Abstract:Questions of crises occupy a central place in recent Chinese fiction. On one hand, novelists seek ways to develop a new sense of crises for those dispossessed by rural reform and nation-wide economic exploitation. Mo Yan's Frog, Yu Hua's The Seventh Day, Yan Lianke's Enjoyment and Dream of Ding Village, and Liu Qingbang's Red Coal, etc., exemplify this concern. On the other hand, numerous writers struggle to exhibit the deteriorating facet of local Chinese government that characterizes corruption and ill practice. Thus, while literary critics have celebrated the freedom to explore a broader range of subjects than corruption and bureaucracy, a dominant strain in the fiction of the past 16 years has urged the reader to look into the nuances of guilt and responsibility. Moral depravity, profit driven material pursuit, disenchantments and political interrogations have marked an era of paramount ethical issues that might embody global crises and disasters. Drawing on postsocialism, environmentalism, and social transformation, I will explore how contemporary Chinese novelists have complicated an ethics based on global human disasters.

Abstract:The narration paradigm of the novels, which thernatically relate to Culture Revolution, is rather monotonous at the new historical stage. Most writers take up the politically authoritative point of view to criticize the ultra- left political line during the Cultural Revolution period, thus, the emotional and psychological hurt imposed on the Chinese populace by the wrong political line is displayed, so is the alienated human nature and the twisted soul under the high political tension. Yan Lianke, however, from a new point of view, gives explanations for what caused the upheaval of Cultural Revolution in his latest work Hard as -water through realistic and symbolic artistic description. Thus Yan opens up a new area for Cultural Revolution depiction in novels. This paper intends to discuss some of the features which exist in Hard as water in the narration of Cultural Revolution history.

Abstract:Starting with an analysis of sociality and social rootstock of "suffering", the paper discusses how the narrative of common peasants about their lives can be the history. The narrative of suffering from peasants who called themselves "suffering people" composed importantly oral data about Chinese rural social life in the latter half of 20th century, and became significant academic resources as well as the special field of knowledge production. The sociality of "suffering" established the organic connection between the ordinary life of common people and the macro social history, and showed the need of revealing the roots of "suffering" from the perspective of social structure and power relationship. When we consider civilization as everyday-life practice of common people, the life history of peasants can be connected with the process of the macro social history, and their trivial stories, as organic parts of grand narrative, can be provided with extraordinary meanings. That is the process of making history from everyday life of common people.

Abstract:Through a comprehensive discussion of the historical evolution, themes and imagery, characterisation, language and style, and contemporary values and influences of vernacular narratives in modern and contemporary Chinese literature, this paper reveals the unique manifestations of vernacular narratives and their profound connotations at different historical stages. With their unique perspectives and profound social insights, vernacular narratives depict the life of rural China, reflecting the realities of social change and cultural inheritance. Writers such as Lu Xun, Shen Congwen, and Mo Yan, through their respective classic works, not only enriched the themes and techniques of literary creation, but also provided readers with an important window to understand rural life and social reality. In contemporary times, vernacular narratives continue to play an important role by focusing on rural issues and preserving cultural memories, arousing people's identification with and concern for rural culture. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the unique position and significance of vernacular narratives in contemporary Chinese literature and to explore their inspiration and contribution to contemporary literary creation through a multi-angle analysis of vernacular narratives.

Abstract:This paper aims to examine the psychological conflicts and problems of self-identification that occurred when writers outside the community attributed to the community, focusing on Park Young-joon's novels in liberation period, from the perspective of the narrative of love. In the literature of Park Young-joon, the issue of his track record in Manchuria and his transfer is important. This has been mainly discussed from the perspective of the author's 'self-identification'. However, compared to other writers at the same time, Park did not reveal his past actively or express his beliefs persuasively. Rather, it can be seen that he expressed his longing for recognition through the the narrative of love by passive characters. Park Young-joon's works during the liberation period show a significant change in trend from the establishment of the separate government. Prior to the establishment, many works deal with the question of how to liquidate the past and live a new life. In addition, the characters attempted to seek a positive outlook by dealing with the subject of recognition, development, and inclusion through love. In addition, many works have narrated their experiences in Manchuria. In the world of his works, if colonial works are centered on the story of breaking wishes and fantasies in Manchuria, post-liberation works tend to cover up the past and protect himself. However, after the establishment of the separate government, in the world of Park Young-jun's works, “love” is reserved, and there is a characteristic that no positive future is sought or progress is made. Rather, it is depicted as the main theme of the separation and disconnection of characters who want to love. Park Young-jun's works in liberation period have something in common that most of them are based on a longing for recognition. While the narrative of Manchuria are works that seek to strengthen the rights and solidarity among members of the community by differentiating the world outside the Korea, love narratives have something in common that all the characters surrounding love are based on a longing for recognition. These characteristics appear in his works as detailed changes in political and historical reality after liberation.

Abstract:The revolutionary historical novels, which appeared during the 17 years after the People's Republic of China was founded (1949——1966), are the important production of contemporary literature. In these novels, there formed tense tension relationship between traditional forms and revolutionary narration, while tradition was once treated as the secondary position of "form". However, the practical reading effect of the novels in that period, together with the hot trend of "the red classics" which existed from the 1990s till now, has brought us favorable opportunities to re-understand these novels. Among the novels, the narration in "The Song of Youth" is especially outstanding. Analyzing the duet of traditional narration and revolutionary narration can be regarded as the special and typical announcement to the narration in "the red classics".

Abstract:Camel Xiangzi has rich connotations as far as its text is concerned.Its aesthetics in narrative is different from traditional novels.The work concentrated on the three times of ups and downs of Qiangzi's rickshaw purchase and pursuit of love.That is to say,Xiangzi underwent three times of ups and downs in physical and mental world,which was how his tragic life came to be.It was the incarnation of Lao She's pessimistic consciousness and fatalism.Hence,we can see that Lao She had penetrated into the deep sense of human nature in terms of reflections of nationalism,in which he made explorations of life from ontological viewpoint.The superorganic aesthetics of his works implies Lao She's innovation in novel creation and his exquisite knowledge of Western and Chinese cultures,on which the new narrative guidelines of literature narration was formed,i.e.,"the mental literature" of "mutual use of humans and things".

Abstract:: Villages and towns are unique cultural spaces in Chinese society, carrying specific cultural and power structure. Wei Zhang's description of the countryside accepted the rural factors in Xun Lu's novels and put forward new changes under the background of economic reform and urbanization in the new era. This paper firstly presents the folklore and ancient metaphors in Lu Town - Wei Zhuang and Wali Town from the spatial perspective and discusses the characters and their traits nurtured in the towns. In the second part, the tensions between the roles of the squire and the underclass, the basic power and the clan power, and the male power and the female power are analyzed in the context of the power structure of the countryside. There are also comparisons between the images and fates of characters portrayed by Lu and by Zhang. The third section focuses on the individuals’ contradictory mentality in the process of urbanization. Through The Ancient Ship, Zhang criticizes the remaining brutality of the countryside and points out its future through suffering and confusion. By comparing the writings on the countryside of Lu and Zhang from a spatial and temporal context, we can learn about social changes in different times and the writers’ thoughts on the humanity in different political settings.

Abstract:When reflecting on the Chinese one‐child policy, most accounts have focused on its social, political, and economic implications, which are usually explained by means of statistics. As a literary scholar, I think that the Chinese family‐planning policy should also be studied in terms of ethical and moral problems in the larger context of human identity. This more comprehensive perspective has mostly been ignored or hidden on purpose, and it will require the complexity of creative writing to embrace the larger context. Wa (Frog, 2009), a novel by Mo Yan, the Chinese Nobel Prize winner in 2012, is one of the few literary works that deal with the impact of and the responses to the one‐child policy from this point of view. Integrating letter writing, fiction, and drama, the novel experiments with its narrative to confront readers with the vulnerability, trauma, and redemption of those who became victims or survivors of the Chinese family‐planning policy for over 30 years. Supported by theories of trauma and resilience, this article shows how literature, with its multifocal creative complexity, is capable of breaking the silence and giving voice to victims that may bring them beyond victimhood.

Abstract:By scrutinizing themes of areas in novels of the 1950s and 60s in China from the perspective of modernity,this paper attempts to consider both the historical rationality and the excessive ideological inclination of representation in novels of themes.Since the Chinese revolution aims at reestablishing history upon the social basis with poor peasants as its principal body,a new type of history in culture should be developed accordingly by repelling the enlightenment culture of Chinese modernity based on national bourgeoisie and by establishing a type of culture with peasants and the area as the principal body.As the initial resource for the establishment of socialist revolutionary literature,the works by Zhao Shuli did not portray intense class struggle or contain descriptions of bloody violence,because works of such mild emotions as those by Zhao Shuli were then needed to console peasants,which indicates the practical relationship between literature and revolution.As for socialist revolution,literature is needed not only to delineate radical prospective images but also to actually comfort society mainly composed of peasants by way of traditional artistic modes of expression loved the people.This is the very paradox between the revolutionariness of ideology and the national features of the artistic pattern embodied by the rural subject matter.

Abstract:“North-East writer is an “exile literary group which appears in modern national defense war and its local narrative is multi-dimensional. “Anti-Japanese discourse and the intense national consciousness are the obvious level; “class discourse is the “left-wing indication, but not the focus of its local narration; its social criticism, cultural criticism and free, strong life consciousness are integrated, inheriting the proposition of enlightenment of May Fourth Movement, while distinct from the style of central plains culture beyond Shan-hai Juncture. All these similarities are embodied in the “landscape picture, “custom picture and “picture of local custom and practice which are full of cultural implications of the North-east area.

Abstract:The daily life narration is distinctive in Shanghai modern literature history, and the distinctiveness has lost after the People's Republic of China was founded and Shanghai was reformed as the center of bourgeois thought. The daily life in literature in Shanghai has returned and developed, demonstrating an active desire for survival since the middle of eighties. The daily life is colorful in form in the nineties. This paper describes the development of daily life narration in Shanghai in the contemporary literature, uncloaking the soul transmutation inside it.

Northeast Narrative in Overseas Chinese New Immigrant Novels since the 21st Century

Abstract:Among the overseas Chinese new immigrant novels,narration of Northeast China has its unique feature even if compared to the "narration of Shanghai"or "narration of Wenzhou"which has been well known. It focuses on the description of the regional customs and cultural features of Northeast China,and usually also mixes the innovation and renovation. The authors propagate the regional customs and landform from two aspects,i. e.,land and people. The overseas Chinese new immigrant novels since the 21 st century not only inherit the artistic dimension and the aesthetic ideas of the social customs,the natural landscape and the local ethnic flavor,but also further emphasize the wild power,freedom,tolerance and vitality of Northeast people and their local cultures.

Abstract:Liu Heng can be regarded as one of the important Beijing-flavored writers because of his novel The Happy life of Garrulous Zhang Da-min.The narrative about tribulation in the novel shows us the strong tenacity of common people at the bottom of our society.The wisdom in Zhang Da-min's survival has something in common with the traditional living art of Beijing culture.However,in Zhang's attitude to life there is something to be guarded.That is,the precondition of tenacity and optimism is merely the fact that one has been subjected to the limitation of life and substance,and that it even includes the tolerance to the unjust reality of the society.

Abstract:At the time when the pre-modern, modern and post-modern coexist in the same space and time, the denotation and connotation of the Chinese provincial novel have changed greatly, and how to redefine its concepts and border has become an urgent task. The fact that the farmers who had lost their land entered cities not only changes the totality of productive relations in urban cultures, but also changes the traditional Chinese ideology owing to the conflicts between the provincial and urban cultures that have filtered into different kinds of forms of artistic descriptions, especially the horizon of provincial novels. In the three kinds of descriptive horizons of provincial novels at present, the dilemma and the loss of values that the writing subjects face has become the bottleneck for the creation of provincial novels. In such a special and complicated cultural situation in which three cultures are involved in both conflicts and integration, it is a great challenge for the Chinese provincial novelists to make ideological and aesthetic choices, but meanwhile, it is also a very good opportunity for them to re-integrate their provincial experiences in order to make a greater achievement.

Abstract:Since the very initial stage of his creative writing Shen Congwen's consciousness of the and his theoretical ideas were intertwined with each other,presenting a paradoxical relationship in the later course of his narrative career.As a stylist,his orientation is revealed in his inner paradoxical vision of the narrative model and conceptual theories of the novel.In the early 1930s his maturity is found in his conscious and deep construction of the story-telling context.His consciousness of the context is,in the meantime,embodied in his consciousness of the novel.Therefore his creative writing exerts not only in the gradual progress of evolution from the pattern of to the mode of modern fiction,but also a hard exploration of the narrative meaning.Finally with his consciousness of narration,he transcends the dichotomy of story and fiction,and comes to the some personal identity.An examination of his creative work in the 1930s and 1940s,brings light to the process of how a country man breaks through into the city,gradually turning into a modern lonely metropolitan man in the university system,and at last completing the symbolic transformation from the story-teller into self-annihilation.
