Abstract:It is the main objective of this paper to show a vanishing result for cuspidal cohomology of arithmetic groups in classical groups~$G$ defined over some number field~$k$.Our approach relies on the fact that cuspidal automorphic forms are nonsingular in the sense of Howe. This result puts a strong constraint on the (archimedean components of) irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of $G$that can possibly contribute to the cuspidal cohomology. Combining this with the classification of Vogan-Zuckerman of unitary representations with nonzero cohomologyprovides a constant $r_0(G/k)$, only depending on $G/k$, below which the cuspidal cohomology vanishes. We will give a formula for this constant for each classical group of type (I) in the classification scheme due to Weil. We conclude with making this result explicit for some split classical groups over a totally real algebraic number field.

Abstract:For any given positive integer m we construct certain totally positive algebraic integers of a real bi-quadratic field K and obtain some necessary conditions for which cannot be represented as sum of integral squares. We show this for integers that lie in quadratic subfields of K and for integers which are in K but not in any quadratic subfield of K . We provide examples in tabular form for each case to corroborate the results.

Abstract:The periodic points of the algebraic function defined by the equation are shown to be expressible in terms of values of Ramanujan's cubic continued fraction with arguments in an imaginary quadratic field K in which the prime 3 splits. If lies in an order of conductor f in K and , then one of these periodic points is c ( w /3), which is shown to generate the ring class field of conductor 2 f over K .

Abstract:Let F be a finite field of q elements. In this paper we obtain several estimates on character sums derived from the Riemann hypothesis for curves over F. In particular, we establish an estimate on twisted generalized Kloosterman sums as conjectured by P. Deligne (1977, “Cohomologieétale (SGA 4½),” Lecture Notes in Mathemmatics, Vol. 569, Springer-Verlag, Berlin/Heidelberg/New York) for the case n = 2: |Σx ∈ N2 χ(x) ψ(x)| ≤ 2q1/2 for all nontrivial characters (χ, ψ) of N2 × F2. Here F2 is a quadratic extension of F and N2 consists of norm 1 (to F) elements in F2. We also present new constructions of Ramanujan graphs based on abelian groups. The character sum estimates are used to prove that these are indeed Ramanujan graphs.
Integers expressible as the sum of two rational cubes

Abstract:We prove that a positive proportion of integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not so expressible, thus proving a conjecture of Davenport. More generally, we prove that a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family have rank 0, and a positive proportion (in fact, at least one sixth) of elliptic curves with good reduction at 2 in any cubic twist family have rank 1. Our method involves proving that the average size of the 2-Selmer group of elliptic curves in any cubic twist family, having any given root number, is 3. We accomplish this by generalizing a parametrization, due to the second author and Ho, of elliptic curves with extra structure by pairs of binary cubic forms. We then use a novel combination of geometry-of-numbers methods and the circle method that builds on earlier work of Ruth and the first author. In particular, we make use of a new interpretation of the singular integral and series arising in the circle method in terms of real and $p$-adic Haar measures on the relevant group. We prove a uniformity estimate for integral points on the relevant quadric, which along with a sieve allows us to prove that the average size of the 2-Selmer group over the cubic twist family is 3. By suitably partitioning the subset of curves in the family with given root number, we effect a further sieve to show that the root number is equidistributed and that the same average, now taken over only those curves of given root number, is again 3. Finally, we apply the $p$-parity theorem of Dokchitser-Dokchitser and a $p$-converse theorem of Burungale-Skinner to conclude. We also prove the analogue of the above results for the sequence of square numbers: namely, we prove that a positive proportion of square integers are expressible as the sum of two rational cubes, and a positive proportion are not.

The Kummer ratio of the relative class number for prime cyclotomic fields

Abstract:Kummer's conjecture predicts the asymptotic growth of the relative class number of prime cyclotomic fields. We substantially improve the known bounds of Kummer's ratio under three scenarios: no Siegel zero, presence of Siegel zero and assuming the Riemann Hypothesis for the Dirichlet $L$-series attached to odd characters only. The numerical work in this paper extends and improves on our earlier preprint (arXiv:1908.01152) and demonstrates our theoretical results.

Abstract:Let F be a cubic cyclic field with t (⩾ 2) ramified primes. For a finite abelian group G , let r 3 ( G ) be the 3-rank of G . If 3 does not ramify in F , then it is proved that t −1 ⩽ r 3 ( K 2 O F ) ⩽ 2 t . Furthermore, if t is fixed, for any s satisfying t −1 ⩽ s ⩽ 2 t −1, there is always a cubic cyclic field F with exactly t ramified primes such that r 3 ( K 2 O F ) = s . It is also proved that the densities for 3-ranks of tame kernels of cyclic cubic number fields satisfy a Cohen-Lenstra type formula d_∞ ,r = 3^ - r^2 ∏_k = 1^∞( 1 - 3^ - k)/ . -∏_k = 1^r ( 1 - 3^ - k)^2 . This suggests that the Cohen-Lenstra conjecture for ideal class groups can be extended to the tame kernels of cyclic cubic number fields.

Abstract:We investigate the asymptotic distribution of integrals of the $j$-function that are associated to ideal classes in a real quadratic field. To estimate the error term in our asymptotic formula, we prove a bound for sums of Kloosterman sums of half-integral weight that is uniform in every parameter. To establish this estimate we prove a variant of Kuznetsov's formula where the spectral data is restricted to half-integral weight forms in the Kohnen plus space, and we apply Young's hybrid subconvexity estimates for twisted modular $L$-functions.

Abstract:For a primitive Dirichlet character $\chi\pmod q$ we let \[M(\chi):= \frac{1}{\sqrt{q}}\max_{1\leq t \leq q} \Big|\sum_{n \leq t} \chi(n) \Big|.\] In this paper, we investigate the distribution of $M(\chi)$, as $\chi$ ranges over primitive cubic characters $\chi\pmod q$ with $(q,3)=1$ and $q\leq Q$. Our first result gives an estimate for the proportion of such characters for which $M(\chi)>V$, in a uniform range of $V$, which is best possible under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. In particular, we show that the distribution of large cubic character sums behaves very differently from those in the family of non-principal characters modulo a large prime, and the family of quadratic characters. We also investigate the location of the number $N_{\chi}$ where the maximum of $|\sum_{n\leq N} \chi(n)|$ is attained, and show the surprising result that for almost all primitive cubic characters $\chi\pmod q$ with $M(\chi)>V$, $N_{\chi}/q$ is very close to a reduced fraction with a large denominator of size $(\log V)^{1/2+o(1)}$. This contradicts the common belief that for an even character $\chi$, $N_{\chi}/q$ is located near a rational of small denominator and gives a striking difference with the case of even characters in the other two families mentioned above, for which $N_{\chi}/q\approx 1/3$ or $2/3$ for almost all even $\chi$. Furthermore, in the case of cubic characters, the works of Granville-Soundararajan, Goldmakher, and Lamzouri-Mangerel show that if $M(\chi)$ is large, then $\chi$ pretends to be $\xi(n)n^{it}$ for some small $t$, where $\xi$ is an odd character of small conductor $m$. We show that for almost all such characters, we have $M(\chi)=m^{-1/2+o(1)}\big|L(1+it, \chi\overline{\xi})\big|.$

Abstract:For $ f\in\mathbb{Z}[X] $ an irreducible polynomial of degree $ n $, the Cilleruelo's conjecture states that$$\log(\mbox{lcm}(f(1),\dots,f(M)))\sim(n-1)M\log M$$as $ M\rightarrow+\infty $, where $ \mbox{lcm}(f(1),\dots,f(M)) $ is the least common multiple of $f(1),\dots,f(M)$. It's well-known for $ n=1 $ as a consequence of Dirichlet's Theorem for primes in arithmetic progression, and it was proved by Cilleruelo for quadratic polynomials. Recently the conjecture was shown by Rudnick and Zehavi for a large family of polynomials of any degree. We want to investigate an average version of the conjecture for $S_n$-polynomials with integral coefficients over a fixed extension $K/\mathbb{Q}$ by considering the least common multiple of ideals of $\mathcal{O}_K$.

2-Selmer Groups over Multiquadratic Extensions

Abstract:Let K be a multiquadratic number field. We investigate the average dimension of 2-Selmer groups over K for the family of all elliptic curves over the rational numbers (ordered by height). We give upper and lower bounds for this average. In the special case of quadratic fields, these bounds are arbitrarily close for a positive proportion of K. Our bounds are achieved by studying the genus theory invariant for 2-Selmer groups over such fields, whose average we similarly bound and, in many cases, determine. We make use of a variant of the Ekedahl sieve for local sums, which we present in appropriate generality for further applications.

An Analogue of Greenberg's Conjecture for CM Fields

Abstract:Let $K$ be a CM field and $K^+$ be the maximal totally real subfield of $K$. Assume that the primes above $p$ in $K^+$ split in $K$. Let $S$ be a set containing exactly half of the prime ideals in $K$ above $p$. We show, assuming Leopoldt's conjecture is true for $K$ and $p$, that there is a unique $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ unramified outside of $S$ (the $S$-ramified $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$). Such $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions for CM fields have similar properties to the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of a totally real field. For example, Greenberg proved some criterion for the Iwasawa invariants $\mu=\lambda=0$ of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a totally real field, and we will prove analogous results for the $S$-ramified $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a CM field. We also give a numerical criterion for the Iwasawa invariants $\mu=\lambda=0$ for an imaginary biquadratic field, which is analogous to the one given by Fukuda and Komatsu for real quadratic fields.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a multi-quadratic totally real number field. Let $\sigma_1,\dots, \sigma_r$ denote its distinct embeddings. Given $s \in F,$ we give an explicit formula for $\| \sigma(s)\|$ and $\sum_{i<j} \sigma_i(s)\sigma_j(s),$ where $\| \sigma(s)\|=\sqrt{\sum_{i=1}^r(\sigma_i(s))^2}.$ Let $\mathfrak{M}$ be a fractional ideal in $F$ and $\min\left( \mathfrak{M}\right):=\min\{\|\sigma(s)\| \, | \, s \in \mathfrak{M}, s\neq 0 \}.$ The set of shortest nonzero lattice points for $\mathfrak{M}$ is given by $\{s\in \mathfrak{M} : \| \sigma(s)\|=\min(\mathfrak{M}) \}.$ We provide shortest nonzero lattice points for $\mathfrak{M}$ in terms of rational solutions to a given Diophantine equation. As an application, we get a refined asymptotic for the Petersson trace formula for the space of Hilbert cusp forms. We then use the refined asymptotic to obtain a lower bound analogue to a theorem by Jung and Sardari.

Abstract:In this note, we use integral binary cubic forms to study the rational cube sum problem. We prove (unconditionally) that for any positive integer $d$, infinitely many primes in each of the residue classes $ 1 \pmod {9d}$ as well as $ -1 \pmod {9d}$, are sums of two rational cubes. Among other results, we prove that every non-zero residue class $a \pmod {q}$, for any prime $q$, contains infinitely many primes which are sums of two rational cubes. Further, for an arbitrary integer $N$, we show there are infinitely many primes $p$ in each of the residue classes $ 8 \pmod 9$ and $1 \pmod 9$, such that $Np$ is a sum of two rational cubes.

Abstract:In 1997 K. Ono and K. Soundararajan [Invent. Math. 130(1997)] proved that under the generalized Riemann hypothesis any positive odd integer greater than 2719 can be represented by the famous Ramanujan form x(2) + y(2) + 10z(2); equivalently the form 2x(2) + 5y(2) + 4T(z) represents all integers greater than 1359, where T(z) denotes the triangular number z(z + 1)/2. Given positive integers a, b, c we employ modular forms and the theory of quadratic forms to determine completely when the general form ax(2) + by(2) + cT(z) represents sufficiently large integers and to establish similar results for the forms ax(2) + bT(y) + cT(z) and aT(x) + bT(y) + cT(z). Here are some consequences of our main theorems: (i) All sufficiently large odd numbers have the form 2ax(2) + y(2) + z(2) if and only if all prime divisors of a are congruent to 1 modulo (ii) The form ax(2) + y(2) + T(z) is almost universal (i.e., it represents sufficiently large integers) if and only if each odd prime divisor of a is congruent to 1 or 3 modulo 8. (iii) ax(2) + T(y) + T(z) is almost universal if and only if all odd prime divisors of a are congruent to 1 modulo 4.
