Abstract:We establish several extensions of the well-known Garden of Eden theorem for non-uniform cellular automata over the full shifts and over amenable group universes. In particular, our results describe quantitatively the relations between the partial pre-injectivity and the size of the image of a non-uniform cellular automata. A strengthened surjunctivity result is also obtained for multi-dimensional cellular automata over strongly irreducible subshifts of finite type.

Abstract:We prove the Garden of Eden theorem for cellular automata with finite set of states and finite neighbourhood on right amenable left homogeneous spaces with finite stabilisers. It states that the global transition function of such an automaton is surjective if and only if it is pre-injective. Pre-Injectivity means that two global configurations that differ at most on a finite subset and have the same image under the global transition function must be identical.

Abstract:In this paper, some complex dynamics of one equivalence class of elementary cellular automata are characterized via symbolic dynamics on the space of bi-infinite symbolic sequences. By establishing a topologically conjugate relationship with a 2-order subshift of finite type of symbolic dynamical systems, it is rigorously proved that the four rules N=119, 63, 17, and 3 are topologically mixing on their global attractors. Meanwhile, it is shown that they are chaotic both in the sense of Li-Yorke and Devaney on their global attractors. Furthermore, the topological entropies of these rules on Sigma2 are computed.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamical behaviors of Chua's Bernoulli-shift rule 56 are investigated from the viewpoint of symbolic dynamics on the bi-infinite sequence space. It is shown that rule 56, a member of 'Wolfram's class II, defines two chaotic dynamical subsystems and possesses very rich and complicated dynamical properties. In addition, the topological entropy of rule 56 is calculated on its subsystems and the global attractor of rule 56 is characterized. Meanwhile, the isles of Eden of rule 56 are explored for some finite length of binary strings, which reveal its Bernoulli characteristics. The method presented in this work is also applicable to studying the dynamics of subsystems of other rules, especially the 112 Bernoulli-shift rules of the elementary cellular automata.

Abstract:In this paper, the complex dynamical behaviors of one dimensional cellular automata rule 11, which is a Bernoulli sigmatau-shift rule, are investigated from the viewpoint of symbolic dynamics. Based on the dynamical properties of subshift of finite type and the relationship between subshift and quasi-subshift, it is strictly proved that rule 11 is topologically mixing on its two subsystems. At the same time, the topological entropies of rule 11 are calculated on the two subsystems, respectively. Conclusively, rule 11 holds rich and complicated dynamical behaviors. For example, it is chaotic in the sense of Li-Yorke and Devaney.

Abstract:The Garden of Eden theorem is a fundamental result in the theory of cellular automata, which establishes a necessary and sufficient condition for the surjectivity of a cellular automaton with a finite alphabet over an amenable group. Specifically, the theorem states that such an automaton is surjective if and only if it is pre-injective, where pre-injectivity requires that any two almost equal configurations with the same image under the automaton must be equal. This paper focuses on establishing the Garden of Eden theorem over a -cellular automaton by demonstrating both Moore theorem and Myhill theorem over -cellular automata are true. These results have significant implications for the theoretical framework of the Garden of Eden theorem and its applicability across diverse groups or altered versions of the same group. Overall, this paper provides a more comprehensive study of -cellular automata and extends the Garden of Eden theorem to a broader class of automata.

Abstract:Suppose $\tau$ is a cellular automaton over an amenable group and a finite alphabet. Celebrated Garden of Eden theorem states, that pre-injectivity of $\tau$ is equivalent to non-existence of Garden of Eden configuration. In this paper we will prove, that imposing some mild restrictions, we could add another equivalent assertion: non-existence of Garden of Eden configuration is equivalent to preservation of asymptotic Kolmogorov complexity under the action of cellular automaton. It yields a characterisation of the cellular automata, which preserve the asymptotic Kolmogorov complexity.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

It had already been conjectured in that amenability could be characterized by cellular automata. We prove the first part of that conjecture.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a countable abelian group and $f \in \Z[\Gamma]$, where $\Z[\Gamma]$ denotes the integral group ring of $\Gamma$. Consider the Pontryagin dual $X_f$ of the cyclic $\Z[\Gamma]$-module $\Z[\Gamma]/\Z[\Gamma] f$ and suppose that the natural action of $\Gamma$ on $X_f$ is expansive and that $X_f$ is connected. We prove that if $\tau \colon X_f \to X_f$ is a $\Gamma$-equivariant continuous map, then $\tau$ is surjective if and only if the restriction of $\tau$ to each $\Gamma$-homoclinicity class is injective. This is an analogue of the classical Garden of Eden theorem of Moore and Myhill for cellular automata with finite alphabet over $\Gamma$.

Abstract:The sets of $\cB$-free integers are considered with respect to (reversing) symmetries. It is well known that, for a large class of them, the centraliser of the associated $\cB$-free shift (otherwise known as its automorphism group) is trivial. We extend this result to the full centraliser, which effectively means to show that all self-homeomorphisms of the $\cB$-free shift that commute with some power of the shift are shifts themselves. This also leads to the result that the full normaliser agrees with the normaliser for this class, which is the semi-direct product of the centraliser with the cyclic group of order two generated by reflection.

Invariant measures for $\mathscr{B}$-free systems revisited

Abstract:For $ \mathscr{B} \subseteq \mathbb{N} $, the $ \mathscr{B} $-free subshift $ X_{\eta} $ is the orbit closure of the characteristic function of the set of $ \mathscr{B} $-free integers. We show that many results about invariant measures and entropy, previously only known for the hereditary closure of $ X_{\eta} $, have their analogues for $ X_{\eta} $ as well. In particular, we settle in the affirmative a conjecture of Keller about a description of such measures ([Keller, G. Generalized heredity in $\mathcal B$-free systems. Stoch. Dyn. 21, 3 (2021), Paper No. 2140008]). A central assumption in our work is that $ \eta^{*} $ (the Toeplitz sequence that generates the unique minimal component of $ X_{\eta} $) is regular. From this we obtain natural periodic approximations that we frequently use in our proofs to bound the elements in $ X_{\eta} $ from above and below.

Finding lower bounds on the growth and entropy of subshifts over countable groups

Abstract:We give a lower bound on the growth of a subshift based on a simple condition on the set of forbidden patterns defining that subshift. Aubrun et Al. showed a similar result based on the Lovász Local Lemma for subshift over any countable group and Bernshteyn extended their approach to deduce, amongst other things, some lower bound on the exponential growth of the subshift. However, our result has a simpler proof, is easier to use for applications, and provides better bounds on the applications from their articles (although it is not clear that our result is stronger in general). In the particular case of subshift over $\mathbb{Z}$ a similar but weaker condition given by Miller was known to imply nonemptiness of the associated shift. Pavlov used the same approach to provide a condition that implied exponential growth. We provide a version of our result for this particular setting and it is provably strictly stronger than the result of Pavlov and the result of Miller (and, in practice, leads to considerable improvement in the applications). We also apply our two results to a few different problems including strongly aperiodic subshifts, nonrepetitive subshifts, and Kolmogorov complexity of subshifts.

Abstract:We obtain the following embedding theorem for symbolic dynamical systems. Let G be a countable amenable group with the comparison property. Let X be a strongly aperiodic subshift over G. Let Y be a strongly irreducible shift of finite type over G that has no global period, meaning that the shift action is faithful on Y. If the topological entropy of X is strictly less than that of Y and Y contains at least one factor of X, then X embeds into Y. This result partially extends the classical result of Krieger when and the results of Lightwood when for . The proof relies on recent developments in the theory of tilings and quasi-tilings of amenable groups.

Abstract:We show that the maximal shifts in the minimal free resolution of the quotients of a polynomial ring by a monomial ideal are subadditive as a function of the homological degree. This answers a question that has received some attention in recent years. To do so, we define and study a new model for the homology of posets, given by the so called synor complex. We also introduce an Eilenberg-Zilber type shuffle product on the simplicial chain complex of lattices.

Abstract:We prove a converse to Myhill's "Garden-of-Eden" theorem and obtain in this manner a characterization of amenability in terms of cellular automata: "A group $G$ is amenable if and only if every cellular automaton with carrier $G$ that has gardens of Eden also has mutually erasable patterns." This answers a question by Schupp, and solves a conjecture by Ceccherini-Silberstein, Machì and Scarabotti. An appendix by Dawid Kielak proves that group rings without zero divisors are Ore domains precisely when the group is amenable, answering a conjecture attributed to Guba.
