From the "story" to "fiction"——on the Narrative Course of Shen Congwen

Abstract:Since the very initial stage of his creative writing Shen Congwen's consciousness of the and his theoretical ideas were intertwined with each other,presenting a paradoxical relationship in the later course of his narrative career.As a stylist,his orientation is revealed in his inner paradoxical vision of the narrative model and conceptual theories of the novel.In the early 1930s his maturity is found in his conscious and deep construction of the story-telling context.His consciousness of the context is,in the meantime,embodied in his consciousness of the novel.Therefore his creative writing exerts not only in the gradual progress of evolution from the pattern of to the mode of modern fiction,but also a hard exploration of the narrative meaning.Finally with his consciousness of narration,he transcends the dichotomy of story and fiction,and comes to the some personal identity.An examination of his creative work in the 1930s and 1940s,brings light to the process of how a country man breaks through into the city,gradually turning into a modern lonely metropolitan man in the university system,and at last completing the symbolic transformation from the story-teller into self-annihilation.
