Abstract:Integrable hierarchy based on the constrained Osp(2$\mid%2) connection is considered. The connection with 2D supergravity and some analogies with the W$_3^{(2)}$ case are given. It is shown that super Virasoro transformations are symmetries of tha hierarchy.

Abstract:Following the construction of a model for the planar supersymmetric Chaplygin gas, supersymmetric fluid mechanics in (1+1)-dimensions is obtained from the light-cone parametrized Nambu-Goto superstring in (2+1)-dimensions. The lineal model is completely integrable and can be formulated neatly using Riemann coordinates. Infinite towers of conserved charges and supercharges are exhibited. They form irreducible representations of a dynamical (hidden) SO(2,1) symmetry group.

Second-order superintegrable systems and Weylian geometry

Abstract:Second-order (maximally) conformally superintegrable Hamiltonian systems of abundant type are re-examined, revealing their underlying Weylian geometry. This allows one to naturally extend the concept of c-superintegrability from the realm of conformal geometries to that of Weylian manifolds. The resulting structures, in any dimension, are characterised by conformally invariant equations.

Abstract:This thesis is roughly organized into two parts. The first one (the first three chapters), expository in nature, attempts to place the current work in context: at first historically, but then focusing on the Lax formalism and the Adler--Gel'fand--Dickey scheme for hierarchies of the KdV type. The second part (the last four chapters) comprises the main body of this work. It begins by developing the supersymmetric Lax formalism, introducing the ring of formal superpseudodifferential operators and the associated Poisson structures. We discuss three supersymmetric extensions of the KP hierarchy (MRSKP, \SKP2, and JSKP). We define and compute their additional symmetries and we find that the algebra of additional symmetries are in all three cases isomorphic to the Lie algebra of superdifferential operators. We discuss a new reduction of \SKP2 and the relation between MRSKP and \SKP2 is clarified. Finally we consider the (so far) only integrable hierarchy to have played a role in noncritical superstring theory (sKdV-B). We identify it, prove its bihamiltonian integrability, and extend it by odd flows. We close with a discussion of new integrable supersymmetrizations of the KdV-like hierarchies suggested by the study of sKdV-B. Black holes in supergravity and integrability

Abstract:Stationary black holes of massless supergravity theories are described by certain geodesic curves on the target space that is obtained after dimensional reduction over time. When the target space is a symmetric coset space we make use of the group-theoretical structure to prove that the second order geodesic equations are integrable in the sense of Liouville, by explicitly constructing the correct amount of Hamiltonians in involution. This implies that the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism can be applied, which proves that all such black hole solutions, including non-extremal solutions, possess a description in terms of a (fake) superpotential. Furthermore, we improve the existing integration method by the construction of a Lax integration algorithm that integrates the second order equations in one step instead of the usual two step procedure. We illustrate this technology with a specific example.

N=2 Chiral Supergravity in (10 + 2)-Dimensions As Consistent Background for Super (2 + 2)-Brane

Abstract:We present a theory of N=2 chiral supergravity in (10+2)-dimensions. This formulation is similar to N=1 supergravity presented recently using null-vectors in 12D. In order to see the consistency of this theory, we perform a simple dimensional reduction to ten-dimensions, reproducing the type IIB chiral supergravity. We also show that our supergravity can be consistent background for super (2+2)-brane theory, satisfying fermionic invariance of the total action. Such supergravity theory without manifest Lorentz invariance had been predicted by the recent F-theory in twelve-dimensions.

Superintegrable systems on conformal surfaces

Abstract:We reconsider non-degenerate second order superintegrable systems in dimension two as geometric structures on conformal surfaces. This extends a formalism developed by the authors, initially introduced for (pseudo-)Riemannian manifolds of dimension three and higher. The governing equations of non-degenerate second order superintegrability in dimension two are structurally significantly different from those valid in higher dimensions. Specifically, we find conformally covariant structural equations, allowing one to classify the (conformal classes of) non-degenerate second order superintegrable systems on conformal surfaces geometrically. We then specialise to second order properly superintegrable systems on surfaces with a (pseudo-)Riemannian metric and obtain structural equations in accordance with the known equations for Euclidean space. We finally give a single explicit set of purely algebraic equations defining the variety parametrising such systems on all constant curvature surfaces.

Abstract:We construct two-dimensional supergravity theories endowed with a positive cosmological constant, that admit de Sitter vacua. We consider the cases of $\mathcal{N}=1$ as well as $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, and couple the supergravity to a superconformal field theory with the same amount of supersymmetry. Upon fixing a supersymmetric extension of the Weyl gauge, the theories are captured, at the quantum level, by supersymmetric extensions of timelike Liouville theory with $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry respectively. The theories exhibit good ultraviolet properties and are amenable to a variety of techniques such as systematic loop expansions and, in the $\mathcal{N}=2$ case, supersymmetric localization. Our constructions offer a novel path toward a precise treatment of the Euclidean gravitational path integral for de Sitter, and in turn, the Gibbons-Hawking entropy of the de Sitter horizon. We argue that the supersymmetric localization method applied to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory must receive contributions from boundary terms in configuration space. We also discuss how these theories overcome several obstructions that appear upon combining de Sitter space with supersymmetry.

Abstract:Based on a class of extended Lie superalgebras that we constructed, we present a method for generating 2+1 dimensional nonisospectral super integrable hierarchies. By considering some applications, we derive three kinds of 2+1 dimensional nonisospectral super Dirac integrable hierarchies and AKNS integrable hierarchies. Moreover, super Hamiltonian structures of these 2+1 dimensional super integrable hierarchies are obtained.

Abstract:Supersymmetry is formulated for integrable models based on the $sl(2|1)$ loop algebra endowed with a principal gradation. The symmetry transformations which have half-integer grades generate supersymmetry. The $sl(2|1)$ loop algebra leads to N=2 supersymmetric mKdV and sinh-Gordon equations. The corresponding N=1 mKdV and sinh-Gordon equations are obtained via reduction induced by twisted automorphism. Our method allows for a description of a non-local symmetry structure of supersymmetric integrable models.

On Supergravity and Noncritical Strings

Abstract:Motivated by the long-term goal of finding holographic descriptions for ${\mathcal N}=1$ and ${\mathcal N}=2$ super QCD, we revisit the subject of ''noncritical'' superstring theory. Focusing on string models with 6d super Poincaré invariance, we provide a careful worldsheet derivation of the leading-order effective theories for the lowest modes. We identify them as $\textit{seven}$-dimensional, $\textit{maximally supersymmetric}$ gauged supergravities: the $SO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIA and the $ISO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIB. The same theories also arise as consistent truncations on $S^3$ of the 10d IIB and IIA supergravities, respectively, where the chirality flip is as expected from T-duality. These effective supergravities should be interpreted in the following sense. The noncritical string can be viewed as a special case of a discrete series of backgrounds labelled by an integer $k$ (which counts the number of NS5 branes in a certain duality frame); the ''noncritical'' value is $k=2$, while for $k \to \infty$ one recovers a weakly-curved 10d target space. The effective supergravities described here give an accurate description of the interactions among the lowest modes for $k \to \infty$, with higher derivative corrections suppressed by powers of $1/k$. We discuss BPS solutions of the 7d gauged supergravities and their uplift to 10d solutions. In particular, we find a novel class of solutions with RR flux, parametrized by a function of three variables that solves an elegant PDE. While we cannot solve the PDE in closed form except in trivial cases, we confirm that our solutions correspond to a 10d IIA Hanany-Witten setup with continuous distributions of both ''color'' D4 branes and ''flavor'' D6 branes.

Abstract:For a given nonlinear integrable equation in 2 + 1 dimensions, an approach is described to construct the hierarchies of equations and relevant Lie algebraic properties. The commutability and noncommutability of equations of the flow, their symmetries and mastersymmetries are then derived as direct results of these algebraic properties. The details for the modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvilli equation are shown as an example and the main results for the (2 + 1)-dimensional Caudrey-Dodd-Gibbon-Katera-Sawada equation are given.

We show that the spin chain associated to the planar dilation operator of $ \mathcal{N}=2 $ superconformal QCD fails to be integrable at two loops. In our analysis we focus on a closed SU(2|1) sector, whose two-loop spin chain we fix by symmetry arguments (up to a few undetermined coefficients). It turns out that the Yang-Baxter equation for magnon scattering is not satisfied in this sector. On the other hand, we suggest that the closed SU(2, 1|2) sector, which exists in any $ \mathcal{N}=2 $ superconformal gauge theory, may be integrable to all loops. We summarize the known results in the literature that are consistent with this conjecture.

Abstract:This paper presents a new perspective on integrability in theories of gravity. We show how the stationary, axisymmetric sector of General Relativity can be described by the boundary dynamics of a four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory. This approach shows promise for simplifying solution generating methods in both General Relativity and higher-dimensional supergravity theories. The four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory presented generalises those for flat space integrable models by introducing a space-time dependent branch cut in the spectral plane. We also make contact with twistor space approaches to integrability, showing how the branch cut defects of four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory arise from a discrete reduction of six-dimensional Chern-Simons theory.

The surprising structure of non-relativistic 11-dimensional supergravity

Abstract:We study a non-relativistic limit of 11-dimensional supergravity. This limit leads to a theory with an underlying membrane Newton-Cartan geometry. Consistency of the non-relativistic limit requires the imposition of constraints, requiring that certain bosonic and fermionic torsions and curvatures vanish. We investigate the implications of two versions of these constraints. In one version, we keep only 16 supersymmetry transformations, leading to a simple (purely bosonic) constraint structure but an unusual realisation of the supersymmetry algebra which does not close into diffeomorphisms. In the other, we keep all 32 supersymmetry transformations. This requires a complicated sequence of bosonic and fermionic constraints, eventually involving three derivatives of bosonic fields. We argue, with a linearised calculation, that this sequence of constraints terminates. Furthermore, we show that there exists a family of supersymmetric solutions satisfying these constraints, containing the non-relativistic limit of the M2 supergravity solution recently obtained by Lambert and Smith as a background relevant for non-relativistic holography.

Poincaré Duality for Supermanifolds, Higher Cartan Structures and Geometric Supergravity

Abstract:We study relative differential and integral forms and their cohomology on families of supermanifolds and prove a relative version of Poincaré duality relating the cohomology of differential and integral forms in different geometric categories. In the smooth category, we complement Poincaré duality by proving the compactly supported Poincaré lemmas for both differential and integral forms, filling a gap in the literature. We then use our results to study supergravity. In particular, we describe supergravity in dimension three via higher Cartan structures, which can be regarded as certain classes of connections taking values in $L_\infty$-superalgebras. We then use relative Poincaré duality to state a general form of the action principle in a mathematically rigorous manner. This interpolates in a unified fashion between two equivalent formulations of supergravity, one based on the superspace approach and the other on the group manifold approach in the physics literature.

Generalized Symmetries in Supergravities and Superconformal Field Theories via String Theory

Abstract:In this dissertation, we study the generalized symmetries in supergravities and superconformal field theories from the string theory perspective. Part one is devoted to the study of string universality in high spacetime dimensions. Answering this question requires us to combine the following two approaches. In the "top-down" approach, We focus on supergravity theories in 7, 8, and 9 dimensional spacetime with 16 supercharges. We emphasize two discrete aspects of these theories: generalized global symmetries and frozen singularities. We give an exhaustive classification of IIB supergravity theory in 8D, particularly emphasizing these two discrete aspects. In the "bottom-up" approach, we present a consistency condition of general 8D supergravity theories involving their higher-form symmetries use it to rule out many global structures of the gauge groups in 8D supergravity theories that do not admit string theory constructions. Part two studies the generalized global symmetries of geometrically-engineered quantum field theories via string theory. We examined branes wrapping on relative topological cycles that give heavy defects that are charged under generalized global symmetries, which can then be used to construct new lower-dimensional theories. By investigating the string theory origin of the topological operators, we provide a general construction of these topological operators in the context of geometric engineering as branes wrapped on the homological cycles in the asymptotic boundary of the internal geometry. We illustrate this proposal by determining non-invertible 2-form symmetries in 6D superconformal field theories. Furthermore, by wrapping type IIB 7-brane on the entire asymptotic boundary of the internal manifold, we explicitly give a unified string-theoretic construction of two different types of field-theoretic non-invertible duality defects.
