Abstract:Using a parametrisation of $sl_2$ given by the second prolongation of the group action of unimodular fractional linear transformations as presented in an article of Clarkson and Olver, we find a Monge normal form describing the rolling of two hyperboloid surfaces over each other.

Abstract:We consider the maximally symmetric $(2,3,5)$-distribution given by the An-Nurowski circle twistor bundle over the product of an An-Nurowski surface and the plane. This circle twistor distribution encodes the configuration space of an An-Nurowski surface rolling without slipping or twisting on the plane. We calculate the vector fields associated to this maximally symmetric $(2,3,5)$-distribution that define a split $\frak{g}_2$ Lie algebra and by projection we obtain an action of $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$ on the submanifold $\mathbb{R}^2\times \mathbb{S}^1$ (the configuration space without a surface).

Abstract:Rollings of reductive homogeneous spaces are investigated. More precisely, for a reductive homogeneous space G / H with reductive decomposition , we consider rollings of over G / H without slip and without twist, where G / H is equipped with an invariant covariant derivative. To this end, an intrinsic point of view is taken, meaning that a rolling is a curve in the configuration space Q which is tangent to a certain distribution. By considering an H -principal fiber bundle over the configuration space equipped with a suitable principal connection, rollings of over G / H can be expressed in terms of horizontally lifted curves on . The total space of is a product of Lie groups. In particular, for a given control curve, this point of view allows for characterizing rollings of over G / H as solutions of an explicit, time-variant ordinary differential equation (ODE) on , the so-called kinematic equation. An explicit solution for the associated initial value problem is obtained for rollings with respect to the canonical invariant covariant derivative of first and second kind if the development curve in G / H is the projection of a one-parameter subgroup in G . Lie groups and Stiefel manifolds are discussed as examples.

Abstract:We construct normal forms for Lorentzian metrics on Engel distributions under the assumption that abnormal curves are timelike future directed Hamiltonian geodesics. Then we indicate some cases in which the abnormal timelike future directed curve initiating at the origin is geometrically optimal. We also give certain estimates for reachable sets from a point.

A renormalised description of meromorphic connections over curves

Abstract:The Renormalisation Group (RG) is a systematic procedure used to regularise divergences appearing as artefacts when constructing solutions to a large class of differential problems, whether perturbatively or not. This paper is devoted to performing it in the non-perturbative context of flat sections of meromorphic connections in holomorphic principal bundles over a base complex curve, with reductive and complex structure Lie groups. Using the interpretation of Kunuhiro of RG in terms of envelopes of families of solutions, we identify these envelopes as particular flat sections associated to points on the corresponding quantum spectral curve, namely certain divisors on the base curve with local coefficients in the adjoint bundle, yielding integral representations. This shows that the non-perturbative renormalisation of flat sections of principal bundles over curves fits naturally within the description of meromorphic connections via their quantum geometry, or homology \textit{à la} Goldman, where the flat sections and their deformations are parameterized by degree zero and one chains respectively. We conclude the paper by mentioning upcoming applications.

Abstract:We propose two constructions extending the Chern-Moser normal form to non-integrable Levi-nondegenerate (hypersurface type) almost CR structures. One of them translates the Chern-Moser normalization into pure intrinsic setting, whereas the other directly extends the (extrinsic) Chern-Moser normal form by allowing non-CR embeddings that are in some sense "maximally CR". One of the main differences with the classical integrable case is the presence of the non-integrability tensor at the same order as the Levi form, making impossible a good quadric approximation---a key tool in the Chern-Moser theory. Partial normal forms are obtained for general almost CR structures of any CR codimension, in particular, for almost-complex structures. Applications are given to the equivalence problem and the Lie group structure of the group of all CR-diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:To a complex projective structure Σ on a surface, Thurston associates a locally convex pleated surface. We derive bounds on the geometry of both in terms of the norms ‖ϕΣ‖∞ and ‖ϕΣ‖2 of the quadratic differential ϕΣ of Σ given by the Schwarzian derivative of the associated locally univalent map. We show that these give a unifying approach that generalizes a number of important, well-known results for convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on 3-manifolds, including bounds on the Lipschitz constant for the nearest-point retraction and the length of the bending lamination. We then use these bounds to begin a study of the Weil–Petersson gradient flow of renormalized volume on the space CC(N) of convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on a compact manifold N with incompressible boundary, leading to a proof of the conjecture that the renormalized volume has infimum given by one half the simplicial volume of DN, the double of N.

Abstract:Let $L$ and $L'$ be two invertible sheaves over a projective variety $X$. We suppose that $L$ and $L'$ are generated by their global section spaces $\Gamma(L)$ and $\Gamma(L')$. We prove in this article that the morphism : \[\Gamma(L) \otimes \Gamma(L') \to \Gamma(L \otimes L')\] is surjective, in the case where $X$ is a rank one wonderful variety. In particular, the cone over a rank one wonderful variety defined by a very ample invertible sheaf is always normal. Soient $L$ et $L'$ deux faisceaux inversibles sur une variété projective $X$. On suppose que $L$ et $L'$ sont engendrés par leurs espaces de sections globales $\Gamma(L)$ et $\Gamma(L')$. Normal forms for CR singular codimension two Levi-flat submanifolds

Abstract:Real-analytic Levi-flat codimension two CR singular submanifolds are a natural generalization to ${\mathbb{C}}^m$, $m > 2$, of Bishop surfaces in ${\mathbb{C}}^2$. Such submanifolds for example arise as zero sets of mixed-holomorphic equations with one variable antiholomorphic. We classify the codimension two Levi-flat CR singular quadrics, and we notice that new types of submanifolds arise in dimension 3 or greater. In fact, the nondegenerate submanifolds, i.e. higher order purturbations of $z_m=\bar{z}_1z_2+\bar{z}_1^2$, have no analogue in dimension 2. We prove that the Levi-foliation extends through the singularity in the real-analytic nondegenerate case. Furthermore, we prove that the quadric is a (convergent) normal form for a natural large class of such submanifolds, and we compute its automorphism group. In general, we find a formal normal form in ${\mathbb{C}}^3$ in the nondegenerate case that shows infinitely many formal invariants.

Hypersurfaces of constant Gauss-Kronecker curvature with Li-normalization in affine space

Abstract:For convex hypersurfaces in the affine space $\mathbb{A}^{n+1}$ ($n\geq2$), A.-M.\ Li introduced the notion of $\alpha$-normal field as a generalization of the affine normal field. By studying a Monge-Ampère equation with gradient blowup boundary condition, we show that regular domains in $\mathbb{A}^{n+1}$, defined with respect to a proper convex cone and satisfying some regularity assumption if $n\geq3$, are foliated by complete convex hypersurfaces with constant Gauss-Kronecker curvature relative to the Li-normalization. When $n=2$, a key feature is that no regularity assumption is required, and the result extends our recent work about the $\alpha=1$ case.

Local Normal Forms of Noncommutative Functions

Abstract:This article describes local normal forms of functions in noncommuting variables, up to equivalence generated by isomorphism of noncommutative Jacobi algebras, extending singularity theory in the style of Arnold's commutative local normal forms into the noncommutative realm. This generalisation unveils many new phenomena, including an ADE classification when the Jacobi ring has dimension zero and, by suitably taking limits, a further ADE classification in dimension one. These are natural generalisations of the simple singularities and those with infinite multiplicity in Arnold's classification. We obtain normal forms away from some exceptional Type E cases. Remarkably these normal forms have no moduli, and the key new feature is that the noncommutative world affords larger families. This theory has a range of immediate consequences to the birational geometry of 3-folds. The normal forms of dimension zero are the analytic classification of smooth 3-fold flops, and one outcome of NC singularity theory is the first complete list of all Type D flopping germs, with variants covering Type E. The normal forms of dimension one have further ramifications to divisorial contractions to a curve. In addition, the general techniques also give strong evidence towards new contractibility criteria for rational curves.

Abstract:We prove asymptotic normality of the distributions defined by q-supernomials, which implies asymptotic normality of the distributions given by the central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion modules of the current algebra of sl2. The limit is taken over linearly scaled fusion powers of a fixed collection of irreducible representations. This includes as special instances all Demazure modules of the affine Kac-Moody algebra associated to sl2. Along with an available complementary result on the asymptotic normality of the basic specialization of graded tensors of the type A standard representation, our result is a central limit theorem for a serious class of graded tensors. It therefore serves as an indication towards universal behavior: The central string functions and the basic specialization of fusion and, in particular, Demazure modules behave asymptotically normal, as the number of fusions scale linearly in an asymptotic parameter, N say.

Abstract:A matrix $C$ has the Monge property if $c_{ij} + c_{IJ} \leq c_{Ij} + c_{iJ}$ for all $i < I$ and $j < J$. Monge matrices play an important role in combinatorial optimization; for example, when the transportation problem (resp., the traveling salesman problem) has a cost matrix which is Monge, then the problem can be solved in linear (resp., quadratic) time. For given matrix dimensions, we define the Monge polytope to be the set of nonnegative Monge matrices normalized with respect to the sum of the entries. In this paper, we give an explicit description and enumeration of the vertices, edges, and facets of the Monge polytope; these results are sufficient to construct the face lattice. In the special case of two-row Monge matrices, we also prove a polytope volume formula. For symmetric Monge matrices, we show that the Monge polytope is a simplex and we prove a general formula for its volume.

Abstract:In this paper we develop the generalised Schur theory offered in the recent paper by the second author in dimension one case, and apply it to obtain two applications in different directions of algebra/algebraic geometry. The first application is a new explicit parametrisation of torsion free rank one sheaves on projective irreducible curves with vanishing cohomology groups. The second application is a commutativity criterion for operators in the Weyl algebra or, more generally, in the ring of ordinary differential operators, which we prove in the case when operators have a normal form with the restriction top line (for details see Introduction). Both applications are obtained with the help of normal forms. Namely, considering the ring of ordinary differential operators $D_1=K[[x]][\partial ]$ as a subring of a certain complete non-commutative ring $\hat{D}_1^{sym}$, the normal forms of differential operators mentioned here are obtained after conjugation by some invertible operator ("Schur operator"), calculated using one of the operators in a ring. Normal forms of commuting operators are polynomials with constant coefficients in the differentiation, integration and shift operators, which have a restricted finite order in each variable, and can be effectively calculated for any given commuting operators.

Abstract:We solve the equivalence problem for rank 3 completely nonholonomic vector distributions with 6-dimensional square on a smooth manifold of arbitrary dimension n under very mild genericity conditions. The main idea is to consider the projectivization of the annihilator of a given 3-dimensional distribution. It is naturally foliated by characteristic curves, which are also called the abnormal extremals of the distribution. The dynamics of vertical fibers along characteristic curves defines certain curves of flags of isotropic and coisotropic subspaces in a linear symplectic space. The problem of equivalence of distributions can be essentially reduced to the differential geometry of such curves. The class of all 3-distributions under consideration is split into a finite number of subclasses according to the Young diagram of their flags. The local geometry of distributions can be recovered from the properties of the symmetry group of so-called flat curves of flags associated with this Young diagram. In each subclass we describe the flat distribution and construct a canonical frame for any other distribution. It turns out that for n>6 in the most nontrivial case the symmetry algebra of the flat distribution can be described in terms of rational normal curves (their secants and tangential developables) in projective spaces and its dimension grows exponentially with respect to n.

Abstract:Analysing statistical properties of the normal forms of random braids, we observe that, except for an initial and a final region whose lengths are uniformly bounded (that is, the bound is independent of the length of the braid), the distributions of the factors of the normal form of sufficiently long random braids depend neither on the position in the normal form nor on the lengths of the random braids. Moreover, when multiplying a braid on the right, the expected number of factors in its normal form that are modified, called the expected penetration distance, is uniformly bounded.We explain these observations by analysing the growth rates of two regular languages associated to normal forms of elements of Garside groups, respectively to the modification of a normal form by right multiplication.A universal bound on the expected penetration distance in a Garside group yields in particular an algorithm for computing normal forms that has linear expected running time.

Riemannian geometry of maximal surface group representations acting on pseudo-hyperbolic space

Abstract:For any maximal surface group representation into $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,n+1)$, we introduce a non-degenerate scalar product on the the first cohomology group of the surface with values in the associated flat bundle. In particular, it gives rise to a non-degenerate Riemannian metric on the smooth locus of the subset consisting of maximal representations inside the character variety. In the case $n=2$, we carefully study the properties of the Riemannian metric on the maximal connected components, proving that it is compatible with the orbifold structure and finding some totally geodesic sub-varieties. Then, in the general case, we explain when a representation with Zariski closure contained in $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,3)$ represents a smooth or orbifold point in the maximal $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,n+1)$-character variety and we show that the associated space is totally geodesic for any $n\ge 3$.
