Abstract:We establish criteria for the spectrum of a generalized indefinite string to be purely discrete and to satisfy Schatten-von Neumann properties. The results can be applied to the isospectral problem associated with the conservative Camassa-Holm flow and to Schrödinger operators with $\delta'$-interactions.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the spectral problem regarding generalized indefinite strings. Specifically, the authors aim to establish conditions to determine whether the spectrum of a generalized indefinite string is completely discrete (i.e., consists of isolated eigenvalues with no finite accumulation points), or satisfies the Schatten - von Neumann property, that is, for some positive number \(p\), the spectrum satisfies the following condition:
\[
\sum_{\lambda \in \sigma} \frac{1}{|\lambda|^p} < \infty
\]
The main results in the paper provide a complete characterization of when a generalized indefinite string has a completely discrete spectrum or satisfies the above - mentioned condition. These problems have been known in the case of Krein strings since the late 1950s, but when the positivity assumption is removed, the problems become more complicated. For example, for 2×2 canonical systems, the criteria for discreteness were only recently found by Romanov and Woracek.
The paper solves these problems by introducing quadratic operator pencils related to generalized indefinite strings and using previous research results on integral operators. These methods not only provide new criteria for the discreteness of generalized indefinite strings but also provide an alternative method for the discreteness of 2×2 canonical systems. In addition, the paper also applies these results to the isospectral problem of the conservative Camassa - Holm flow and the one - dimensional Hamiltonian with \(\delta'\)-interactions.
