Abstract:In high-contrast composites, if an inclusion is in close proximity to the matrix boundary, then the stress, which is represented by the gradient of a solution to the Lamé systems of linear elasticity, may exhibits the singularities with respect to the distance $\varepsilon$ between them. In this paper, we establish the asymptotic formulas of the stress concentration for core-shell geometry with $C^{1,\alpha}$ boundaries in all dimensions by precisely capturing all the blow-up factor matrices, as the distance $\varepsilon$ between interfacial boundaries of a core and a surrounding shell goes to zero. Further, a direct application of these blow-up factor matrices gives the optimal gradient estimates.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in high - contrast composite materials, when the inclusion is very close to the matrix boundary, stress concentration may become singular. Specifically, the article aims to establish the asymptotic formula for stress concentration on the C1,α boundary of the core - shell structure and describe the stress concentration phenomenon by accurately capturing all divergence factor matrices, so as to obtain the optimal gradient estimate.
### Problem Background
In fiber - reinforced composite materials with high contrast, when the distance between the inclusion and the matrix approaches zero, the stress field will be highly concentrated in the narrow area between them. This stress concentration phenomenon has an important impact on the mechanical properties of materials, so understanding its behavior is crucial for evaluating the accuracy of numerical results.
### Main Research Objectives
1. **Establish Asymptotic Formula**: For the C1,α boundary in the core - shell geometry, establish an accurate asymptotic formula for stress concentration when the core approaches the shell interface.
2. **Optimal Gradient Estimate**: Through these asymptotic formulas, give the optimal estimate of the stress gradient.
3. **Influence of Boundary Data**: Explore the influence of boundary data on the stress singularity of C1,α inclusions, especially when the inclusions approach the outer boundary.
### Research Methods
- **Mathematical Model**: Based on the linear elasticity theory of the Lamé system, consider the Dirichlet problem with piecewise - constant coefficients.
- **Asymptotic Analysis**: By introducing auxiliary functions and the linear decomposition method, derive the asymptotic expansion of the stress gradient.
- **Divergence Factor Matrix**: Accurately capture the divergence factor matrix to describe the singular behavior of stress concentration.
### Main Results
- **Two - Dimensional Case**: The asymptotic formula for the stress gradient is given, and its divergence rate is proved to be \(\varepsilon^{-\frac{1}{1+\alpha}}\).
- **Three - Dimensional and Higher - Dimensional Cases**: The asymptotic formula for the stress gradient is also given, and its divergence rate is proved to be \(\varepsilon^{-1}\).
- **Influence of Boundary Data**: For C1,α inclusions, the boundary data does not contribute to the stress singularity, which is different from the case of C2,α inclusions.
### Formula Summary
The main formulas involved in the article include:
- Definition of stress tensor:
\[
e(u)=\frac{1}{2}(\nabla u+(\nabla u)^T)
\]
- Definition of elastic tensor \(C_0\):
\[
C_0^{ijkl}=\lambda\delta_{ij}\delta_{kl}+\mu(\delta_{ik}\delta_{jl}+\delta_{il}\delta_{jk})
\]
- Definition of auxiliary functions:
\[
\bar{u}_i(x', x_d)=\psi_i\bar{v}, \quad \bar{u}_0(x', x_d)=\phi(x', h(x'))(1 - \bar{v})
\]
- Key parameters in the asymptotic formula:
\[
M_{\alpha, \tau}=\frac{2\Gamma_\alpha}{(1 + \alpha)\tau^{\frac{1}{1+\alpha}}}
\]
where \(\Gamma_\alpha=\frac{\Gamma(\frac{1}{1+\alpha})}{\Gamma(\frac{\alpha}{1+\alpha})}\), and \(\Gamma(s)\) is the Gamma function.
Through these formulas and analyses, the article provides a theoretical basis for understanding and predicting the stress concentration phenomenon in high - contrast composite materials.
