Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an optical pulse sampling method for photonic blind source separation. The photonic system processes and separates wideband signals based on the statistical information of the mixed signals and thus the sampling frequency can be orders of magnitude lower than the bandwidth of the signals. The ultra-fast optical pulse functions as a tweezer that collects samples of the signals at very low sampling rates, and each sample is short enough to maintain the statistical properties of the signals. The low sampling frequency reduces the workloads of the analog to digital conversion and digital signal processing systems. In the meantime, the short pulse sampling maintains the accuracy of the sampled signals, so the statistical properties of the undersampling signals are the same as the statistical properties of the original signals. With the optical pulses generated from a mode-locked laser, the optical pulse sampling system is able to process and separate mixed signals with bandwidth over 100GHz and achieves a dynamic range of 30dB.

Abstract:An approach to realizing wideband analog-to-digital conversion based on the techniques of photonic time stretch (PTS) and compressive sensing (CS) is proposed. In the system, a multitone signal within a wide bandwidth (spectrally sparse) signal is slowed down in the time domain by a photonic time stretcher. The stretched signal is then down-sampled and reconstructed by a random-demodulator-based CS scheme, in which random mixing is realized in an optical domain. Thanks to the techniques of PTS and CS, wideband spectrally sparse signals can be acquired with a sampling rate far below the Nyquist rate of the original signal. The optical random mixing applied in the system has the advantages of lower distortions and larger bandwidth compared to its electrical counterpart. In order to construct a Gaussian measurement matrix with zero mean, balanced detection is applied after the optical mixer. In addition, in order to eliminate the dc component and the even-order harmonics of the stretched signal, we propose to use balanced PTS technique in the system. We demonstrate that a system with a time stretch factor 20 and a compression factor 4 can effectively acquire a spectrally sparse wideband signal, which means a sampling rate as low as 1/80 of the Nyquist rate.

Abstract:Sub-sampling can acquire directly a passband within a broad radio frequency (RF) range, avoiding down-conversion and low-phase-noise tunable local oscillation (LO). However, sub-sampling suffers from band folding and self-image interference. In this paper we propose a frequency-oriented sub-sampling to solve the two problems. With ultrashort optical pulse and a pair of chromatic dispersions, the broadband RF signal is firstly short-time Fourier-transformed to a spectrum-spread pulse. Then a time slot, corresponding to the target spectrum slice, is coherently optical-sampled with in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) demodulation. We demonstrate the novel bandpass sampling by a numerical example, which shows the desired uneven intensity response, i.e. pre-filtering. We show in theory that appropriate time-stretch capacity from dispersion can result in pre-filtering bandwidth less than sampling rate. Image rejection due to I/Q sampling is also analyzed. A proof-of-concept experiment, which is based on a time-lens sampling source and chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs), shows the center-frequency-tunable pre-filtered sub-sampling with bandwidth of 6 GHz around, as well as imaging rejection larger than 26 dB. Our technique may benefit future broadband RF receivers for frequency-agile Radar or channelization.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present a photonic compressive sampling scheme based on optical sampling and random demodulation for microwave spectral analysis. A novel (to our knowledge) approach to realizing the multiplication of a pseudorandom binary sequence and the input microwave signal of interest in the optical domain is proposed, which largely simplifies the implementation of the compressive sampling. A spectrally sparse signal can be successfully captured by an electrical digitizer with a sampling rate much lower than the Nyquist rate with the help of random demodulation and the sparse reconstruction algorithm. Identification of the signals with multiple frequency components is successfully demonstrated.

Abstract:For the time-frequency overlapped signals, a low-complexity single-channel blind source separation (SBSS) algorithm is proposed in this paper. The algorithm does not only introduce the Gibbs sampling theory to separate the mixed signals, but also adopts the orthogonal triangle decomposition-M (QRD-M) to reduce the computational complexity. According to analysis and simulation results, we demonstrate that the separation performance of the proposed algorithm is similar to that of the per-survivor processing (PSP) algorithm, while its computational complexity is sharply reduced.

Abstract:In this Letter, we propose an approach to achieving photonics-enabled compressive sensing of sparse wideband radio frequency signals in which an incoherent broadband source is applied, and the mixing and integration functions are realized in the optical domain. A spectrum shaper is employed to slice and encode the spectrum of the broadband light according to a predetermined random sequence. Because of the dispersion-induced group delay, the mixing between the incoming signal and the random bit sequence is achieved. At the output of the spectrum shaper, an array of photodetectors is employed to realize down-sampling, and the input sparse signal can be captured in a single-shot mode. Since no pulsed laser is employed, our scheme obviates the need for time-domain synchronization between the repetitive ultra-fast pulses and the random sequence. Experimental demonstrations and numerical results are presented to verify the feasibility and potential of the approach.

Abstract:Blind source separation (BSS) is implemented for optical fiber sensing systems, such as the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system and the single-mode-multimode-single-mode fiber (SMS) sensing system. The FastICA, a kind of multichannel BSS algorithm, is used to get the strain and the temperature with two FBGs. For the SMS sensing, a single-channel blind source separation (SCBSS) algorithm is employed to simultaneously measure the vibration and the temperature variation with only one SMS sensor. The errors of both the FBG and the SMS optical fiber sensing system are very small with the BSS algorithm. The implementation of BSS for the optical fiber sensing makes the multiparameter measurements more easily with low cost and high accuracy and can also be applied for signal de-noising field.

Abstract:While the Nyquist rate serves as a lower bound to sample a general bandlimited signal with no information loss, the sub-Nyquist rate may also be sufficient for sampling and recovering signals under certain circumstances. Previous works on sub-Nyquist sampling achieved dimensionality reduction mainly by transforming the signal in certain ways. However, the underlying structure of the sub-Nyquist sampled signal has not yet been fully exploited. In this paper, we study the fundamental limit and the method for recovering data from the sub-Nyquist sample sequence of a linearly modulated baseband signal. In this context, the signal is not eligible for dimension reduction, which makes the information loss in sub-Nyquist sampling inevitable and turns the recovery into an under-determined linear problem. The performance limits and data recovery algorithms of two different sub-Nyquist sampling schemes are studied. First, the minimum normalized Euclidean distances for the two sampling schemes are calculated which indicate the performance upper bounds of each sampling scheme. Then, with the constraint of a finite alphabet set of the transmitted symbols, a modified time-variant Viterbi algorithm is presented for efficient data recovery from the sub-Nyquist samples. The simulated bit error rates (BERs) with different sub-Nyquist sampling schemes are compared with both their theoretical limits and their Nyquist sampling counterparts, which validates the excellent performance of the proposed data recovery algorithm.

Abstract:The influence of the residual pulse chirp and the spectrum shape from a cavity-less optical pulse source on the sampling performance is theoretically analyzed. According to the theoretical analysis, an optimization method for enlarging the operation bandwidth of a photonic sampling system based on a cavity-less ultra-short pulse source is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Through biasing the Mach-Zehnder modulator in the cavity-less optical pulse source below its quadrature point, the output spectrum flatness can be greatly improved, which is beneficial for optimizing the photonic sampling frequency response introduced by the ultrashort optical pulse train. In the experiment, the 3-dB bandwidth of the photonic sampling frequency response is increased from less than 10 GHz to more than 35 GHz by using the proposed method without sacrificing the output signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract:Compressive sensing (CS) in a photonic link has a high potential for acquisition of wideband sparse signals. In CS it is necessary to mix the input sparse signal with a pseudorandom sequence prior to subsampling. A pulse shaper with a spatial light modulator (SLM) can be used in photonic CS as an optical mixer to improve the speed of mixing. In this approach, the sparse signal is modulated on a chirped optical pulse and the pseudorandom sequence is recorded on the SLM within the pulse shaper. The optical mixing in the frequency domain is realized based on the principle of frequency-to-time mapping. In this paper, we investigate the performance and limitations of photonic CS with an SLM in detail. A theoretical model to describe optical mixing based on frequency-to-time mapping is presented. We point out that there is an upper limit on the length of the pseudorandom sequence recorded on the SLM that can be mixed with the sparse signal due to the condition of the far-field approximation of the frequency-to-time mapping. Since the length of the pseudorandom sequence is one of the major factors that affect the signal recovery performance in CS, this limitation should be fully considered in the system design of the CS with optical mixing in the frequency domain. We present numerical and experimental results to verify the theoretical findings. Discussion on the performance improvement is also presented.

Abstract:In order to break through the limitation of Electronic analog-to-digital converter in speed and time-delay precision,a wideband digital frequency measurement method based on optical sub-sampling is proposed. Taking advantage of ultrashort optical pulse from passive mode-locked fiber laser,multi-wavelength optical pulse cluster with controllable time-delay is produced. Traveling through electric-optic modulator,pulse cluster samples the signal and is detected by photodiode array,and then we could calculate the frequency spectrum in electric domain. Combined with Multiple Signal Classification algorithm (MUSIC),the method has advantage of high sampling bandwidth,accurate time-delay and Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) technology. According to theoretical research and numerical simulation result,this method is able to get high-resolution multiple frequency measurement with a bandwidth of 20GHz.

Abstract:A 10 GS/s photonic sub-sampling ADC is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The single-sideband phase noise of the optoelectronic oscillator is tested to be -128 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset and the aperture jitter of the photonic ADC is 40.3 fs with the integral interval from 1 kHz to 10 MHz. 23 GHz and 43.1 GHz signals are sampled by the system with the ENOB of 5.0 bits and 4.2 bits.

Abstract:Pulse compression technique is a particularly competitive method that enables both high spatial resolution and dynamic range in coherent radar and distributed fiber sensing systems. Up to now, the frequency bandwidths of most pulse compression techniques are restricted to tens of GHz. In this paper, we propose an all-optic sub-THz-range linearly chirped optical source and a large-bandwidth detection system to characterize it. Taking advantage of the chromatic dispersion effect, ultrashort optical pulses are stretched to be ~10 ns linearly chirped pulses with sub-THz range, which yields a large time-bandwidth product of 4500, a high compression ratio of 4167 and a chirp rate of 45 GHz/ns. The generated waveform is characterized with high precision thanks to the large detection bandwidth of linear optical sampling technique. A spatial resolution of 120 μm and an extinction ratio of 20.4 dB is demonstrated by using this technique, which paves the way for ultra-high spatial resolution and long range sensing applications such as LIDAR and optical reflectometry.
Dynamic Range Enhancement of Photonic Sampling Based on Chirp Management in Cavity-Less Optical Pulse Source

Abstract:An optimization method to improve the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of photonic sampling without sacrificing the signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It is realized by managing the chirp in the generated ultrashort optical pulse train by simply changing the group velocity dispersion (GVD) of the dispersion compensation module (DCM) in the cavity-less ultra-short optical pulse source. In the simulation, the SFDRs of the photonic sampling for the input signals in the frequency range of 0.1 GHz to 40.1 GHz are significantly improved with residual linear chirp in the optical pulse train compared with the situation that the chirp is completely compensated. In the experiment, a 10.1 GHz single-tone microwave signal is sampled and the SFDR is improved by 10.95 dB owing to the residual chirp in the optical pulse train. In addition, the SINAD is improved by 2.76 dB even though the power of the fundamental frequency signal is slightly reduced. The proposed scheme can also be applied to photonic sampling ADCs based on other optical pulse sources, which is favorable for alleviating the limitation from the nonlinearity of the electro-optic amplitude modulator.
Sub-Nyquist Sampling Boosts Targeted Light Transport Through Opaque Scattering Media.

Abstract:Optical time-reversal techniques are being actively developed to focus light through or inside opaque scattering media. When applied to biological tissue, these techniques promise to revolutionize biophotonics by enabling deep-tissue non-invasive optical imaging, optogenetics, optical tweezing, and phototherapy. In all previous optical time-reversal experiments, the scattered light field was well-sampled during wavefront measurement and wavefront reconstruction, following the Nyquist sampling criterion. Here, we overturn this conventional practice by demonstrating that even when the scattered field is under-sampled, light can still be focused through or inside scattering media. Even more surprisingly, we show both theoretically and experimentally that the focus achieved by under-sampling can be one order of magnitude brighter than that achieved under the well-sampling conditions used in previous works, where 3×3 to 5×5 pixels were used to sample one speckle grain on average. Moreover, sub-Nyquist sampling improves the signal-to-noise ratio and the collection efficiency of the scattered light. We anticipate that this newly explored under-sampling scheme will transform the understanding of optical time reversal and boost the performance of optical imaging, manipulation, and communication through opaque scattering media.

Abstract:A novel and practical compressive sampling system is proposed based on optical mixing and direct detection and our system is established with a multi-wavelength source, two intensity modulators, an electric M-sequence generator, and multiple photodetectors. In experiment, a compressive sampling system of two channels is set up, which is fIrstly reported, and the predefIned signal including two narrow-band components is recovered successfully for 2.55GHz bandwidth.

Abstract:Featured Application The proposed real-time eye diagram monitoring method has potential applications in modern optical communications and cloud computations. A real-time eye diagram monitoring method for optical signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on optical sampling. In the system, the optical signals under test are directly sampled by an optical sampling pulse train with a narrow pulse width and a high repetition frequency. The sampling pulse train is achieved in a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), gated on-off by an electrical pulse. The sampled optical signals are then broadened and detected by a photodetector (PD). A low-speed electrical analog-to-digital converter (ADC) will then quantify the detected electrical signals. Combining with an algorithm based on the infinitesimal calculus, the quantified data is then used to achieve the eye diagram, according to which more time-domain parameters, such as period, time jitter, Q value, and bit error rate (BER) for the optical signals under test, are obtained. Thanks to the high repetition rate of the optical sampling pulse train, the eye diagram and the time-domain parameters of the optical signals are observed in real time. Experimental results show that a real time of about 350-mu s eye diagram monitoring for a 2.5-Gb/s optical signal with a dynamic range from -10 to -22 dBm is achieved. In addition, time jitters are measured to range from 4.3 to 49.8 ps. Q values are estimated to range from 20.4 to 4.3, corresponding to BERs ranging from 2.3 x 10(-92) to 8.5 x 10(-6). The results are also verified by a commercial real-time oscilloscope.
