculations of weakly bound and unbound open quantum systems.
In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group for Closed and Open-Shell Nuclei

Abstract:We present a pedagogical introduction to the In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group (IM-SRG) framework for ab initio calculations of nuclei. The IM-SRG performs continuous unitary transformations of the nuclear many-body Hamiltonian in second-quantized form, which can be implemented with polynomial computational effort. Through suitably chosen generators, it is possible to extract eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian in a given nucleus, or drive the Hamiltonian matrix in configuration space to specific structures, e.g., band- or block-diagonal form. Exploiting this flexibility, we describe two complementary approaches for the description of closed- and open-shell nuclei: The first is the Multireference IM-SRG (MR-IM-SRG), which is designed for the efficient calculation of nuclear ground-state properties. The second is the derivation of nonempirical valence-space interactions that can be used as input for nuclear Shell model (i.e., configuration interaction (CI)) calculations. This IM-SRG+Shell model approach provides immediate access to excitation spectra, transitions, etc., but is limited in applicability by the factorial cost of the CI calculations. We review applications of the MR-IM-SRG and IM-SRG+Shell model approaches to the calculation of ground-state properties for the oxygen, calcium, and nickel isotopic chains or the spectroscopy of nuclei in the lower $sd$ shell, respectively, and present selected new results, e.g., for the ground- and excited state properties of neon isotopes.

Abstract:Purpose: Our objective is to apply an improved statistical global model of beta^- decay half-life systematics [1] generated by machine-learning techniques to the prediction of beta half-lives relevant to r-process nuclei. The primary aim of this application is to complement existing r-process-clock and matter-flow studies, thereby providing additional theoretical support for the planning of future activities of the world's network of rare-isotope laboratories. Results: Results are presented for nuclides situated on the r-ladders at N=50, 82, and 126 where abundances peak, as well as for nuclides that affect abundances between peaks or may be relevant to r-processes under different astrophysical scenarios. The half-lives of some of the targeted neutron-rich nuclides have either been recently measured or will be accessible at rare-isotope laboratories in the relatively near future. The results of our large-scale data-driven half-life calculations (generated by a "theory-thin" global statistical model) are compared to available experimental data, including recent measurements on very neutron-rich nuclei along an r-process path far from the valley of $\beta$ stability. Comparison is also made with corresponding results from traditional global models derived by semi-phenomenological "theory-thick" approaches.

Local and global effects of beta decays on r-process

Abstract:Nuclear beta decay rates are an essential ingredient in simulations of the astrophysical r-process. Most of these rates still rely on theoretical modeling. However, modern radioactive ion-beam facilities have allowed to measure beta half lives of some nuclei on or close to the r-process path. These data indicate that r-process half lives are in general shorter than anticipated in the standard theoretical predictions based on the Finite Range Droplet Model (FRDM). The data have also served as important constraints for improved predictions of half lives based on continuum QRPA calculations on top of the energy-density functional theory. Although these calculations are yet limited to spherical nuclei, they include the important r-process waiting point nuclei close to and at the neutron magic numbers $N=50, 82$ and 126. We have studied the impact of these new experimental and theoretical half lives on r-process nucleosynthesis within the two astrophysical sites currently favored for the r process: the neutrino-driven wind from the freshly born neutron star in a supernova explosion and the ejecta of the merger of two neutron stars. We find that the, in general, shorter beta decay rates have several important effects on the dynamics of r-process nucleosynthesis. At first, the matter flow overcomes the waiting point nuclei faster enhancing matter transport to heavier nuclei. Secondly, the shorter half lives result also in a faster consumption of neutrons resulting in important changes of the conditions at freeze-out with consequences for the final r-process abundances. Besides these global effects on the r-process dynamics, the new half lives also lead to some local changes in the abundance distributions.

Strong Interaction Dynamics and Fermi $β$ decay in the nucleon and the nucleus

Abstract:Nuclear super-allowed $\beta$ decay has been used to obtain tight limits on the value of the CKM matrix element $V_{ud}$ that is important for unitarity tests, and therefore important for tests of the standard model. Current requirements on precision are so intense that effects formerly thought too small to matter are now relevant. This article is a brief review of personal efforts to include the effects of strong interactions on Fermi $\beta $ decay. First I examine the role of isospin violation in the decay of the neutron. The size of the necessary correction depends upon detailed strong-interaction dynamics. The isospin violating parts of the nucleon wave function, important at the low energy of $\beta$ decay, can be constrained by data taken at much higher energies, via measurements, for example, of $ed\to e'\pi^\pm +\rm X $ reactions at Jefferson Laboratory. The next focus is on the role of nuclear short-ranged correlations, which affect the value of the correction needed to account for isospin violation in extracting the value of $V_{ud}$. The net result is that effects previously considered as irrelevant have become relevant for both neutron and nuclear $\beta$ decay.
