Abstract:The Brill-Noether theory of curves plays a fundamental role in the theory of curves and their moduli and has been intensively studied since the 19th century. In contrast, Brill-Noether theory for higher dimensional varieties is less understood. It is hard to determine when Brill-Noether loci are nonempty and these loci can be reducible and of larger than the expected dimension. Let $E$ be a semistable sheaf on the projective plane. In this paper, we give an upper bound for $h^0(E)$ in terms of the rank $r$ and the slope $\mu$ of $E$. We show that the bound is achieved precisely when $E$ is a twist of a Steiner bundle. We classify the sheaves $E$ such that $h^0(E)$ is sufficiently close to the upper bound. We determine the nonemptiness, irreducibility and dimension of the Brill-Noether loci in the moduli spaces of sheaves with $h^0(E)$ in this range. When they are nonempty, these Brill-Noether loci are irreducible though almost always of larger than the expected dimension.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Brill-Noether loci for higher dimensional varieties. Let $M$ be a moduli space of coherent sheaves on $X$. The Brill-Noether loci of $M$ are the closed subsets $\{\mathcal{F} \in M : h^0(X,\mathcal{F}) \geq k+1\}$. When $X$ is a smooth curve and $M = \textbf{Pic}_X^d$, the space of degree $d$ line bundles on $X$, the Brill-Noether loci have a natural determinantal scheme structure coming from a map of vector bundles on $\textbf{Pic}_X^d$, which is the main tool in studying their geometry. In [CMR10], the authors generalize this to the case where $X$ is any variety and $M$ is the moduli space of stable vector bundles on $X$ with fixed invariants but require that $H^i(X,E) = 0$ for all $E \in M$ and $i \geq 2$. We generalize these results by showing how to give a natural determinantal scheme structure to the Brill-Noether loci for any $X$ and any $M$. In doing so we develop the theory of Fitting ideals for a complex which can be used to define natural scheme structures in other cases as well, such as the locus of points where the projective dimension of a coherent sheaf jumps up. As an application of our results, we construct moduli spaces for very ample line bundles on a variety.

Towards Brill-Noether Theory for Spectral Curves

Abstract:We investigate Brill-Noether loci of two kinds of spectral curves: double covers whose branch locus is a canonical divisor and spectral covers of the projective line. Our techniques are based on the Hitchin correspondence and Higgs bundles. For the first kind our results determine the gonality sequence, when the rank of the linear system is much smaller than the genus. For this the curve and the branch divisor are assumed to be general. In the second case we compute dimensions of the finer splitting loci if these spaces are non-empty. We compare this result with the existing literature about general curves with a fixed gonality.

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].

Abstract:Motivated by the quest to understand the analog of non-geometric flux compactification in the context of M-theory, we study higher dimensional analogs of generalized Poisson sigma models and corresponding dual string and p-brane models. We find that higher generalizations of the algebraic structures due to Dorfman, Roytenberg and Courant play an important role and establish their relation to Nambu-Poisson structures.

Abstract:We consider a class of non-linear PDE systems, whose equations possess Noether identities (the equations are redundant), including non-variational systems (not coming from Lagrangian field theories), where Noether identities and infinitesimal gauge transformations need not be in bijection. We also include theories with higher stage Noether identities, known as higher gauge theories (if they are variational). Some of these systems are known to exhibit linearization instabilities: there exist exact background solutions about which a linearized solution is extendable to a family of exact solutions only if some non-linear obstruction functionals vanish. We give a general, geometric classification of a class of these linearization obstructions, which includes as special cases all known ones for relativistic field theories (vacuum Einstein, Yang-Mills, classical N=1 supergravity, etc.). Our classification shows that obstructions arise due to the simultaneous presence of rigid cosymmetries (generalized Killing condition) and non-trivial de Rham cohomology classes (spacetime topology). The classification relies on a careful analysis of the cohomologies of the on-shell Noether complex (consistent deformations), adjoint Noether complex (rigid cosymmetries) and variational bicomplex (conserved currents). An intermediate result also gives a criterion for identifying non-linearities that do not lead to linearization instabilities.

Abstract:With a view toward a theory of fracton and embeddon in condensed matter, we introduce a higher-moment polynomial degree-(m-1) global symmetry, acting on complex scalar/vector/tensor fields. We relate this higher-moment global symmetry of $n$-dimensional space, to a lower degree (either ordinary or higher-moment, e.g., degree-(m-1-$\ell$)) subdimensional or subsystem global symmetry on layers of $(n-\ell)$-submanifolds. These submanifolds are algebraic affine varieties (i.e., solutions of polynomials). The structure of layers of submanifolds as subvarieties can be studied via mathematical tools of embedding, foliation and algebraic geometry. We also generalize Noether's theorem for this higher-moment polynomial global symmetry. We can promote the higher-moment global symmetry to a local symmetry, and derive a new family of higher-rank-m symmetric tensor gauge theory by gauging. By further gauging a discrete charge conjugation symmetry, we derive a new more general class of non-abelian rank-m tensor gauge field theory: a hybrid class of (symmetric or non-symmetric) higher-rank-m tensor gauge theory and anti-symmetric tensor topological field theory, generalizing [arXiv:1909.13879]'s theory interplaying between gapless and gapped sectors.
A higher-order generalization of group theory

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to show that fundamental concepts in higher-order Fourier analysis can be nauturally extended to the non-commutative setting. We generalize Gowers norms to arbitrary compact non-commutative groups. On the structural side, we show that nilspace theory (the algebraic part of higher-order Fourier analysis) can be naturally extended to include all non-commutative groups. To this end, we introduce generalized nilspaces called "groupspaces" and demonstrate that they possess properties very similar to nilspaces. We study $k$-th order generalizations of groups that are special groupspaces called {\it k-step} groupspaces. One step groupspaces are groups. We show that $k$-step groupspaces admit the structure of an iterated principal bundle with structure groups $G_1,G_2,\dots,G_k$. A similar, but somewhat more technical statement holds for general groupspaces, with possibly infinitely many structure groups. Structure groups of groupspaces are in some sense analogous to higher homotopy groups. In particular we use a version of the Eckmann-Hilton argument from homotopy theory to show that $G_i$ is abelian for $i\geq 2$. Groupspaces also show some similarities with $n$-groups from higher category theory (also used in physics) but the exact relationship between these concepts is a subject of future research.

Coherent sheaves and quantum Coulomb branches I: tilting bundles from integrable systems

Abstract:In this paper, we consider how the approach of Bezrukavnikov and Kaledin to understanding the categories of coherent sheaves on symplectic resolutions can be applied to the Coulomb branches introduced by Braverman, Finkelberg and Nakajima. In particular, we construct tilting generators on resolved Coulomb branches, and give explicit quiver presentations of categories of coherent sheaves on these varieties, with the wall-crossing functors described by natural bimodules.

Linear stability of coherent systems and applications to Butler's conjecture

Abstract:The notion of linear stability of a variety in projective space was introduced by Mumford in the context of GIT. It has subsequently been applied by Mistretta and others to Butler's conjecture on stability of the dual span bundle (DSB) $M_{V, E}$ of a general generated coherent system $( E, V )$. We survey recent progress in this direction on rank one coherent systems, prove a new result for hyperelliptic curves, and state some open questions. We then extend the definition of linear stability to generated coherent systems of higher rank. We show that various coherent systems with unstable DSB studied by Brambila-Paz, Mata-Gutierrez, Newstead and Ortega are also linearly unstable. We show that linearly stable coherent systems of type $(2, d, 4)$ for low enough $d$ have stable DSB, and use this to prove a particular case of a generalized Butler conjecture. We then exhibit a linearly stable generated coherent system with unstable DSB, confirming that linear stability of $( E, V )$ in general remains weaker than semistability of $M_{V, E}$ in higher rank. We end with a list of open questions on the higher rank case.

Abstract:Generalizing the continuous rank function of Barja-Pardini-Stoppino, in this paper we consider cohomological rank functions of Q-twisted (complexes of) coherent sheaves on abelian varieties. They satisfy a natural transformation formula with respect to the Fourier-Mukai-Poincare transform, which has several consequences. In many concrete geometric contexts these functions provide useful invariants.We illustrate this with two different applications, the first one to GV-subschemes and the second one to multiplication maps of global sections of ample line bundles on abelian varieties.

Abstract:This is an invited survey article on higher gauge theory for the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics, 2nd edition. In particular, we provide a lightning introduction to higher structures and to the construction of the kinematical data of higher gauge theories, i.e. connections on higher principal bundles. We also summarise the most important applications and dynamical principles that have appeared in the literature, and we close with comments on related areas.

Abstract:The paper surveys open problems and questions related to interplay between the theory of integrable systems with infinitely and finitely many degrees of freedom and Nijenhuis geometry. This text has grown out from preparatory materials for the series of research symposia and workshops on Nijenhuis geometry and integrable systems held at SMRI (Sydney) and MATRIX (Creswick) in February 2022 and at La Trobe University (Melbourne) and MATRIX in February 2024, and from the open problem sessions at these events. It includes both relatively simple questions to get familiar with the topic, as well as challenging problems that are of great importance for the field.

Abstract:We draw a parallel between the BV/BRST formalism for higher-dimensional (≥ 2) Hamiltonian mechanics and higher notions of torsion and basic curvature tensors for generalized connections in specific Lie n -algebroids based on homotopy Poisson structures. The gauge systems we consider include Poisson sigma models in any dimension and "generalised R-flux" deformations thereof, such as models with an ( n + 2)-form-twisted R-Poisson target space. Their BV/BRST action includes interaction terms among the fields, ghosts and antifields whose coefficients acquire a geometric meaning by considering twisted Koszul multibrackets that endow the target space with a structure that we call a gapped almost Lie n -algebroid. Studying covariant derivatives along n -forms, we define suitable polytorsion and basic polycurvature tensors and identify them with the interaction coefficients in the gauge theory, thus relating models for topological n -branes to differential geometry on Lie n -algebroids.

Abstract:Kazhdan and Lusztig identified the affine Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}$ with an equivariant $K$-group of the Steinberg variety, and applied this to prove the Deligne-Langlands conjecture, i.e., the local Langlands parametrization of irreducible representations of reductive groups over nonarchimedean local fields $F$ with an Iwahori-fixed vector. We apply techniques from derived algebraic geometry to pass from $K$-theory to Hochschild homology and thereby identify $\mathcal{H}$ with the endomorphisms of a coherent sheaf on the stack of unipotent Langlands parameters, the coherent Springer sheaf. As a result the derived category of $\mathcal{H}$-modules is realized as a full subcategory of coherent sheaves on this stack, confirming expectations from strong forms of the local Langlands correspondence (including recent conjectures of Fargues-Scholze, Hellmann and Zhu). In the case of the general linear group our result allows us to lift the local Langlands classification of irreducible representations to a categorical statement: we construct a full embedding of the derived category of smooth representations of $\mathrm{GL}_n(F)$ into coherent sheaves on the stack of Langlands parameters.

Abstract:Let X be a ruled surface over a nonsingular curve C of genus $g\geq0$. Let $M_H:=M_{X,H}(2;c_1,c_2)$ be the moduli space of H-stable rank 2 vector bundles E on X with fixed Chern classes $c_i:=c_i(E)$ for $i=1,2$. The main goal of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the geometry of the moduli space $M_H$ in terms of its Brill-Noether locus $W_H^k(2;c_1,c_2)$, whose points correspond to stable vector bundles in $M_H$ having at least k independent sections. We deal with the non-emptiness of this Brill-Noether locus, getting in most of the cases sharp bounds for the values of k such that $W_H^k(2;c_1,c_2)$ is non-empty.

Abstract:A fundamental problem at the confluence of algebraic geometry and representation theory is to describe the cohomology of line bundles on flag varieties over a field of characteristic p. When p=0, the solution is given by the celebrated Borel-Weil-Bott Theorem, while for p>0 the problem is widely open. In this note we describe a collection of open questions that arise from the study of particular cases of the general theory, focusing on their combinatorial and commutative algebra aspects.
