Abstract:A major open topic in cuprates is the interplay between the lattice and electronic dynamics and the importance of their coupling to the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC). As evidenced by Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure experiments (EXAFS), anharmonic structural effects are correlated with the charge dynamics and the transition to a superconducting phase in different HTSC compounds. Here we describe how structural anharmonic effects can be coupled to electronic and lattice dynamics in cuprate systems by performing the exact diagonalization of a prototype anharmonic many-body Hamiltonian on a relevant six-atom cluster and show that the EXAFS results can be understood as a Kuramoto synchronization between coupled internal quantum tunneling polarons associated with the two-site distribution of the copper-apical-oxygen ($Cu-O_{ap}$) pair in the dynamic structure. Furthermore, we find that this first order, anti-phase synchronization transition can be fine tuned by temperature and anharmonicity of the lattice vibrations, and promotes the pumping of charge, initially stored at the apical oxygen reservoirs, into the copper-oxide planes. Simultaneously, the internal quantum tunneling polaron extends to the copper-planar-oxygen ($Cu-O_{pl}$) pair. All these findings support an interpretation of the EXAFS data in terms of an effective, quantum mechanical triple-well-potential, which accurately represents the anti-phase synchronization of apical oxygens displacements and lattice-assisted charge transfer to the $CuO_2$ plane.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the interaction between the lattice and electron dynamics in copper - based superconductors and its importance for the high - temperature superconductivity mechanism. Specifically, the paper explores how to describe the coupling of structural anharmonic effects with electron and lattice dynamics in copper - based systems by exactly diagonalizing a prototypical anharmonic many - body Hamiltonian. It is found that the results of Extended X - ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) experiments can be understood as Kuramoto synchronization transitions, which occur between internal quantum tunneling polarons related to the double - site distribution of copper - apical oxygen (Cu−Oap) pairs in the dynamic structure. This transition is driven by the anharmonicity of lattice vibrations and promotes the charge pumping from the apical oxygen reservoir to the copper - oxygen plane. Meanwhile, the finite projection of the internal quantum tunneling polarons extends to the copper - planar oxygen (Cu−Opl) pairs. These findings allow for an interpretation based on an effective quantum - mechanical three - well potential model, which accurately represents the phase synchronization of the apical oxygen and the lattice - assisted charge transfer to the CuO2 plane. ### Main Problem Analysis 1. **Coupling of Lattice and Electron Dynamics in Copper - Based Superconductors** - Research Background: There are complex interactions between lattice and electron dynamics in copper - based superconductors, and these interactions are crucial for the high - temperature superconductivity mechanism. - Experimental Observation: Through EXAFS experiments, it is observed that anharmonic structural effects are related to charge dynamics and superconducting phase transitions. 2. **Anharmonic Effects and Charge Transfer** - Research Method: The anharmonic effects in 6 - atom clusters are studied by exactly diagonalizing a many - body Hamiltonian containing anharmonic effects. - Key Finding: The Kuramoto synchronization transition can explain the results of EXAFS experiments. This transition is driven by the anharmonicity of lattice vibrations, leading to the charge transfer from the apical oxygen reservoir to the copper - oxygen plane. 3. **Synchronization of Quantum Tunneling Polarons** - Model Construction: A three - well potential model is introduced to describe the phase synchronization between the apical oxygen and the copper - oxygen plane. - Physical Significance: The synchronization transition caused by anharmonic effects not only changes the stable position of Cu−Oap pairs but also forms a new in - plane quantum tunneling polaron (IQTP), which helps to understand the charge transfer mechanism in copper - based superconductors. ### Mathematical Models and Formulas - **Hamiltonian** \[ H = H_{el} + H_{ph} + H_{el - ph} + H_{Sr} \] where: - \( H_{el}=\sum_{i}\varepsilon_{i}n_{i}+t\sum_{\langle ij\rangle\sigma}(c^{\dagger}_{i\sigma}c_{j\sigma}+h.c.) + U\sum_{i}n_{i\uparrow}n_{i\downarrow} \) - \( H_{ph}=\hbar\omega(b^{\dagger}_{L}b_{L}+b^{\dagger}_{R}b_{R}) \) - \( H_{el - ph}=\lambda n_{L}(b^{\dagger}_{L}+b_{L})+\lambda n_{R}(b^{\dagger}_{R}+b_{R}) \) - \( H_{Sr}=\hbar\Omega_{Sr}\beta^{\dagger}\beta+K(\beta^{\dagger}b_{L}b_{R}+\beta b^{\dagger}_{L}b^{\dagger}_{R}) \) - **Kuramoto Model** \[ \dot{\theta}_{i}=\omega_{i}+Kr^{2}\sin(\theta_{i}(t)+\psi)+\xi_{i}(t) \] where: - \( r = \sqrt{1-\frac{K_{c}(\delta,T)}{K}} \) - \( K_{c}(\delta,T) \) is the critical coupling strength determined by temperature \( T \) and quenching diffusion \( \delta \). ### Conclusion This paper through exact diagonalization
