Abstract:High dimensional expanders is a vibrant emerging field of study. Nevertheless, the only known construction of bounded degree high dimensional expanders is based on Ramanujan complexes, whereas one dimensional bounded degree expanders are abundant. In this work, we construct new families of bounded degree high dimensional expanders obeying the local spectral expansion property. This property has a number of important consequences, including geometric overlapping, fast mixing of high dimensional random walks, agreement testing and agreement expansion. Our construction also yields new families of expander graphs which are close to the Ramanujan bound, i.e., their spectral gap is close to optimal. The construction is quite elementary and it is presented in a self contained manner; This is in contrary to the highly involved previously known construction of the Ramanujan complexes. The construction is also very symmetric (such symmetry properties are not known for Ramanujan complexes) ; The symmetry of the construction could be used, for example, in order to obtain good symmetric LDPC codes that were previously based on Ramanujan graphs. The main tool that we use for is the theory of coset geometries. Coset geometries arose as a tool for studying finite simple groups. Here, we show that coset geometries arise in a very natural manner for groups of elementary matrices over any finitely generated algebra over a commutative unital ring. In other words, we show that such groups act simply transitively on the top dimensional face of a pure, partite, clique complex.

Sparse High Dimensional Expanders via Local Lifts

Abstract:High dimensional expanders (HDXs) are a hypergraph generalization of expander graphs. They are extensively studied in the math and TCS communities due to their many applications. Like expander graphs, HDXs are especially interesting for applications when they are bounded degree, namely, if the number of edges adjacent to every vertex is bounded. However, only a handful of constructions are known to have this property, all of which rely on algebraic techniques. In particular, no random or combinatorial construction of bounded degree HDXs is known. As a result, our understanding of these objects is limited. The degree of an $i$-face in an HDX is the number of $(i+1)$-faces containing it. In this work we construct HDXs whose higher dimensional faces have bounded degree. This is done by giving an elementary and deterministic algorithm that takes as input a regular $k$-dimensional HDX $X$ and outputs another $k$-dimensional HDX $\widehat{X}$ with twice as many vertices. While the degree of vertices in $\widehat{X}$ grows, the degree of the $(k-1)$-faces in $\widehat{X}$ stays the same. As a result, we obtain a new `algebra-free' construction of HDXs whose $(k-1)$-face degree is bounded. Our algorithm is based on a simple and natural generalization of the construction by Bilu and Linial (Combinatorica, 2006), which build expanders using lifts coming from edge signings. Our construction is based on local lifts of HDXs, where a local lift is a complex whose top-level links are lifts of links in the original complex. We demonstrate that a local lift of an HDX is an HDX in many cases. In addition, combining local lifts with existing bounded degree constructions creates new families of bounded degree HDXs with significantly different links than before. For every large enough $D$, we use this technique to construct families of bounded degree HDXs with links that have diameter $\geq D$.

Abstract:Let $G= (V,E)$ be a finite graph. For $d_0>0$ we say that $G$ is $d_0$-regular, if every $v\in V$ has degree $d_0$. We say that $G$ is $(d_0, d_1)$-regular, for $0<d_1<d_0$, if $G$ is $d_0$ regular and for every $v\in V$, the subgraph induced on $v$'s neighbors is $d_1$-regular. Similarly, $G$ is $(d_0, d_1,\ldots, d_{n-1})$-regular for $0<d_{n-1}<\ldots<d_1<d_0$, if $G$ is $d_0$ regular and for every $1\leq i\leq n-1$, the joint neighborhood of every clique of size $i$ is $d_i$-regular; In that case, we say that $G$ is an $n$-dimensional hyper-regular graph (HRG). Here we define a new kind of graph product, through which we build examples of infinite families of $n$-dimensional HRG such that the joint neighborhood of every clique of size at most $n-1$ is connected. In particular, relying on the work of Kaufman and Oppenheim, our product yields an infinite family of $n$-dimensional HRG for arbitrarily large $n$ with good expansion properties. This answers a question of Dinur regarding the existence of such objects.

Explicit two-sided unique-neighbor expanders

Abstract:We study the problem of constructing explicit sparse graphs that exhibit strong vertex expansion. Our main result is the first two-sided construction of imbalanced unique-neighbor expanders, meaning bipartite graphs where small sets contained in both the left and right bipartitions exhibit unique-neighbor expansion, along with algebraic properties relevant to constructing quantum codes. Our constructions are obtained from instantiations of the tripartite line product of a large tripartite spectral expander and a sufficiently good constant-sized unique-neighbor expander, a new graph product we defined that generalizes the line product in the work of Alon and Capalbo and the routed product in the work of Asherov and Dinur. To analyze the vertex expansion of graphs arising from the tripartite line product, we develop a sharp characterization of subgraphs that can arise in bipartite spectral expanders, generalizing results of Kahale, which may be of independent interest. By picking appropriate graphs to apply our product to, we give a strongly explicit construction of an infinite family of $(d_1,d_2)$-biregular graphs $(G_n)_{n\ge 1}$ (for large enough $d_1$ and $d_2$) where all sets $S$ with fewer than a small constant fraction of vertices have $\Omega(d_1\cdot |S|)$ unique-neighbors (assuming $d_1 \leq d_2$). Additionally, we can also guarantee that subsets of vertices of size up to $\exp(\Omega(\sqrt{\log |V(G_n)|}))$ expand losslessly.

Sparser Abelian High Dimensional Expanders

Abstract:We present two new explicit constructions of Cayley high dimensional expanders (HDXs) over the abelian group $\mathbb{F}_2^n$. Our expansion proofs use only linear algebra and combinatorial arguments. The first construction gives local spectral HDXs of any constant dimension and subpolynomial degree $\exp(n^\epsilon)$ for every $\epsilon >0$, improving on a construction by Golowich [Gol23] which achieves $\epsilon =1/2$. [Gol23] derives these HDXs by sparsifying the complete Grassmann poset of subspaces. The novelty in our construction is the ability to sparsify any expanding Grassmannian posets, leading to iterated sparsification and much smaller degrees. The sparse Grassmannian (which is of independent interest in the theory of HDXs) serves as the generating set of the Cayley graph. Our second construction gives a 2-dimensional HDXs of any polynomial degree $\exp(\epsilon n$) for any constant $\epsilon > 0$, which is simultaneously a spectral expander and a coboundary expander. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such non-trivial construction. We name it the Johnson complex, as it is derived from the classical Johnson scheme, whose vertices serve as the generating set of this Cayley graph. This construction may be viewed as a derandomization of the recent random geometric complexes of [LMSY23]. Establishing coboundary expansion through Gromov's "cone method" and the associated isoperimetric inequalities is the most intricate aspect of this construction. While these two constructions are quite different, we show that they both share a common structure, resembling the intersection patterns of vectors in the Hadamard code. We propose a general framework of such "Hadamard-like" constructions in the hope that it will yield new HDXs.

Abstract:In this paper we are concerned with various graph invariants (girth, diameter, expansion constants, eigenvalues of the Laplacian, tree number) and their analogs for weighted graphs -- weighing the graph changes a combinatorial problem to one in analysis. We study both weighted and unweighted graphs which are extremal for these invariants. In the unweighted case we concentrate on finding extrema among all (usually) regular graphs with the same number of vertices; we also study the relationships between such graphs.

Abstract:We construct an infinite family of bounded-degree bipartite unique neighbour expander graphs with arbitrarily unbalanced sides. Although weaker than the lossless expanders constructed byCapalbo et al.,our construction is simpler and may be closer to being implementable in practice, due to the smaller constants. We construct these graphs by composing bipartite Ramanujan graphs with a fixed-size gadget in a way that generalises the construction of unique neighbour expanders by Alon and Capalbo. For the analysis of our construction, we prove a strong upper bound on average degrees in small induced subgraphs of bipartite Ramanujan graphs. Our bound generalises Kahale's average degree bound to bipartite Ramanujan graphs, and may be of independent interest. Surprisingly, our bound strongly relies on the exact Ramanujan-ness of the graph and is not known to hold for nearly-Ramanujan graphs.

High-dimensional expanders from Kac--Moody--Steinberg groups

Abstract:High-dimensional expanders are a generalization of the notion of expander graphs to simplicial complexes and give rise to a variety of applications in computer science and other fields. We provide a general tool to construct families of bounded degree high-dimensional spectral expanders. Inspired by the work of Kaufman and Oppenheim, we use coset complexes over quotients of Kac-Moody-Steinberg groups of rank $d+1$, $d$-spherical and purely $d$-spherical. We prove that infinite families of such quotients exist provided that the underlying field is of size at least 4 and the Kac-Moody-Steinberg group is 2-spherical, giving rise to new families of bounded degree high-dimensional expanders. In the case the generalized Cartan matrix we consider is affine, we recover the construction of O'Donnell and Pratt from 2022, (and thus also the one of Kaufman and Oppenheim) by considering Chevalley groups as quotients of affine Kac-Moody-Steinberg groups. Moreover, our construction applies to the case where the root system is of type $\tilde{G}_2$, a case that was not covered in earlier works.

Rigidity expander graphs

Abstract:Jordán and Tanigawa recently introduced the $d$-dimensional algebraic connectivity $a_d(G)$ of a graph $G$. This is a quantitative measure of the $d$-dimensional rigidity of $G$ which generalizes the well-studied notion of spectral expansion of graphs. We present a new lower bound for $a_d(G)$ defined in terms of the spectral expansion of certain subgraphs of $G$ associated with a partition of its vertices into $d$ parts. In particular, we obtain a new sufficient condition for the rigidity of a graph $G$. As a first application, we prove the existence of an infinite family of $k$-regular $d$-rigidity-expander graphs for every $d\ge 2$ and $k\ge 2d+1$. Conjecturally, no such family of $2d$-regular graphs exists. Second, we show that $a_d(K_n)\geq \frac{1}{2}\left\lfloor\frac{n}{d}\right\rfloor$, which we conjecture to be essentially tight. In addition, we study the extremal values $a_d(G)$ attained if $G$ is a minimally $d$-rigid graph.

Topological expanders, coarse geometry and thick embeddings of complexes

Abstract:We quantify the topological expansion properties of bounded degree simplicial complexes in terms of a family of sublinear functions, in analogy with the separation profile of Benjamini-Schramm-Timár for classical expansion of bounded degree graphs. We prove that, like the separation profile, these new invariants are monotone under regular maps between complexes satisfying appropriate higher connectivity assumptions. In the dimension $1$ case, we recover the cutwidth profile of Huang-Hume-Kelly-Lam. We also prove the seemingly new result that any $1$-dimensional topological expander necessarily contains a graphical expander. In higher dimensions, we give full calculations of these new invariants for Euclidean spaces, which are natural analogues of waist and width-volume inequalities due to Gromov and Guth respectively. We present several other methods of obtaining upper bounds including naïve (yet useful) direct product and fibring theorems, and show how lower bounds can be obtained via thick embeddings of complexes, in analogy with previous work of Barrett-Hume. Using this, we find lower bounds for $k$-expansion of $(k+1)$-fold horocyclic products of trees, and for rank $k$ symmetric spaces of non-compact type. As a further application, we prove that for every $k\geq 2$ there is no coarse embedding (and more generally, no regular map) from the $k$-fold horocyclic product of $3$-regular trees to either any product $(\mathbb{H}^2)^{k-2}\times H \times D$ where $\mathbb{H}^2$ is the real hyperbolic plane, $H$ is a bounded degree hyperbolic graph and $D$ is a doubling metric space, or to any symmetric space whose non-compact factor has corank (dimension minus rank) is strictly less than $k$.

Abstract:We study properties of typical closed geodesics on expander surfaces of high genus, i.e. closed hyperbolic surfaces with a uniform spectral gap of the Laplacian. Under an additional systole lower bound assumption, we show almost every geodesic of length much greater than $\sqrt{g}\log g$ is non-simple. And we prove almost every closed geodesic of length much greater than $g (\log g)^2$ is filling, i.e. each component of the complement of the geodesic is a topological disc. Our results apply to Weil-Petersson random surfaces, random covers of a fixed surface, and Brooks-Makover random surfaces, since these models are known to have uniform spectral gap asymptotically almost surely. Our proof technique involves adapting Margulis' counting strategy to work at low length scales.

Sparse expanders have negative curvature

Abstract:We prove that bounded-degree expanders with non-negative Ollivier-Ricci curvature do not exist, thereby solving a long-standing open problem suggested by Naor and Milman and publicized by Ollivier (2010). In fact, this remains true even if we allow for a vanishing proportion of large degrees, large eigenvalues, and negatively-curved edges. To establish this, we work directly at the level of Benjamini-Schramm limits, and exploit the entropic characterization of the Liouville property on stationary random graphs to show that non-negative curvature and spectral expansion are incompatible "at infinity". We then transfer this result to finite graphs via local weak convergence. The same approach also applies to the Bacry-Emery curvature condition CD$(0,\infty)$, thereby settling a recent conjecture of Cushing, Liu and Peyerimhoff (2019).

Abstract:A $(d_1,d_2)$-biregular bipartite graph $G=(L\cup R,E)$ is called left-$(m,\delta)$ unique-neighbor expander iff each subset $S$ of the left vertices with $|S|\leq m$ has at least $\delta d_1|S|$ unique-neighbors, where unique-neighbors mean vertices with exactly one neighbor in $S$. We can also define right/two-sided expanders similarly. In this paper, we give the following three strongly explicit constructions of unique-neighbor expanders with better unique-neighbor expansion for polynomial-sized sets, while sufficient expansion for linear-sized sets is also preserved: (1) Two-sided $(n^{1/3-\epsilon},1-\epsilon)$ lossless expanders for arbitrary $\epsilon>0$ and aspect ratio. (2) Left-$(\Omega(n),1-\epsilon)$ lossless expanders with right-$(n^{1/3-\epsilon},\delta)$ expansion for some $\delta>0$. (3) Two-sided-$(\Omega(n),\delta)$ unique-neighbor expanders with two-sided-$(n^{\Omega(1)},1/2-\epsilon)$ expansion. The second construction exhibits the first explicit family of one-sided lossless expanders with unique-neighbor expansion for polynomial-sized sets from the other side and constant aspect ratio. The third construction gives two-sided unique-neighbor expanders with additional $(1/2-\epsilon)$ unique-neighbor expansion for two-sided polynomial-sized sets, which approaches the $1/2$ requirement in Lin and Hsieh (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2203.03581" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.03581">arXiv:2203.03581</a>). Our techniques involve tripartite product recently introduced by Hsieh et al (STOC 2024), combined with a generalized existence argument of biregular graph with optimal two-sided unique-neighbor expansion for almost all degrees. We also use a new reduction from large girth/bicycle-freeness to vertex expansion, which might be of independent interest.

On an extremal problem for locally sparse multigraphs

Abstract:A multigraph $G$ is an $(s,q)$-graph if every $s$-set of vertices in $G$ supports at most $q$ edges of $G$, counting multiplicities. Mubayi and Terry posed the problem of determining the maximum of the product of the edge-multiplicities in an $(s,q)$-graph on $n$ vertices. We give an asymptotic solution to this problem for the family $(s,q)=(2r, a\binom{2r}{2}+\mathrm{ex}(2r, K_{r+1})-1 )$ with $r, a\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 2}$. This greatly generalises previous results on the problem due to Mubayi and Terry and to Day, Treglown and the author, who between them had resolved the special case $r=2$. Our result asymptotically confirms an infinite family of cases in (and overcomes a major obstacle to a resolution of) a conjecture of Day, Treglown and the author.

Localized Version of Hypergraph Erdos-Gallai Theorem

Abstract:This paper focuses on extensions of the classic Erdős-Gallai Theorem for the set of weighted function of each edge in a graph. The weighted function of an edge $e$ of an $n$-vertex uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is defined to a special function with respect to the number of edges of the longest Berge path containing $e$. We prove that the summation of the weighted function of all edges is at most $n$ for an $n$-vertex uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ and characterize all extremal hypergraphs that attain the value, which strengthens and extends the hypergraph version of the classic Erdős-Gallai Theorem.

Abstract:Expander decompositions form the basis of one of the most flexible paradigms for close-to-linear-time graph algorithms. Length-constrained expander decompositions generalize this paradigm to better work for problems with lengths, distances and costs. Roughly, an $(h,s)$-length $\phi$-expander decomposition is a small collection of length increases to a graph so that nodes within distance $h$ can route flow over paths of length $hs$ with congestion at most $1/\phi$.

Abstract:We give new bounds on the cosystolic expansion constants of several families of high dimensional expanders, and the known coboundary expansion constants of order complexes of homogeneous geometric lattices, including the spherical building of $SL_n(F_q)$. The improvement applies to the high dimensional expanders constructed by Lubotzky, Samuels and Vishne, and by Kaufman and Oppenheim. Our new expansion constants do not depend on the degree of the complex nor on its dimension, nor on the group of coefficients. This implies improved bounds on Gromov's topological overlap constant, and on Dinur and Meshulam's cover stability, which may have applications for agreement testing. In comparison, existing bounds decay exponentially with the ambient dimension (for spherical buildings) and in addition decay linearly with the degree (for all known bounded-degree high dimensional expanders). Our results are based on several new techniques: * We develop a new "color-restriction" technique which enables proving dimension-free expansion by restricting a multi-partite complex to small random subsets of its color classes. * We give a new "spectral" proof for Evra and Kaufman's local-to-global theorem, deriving better bounds and getting rid of the dependence on the degree. This theorem bounds the cosystolic expansion of a complex using coboundary expansion and spectral expansion of the links. * We derive absolute bounds on the coboundary expansion of the spherical building (and any order complex of a homogeneous geometric lattice) by constructing a novel family of very short cones.

Random Schreier graphs as expanders

Abstract:Expander graphs, due to their mixing properties, are useful in many algorithms and combinatorial constructions. One can produce an expander graph with high probability by taking a random graph (e.g., the union of $d$ random bijections for a bipartite graph of degree $d$). This construction is much simpler than all known explicit constructions of expanders and gives graphs with good mixing properties (small second largest eigenvalue) with high probability. However, from the practical viewpoint, it uses too many random bits, so it is difficult to generate and store these bits for large graphs. The natural idea is to restrict the class of the bijections that we use. For example, if both sides are linear spaces $\mathbb{F}_q^k$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, we may consider only \emph{linear} bijections, making the number of random bits polynomial in $k$ (and not $q^k$). In this paper we provide some experimental data that shows that this approach conserves the mixing properties (the second eigenvalue) for several types of graphs (undirected regular and biregular bipartite graphs). We also prove some upper bounds for the second eigenvalue (though they are quite weak compared with the experimental results). Finally, we discuss the possibility to decrease the number of random bits further by using Toeplitz matrices; our experiments show that this change makes the mixing properties only marginally worse while the number of random bits decreases significantly.
