Abstract:This paper discusses the extension of the Prototype Verification System (PVS) sub-theory for rings, part of the PVS algebra theory, with theorems related to the division algorithm for Euclidean rings and Unique Factorization Domains that are general structures where an analog of the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic holds. First, we formalize the general abstract notions of divisibility, prime, and irreducible elements in commutative rings, essential to deal with unique factorization domains. Then, we formalize the landmark theorem, establishing that every principal ideal domain is a unique factorization domain. Finally, we specify the theory of Euclidean domains and formally verify that the rings of integers, the Gaussian integers, and arbitrary fields are Euclidean domains. To highlight the benefits of such a general abstract discipline of formalization, we specify a Euclidean gcd algorithm for Euclidean domains and formalize its correctness. Also, we show how this correctness is inherited under adequate parameterizations for the structures of integers and Gaussian integers.

Factorization theory: From commutative to noncommutative settings

Abstract:We study the non-uniqueness of factorizations of non zero-divisors into atoms (irreducibles) in noncommutative rings. To do so, we extend concepts from the commutative theory of non-unique factorizations to a noncommutative setting. Several notions of factorizations as well as distances between them are introduced. In addition, arithmetical invariants characterizing the non-uniqueness of factorizations such as the catenary degree, the $\omega$-invariant, and the tame degree, are extended from commutative to noncommutative settings. We introduce the concept of a cancellative semigroup being permutably factorial, and characterize this property by means of corresponding catenary and tame degrees. Also, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for there to be a weak transfer homomorphism from a cancellative semigroup to its reduced abelianization. Applying the abstract machinery we develop, we determine various catenary degrees for classical maximal orders in central simple algebras over global fields by using a natural transfer homomorphism to a monoid of zero-sum sequences over a ray class group. We also determine catenary degrees and the permutable tame degree for the semigroup of non zero-divisors of the ring of $n \times n$ upper triangular matrices over a commutative domain using a weak transfer homomorphism to a commutative semigroup.

Abstract:$\DeclareMathOperator{\Int}{Int}\DeclareMathOperator{\IntR}{Int{}^\text{R}}$For a domain $D$, the ring $\Int(D)$ of integer-valued polynomials over $D$ is atomic if $D$ satisfies the ascending chain condition on principal ideals. However, even for a discrete valuation domain $V$, the ring $\IntR(V)$ of integer-valued rational functions over $V$ is antimatter. We introduce a family of atomic rings of integer-valued rational functions and study various factorization properties on these rings.

Abstract:Given a certain factorization property of a ring $R$, we can ask if this property extends to the polynomial ring over $R$ or vice versa. For example, it is well known that $R$ is a unique factorization domain if and only if $R[X]$ is a unique factorization domain. If $R$ is not a domain, this is no longer true. In this paper we survey unique factorization in commutative rings with zero divisors, and characterize when a polynomial ring over an arbitrary commutative ring has unique factorization.

A Note on Unique Factorization in Superrings

Abstract:In the realm of supercommutative superrings, this article investigates the unique factorization of elements. We build upon recent findings by Naser et. al. concerning similar results in noncommutative symmetric rings with zerodivisors, delving deeper into the ramifications. Strikingly, we demonstrate that any unique factorization superdomain necessarily takes the form of a superfield, further characterizing them as Artinian superrings with Krull superdimension 0 | d. Furthermore, we discover that a straightforward analogue of the well-known Auslander-Buchsbaum Theorem does not hold true in the supercommutative setting.

Abstract:In this paper we study the concept of radical factorization in the context of abstract ideal theory in order to obtain a unified approach to the theory of factorization into radical ideals and elements in the literature of commutative rings, monoids and ideal systems. Using this approach we derive new characterizations of classes of rings whose ideals are a product of radical ideals, and we obtain also similar characterizations for classes of ideal systems in monoids and star ideals in integral domains.

Abstract:Let D be a Krull domain admitting a prime element with finite residue field and let K be its quotient field. We show that for all positive integers k and , there exists an integer-valued polynomial on D , that is, an element of , which has precisely k essentially different factorizations into irreducible elements of whose lengths are exactly . Using this, we characterize lengths of factorizations when D is a unique factorization domain and therefore also in case D is a discrete valuation domain. This solves an open problem proposed by Cahen, Fontana, Frisch, and Glaz.

Abstract:For an integral domain $R$ and a commutative cancellative monoid $M$, the ring consisting of all polynomial expressions with coefficients in $R$ and exponents in $M$ is called the monoid ring of $M$ over $R$. An integral domain is called atomic if every nonzero nonunit element can be written as a product of irreducibles. In the investigation of the atomicity of integral domains, the building blocks are the irreducible elements. Thus, tools to prove irreducibility are crucial to study atomicity. In the first part of this paper, we extend Gauss's Lemma and Eisenstein's Criterion from polynomial rings to monoid rings. An integral domain $R$ is called half-factorial (or an HFD) if any two factorizations of a nonzero nonunit element of $R$ have the same number of irreducible elements (counting repetitions). In the second part of this paper, we determine which monoid algebras with nonnegative rational exponents are Dedekind domains, Euclidean domains, PIDs, UFDs, and HFDs. As a side result, we characterize the submonoids of $(\mathbb{Q}_{\ge 0},+)$ satisfying a dual notion of half-factoriality known as other-half-factoriality.

Abstract:We prove that if f is a transcendental entire function and the set of all finite singularities of its inverse function f(-1) is bounded, then f(z) + P(z) is prime for any nonconstant polynomial P(z), unless f(z) and P(z) has a nonlinear common right factor. Abstract:In this article, using only elementary knowledge of complex numbers, we sketch a proof of the celebrated Abel--Ruffini theorem, which states that the general solution to an algebraic equation of degree five or more cannot be written using radicals, that is, using its coefficients and arithmetic operations $+,-,\times,÷,$ and $\sqrt{\ }$. The present article is written purposely with concise and pedagogical terms and dedicated to students and researchers not familiar with Galois theory, or even group theory in general, which are the usual tools used to prove this remarkable theorem. In particular, the proof is self-contained and gives some insight as to why formulae exist for equations of degree four or less (and how they are constructed), and why they do not for degree five or more.

Abstract:Under the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, any integer n > 1 can be uniquely written as a product of prime powers p a ; factoring each exponent a as a product of prime powers q b , and so on, one will obtain what is called the tower factorization of n . Here, given an integer n > 1, we study its height h ( n ), that is, the number of "floors" in its tower factorization. In particular, given a fixed integer k≥1 , we provide a formula for the density of the set of integers n with h ( n ) = k . This allows us to estimate the number of floors that a positive integer will have on average. We also show that there exist arbitrarily long sequences of consecutive integers with arbitrarily large heights.

An elementary proof of the theorem on the imaginary quadratic fields with class number 1

Abstract:Let $D$ be a square-free integer other than 1. Let $K$ be the quadratic field ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt D)$. Let $\delta \in \{1,2\}$ with $\delta=2$ if $D\equiv 1 \pmod 4$. To each prime ideal $\mathcal P$ in $K$ that splits in $K/\mathbb Q$ we associate a binary quadratic form $f_{\mathcal P}$ and show that when $K$ is imaginary then $\mathcal P$ is principal if and only if $f_{\mathcal P}$ represents $\delta^2$, and when $K$ is real then $\mathcal P$ is principal if and only if $f_{\mathcal P}$ represents $\pm \delta^2$. As an application of this result we obtain an elementary proof of the well-known theorem on the imaginary quadratic fields with class number 1. The proof reveals some new information regarding necessary conditions for an imaginary quadratic field to have class number 1 when $D\equiv 1 \pmod 4$.

Abstract:Using subresultants, we modify a recent real-algebraic proof due to Eisermann of the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra ([FTA]) to obtain the following quantitative information: in order to prove the [FTA] for polynomials of degree $d$, the Intermediate Value Theorem ([IVT]) is requested to hold for real polynomials of degree at most $d^2$. We also explain that the classical proof due to Laplace requires [IVT] for real polynomials of exponential degree. These quantitative results highlight the difference in nature of these two proofs.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of multiplicatively closed subsets of a commutative ring $R$ which split an $R$-module $M$ and study factorization properties of elements of $M$ with respect to such a set. Also we demonstrate how one can utilize this concept to investigate factorization properties of $R$ and deduce some Nagata type theorems relating factorization properties of $R$ to those of its localizations, when $R$ is an integral domain.

Abstract:In 2020, Cossu and Zanardo raised a conjecture on the idempotent factorization on singular matrices in the form $\begin{pmatrix} p&z\\ \bar{z}&\sfrac{\lVert z\rVert}{p} \end{pmatrix},$ where $p$ is a prime integer which is irreducible but not prime element in the ring of integers $\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{D}]$ and $z\in\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{D}]$ such that $\langle p,z\rangle$ is a non-principal ideal. In this paper, we provide some classes of matrices that affirm the conjecture and some classes of matrices that oppose the conjecture. We further show that there are matrices in the above form that can not be written as a product of two idempotent matrices.
