Abstract:Talks given at the V Taller de Particulas y Campos (V-TPyC) and V Taller Latinoam. de Fenomenologia de las Interac. Fundam. (V-TLFIF), Puebla, Mexico, 10/30 - 11/3 1995. These lectures are devoted to elementary particle physicists and assume the reader has very little or no knowledge of cosmology and astrophysics. After a brief historical introduction to the development of modern cosmology and astro-particles in which the Hot Big Bang model is defined, the Robertson-Walker metric and the dynamics of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology are discussed in section 2. In section 3 the main observational features of the Universe are reviewed, including a description of our neighbourhood, homogeneity and isotropy, the cosmic background radiation, the expansion, the age and the matter content of the Universe. A brief account of the thermal history of the Universe follows in section 4, and relic abundances are discussed in section 5. Section 6 is devoted to primordial nucleosynthesis, section 7 to structure formation in the Universe and section 8 to the possibility of detection of the dark matter in the halo of our galaxy.

Abstract:This is the summary of two lectures that aim to give an overview of cosmology. I will not try to be too rigorous in derivations, nor to give a full historical overview. The idea is to provide a "taste" of cosmology and some of the interesting topics it covers. The standard cosmological model is presented and I highlight the successes of cosmology over the past decade or so. Keys to the development of the standard cosmological model are observations of the cosmic microwave background and of large-scale structure, which are introduced. Inflation and dark energy and the outlook for the future are also discussed. Abstract:We are experiencing a period of extreme intellectual effervescence in the area of cosmology. A huge volume of observational data in unprecedented quantity and quality and a more consistent theoretical framework propelled cosmology to an era of precision, turning the discipline into a cutting-edge area of contemporary science. Observations with type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia), showed that the expanding Universe is accelerating, an unexplained fact in the traditional decelerated model. Identifying the cause of this acceleration is the most fundamental problem in the area. As in the scientific renaissance, the solution will guide the course of the discipline in the near future and the possible answers (whether dark energy, some extension of general relativity or a still unknown mechanism) should also leverage the development of physics. In this context, without giving up a pedagogical approach, we present an overview of both the main theoretical results and the most significant observational discoveries of cosmology in the last 100 years. The saga of cosmology will be presented in a trilogy. In this article (Part I), based on the articles by Einstein, de Sitter, Friedmann, Lema\^itre and Hubble, we will describe the period between the origins of cosmology and the discovery of Universal expansion (1929). In Part II, we will see the period from 1930 to 1997, closing with the old standard decelerated model. The Part III will be entirely devoted to the accelerated model of the universe, the cosmic paradigm of the XXI century.

Abstract:The limitations of current technology do not allow one to foresee the expansion of the humankind beyond our planet for at least a few decades. Furthermore, the laws of physics, as for as they are known, preclude any form of traveling beyond the speed of light, as well as any viable and stable space-time shortcuts (wormholes, warp-drives, etc) that would facilitate cosmic traveling. Given the vastness of the Universe these are insurmountable obstacles for any {\it in situ} exploration of the cosmos beyond our most immediate cosmic neighbourhood. Nevertheless, the Universe is transparent and contains countless sources of visible light. Actually, in the last decades, technological developments have made possible to observe the cosmos throughout most of the electromagnetic spectrum as well as to perform dynamical studies that allow perceiving the presence of invisible components such as black holes, dark matter and dark energy. In this respect, humankind has then been given the opportunity to unravel the inner workings of the cosmos and through this process be part of the cosmic habitat. In this contribution various forms of cosmological thinking will be discussed, from some myths of creation till some of the latest scientific discoveries.

Abstract:The structure, formation and evolution of the Universe were some of the main topics in the scientific debates during the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe. They involved novel ideas on the cosmos, which concerned aspects that were not considered before so emphatically, and which were fundamental for the future development of astronomy. This paper presents a brief account of several milestones within the gradual definition of pre-galactic systems: the historical role of the tradition of the plurality of worlds, the significance of Descartes, and the introduction of the Milky Way and nebulae in the discourses around the cosmic structure.

Abstract:Albert Einstein visited Spain only once, precisely one hundred years ago. The circumstances, of a very different kind, of this visit will be explained here. In special, some important events happened to Einstein during that period, which, eventually, were key for converting modern cosmology into a genuine physical theory. Among them is the famous Einstein-Friedmann controversy, first, on the mathematical validity of Friedmann's equations and, later, their possible usefulness as a reliable tool to describe the real world. A summary of the deepest ideas underlying Einstein's contributions to the theory of relativity, which he had already completed before his visit, will precede the discussion, also supplemented with a description, in very simple terms, of the three main relativistic theories, namely Galileo's one, and Einstein's special and general theory. They pave the way towards a definitive theory of total relativity, so far unattainable. It will be recalled that the most general relativity principle, faithfully reflecting Ernst Mach's far-reaching ideas, might have much to do with the symmetry-breaking paradigm, a most crucial tool in quantum field theory and high energy physics.

Abstract:The presentations in the 2nd Hellenic Cosmology Workshop covered a broad range of cosmological subjects. Following the analogy with the architectural masters of Ancient Greece, the contributions are presented in ``architectural'' sessions. The session on the ``Architects'' involves ``fundamental cosmology'', focussing on the topology and geometry of our Universe and the fundamental physical laws and processes at work in the first decisive moments of the (Very) Early Universe. Following these cosmic blueprints, the ``Constructors'' set out to present the ultimate realization of the cosmic framework. This concerns the search for the best available estimates of the parameters characterizing the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric. The specification of these cosmic measures paves the way for the ``Interior Decorators'' to take care of the cosmic ``Infrastructure''. This involves the patterns and morphology of Megaparsec scale cosmic structure and its emergence through gravitational instability, as well as aspects concerning the rise of galaxies through the complex interplay of gravitational, hydrodynamic, radiative, stellar and other dissipative processes.

Abstract:Both the basic educational contents for students and study programs for science teachers include several topics in physics and astronomy, from the simplest ones to others as advanced as nuclear fusion to explain stellar evolution and space-time geometry for an approach to modern cosmology. In all these subjects, and most often in the simplest ones, alternative conceptions emerge, as both groups reach science course with preconstructed and consistent models of the universe surrounding them. In this work we present a series of basic questionings that make us reflect on the present situation of the teaching-learning relationship in astronomy within the framework of formal education. We then briefly explain our project aiming at finding the real learning situation of both students and prospective primary-school teachers in astronomical topics and, from the expected results of it, we point towards the need to develop didactic tools that could contribute to improve formal education in astronomy issues.

Abstract:Cosmology as an exact physical science is of new date, but it has long roots in the past. This essay is concerned with four important themes in the history of cosmological thought which, if taken together, offer a fairly comprehensive account of some of the key developments that have led to the modern understanding of the universe. Apart from the first section, dealing with early views of curved space, it focuses on mainstream cosmology from the expanding universe about 1930 to the emergence of the standard big bang model in the 1960s. This development includes theories we would not today consider "mainstream," such as the steady state model of the universe. The last section outlines what might be called the prehistory of the concept of dark energy, that is, ideas that were discussed before dark energy was actually inferred from supernovae observations in the late 1990s.

Abstract:This review is an up-to-date account of the use of numerical relativity to study dynamical, strong-gravity environments in a cosmological context. First, we provide a gentle introduction into the use of numerical relativity in solving cosmological spacetimes, aimed at both cosmologists and numerical relativists. Second, we survey the present body of work, focusing on general relativistic simulations without approximations, organised according to the cosmological history -- from cosmogenesis, through the early hot Big Bang, to the late-time evolution of universe. In both cases, we discuss the present state-of-the-art, and suggest directions in which future work can be fruitfully pursued.

Abstract:Spanish: La Cosmología esta progresando a pasos agigantados gracias a la cantidad espectacular de datos observacionales que se obtienen tanto de los experimentos en tierra como satélites. Un papel fundamental es desempeñdo por las observaciones del Fondo Cósmico de Microondas (CMB por sus siglas en inglé, Cosmic Microwave Background), la cual nos proporciona la prueba observacional más directa de los inicios del Universo. Las observaciones de la temperatura y las anisotropías en el CMB han jugado un papel fundamental en la definición del modelo cosmológico. Esta contribución tiene como objetivo resumir algunos de los conceptos básicos que hay detrás de la física del CMB. La mayor parte de los ingredientes del modelo cosmológico estándar son poco conocidos en términos de la física fundamental, por efemplo, la materia oscura y la energía oscura. Se discute cómo las observaciones actuales abordan algunas de estas cuestiones. English: The cosmic microwave background (CMB) provides the most direct observational test of the early universe. The observations of the temperature anisotropies in the CMB have played a key role in defining the cosmological model. This contribution aims to summarize some of the basic concepts behind the physics of the CMB. Most of the ingredients of the standard cosmological model are poorly understood in terms of fundamental physics, for instance, dark matter and dark energy. We discuss how current observations addressed some of these issues.

Abstract:Over the last decades, observations with increasing quality have revolutionized our understanding of the general properties of the Universe. Questions posed for millenia by mankind about the origin, evolution and structure of the cosmos have found an answer. This has been possible mainly thanks to observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background, of the large-scale distribution of matter structure in the local Universe, and of type Ia supernovae that have revealed the accelerated expansion of the Universe. All these observations have successfully converged into the so-called "concordance model". In spite of all these observational successes, there are still some important open problems, the most obvious of which are what generated the initial matter inhomogeneities that led to the structure observable in today's Universe, and what is the nature of dark matter, and of the dark energy that drives the accelerated expansion. In this chapter I will expand on the previous aspects. I will present a general description of the Standard Cosmological Model of the Universe, with special emphasis on the most recent observations that have us allowed to consolidate this model. I will also discuss the shortfalls of this model, its most pressing open questions, and will briefly describe the observational programmes that are being planned to tackle these issues.

Abstract:This paper aims at presenting a brief overview of astronomical exchanges between the Eastern and Western parts of the Islamic world from the 8th to 14th century. These cultural interactions were in fact vaster involving Persian, Indian, Greek, and Chinese traditions. I will particularly focus on some interesting relations between the Persian astronomical heritage and the Andalusian (Spanish) achievements in that period. After a brief introduction dealing mainly with a couple of terminological remarks, I will present a glimpse of the historical context in which Muslim science developed. In Section 3, the origins of Muslim astronomy will be briefly examined. Section 4 will be concerned with Khwarizmi, the Persian astronomer/mathematician who wrote the first major astronomical work in the Muslim world. His influence on later Andalusian astronomy will be looked into in Section 5. Andalusian astronomy flourished in the 11th century, as will be studied in Section 6. Among its major achievements were the Toledan Tables and the Alfonsine Tables, which will be presented in Section 7. The Tables had a major position in European astronomy until the advent of Copernicus in the 16th century. Since Ptolemy's models were not satisfactory, Muslim astronomers tried to improve them, as we will see in Section 8. This Section also shows how Andalusian astronomers took part in this effort, which was necessary in the path to the Scientific Revolution. Finally, Section 9 presents the Spanish influence on the eve of the Renaissance.

Abstract:The Heraeus Summer School series "Astronomy from four perspectives", funded by the WE Heraeus Foundation, draws together teachers and teacher students, astronomers, physicists and astronomy students from Germany and Italy. For each summer school, participants gather at one of the four participating nodes: Heidelberg, Padua, Jena, and Florence. The main goal of the series is to bring astronomy into schools, which is achieved by educating and training the teachers and teacher students. In this e-print, we present the exercises, tutorials, and high-school classroom materials developed during the fifth summer school of the series, which took place at Haus der Astronomie in Heidelberg August 26 -- September 2, 2017. "The tutorials" were prepared beforehand for the participants of the Summer schools, and are suitable for use in teacher training. "Classroom materials" were developed mainly during the summer school itself, and are suitable for high-school level teaching. They include question sheets for pupils, and some pointers on where to use the material in the German high school curriculum. Both sets of materials address the summer school's four main topics: Supernova cosmology, the virial theorem, rotation curves of galaxies, and the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB).

Abstract:During the second half of the twentieth century, expensive observatories are being erected at La Silla (Chile), Mauna Kea (Hawai), Las Palmas (Canary Island), and Calar Alto (Spain), to name a view. In 1990, at the beginning of The Decade of Discovery in Astronomy and Astrophysics (Bahcall [2]), the UN/ESA Workshops on Basic Space Science initiated the establishment of small astronomical telescope facilities, among them many particularly supported by Japan, in developing countries in Asia and the Pacific (Sri Lanka, Philippines), Latin America and the Caribbean (Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Paraguay), and Western Asia (Egypt, Jordan, Morocco). The annual UN/ESA Workshops continue to pursue an agenda to network these small observatory facilities through similar research and education programmes and at the same time encourage the incorporation of cultural elements predominant in the respective cultures. Cross-cultural integration and multi-lingual scientific cooperation may well be a dominant theme in the new millennium (Pyenson [20]). This trend is supported by the notion that astronomy has deep roots in virtually every human culture, that it helps to understand humanity's place in the vast scale of the Universe, and that it increases the knowledge of humanity about its origins and evolution=2E Two of these Workshops have been organized in Europe (Germany 1996 and France 2000) to strengthen cooperation between developing and industrialized countries.

Abstract:The flat matter dominated Universe that dominated cosmological model building for much of the past 20 years does not correspond to the Universe in which we live. This has profound implications both for our understanding of dark matter, and also for our understanding of the future of the Universe. I review recent developments here and present best fits for the current, sometimes crazy, values of the major measured fundamental cosmological parameters.
