Abstract:We give an alternative proof that an injective factor on a Hilbert space with trivial bicentralizer is ITPFI. Our proof is given in parallel with each type of factors and it is based on the strategy of Haagerup. As a consequence, the uniqueness theorem of injective factors except type III$_0$ follows from Araki-Woods' result.

Abstract:It is shown that a ring is left semihereditary if and only each homomorphic image of its injective hull as left module is FP-injective. It is also proven that a commutative ring R is reduced and arithmetical if and only if E/U if FP-injective for any FP-injective R-module E and for any submodule U of finite Goldie dimension. A characterization of commutative rings for which each module of finite Goldie dimension is of injective dimension at most one is given. Let R be a chain ring and Z its subset of zerodivisors. It is proven that E/U is FP-injective for each FP-injective R-module E and each pure polyserial submodule U of E if R/I is complete in its f.c. topology for each ideal I whose the top prime ideal is Z. The converse holds if each indecomposable injective module whose the bottom prime ideal is Z contains a pure uniserial submodule. For some chain ring R we show that E/U is FP-injective for any FP-injective module E and any its submodule U of finite Goldie dimension, even if R is not coherent. It follows that any Archimedean chain ring is either coherent or maximal if and only if each factor of any injective module of finite Goldie dimension modulo a pure submodule is injective.

Abstract:In 1967, Kadison asked "if $N$ is a subfactor of the factor $M$ for which $N' \cap M$ consists of scalars, will some maximal abelian *-subalgebra of $N$ be a maximal abelian subalgebra of $M$?". Generalizing a theorem of Popa in the type $\mathrm{II}$ case (1981), we solve Kadison's problem for all subfactors with expectation $N \subset M$ where $N$ is either a type $\mathrm{III}_\lambda$ factor with $0 \leq \lambda < 1$ or a type $\mathrm{III}_1$ factor that satisfies Connes's bicentralizer conjecture. Our solution is based on a new explicit formula for the bicentralizer algebras of arbitrary inclusions. This formula implies a type $\mathrm{III}$ analog of Popa's local quantization principle. We generalize Haaegrup's theorem from 1984 by connecting the relative bicentralizer conjecture to the Dixmier property. Finally, we prove this conjecture for a large class of inclusions and we prove an ergodicity theorem for the bicentralizer flow. We also give applications of our methods to $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors, including a new characterization of Ozawa's W*-Akemann-Ostrand property.

Abstract:Using Baire category techniques we prove that Araki-Woods factors are not classifiable by countable structures. As a result, we obtain a far reaching strengthening as well as a new proof of the well-known theorem of Woods that the isomorphism problem for ITPFI factors is not smooth. We derive as a consequence that the odometer actions of Z that preserve the measure class of a finite non-atomic product measure are not classifiable up to orbit equivalence by countable structures.

Existential closedeness and the structure of bimodules of II$_1$ factors

Abstract:We prove that if a separable II$_1$ factor $M$ is existentially closed, then every $M$-bimodule is weakly contained in the trivial $M$-bimodule, $\text{L}^2(M)$, and, equivalently, every normal completely positive map on $M$ is a pointwise 2-norm limit of maps of the form $x\mapsto\sum_{i=1}^ka_i^*xa_i$, for some $k\in\mathbb N$ and $(a_i)_{i=1}^k\subset M$. This provides the first examples of non-hyperfinite separable II$_1$ factors $M$ with the latter properties. We also obtain new characterizations of $M$-bimodules which are weakly contained in the trivial or coarse $M$-bimodule and of relative amenability inside $M$. Additionally, we give an operator algebraic presentation of the proof of the existence of existentially closed II$_1$ factors. While existentially closed II$_1$ factors have property Gamma, by adapting this proof we construct non-Gamma II$_1$ factors which are existentially closed in every weakly coarse extension.

We give conditions for separability of the model, pointing out existing parallels to the real case. Abstract:We construct a large new family of simple modules over Takiff $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$. We prove that the quotient of the universal enveloping algebra of the Takiff Lie algebra for $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$ by the ideal generated by a non-trivial central character is a simple algebra. In the case of the trivial central character, we show that the corresponding ideal is primitive by explicitly constructing a simple module whose annihilator coincides with that ideal. Together with the annihilators of simple $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$-modules, we expect that the above ideals exhaust all primitive ideal.

Abstract:Given a graded complete intersection ideal $J = (f_1, \dots, f_c) \subseteq k[x_0, \dots, x_n] = S$, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $p > 0$ such that $[k:k^p] < \infty$, we show that if $S/J$ has an isolated non-F-pure point then the Frobenius action on top local cohomology $H^{n+1-c}_\mathfrak{m}(S/J)$ is injective in sufficiently negative degrees, and we compute the least degree of any kernel element. If $S/J$ has an isolated singularity, we are also able to give an effective bound on $p$ ensuring the Frobenius action on $H^{n+1-c}_\mathfrak{m}(S/J)$ is injective in all negative degrees, extending a result of Bhatt and Singh in the hypersurface case.

Abstract:We consider various statements that characterize the hyperfinite II$_1$ factors amongst embeddable II$_1$ factors in the non-embeddable situation. In particular, we show that "generically" a II$_1$ factor has the Jung property (which states that every embedding of itself into its ultrapower is unitarily conjugate to the diagonal embedding) if and only if it is self-tracially stable (which says that every such embedding has an approximate lifting). We prove that the enforceable factor, should it exist, has these equivalent properties. Our techniques are model-theoretic in nature. We also show how these techniques can be used to give new proofs that the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor has the aforementioned properties.

Abstract:A ring R is called left IP-injective if every homomorphism from a left ideal of R into R with principal image is given by right Multiplication by an element of R. It is shown that R is left IP-injective if and only if R is left P-injective and left GIN (i.e., r(I boolean AND K) = r(I) + r(K) for each pair of left ideals I and K of R with I principal). We prove that R is QF if and only if R is right noetherian and left IP-injective if and only if R is left perfect, left GIN and right simple-injective. We also show that, for a right CF left GIN-ring R, R is QF if and only if Soc(R(R)) subset of or equal to Soc(R(R)). Two examples are given to show that an IP-injective ring need not be self-injective and a right IP-injective ring is not necessarily left IP-injective respectively.

Abstract:The factorizable vectors of a complete Boolean algebra of type I factors, acting on a separable Hilbert space, are shown to be total, resolving a conjecture of Araki and Woods. En route, the spectral theory of noise-type Boolean algebras of Tsirelson is cast in the noncommutative language of "factorizations with unit" for which a muti-layered characterization of being "of Fock type" is provided.

Abstract:For every $n\in \mathbb{N}$ we obtain a separable II$_1$ factor $M$ and a maximally abelian subalgebra $A\subset M$ such that the space of maximally amenable extensions of $A$ in $M$ is affinely identified with the $n$ dimensional $\mathbb{R}$-simplex. This moreover yields first examples of masas in II$_1$ factors $A\subset M$ admitting exactly $n$ maximally amenable factorial extensions. Our examples of such $M$ are group von Neumann algebras of free products of lamplighter groups amalgamated over the acting group. A conceptual ingredient that goes into obtaining this result is a simultaneous relative asymptotic orthogonality property, extending prior works in the literature. The proof uses technical tools including our uniform-flattening strategy for commutants in ultrapowers of II$_1$ factors.

Uniqueness of extremal almost periodic states on the injective type III$_{1}$ factor

Abstract:Let $R_\infty$ denote the Araki--Woods factor -- the unique separable injective type III$_{1}$ factor. For extremal almost periodic states $\varphi, \psi\in (R_\infty)_*$, we show that if $\Delta_\varphi$ and $\Delta_\psi$ have the same point spectrum then $\psi = \varphi\circ \alpha$ for some $\alpha\in $ Aut$(R_\infty)$. Consequently, the extremal almost periodic states on $R_\infty$ are parameterized by countable dense subgroups of $\mathbb{R}_+$, up to precomposition by automorphisms. As an application, we show that KMS states for generalized gauge actions on Cuntz algebras agree (up to an automorphism) with tensor products of Powers states on their von Neumann completions.

Injectivity theorems and cubical descent for schemes, stacks, and analytic spaces

Abstract:We prove relative injectivity, torsion-freeness, and vanishing theorems for generalized normal crossing pairs on schemes, algebraic stacks, formal schemes, semianalytic germs of complex analytic spaces, rigid analytic spaces, Berkovich spaces, and adic spaces locally of weakly finite type over a field, all in equal characteristic zero. We give a uniform proof for all these theorems in all the categories of spaces mentioned above, which were previously only known for varieties and complex analytic spaces due to work of Ambro and Fujino. Ambro and Fujino's results are integral in the proofs of the fundamental theorems of the minimal model program for (semi-)log canonical pairs and the theory of quasi-log structures. Our results resolve a significant barrier to extending these results on (semi-)log canonical pairs and quasi-log structures beyond the setting of varieties and complex analytic spaces. In order to prove our most general injectivity theorems, we generalize to all these categories of spaces a criterion due to Guillén and Navarro Aznar characterizing when functors defined on smooth varieties extend to all varieties. This extension result uses cubical hyperresolutions, which we construct in all categories of spaces mentioned above. Our extension result is very general and is of independent interest. We use this extension result to prove our injectivity theorems for generalized normal crossing pairs. We also apply our extension result to develop the theoretical foundations for the Deligne-Du Bois complex in these categories of spaces and to construct a weight filtration on the (pro-)étale cohomology of schemes and rigid analytic spaces. These results establish some aspects of Deligne-Hodge theory in all categories of spaces mentioned above.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $p > 0$ such that $[k:k^p] < \infty$ and let $f \in R = k[x_0, ..., x_n]$ be homogeneous of degree $d$. We obtain a sharp bound on the degrees in which the Frobenius action on $H^n_\mathfrak{m}(R/fR)$ can be injective when $R/fR$ has an isolated non-F-pure point at $\mathfrak{m}$. As a corollary, we show that if $(R/fR)_\mathfrak{m}$ is not F-pure then $R/fR$ has an isolated non-F-pure point at $\mathfrak{m}$ if and only if the Frobenius action is injective in degrees $\le -n(d-1)$.

Abstract:We show that the operator Hilbert space OH introduced by Pisier embeds into the predual of the hyerfinite III1 factor. The main new tool is a Khintchine type inequality for the generators of the CAR algebra with respect to a quasi-free state. Our approach yields a Khintchine type inequality for the q-gaussian variables for all values q between -1 and 1. These results are closely related to recent results of Pisier and Shlyakhtenko in the free case.

Abstract:Let $X={\rm Spec}\: B$ be a factorial affine variety defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero with a nontrivial action of the additive group $G_a$ associated to a locally nilpotent derivation $\delta$ on $B$. Suppose that $A={\rm Ker}\: \delta$ is an affine $k$-domain. The quotient morphism $\pi : X \to Y={\rm \Spec}\: A$ splits to a composite ${\rm pr} \circ p$ of the projection ${\rm pr} : Y\times \mathbb A^1 \to Y$ and a $G_a$-equivariant birational morphism $p : X \to Y\times \mathbb A^1$ where $G_a$ acts on $\mathbb A^1$ by translation. In this article, we study $X$ of dimension $\ge 3$ under the assumption that the plinth ideal $\delta(B)\cap A$ is a principal ideal generated by a non-unit element $a$ of $A$. By decomposing $p : X \to Y\times \mathbb A^1$ to a sequence of $G_a$-equivariant affine modifications, we investigate the structure of $X$. We show in algebraic way that the general closed fiber of $\pi$ over the closed set $V(a)$ of $Y$ consists of a disjoint union of affine lines. The $G_a$-action on $X$ and the fixed-point locus $X^{G_a}$ are studied with particular interest.

Abstract:For every lc-trivial fibration $(X,\Delta) \to Z$ from an lc pair, we prove that after a base change, there exists a positive integer $n$, depending only on the dimension of $X$, the Cartier index of $K_{X}+\Delta$, and the sufficiently general fibers of $X \to Z$, such that $n(K_{X}+\Delta)$ is linearly equivalent to the pullback of a Cartier divisor.
