Abstract:The research presents findings from a study on the development of the skull and brain in human fetuses, specifically focusing on the anterior cranial fossa. This area provides protection for the frontal lobes, which are crucial for human personality development later in life. The study describes the anatomical structure of the anterior cranial fossa during the prenatal period and examines disorders that may lead to congenital defects. The aim was to assess the anterior cranial fossa during prenatal development using innovative computer image processing techniques not previously applied in this anatomical area. A metrological analysis of the human anterior cranial fossa was conducted at various developmental stages, and the study explored the relationship between selected dimensions and developmental age. It compared the development of the anterior cranial fossa to that of the other two cranial fossae, investigating symmetry during development and sexual dimorphism of the anterior fossa and skull base before birth. The study also considered clinical aspects, including a mechanical model of developing skull based on obtained results, enabling the approximation of the pathomechanism of congenital skull and brain defects and potential treatment options. The study included a collection of 77 human fetuses aged between 10 and 27 weeks of gestation. Computer image processing techniques were employed, representing a novelty in neuroanatomical research. The study also discussed the advantages of computerized image acquisition and measurement methods over traditional anatomical preparation methods, particularly due to the possibility of non-contact measurements, crucial for delicate neural tissue of fetal brains. Detailed results obtained were presented along with their statistical analysis. The study found that during the development of the human cranial base, the angle of the anterior cranial fossa decreased, compensated by an increase in the angle of the middle cranial fossa. It was also noted that the development of the cranial base within the studied age range occurred symmetrically relative to the midline plane of the body. Sexual dimorphism of the anterior fossa was evident in the prenatal period, with male fetuses exhibiting a larger angle compared to female fetuses, while female fetuses exhibited greater height of the crista galli of the ethmoid bone. The study also discussed the findings regarding the skull's structure in relation to function, describing it as resembling an elevated drop-shaped tank associated with the containment of cerebrospinal fluid and highly hydrated brain tissue. Additionally, the study observed the formation of the so-called Felizter's supporting arches, a ribbed system formed at the lower part of the skull tank, stiffening the shell structure. In our discussion, we compared our results with existing research in this field. We looked at earlier studies on fetal skull anatomy and reviewed findings from prenatal and neonatal imaging studies. We emphasized the clinical significance of skull geometry, including specific lines used to diagnose skull base depression, such as Chamberlain, McGregor's basal, McRae's, Wackenheim, and Fischgold. We also presented the results of our own research using computer image processing methods. Additionally, we considered the potential for prenatal treatment of certain congenital defects based on the latest research and attempted corrections before birth.

Abstract:Pediatric skulls change rapidly in size and shape during development, especially for children up to 8 years of age. This project was developed to address the gap in understanding of the three-dimensional growth parameters of the human skull during this period and the impact these growth patterns have on fontanelle closure and suture formation. This study offers novel data on the dynamic changes in the anatomy of the skull with the intention of providing better guidance for pediatric surgical care. Craniometric landmarks defined on three-dimensional computed tomography reconstructions were used to map skull development in children aged 0 to 8 years old. A total of 364 datasets were analyzed and statistically representative 3D skulls with anatomical craniometric features such as head shape, bone size, suture and fontanelle closure time were generated for 17 age groups spanning birth to 8 years of age to provide a comprehensive neuroanatomical understanding of how the pediatric skull changes over time. This study indicates that the cranial bones follow a non-linear growth pattern, with the occipital and frontal bones driving the directionality of fontanelle closure and delivers a 3D visualization of the developmental characteristics of the skull providing a landmark resource for understanding the growth dynamics of the human skull. While clinical measurements remain valid approaches for the planning of surgical interventions, these 3D models may provide a more accurate planning paradigm.

Abstract:Background: Unilateral coronal craniosynostosis (UCS) is a congenital disorder resulting from the premature suture fusion, leading to complex primary and compensatory morphologic changes in the shape of not only the calvarium and but also into the skull base. This deformity typically requires surgery to correct the shape of the skull and prevent neurologic sequelae, including increased intracranial pressure, sensory deficits, and cognitive impairment. Methods: The present multicenter study sought to reverse-engineer the bone dysmorphogenesis seen in non-syndromic UCS using a geometric morphometric approach. Computed tomography scans for 26 non-syndromic UCS patients were converted to three-dimensional mesh models. Two hundred thirty-six unique anatomical landmarks and semi-landmarked curves were then plotted on each model, creating wireframe representations of the Patients' skulls. Results: Generalized Procrustes superimposition, Principal Component Analysis, and heatmaps identified significant superior displacement of the ipsilateral orbit ("harlequin" eye deformity), anterior displacement of the ear ipsilateral to the fused coronal suture, acute deviation of midline skull base structures ipsilateral to the fused coronal suture and flattening of the parietal bone and associated failure to expand superiorly. Conclusions: The described technique illustrates the impact of premature coronal suture fusion on the development of the entire skull and proposes how bone dysmorphology contributes to the Patients' neurologic sequelae. By bridging novel basic science methodologies with clinical research, the present study quantitatively describes craniofacial development and bone dysmorphogenesis.

Abstract:The Sima de los Huesos (SH) site has provided a significant collection of hominin remains, including numerous cranial fragments, which have contributed to our understanding of the MP human population. The taxonomic classification of the SH hominins remains a topic of debate, with some studies suggesting a close relationship to Neandertals based on nuclear DNA analysis. The cranial morphology of the SH specimens exhibits a mix of Neandertal‐like features and primitive traits observed in earlier Homo populations, providing insights into the evolutionary pattern of the Neanderthal lineage. This study focuses on the neurocranial traits of the SH population and describes three previously undescribed cranial individuals. The SH cranial collection now comprises 20 nearly complete crania, representing approximately two‐thirds of the estimated population size. The analysis of the SH population reveals variations in robustness, frontal torus development, sagittal keeling, and occipital torus morphology, which may be related to sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic factors. The suprainiac region exhibits notable ontogenetic changes, while suture obliteration patterns do not strictly correlate with dental age. Metric measurements, particularly cranial breadths, highlight significant intrapopulation variation within the SH sample. Compared with other Middle Pleistocene (MP) hominins, the SH cranial vault displays archaic characteristics but differs from Homo erectus and Neandertals. The SH individuals have relatively short and tall cranial vaults, distinguishing them from other MP fossils. These findings contribute to our understanding of the MP human populations and their evolutionary trajectories.

Abstract:Several developmental disorders involve shape abnormalities of the neurocranium, the most common one being craniosynostosis, that affects about 1 in 2000 infants. A key step in determining how these disorders affect neurodevelopment is to establish how the brain and neurocranium co-evolve in the normally developing child. However, due to the scarcity of normally developing infant and pediatric imaging data, there have been a lack of imaging studies pertaining to normal neurocranial development. Here, taking advantage of a large data bank of high quality brain MRI from healthy children ages 0-4 years old, and of a novel conformal geometry-based analysis pipeline, we have been determining a set of statistical atlases of the neurocranium, divided into age groups. In this first part of the study, we focus more specifically on a comparison of 1 and 2 year old infants. Characterizing neurocranium shape changes will enable us to understand how the cranial bones develop in relation to brain development. This in turn will allow a better determination of the effects of neurocranial disorders, which will help inform treatment strategies.

Abstract:Pediatric care providers, pediatricians, pediatric subspecialty physicians, and other health care providers should be able to recognize children with abnormal head shapes that occur as a result of both synostotic and deformational processes. The purpose of this clinical report is to review the characteristic head shape changes, as well as secondary craniofacial characteristics, that occur in the setting of the various primary craniosynostoses and deformations. As an introduction, the physiology and genetics of skull growth as well as the pathophysiology underlying craniosynostosis are reviewed. This is followed by a description of each type of primary craniosynostosis (metopic, unicoronal, bicoronal, sagittal, lambdoid, and frontosphenoidal) and their resultant head shape changes, with an emphasis on differentiating conditions that require surgical correction from those (bathrocephaly, deformational plagiocephaly/brachycephaly, and neonatal intensive care unit-associated skill deformation, known as NICUcephaly) that do not. The report ends with a brief discussion of microcephaly as it relates to craniosynostosis as well as fontanelle closure. The intent is to improve pediatric care providers’ recognition and timely referral for craniosynostosis and their differentiation of synostotic from deformational and other nonoperative head shape changes.

New World cranial deformation practices: historical implications for pathophysiology of cognitive impairment in deformational plagiocephaly

Abstract:Introduction: Throughout history, prehistoric and even some contemporary civilizations have practiced various forms of intentional and unintentional cranial deformation. Plagiocephaly can be the result of craniosynostosis, infant positioning, or other unintentional or intentional deformation. Materials: We reviewed the medical and anthropological literature and the anthropological collections of Arizona State University and the San Diego Museum of Man for evidence of cranial deformation and its possible physiological and cognitive side effects. Evidence of cranial shaping was also sought among art or stone work from representative cultures. Results: The anthropological record and literature attest to the presence of much more severe forms of deformation than that seen as a result of contemporary infant positioning. Despite this evidence, there is no anthropological evidence as to the possible cognitive effects that such deformation may have, although some evidence is reviewed that suggests a possible physiological mechanism for the same. Conclusion: Because we can only view these cultures through the relics of time, any conclusions one might draw from the anthropological and historical record regarding the cognitive effects of head deformation can only be inferred through generalized observations and are tenuous. Nevertheless, there does not seem to be any evidence of negative effect on the societies that have practiced even very severe forms of intentional cranial deformation (e.g., the Olmec and Maya). On the other hand, the physical anthropology and the contemporary developmental literature suggest possible mechanisms for such an effect.
Introducing a new method for classifying skull shape abnormalities related to craniosynostosis

Abstract:Abstract We present a novel technique for classification of skull deformities due to most common craniosynostosis. We included 5 children of every group of the common craniosynostoses (scaphocephaly, brachycephaly, trigonocephaly, and right- and left-sided anterior plagiocephaly) and additionally 5 controls. Our outline-based classification method is described, using the software programs OsiriX, MeVisLab, and Matlab. These programs were used to identify chosen landmarks (porion and exocanthion), create a base plane and a plane at 4 cm, segment outlines, and plot resulting graphs. We measured repeatability and reproducibility, and mean curves of groups were analyzed. All raters achieved excellent intraclass correlation scores (0.994–1.000) and interclass correlation scores (0.989–1.000) for identifying the external landmarks. Controls, scaphocephaly, trigonocephaly, and brachycephaly all have the peak of the forehead in the middle of the curve (180 ° ). In contrary, in anterior plagiocephaly, the peak is shifted (to the left of graph in right-sided and vice versa). Additionally, controls, scaphocephaly, and trigonocephaly have a high peak of the forehead; scaphocephaly has the lowest troughs; in brachycephaly, the width/frontal peak ratio has the highest value with a low frontal peak. Conclusion : We introduced a preliminary study showing an objective and reproducible methodology using CT scans for the analysis of craniosynostosis and potential application of our method to 3D photogrammetry. What is Known: • Diagnosis of craniosynostosis is relatively simple; however, classification of craniosynostosis is difficult and current techniques are not widely applicable. What is New: • We introduce a novel technique for classification of skull deformities due to craniosynostosis, an objective and reproducible methodology using CT scans resulting in characteristic curves. The method is applicable to all 3D-surface rendering techniques. • Using external landmarks and curve analysis, specific and characteristic curves for every type of craniosynostosis related to the specific skull deformities are found.

High-Rate Anisotropic Properties in Human Infant Parietal and Occipital Bone

Abstract:Computational models of infant head impact are limited by the paucity of infant cranial bone material property data, particularly with regard to the anisotropic relationships created by the trabecular fibers in infant bone. We previously reported high-rate material property data for human infant cranial bone tested perpendicular to trabeculae fiber orientation. In this study, we measure the anisotropic properties of human infant cranial bone by analyzing bending modulus parallel to the trabeculae fibers. We tested human bone specimens from nine donors ranging in age from 32 weeks gestational age to 10 months at strain rates of 12.3-30.1 s-1. Bending modulus significantly increased with donor age (p=0.008) and was 13.4 times greater along the fiber direction compared to perpendicular to the fibers. Ultimate stress was greater by 5.1 times when tested parallel to the fibers compared to perpendicular (p=0.067). Parietal bone had a higher modulus and ultimate stress compared to occipital bone, but this trend was not significant, as previously shown perpendicular to fiber orientation. Combined, these data suggest that the pediatric skull is highly age-dependent, anisotropic, and regionally dependent. The incorporation of these characteristics in finite element models of infant head impact will be necessary to advance pediatric head injury research and further our understanding of the mechanisms of head injury in children.
Ossification and midline shape changes of the human fetal cranial base

Abstract:An appreciation of ontogenetic changes to the cranial base is important for understanding the evolution of modern human skull form. Using geometric morphometric techniques, this study explores midline shape variations of the basicranium and midface during human prenatal ontogeny. In particular, the analysis sets out to explore shape variations associated with endochondral ossification and to reassess shape variations previously observed on the basis of angular measures.Fifty-four formalin-preserved human fetuses were imaged using high-resolution MRI. Coordinates for 10 landmarks defining the midline basicranium and midface were acquired and areas of ossification in the midline basioccipital, basisphenoid, and presphenoid cartilages were measured as percentages of overall cranial base area. The results show shape variations with increasing fetal size that are consistent with cranial base retroflexion, anterior facial projection and dorsal facial rotation. These growth variations are centered on the midsphenoid area and are associated with disproportionate variations of sphenoid height and length. Small but significant correlations were observed between ossification of the presphenoid cartilage and components of shape that described, among other variations, sphenoid shortening. While ossification cannot be directly linked with the shape variations observed, it seems likely that bone formation plays a role in modulating the influence of other factors on the fetal cranial base.
A morphometric, neuroanatomical, and behavioral study on the effects of geometric constraint on the growing brain: the methyl 2-cyanoacrylate craniosynostosis model

Abstract:Object: The effects of premature sutural synostosis on the developing brain remain unknown. A model of craniosynostosis in the perinatal rat was used to investigate the morphological and cytoarchitectural changes in the maturing brain as well as the neurobehavioral outcome. Methods: A total of 56 perinatal rats, eight in each subgroup, were used in this study. Hypothermic arrest was induced in the rats and methyl 2-cyanocrylate was applied across the sagittal, coronal, and lambdoidal sutures at postnatal Days 0, 3, and 7. Sham rats underwent similar hypothermic arrest and application of methyl 2-cyanoacrylate but at a site different from the sutural lines. Age-matched rats that did not undergo any procedure were included as normal controls. Serial gross measurements were obtained to chart calvarial growth and computerized tomography scanning was performed to calculate mean calvarial volumes. At postnatal Day 30, the brains were fixed in situ and detailed morphological and cytoarchitectural analysis was conducted. There were no statistical differences in any of the analyses between sham rats and normal age-matched controls. In contrast, calvarial growth rates (analysis of variance, p < 0.05), mean brain weights (t-test, p < 0.01), and anterior-posterior and lateral diameter measurements (t-test, p < 0.01) were different for all synostotic rats compared with sham controls. On cytoarchitectural surveys, focal areas of nodular heterotopia and differences in cell density at the pyramidal cell layer were noted (t-test, p < 0.01). Open field testing also demonstrated excessive exploratory behavior in the synostosed animals. Conclusions: Early pan-calvarial sutural synostosis in the perinatal rat after administration of methyl 2-cyanoacrylate is associated with morphometrical and cytoarchitectural changes in the developing brain.
A Bayesian hierarchical model for classifying craniofacial malformations from CT imaging

Abstract:Single-suture craniosynostosis is a condition of the sutures of the infant's skull that causes major craniofacial deformities and is associated with an increased risk of cognitive deficits and learning/language disabilities. In this paper we adapt to classification of synostostic head shapes a Bayesian methodology that overcomes the limitations of our previously published shape representation and classification techniques. We evaluate our approach in a series of large-scale experiments and show performance superior to those of standard approaches such as Fourier descriptors, cranial spectrum, and Euclidian-distance-based analyses.
An inclusive anatomical network analysis of human craniocerebral topology

Abstract:An anatomical network model of the human brain and skull is presented, as to localise key regions in the system's geometric balance, to identify phenotypic patterns of spatial arrangement, and to understand the influence of these patterns in the evolution of brain morphology. Results reveal the topological relevance of the components that act as intermediaries between the soft and hard tissues of the head, as well as a modular partition that reflects the morphological organisation of the skull. The human brain's complex morphology is spatially constrained by numerous intrinsic and extrinsic physical interactions. Spatial constraints help to identify the source of morphological variability and can be investigated by employing anatomical network analysis. Here, a model of human craniocerebral topology is presented, based on the bony elements of the skull at birth and a previously designed model of the brain. The goal was to investigate the topological components fundamental to the craniocerebral geometric balance, to identify underlying phenotypic patterns of spatial arrangement, and to understand how these patterns might have influenced the evolution of human brain morphology. Analysis of the craniocerebral network model revealed that the combined structure of the body and lesser wings of the sphenoid bone, the parahippocampal gyrus, and the parietal and ethmoid bones are susceptible to sustain and apply major spatial constraints that are likely to limit or channel their morphological evolution. The results also showcase a high level of global integration and efficient diffusion of biomechanical forces across the craniocerebral system, a fundamental aspect of morphological variability in terms of plasticity. Finally, community detection in the craniocerebral system highlights the concurrence of a longitudinal and a vertical modular partition. The former reflects the distinct morphogenetic environments of the three endocranial fossae, while the latter corresponds to those of the basicranium and calvaria.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel explainable AI approach for the objective quantification of craniosynostosis severity, based on a reduced shape representation. This ensures complete patient anonymity and invariance to geometric size and orientation. The proposed severity metric, the "Feature Prominence Score," captures distinct shape characteristics associated with specific classes and strongly correlates with clinical severity scores, providing a metric for objective treatment evaluation. Background Craniosynostosis, a congenital condition characterized by the premature fusion of cranial sutures, necessitates objective methods for evaluating cranial morphology to enhance patient treatment. Current subjective assessments often lead to inconsistent outcomes. This study introduces a novel, quantitative approach to classify craniosynostosis and measure its severity. Methods An artificial neural network was trained to classify normocephalic, trigonocephalic, and scaphocephalic head shapes based on a publicly available dataset of synthetic 3D head models. Each 3D model was converted into a low‐dimensional shape representation based on the distribution of normal vectors, which served as the input for the neural network, ensuring complete patient anonymity and invariance to geometric size and orientation. Explainable AI methods were utilized to highlight significant features when making predictions. Additionally, the Feature Prominence (FP) score was introduced, a novel metric that captures the prominence of distinct shape characteristics associated with a given class. Its relationship with clinical severity scores was examined using the Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient. Results The final model achieved excellent test accuracy in classifying the different cranial shapes from their low‐dimensional representation. Attention maps indicated that the network's attention was predominantly directed toward the parietal and temporal regions, as well as toward the region signifying vertex depression in scaphocephaly. Abstract:The neurocranium changes rapidly in early childhood to accommodate the developing brain. However, developmental disorders may cause abnormal growth of the neurocranium, the most common one being craniosynostosis, affecting about 1 in 2000 children. It is important to understand how the brain and neurocranium develop together to understand the role of the neurocranium in neurodevelopmental outcomes. However, the neurocranium is not as well studied as the human brain in early childhood, due to a lack of imaging data. CT is typically employed to investigate the cranium, but, due to ionizing radiation, may only be used for clinical cases. However, the neurocranium is also visible on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Here, we used a large dataset of MRI images from healthy children in the age range of 1 to 2 years old and extracted the neurocranium. A conformal geometry based analysis pipeline is implemented to determine a set of statistical atlases of the neurocranium. A growth model of the neurocranium will help us understand cranial bone and suture development with respect to the brain, which will in turn inform better treatment strategies for neurocranial disorders.

Abstract:Clinical issue: Malformations of the central nervous system belong to the most common developmental disorders in humans. The clinical presentation of brain malformations is nonspecific including developmental delay, hypotonia, and/or epilepsy. The great heterogeneity concerning etiology, mechanisms of development and morphology is challenging for diagnosis and classification of brain malformations. Thereby recognizing specific malformations is essential for optimal patient management and prognostic evaluation. The aim of this article is to give an overview of several clinically relevant brain malformations occurring from different disrupted developmental processes in brain formation. Standard radiological methods: Several brain malformations are already diagnosed during routine ultrasound in pregnancy. However pre- and postnatal magnetic resonance imaging remains the gold standard in detecting the partially subtle changes and to classify the malformations. Methodical innovations: Advances in pre- and postnatal neuroimaging techniques and increasing investigation of genetic mechanisms underlying brain formation and its abnormalities have led to a better understanding of embryologic development and pathogeneses of brain malformations. Conclusion: Besides patient's history and clinical phenotype, neuroimaging plays a key role in diagnosis. Not always a specific diagnosis can be made, but neuroimaging patterns often enable a focused genetic testing and therefore are revolutionary for etiologic and prognostic assignment. Basic knowledge of brain development facilitates understanding and classifying of structural brain abnormalities.
A physico-mechanical model of postnatal craniofacial growth in human

Abstract:Our fundamental understanding of the physico-mechanical forces that drive the size and shape changes of the cranium during ontogeny are limited. Biomechanical models based on finite element method present a huge opportunity to address this critical gap in our knowledge. Here, we describe a validated computational framework to predict normal craniofacial growth. Our results demonstrated that this approach is capable of predicting the growth of calvaria, face, and skull base. We highlighted the crucial role of skull base in antero-posterior growth of the face and also demonstrated the contribution of the maxillary expansion to the dorsoventral growth of the face and its interplay with the orbits. These findings highlight the importance of physical interactions of different components of the craniofacial system. The computational framework described here serves as a powerful tool to study fundamental questions in developmental biology and to advance treatment of conditions affecting the craniofacial system such as craniosynostosis.
A comprehensive analysis of human cranial morphology: multiscale characterization and statistical analysis

Abstract:Understanding the structure–property relationship of the human cranium is crucial for enhancing personalized head protection design and improving injury prevention criteria. This study presents a thorough spatial analysis of cranial morphology at both the macro- and micro-scale through micro-CT scanning. Two statistical quantifiers (i.e., Cortico-trabecular thickness (CoTb.Th) and Cortico-trabecular spacing (CoTb.Sp)) are defined here to characterize the micro-structural morphology in both the cortical and cancellous tables. A new adaptive layer segmentation method is proposed that considers the micro-structural variation to quantify the porosity threshold between the inner table, the diploë and the outer table. Then, statistical analysis was employed to investigate the interaction between donor information (e.g., age, sex, and sample extraction location) and structural characteristics (maximum and average porosity, CoTb.Th and CoTb.Sp). The morphological results revealed that the peak parallel porosity of 55 30% can be found in the diploë region, while the perpendicular porosity remained essentially stable and fluctuated between a range of 10–15%. Furthermore, the layer segmentation results demonstrated that the porosity threshold between the inner table and the diploë was 29.14 3.93%, and 46.50 4.80% between the diploë and the outer table. In addition, the statistical analyses indicated that age ( ) and sex ( ) were the most influential factors affecting maximum and average porosity. The novelty of this work stems from the comprehensive understanding of the morphological features of human crania, which is needed to advance the physical surrogate models of human skull, contributing to the mechanical testing of head protection devices and improvement of injury criteria.

A special case of anencephaly in an early-born baby with an exagerated prognastic face: further example for human devolution

Abstract:A 7-month-old baby was born in a village near Iskenderun (Turkey) where "Unertan Syndrome" with quadrupedality and primitive cognitive abilities was discovered. The clinical diagnosis was anencephaly. However, his head did not show the classical symptoms of anencephaly because it was covered with bony structures. The baby has an ape-like, prognasthic head with low-set ears and flapped ear flaps. The other parts of the body were similar to humans with broad shoulders and a short neck. This may be a further example of human devolution, which was first reported by Tan (2005, 2006a,b,c). A genetic defect affecting the head development including brain may be responsible for the reappearance of the ape-like head in a human being. This human devolution, or evolution in reverse, suggests that the same gene or gene-pool as well as the interactions between genes may be responsible for the transition from our ancestors into human beings with regard to an orthognasthic head, and brain development.
Bone fusion in normal and pathological development is constrained by the network architecture of the human skull

Abstract:The premature fusion of cranial bones, craniosynostosis, affects the correct development of the skull producing morphological malformations in newborns. To assess the susceptibility of each craniofacial articulation to close prematurely, we used a network model of the skull to quantify the link reliability (an index based on stochastic block modeling and Bayesian inference) of each articulation. We show that, of the 93 human skull articulations at birth, the few articulations that are associated with nonsyndromic craniosynostosis conditions have statistically significant lower reliability scores than the others. In a similar way, articulations that close during the normal postnatal development of the skull have also lower reliability scores than those articulations that persist through adult live. These results indicate a relationship between the architecture of the skull network and the specific articulations that close during normal development and in pathological conditions. Our findings suggest that the topological arrangement of skull bones might act as an epigenetic factor, predisposing some articulations to closure, both in normal and pathological development, and also affecting the long-term evolution of the skull.
