Abstract:We initiate the study of Ramsey numbers of trails. Let $k \geq 2$ be a positive integer. The Ramsey number of trails with $k$ vertices is defined as the the smallest number $n$ such that for every graph $H$ with $n$ vertices, $H$ or the complete $\overline{H}$ contains a trail with $k$ vertices. We prove that the Ramsey number of trails with $k$ vertices is at most $k$ and at least $2\sqrt{k}+\Theta(1)$. This improves the trivial upper bound of $\lfloor 3k/2\rfloor -1$.

3-uniform monotone paths and multicolor Ramsey numbers

Abstract:The monotone path $P_{n+2}$ is an ordered 3-uniform hypergraph whose vertex set has size $n+2$ and edge set consists of all consecutive triples. In this note, we consider the collection $\mathcal{J}_n$ of ordered 3-uniform hypergraphs named monotone paths with $n$ jumps, and we prove the following relation \begin{equation*} r(3;n) \leq R(P_{n+2},\mathcal{J}_n) \leq 4^n \cdot r(3;n), \end{equation*} where $r(3;n)$ is the multicolor Ramsey number for triangles and $R(P_{n+2},\mathcal{J}_n)$ is the hypergraph Ramsey number for $P_{n+2}$ versus any member of $\mathcal{J}_n$. In particular, whether $r(3;n)$ is exponential, which is a very old problem of Erdős, is equivalent to whether $R(P_{n+2},\mathcal{J}_n)$ is exponential.

Abstract:Let $R(C_n)$ be the Ramsey number of the cycle on $n$ vertices. We prove that, for some $C > 0$, with high probability every $2$-colouring of the edges of $G(N,p)$ has a monochromatic copy of $C_n$, as long as $N\geq R(C_n) + C/p$ and $p \geq C/n$. This is sharp up to the value of $C$ and it improves results of Letzter and of Krivelevich, Kronenberg and Mond.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the multicolored Ramsey number $R(G_1,\dots,G_n,K_{n_1},\dots,K_{n_r})$ is at least $(\gamma-1)(\kappa-1)+1$ for arbitrary connected graphs $G_1,\dots,G_n$ and $n_1,\dots,n_r\in\mathbb{N}$, where $\gamma=R(G_1,\dots,G_n)$ and $\kappa=R(K_{n_1},\dots,K_{n_r})$. Erd\H os at al. conjectured that $R(C_n,K_l)=(n-1)(l-1)+1$ for every $n\geq l\geq 3$ except for $n=l=3$. Nikiforov proved this conjecture for $n\geq 4l+2$. Using the above bound, we derive the following generalization of this result. $R(C_n,K_{n_1},\dots,K_{n_r})=(n-1)(\kappa-1)+1$, where $\kappa=R(K_{n_1},\dots,K_{n_r})$ and $n\geq 4\kappa+2$.

Abstract:Let $f(K_n, H, q)$ be the minimum number of colors needed to edge-color $K_n$ so that every copy of $H$ is colored with at least $q$ colors. Originally posed by Erdős and Shelah when $H$ is complete, the asymptotics of this extremal function have been extensively studied when $H$ is a complete graph or a complete balanced bipartite graph. Here we investigate this function for some other $H$, and in particular we determine the asymptotic behavior of $f(K_n, P_v, q)$ for almost all values of $v$ and $q$, where $P_v$ is a path on $v$ vertices.

Abstract:For given graphs G_1, G_2, … , G_k , k≥ 2 , the k -color Ramsey number, denoted by R(G_1, G_2, … , G_k) , is the smallest integer N such that if we arbitrarily color the edges of a complete graph of order N with k colors, then it always contains a monochromatic copy of G_i in color i , for some 1 ≤ i ≤ k . Let C_m be a cycle of length m and W_n a wheel of order n+1 . In this paper, we show that R(C_4, C_4, W_ n)≤ n+⌈√(4n+5)⌉ +3 for n=42, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52 or n≥ 56 . Furthermore, we prove that R(C_4, C_4, W_ℓ ^2-ℓ)≤ℓ ^2+ℓ +2 for ℓ≥ 9 , and if ℓ is a prime power, then the equality holds.

Abstract:The $r$-colour Ramsey number $R_r(k)$ is the minimum $n \in \mathbb{N}$ such that every $r$-colouring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ on $n$ vertices contains a monochromatic copy of $K_k$. We prove, for each fixed $r \geqslant 2$, that $$R_r(k) \leqslant e^{-\delta k} r^{rk}$$ for some constant $\delta = \delta(r) > 0$ and all sufficiently large $k \in \mathbb{N}$. For each $r \geqslant 3$, this is the first exponential improvement over the upper bound of Erdős and Szekeres from 1935. In the case $r = 2$, it gives a different (and significantly shorter) proof of a recent result of Campos, Griffiths, Morris and Sahasrabudhe.

Abstract:For positive integers n, r, s with r > s, the set-coloring Ramsey number R(n; r, s) is the minimum N such that if every edge of the complete graph K N receives a set of s colors from a palette of r colors, then there is guaranteed to be a monochromatic clique on n vertices, that is, a subset of n vertices where all of the edges between them receive a common color. In particular, the case s = 1 corresponds to the classical multicolor Ramsey number. We prove general upper and lower bounds on R(n; r, s) which imply that R(n; r, s) = 2 Θ(nr) if s/r is bounded away from 0 and 1. The upper bound extends an old result of Erdős and Szemerédi, who treated the case s = r − 1, while the lower bound exploits a connection to error-correcting codes. We also study the analogous problem for hypergraphs.

A canonical Ramsey theorem for even cycles in random graphs

Abstract:The celebrated canonical Ramsey theorem of Erdős and Rado implies that for $2\leq k\in \mathbb{N}$, any colouring of the edges of $K_n$ with $n$ sufficiently large gives a copy of $C_{2k}$ which has one of three canonical colour patterns: monochromatic, rainbow or lexicographic. In this paper we show that if $p=\omega(n^{-1+1/(2k-1)}\log n)$, then ${\mathbf{G}}(n,p)$ will asymptotically almost surely also have the property that any colouring of its edges induces canonical copies of $C_{2k}$. This determines the threshold for the canonical Ramsey property with respect to even cycles, up to a $\log$ factor.

Abstract:For given simple graphs H1,H2,…,Hc,the multicolor Ramsey number R(H1,H2,...,Hc)is defined as the smallest positive integer n such that for an arbitrary edge-decomposition{Gi}ci=1 of the complete graph Kn,at least one Gi has a subgraph isomorphic to Hi.Let m,n1,n2,...,nc be positive integers and Σ=Σci=1(ni-1).Some bounds and exact values of R(K1,n1,...,K1,nc,Pm)have been obtained in literature.Wang(Graphs Combin.,2020)conjec-tured that if Σ(≠)0(mod m-1)and Σ+1 ≥(m-3)2,then R(K1,n1,...,K1,nc,Pm)=Σ+m-1.In this note,we give a new lower bound and some exact values of R(K1,n1,...,K1,nc,Pm)pro-vided m ≤ Σ,Σ ≡ k(mod m-1),and 2 ≤ k ≤ m-2.These results partially confirm Wang's conjecture.

Abstract:For k given graphs G 1 , G 2 , … , G k , k ≥ 2 , the k -color Ramsey number, denoted by R ( G 1 , G 2 , … , G k ) , is the smallest integer N such that if we arbitrarily color the edges of a complete graph of order N with k colors, then it always contains a monochromatic copy of G i colored with i , for some 1 ≤ i ≤ k . Let C m be a cycle of length m and K 1 , n a star of order n + 1 . In this paper, firstly we give a general upper bound of R ( C 4 , C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) . In particular, for the 3-color case, we have R ( C 4 , C 4 , K 1 , n ) ≤ n + 4 n + 5 + 3 and this bound is tight in some sense. Furthermore, we prove that R ( C 4 , C 4 , K 1 , n ) ≤ n + 4 n + 5 + 2 for all n = ℓ 2 − ℓ and ℓ ≥ 2 , and if ℓ is a prime power, then the equality holds.
Canonical Ramsey numbers of sparse graphs

Abstract:The canonical Ramsey theorem of Erdős and Rado implies that for any graph $H$, any edge-coloring (with an arbitrary number of colors) of a sufficiently large complete graph $K_N$ contains a monochromatic, lexicographic, or rainbow copy of $H$. The least such $N$ is called the Erdős-Rado number of $H$, denoted by $ER(H)$. Erdős-Rado numbers of cliques have received considerable attention, and in this paper we extend this line of research by studying Erdős-Rado numbers of sparse graphs. For example, we prove that if $H$ has bounded degree, then $ER(H)$ is polynomial in $|V(H)|$ if $H$ is bipartite, but exponential in general. We also study the closely-related problem of constrained Ramsey numbers. For a given tree $S$ and given path $P_t$, we study the minimum $N$ such that every edge-coloring of $K_N$ contains a monochromatic copy of $S$ or a rainbow copy of $P_t$. We prove a nearly optimal upper bound for this problem, which differs from the best known lower bound by a function of inverse-Ackermann type.

Abstract:For given graphs H1,...,Hk, k≥2, the k-color Ramsey number R(H1,...,Hk) is the smallest integer N such that every k-coloring of the edges of a complete graph KN contains a monochromatic copy of Hi colored in i, for some i with 1≤i≤k. Let Cℓ,K1,m and Pn denote a cycle of length ℓ, a star of order m+1 and a path of order n, respectively. In this paper, it is shown that R(C4,K1,m,Pn)≤m+n−1+⌈m+n−2⌉ for all m,n≥2 and R(C4,K1,m,Pn)≤m+n−2+⌈m+n−2⌉ if m+n=ℓ2+3 and ℓ≥1. Moreover, by discussing the local structure of the polarity graph whose vertices are points in the projective plane over Galois fields, we show that the two upper bounds can be attained for some special m and n. These results also extend some known results on R(C4,K1,m) obtained by Parsons in 1975 and by Zhang et al. recently.
The Four-Color Ramsey Multiplicity of Triangles

Abstract:We study a generalization of a famous result of Goodman and establish that asymptotically at least a $1/256$ fraction of all triangles needs to be monochromatic in any four-coloring of the edges of a complete graph. We also show that any large enough extremal construction must be based on a blow-up of one of the two $R(3,3,3)$ Ramsey-colorings of $K_{16}$. This result is obtained through an efficient flag algebra formulation by exploiting problem-specific combinatorial symmetries that also allows us to study some related problems.

In this paper, by using algebraic and probabilistic methods, we first give two lower bounds for ( k + 1 )-color Ramsey number R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) for some special n , which shows the upper bound due to Zhang et al. (2019) is tight in some sense, and then establish a general lower bound for R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) in terms of n and k , which extends the classical result of Burr et al. (1989). Moreover, we show that R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , K 1 , n ) = R ( C 4 , … , C 4 , W n ) for sufficiently large n .

Abstract:For graphs $F_n$ and $G_n$ of order $n$, if $R(F_n, G_n)=(\chi(G_n)-1)(n-1)+\sigma(G_n)$, then $F_n$ is said to be $G_n$-good, where $\sigma(G_n)$ is the minimum size of a color class among all proper vertex-colorings of $G_n$ with $\chi(G_n)$ colors. Given $\Delta(G_n)\le \Delta$, it is shown that $P_n$ is asymptotically $G_n$-good if $\alpha(G_n)\le\frac{n}{4}$.

Abstract:Given a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ and a set of $k$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}$, the generalized Ramsey number $f(G,\mathcal{H},q)$ is the minimum number of colors needed to edge-color $G$ so that every copy of every hypergraph $H\in \mathcal{H}$ in $G$ receives at least $q$ different colors. In this note we obtain bounds, some asymptotically sharp, on several generalized Ramsey numbers, when $G=K_n$ or $G=K_{n,n}$ and $\mathcal{H}$ is a set of cycles or paths, and when $G=K_n^k$ and $\mathcal{H}$ contains a clique on $k+2$ vertices or a tight cycle.

Abstract:In this paper, we first study a new extremal problem recently posed by Conlon and Tyomkyn~(arXiv: <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2002.00921" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2002.00921">2002.00921</a>). Given a graph $H$ and an integer $k\geqslant 2$, let $f_{k}(n,H)$ be the smallest number of colors $c$ such that there exists a proper edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_{n}$ with $c$ colors containing no $k$ vertex-disjoint color-isomorphic copies of $H$. Using algebraic properties of polynomials over finite fields, we give an explicit proper edge-coloring of $K_{n}$ and show that $f_{k}(n, C_{4})=\Theta(n)$ when $k\geqslant 3$ and $n\rightarrow\infty$. The methods we used in the edge-coloring may be of some independent interest. We also consider a related generalized Ramsey problem. For given graphs $G$ and $H,$ let $r(G,H,q)$ be the minimum number of edge-colors (not necessarily proper) of $G$, such that the edges of every copy of $H\subseteq G$ together receive at least $q$ distinct colors. Establishing the relation to the Turán number of specified bipartite graphs, we obtain some general lower bounds for $r(K_{n,n},K_{s,t},q)$ with a broad range of $q$.

Degree conditions for Ramsey goodness of paths

Abstract:A classical result of Chvátal implies that if $n \geq (r-1)(t-1) +1$, then any colouring of the edges of $K_n$ in red and blue contains either a monochromatic red $K_r$ or a monochromatic blue $P_t$. We study a natural generalization of his result, determining the exact minimum degree condition for a graph $G$ on $n = (r - 1)(t - 1) + 1$ vertices which guarantees that the same Ramsey property holds in $G$. In particular, using a slight generalization of a result of Haxell, we show that $\delta(G) \geq n - \lceil t/2 \rceil$ suffices, and that this bound is best possible. We also use a classical result of Bollobás, Erdős, and Straus to prove a tight minimum degree condition in the case $r = 3$ for all $n \geq 2t - 1$.

Abstract:The celebrated canonical Ramsey theorem of Erdős and Rado implies that for a given graph $H$, if $n$ is sufficiently large then any colouring of the edges of $K_n$ gives rise to copies of $H$ that exhibit certain colour patterns, namely monochromatic, rainbow or lexicographic. We are interested in sparse random versions of this result and the threshold at which the random graph $G(n,p)$ inherits the canonical Ramsey properties of $K_n$. Our main result here pins down this threshold when we focus on colourings that are constrained by some prefixed lists. This result is applied in an accompanying work of the authors on the threshold for the canonical Ramsey property (with no list constraints) in the case that $H$ is an even cycle.
