Abstract:Piezoelectric fluoropolymers convert mechanical energy to electricity and are ideal for sustainably providing power to electronic devices. To convert mechanical energy, a net polarization must be induced in the fluoropolymer, which is currently achieved via an energy intensive electrical poling process. Eliminating this process will enable the low-energy production of efficient energy harvesters. Here, by combining molecular dynamics simulations, piezoresponse force microscopy, and electrodynamic measurements, we reveal a hitherto unseen polarization locking phenomena of poly(vinylidene fluoride-$\mathit{co}$-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) perpendicular to the basal plane of two-dimensional (2D) Ti$_{3}$C$_{2}$T$_{\mathit{x}}$ MXene nanosheets. This polarization locking, driven by strong electrostatic interactions enabled exceptional energy harvesting performance, with a measured piezoelectric charge coefficient, $\mathit{d_{33}}$, of -52.0 picocoulombs per newton, significantly higher than electrically poled PVDF-TrFE (approximately -38 picocoulombs per newton). This study provides a new fundamental and low energy input mechanism of poling fluoropolymers, which enables new levels of performance in electromechanical technologies.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: **How to achieve efficient polarization of piezoelectric polymers through a new mechanism without using the high - energy - consumption electrode polarization process, thereby improving energy harvesting performance**. Specifically, in traditional methods, in order to enable piezoelectric polymers (such as polyvinylidene fluoride - trifluoroethylene copolymer PVDF - TrFE) to effectively convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, electrode polarization treatment must be carried out by applying a high - intensity electric field. This process is not only highly energy - consuming, but also restricts its commercialization process in some emerging applications, such as energy harvesting for wearable electronic devices. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new mechanism based on two - dimensional material Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets and PVDF - TrFE composites, achieving spontaneous polarization locking of PVDF - TrFE on the Ti3C2Tx nanosheet substrate through strong electrostatic interactions. This method can make the dipole moment of PVDF - TrFE perpendicular to the basal plane of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets without the need for an external electric field, thereby significantly improving the piezoelectric properties of the material. Experimental results show that the piezoelectric charge coefficient \(d_{33}\) of this composite material reaches - 52.0 pC/N, much higher than that of PVDF - TrFE treated by traditional electrode polarization (about - 38 pC/N). This proves the effectiveness of the new mechanism and provides a new approach for developing low - energy - consumption, high - performance piezoelectric materials. In summary, the main goal of this research is to introduce Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets as templates, utilize the strong electrostatic interaction between them and PVDF - TrFE, achieve efficient polarization without electrode polarization, and thus promote the wide application of piezoelectric materials in fields such as energy harvesting.
