Abstract:Given a combinatorial (semi-)model category $M$ and a set of morphisms $C$, we establish the existence of a semi-model category $L_C M$ satisfying the universal property of the left Bousfield localization in the category of semi-model categories. Our main tool is a semi-model categorical version of a result of Jeff Smith, that appears to be of independent interest. Our main result allows for the localization of model categories that fail to be left proper. We give numerous examples and applications, related to the Baez-Dolan stabilization hypothesis, localizations of algebras over operads, chromatic homotopy theory, parameterized spectra, $C^*$-algebras, enriched categories, dg-categories, functor calculus, and Voevodsky's work on radditive functors.

Abstract:We define notions of regularity and (Barr-)exactness for 2-categories. In fact, we define three notions of regularity and exactness, each based on one of the three canonical ways of factorising a functor in Cat: as (surjective on objects, injective on objects and fully faithful), as (bijective on objects, fully faithful), and as (bijective on objects and full, faithful). The correctness of our notions is justified using the theory of lex colimits introduced by Lack and the second author. Along the way, we develop an abstract theory of regularity and exactness relative to a kernel--quotient factorisation, extending earlier work of Street and others.

Abstract:We describe the applications of localization methods, in particular the functorial localization formula, in the proofs of several conjectures from string theory. Functorial localization formula pushes the computations on complicated moduli spaces to simple moduli spaces. It is a key technique in the proof of the general mirror formulas, the proof of the Hori-Vafa formulas for explicit expressions of basic hypergeometric series of homogeneous manifolds, the proof of the Marino-Vafa formula, its generalizations to two partition analogue. We will also discuss our development of the mathematical theory of topological vertex and simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and Witten conjecture.

Abstract:In a 2005 paper, Casacuberta, Scevenels, and Smith construct a homotopy idempotent functor E on the category of simplicial sets with the property that whether it can be expressed as localization with respect to a map f is independent of the ZFC axioms. We show that this construction can be carried out in homotopy type theory. More precisely, we give a general method of associating to a suitable (possibly large) family of maps, a reflective subuniverse of any universe U . When specialized to an appropriate family, this produces a localization which when interpreted in the ∞ ‐topos of spaces agrees with the localization corresponding to E . Our approach generalizes the approach of Casacuberta et al. (Adv. Math. 197 (2005), no. 1, 120–139) in two ways. First, by working in homotopy type theory, our construction can be interpreted in any ∞ ‐topos. Second, while the local objects produced by Casacuberta et al. are always 1‐types, our construction can produce n ‐types, for any n . This is new, even in the ∞ ‐topos of spaces. In addition, by making use of universes, our proof is very direct. Along the way, we prove many results about "small" types that are of independent interest. As an application, we give a new proof that separated localizations exist. We also give results that say when a localization with respect to a family of maps can be presented as localization with respect to a single map, and show that the simplicial model satisfies a strong form of the axiom of choice that implies that sets cover and that the law of excluded middle holds.

On local fibrations of $(\infty,2)$-categories

Abstract:In this work we provide a model-independent notion of local fibrations of $(\infty,2)$-categories which generalises the well-known theory of locally coCartesian fibrations of $(\infty,1)$-categories. Based on previous work, we construct a model category which serves as a specific combinatorial model for this type of fibrations. Our main result is a generalisation of the locally coCartesian straightening and unstraightening construction of Lurie, which yields for any scaled simplicial set $S$ an equivalence of $(\infty,2)$-categories between the $(\infty,2)$-category of $(0,1)$-fibrations over $S$ (also known as inner coCartesian fibrations) and the $(\infty,2)$-category of functors $S \to \mathbb{C}\!\operatorname{at}_{(\infty,2)}$ with values in $(\infty,2)$-categories. Given an $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbb{B}$, our Grothendieck construction can be specialised to produce an equivalence between the $(\infty,2)$-category of local fibrations over $\mathbb{B}$ and the $(\infty,2)$-category of oplax unital functors with values in $\mathbb{C}\!\operatorname{at}_{(\infty,2)}$. Finally, as an application of our results we provide a version of the Yoneda lemma for $(\infty,2)$-categories.

Model category structures on simplicial objects

Abstract:A general method for lifting weak factorization systems in a category S to model category structures on simplicial objects in S is described, analogously to the lifting of cotorsion pairs in Abelian categories to model category structures on chain complexes. This generalizes Quillen's original treatment of (projective) model category structures on simplicial objects. As a new application we show that there is always a model category structure on simplicial objects in the coproduct completion of any (even large) category S with finite limits, which - if S is small - defines the same homotopy theory as any global model category of simplicial pre-sheaves on S. If S is, in addition, extensive, a similar model category structure exists on simplicial objects in S itself. In any case the associated left derivator exists on all diagrams despite the lack of colimits in the original category.

Generalizing quasi-categories via model structures on simplicial sets

Abstract:We use Cisinski's machinery to construct and study model structures on the category of simplicial sets whose classes of fibrant objects generalize quasi-categories. We identify a lifting condition which captures the homotopical behavior of quasi-categories without the algebraic aspects and show that there is a model structure whose fibrant objects are precisely those which satisfy this condition. We also identify a localization of this model structure whose fibrant objects satisfy a "special horn lifting" condition similar to the one satisfied by quasi-categories. This special horn model structure leads to a conjecture characterization of the bijective-on-0-simplices trivial cofibrations of the Joyal model structure. We also discuss how these model structures all relate to one another and to the minimal model structure.

Abstract:A locally coherent exact category is a finitely accessible additive category endowed with an exact structure in which the admissible short exact sequences are the directed colimits of admissible short exact sequences of finitely presentable objects. We show that any exact structure on a small idempotent-complete additive category extends uniquely to a locally coherent exact structure on the category of ind-objects; in particular, any finitely accessible category has the unique maximal and the unique minimal locally coherent exact category structures. All locally coherent exact categories are of Grothendieck type in the sense of Stovicek. We also discuss the canonical embedding of a small exact category into the abelian category of additive sheaves in connection with the locally coherent exact structure on the ind-objects, and deduce two periodicity theorems as applications.

Abstract:I show that any locally Cartesian left localisation of a presentable infinity-category admits a right proper model structure in which all morphisms are cofibrations, and obtain a Koszul duality classification of its fibrations. By a simple criterion in terms of generators for a localisation to be locally Cartesian, this applies to any nullification functor. In particular, it includes examples with non-trivial "homotopical content." I further describe, and provide examples from, the set of fibrations in three contexts: the higher categorical Thomason model structure of Mazel-Gee, where fibrations are local systems; Morel-Voevodsky A1-localisation, where they are a higher analogue of A1-covering spaces; and the Quillen plus construction, where they are related to loop space modules trivialised over the universal acyclic extension.

Completing hearts of triangulated categories via weight-exact localizations

Abstract:We study a weight-exact localization pi of a well generated triangulated category C along with the embedding of the hearts of adjacent t-structures coming from the functor right adjoint to pi. We prove that the functors relating the corresponding four hearts are completely determined by the heart Hw of the weight structure on C along with the set of Hw-morphisms that we invert via pi; it also suffices to know the corresponding embedding of the hearts of t-structures. Our results generalize the description of non-commutative localizations of rings in terms of weight-exact localizations given in an earlier paper of the first author. That paper was essentially devoted to weight-exact localizations by compactly generated subcategories, whereas in the current text we focus on "more complicated" localizations. We recall that two types of localizations of the sort we are interested in were studied by several authors. They took C=D(R-mod); the heart of the first t-structure was equivalent to R-mod, and the second heart was equivalent to the exact abelian category $U_{contra}\subset R-mod$ of U-contramodules (corresponding to a set of Proj R-mod-morphisms U related either to a homological ring epimorphism $u:R\to UU$ or to an ideal of I of R). The functor $R-mod\to U_{contra}$ induced by pi is a certain completion one. Consequently, the hearts of the corresponding weight structures are equivalent to Proj R-mod and to the subcategory of projective objects of U_{contra}, respectively. Moreover, the connecting functors between these categories are isomorphic to ones coming from any weight structure class-generated by a single compact object whose endomorphism ring is R^{op}; in particular, one can take R=Z and C=SH and re-prove some important statements due to Bousfield.

Smashing Localizations in Equivariant Stable Homotopy

Abstract:We study how smashing Bousfield localizations behave under various equivariant functors. We show that the analogs of the smash product and chromatic convergence theorems for the Real Johnson-Wilson theories $E_{\mathbb{R}}(n)$ hold only after Borel completion. We establish analogous results for the $C_{2^n}$-equivariant Johnson-Wilson theories constructed by Beaudry, Hill, Shi, and Zeng. We show that induced localizations upgrade the available norms for an $N_\infty$-algebra, and we determine which new norms appear. Finally, we explore generalizations of our results on smashing localizations in the context of a quasi-Galois extension of $E_\infty$-rings.

Homological Bondal-Orlov localization conjecture for rational singularities

Abstract:Given a resolution of rational singularities $\pi\colon \tilde{X} \to X$ over a field of characteristic zero we use a Hodge-theoretic argument to prove that the image of the functor $\mathbf{R}\pi_*\colon \mathbf{D}(\tilde{X}) \to \mathbf{D}(X)$ between bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves generates $\mathbf{D}(X)$ as a triangulated category. This gives a weak version of the Bondal-Orlov localization conjecture, answering a question of Pavic and Shinder. The same result is established more generally for proper (non-necessarily birational) morphisms $\pi\colon \tilde{X} \to X$, with $\tilde{X}$ smooth, satisfying $\mathbf{R}\pi_*(\mathcal{O}_{\tilde{X}}) = \mathcal{O}_X$.

Abstract:We demonstrate a way to apply $S^1$-localisation to moduli spaces of holomorphic curves. We first prove a reinterpretation of Atyiah-Bott $S^1$-localisation, called {\it localisation by pseudocycles} (LbP), for a smooth semifree $S^1$-action on a manifold. We demonstrate that, for certain moduli spaces of holomorphic curves parametrised by some stratum of the homotopy quotient of a manifold, we may ``lift" the LbP procedure from the parameter space to the moduli space. As an application we deduce relations between equivariant symplectic classes and Gromov-Witten invariants, thus proving a conjecture of Seidel.

Abstract:Presilting and silting subcategories in extriangulated categories were introduced by Adachi and Tsukamoto recently, which are generalizations of those concepts in triangulated categories. Exact categories and triangulated categories are extriangulated categories. In this paper, we prove that the Gabriel-Zisman localization ℬ/(𝒲) of an exact category ℬ with respect to a presilting subcategory 𝒲 satisfying certain condition can be realized as a subfactor category of ℬ . Afterwards, we discuss the relation between silting subcategories and tilting subcategories in exact categories, which gives us a kind of important examples of our results. In particular, for a finite dimensional Gorenstein algebra, we get the relative version of the description of the singularity category due to Happel and Chen-Zhang.

Abstract:For a connected reductive group G and an affine smooth G-variety X over the complex numbers, the localization functor takes g-modules to D-X-modules. We extend this construction to an equivariant and derived setting using the formalism of h-complexes due to Beilinson-Ginzburg, and show that the localizations of Harish-Chandra (g, K)-modules onto X = H\G have regular holonomic cohomologies when H, K subset of G are both spherical reductive subgroups. The relative Lie algebra homologies and Ext-branching spaces for (g, K)-modules are interpreted geometrically in terms of equivariant derived localizations. As direct consequences, we show that they are finite-dimensional under the same assumptions, and relate Euler-Poincare characteristics to local index theorem; this recovers parts of the recent results of M. Kitagawa. Examples and discussions on the relation to Schwartz homologies are also included.
Local cohomology with support in Schubert varieties

Abstract:This paper is concerned with local cohomology sheaves on generalized flag varieties supported in closed Schubert varieties, which carry natural structures as (mixed Hodge) D-modules. We employ Kazhdan--Lusztig theory and Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules to describe a general strategy to calculate the simple composition factors, Hodge filtration, and weight filtration on these modules. Our main tool is the Grothendieck--Cousin complex, introduced by Kempf, which allows us to relate the local cohomology modules in question to parabolic Verma modules over the corresponding Lie algebra. We show that this complex underlies a complex of mixed Hodge modules, and is thus endowed with Hodge and weight filtrations. As a consequence, strictness implies that computing cohomology commutes with taking associated graded with respect to both of these filtrations. We execute this strategy to calculate the composition factors and weight filtration for Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian, in particular showing that the weight filtration is controlled by the augmented Dyck patterns of Raicu--Weyman. As an application, upon restriction to the opposite big cell, we recover the simple composition factors and weight filtration on local cohomology with support in generic determinantal varieties.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that a simplicial map of finite-dimensional locally finite simplicial complexes has contractible point inverses if and only if it is an $\epsilon$-controlled homotopy equivalence for all $\epsilon>0$ if and only if $f\times \mathrm{id}_\mathbb{R}$ is a bounded homotopy equivalence measured in the open cone over the target. This confirms for such a space $X$ the slogan that arbitrarily fine control over $X$ corresponds to bounded control over the open cone $O(X_+)$. For the proof a one parameter family of cellulations $\{X_\epsilon^\prime\}_{0<\epsilon<\epsilon(X)}$ is constructed which provides a retracting map for $X$ which can be used to compensate for sufficiently small control.
