Abstract:Nanocomposites based on core-shell structured BaTiO3@Dy2O3 nanoparticles filled poly (vinylidene fluoride) polymer have been prepared. Comparison of two reaction mediums (ethanol and isopropanol) and their effects on the dielectric behavior of nanocomposites were investigated. The ferroelectric polarization of nanocomposites was also analyzed. The results indicate that dispersion mediums can influence the adsorption actions between nanoparticles and polymer in solution. With isopropanol as the dispersed medium, homogenous BaTiO3@Dy2O3/PVDF nanocomposites with suitable volume fraction ratio could be prepared with higher dielectric permittivity, lower dielectric loss and conductivity in the frequency range of 100 Hz similar to 1 MHz compared with that using ethanol as dispersion medium. The displacement-electric field loops display a notable increase in electric displacement and energy storage ability of the nanocomposites compared with pure PVDF. Introduction of Dy2O3 by hydrolysis could further enhance dielectric properties. Isopropanol dispersed composites with 10 vol % BaTiO3@Dy2O3 nanoparticles exhibit dielectric permittivity of similar to 20, low conductivity of 6.3x10(-19) S.m(-1) and loss tangents of 0.06 at 1 kHz.

Abstract:The effective permittivity of CoFeSiB microwire/rubber composites is investigated in the microwave range of frequencies. As the frequency is varied between 0.3 and 6 GHz with or without magnetic field excitation, we identify a two-peak structure of the permittivity spectra. This spectral feature may be attributed to a core-shell structure of the microwires. That is, a core amorphous phase which is surrounded by a small amount of crystalline nanoshell. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy provides a direct means to detect the crystalline nanoshell. Electromagnetic simulations show that Drude-Lorentz's model of dispersion can describe the effective permittivity quite well in this range of frequencies. (C) 2013 American Institute of Physics. A Rational Design of Core-Shell-satellite Structured BaTiO3 Fillers for Epoxy-Based Composites with Enhanced Microwave Dielectric Constant and Low Loss

Abstract:With the rapid progress of wireless communication technology, development of composites with high dielectric constant (high-k) and low loss at gigahertz frequency calls for novel materials design strategies. Core-shellsatellite structured BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticles with polydopamine (PDA) layers and silver (Ag) nanoparticles were herein developed, which were incorporated into epoxy (EP) to prepare a set of composites. Physicochemical properties of modified BT nanoparticles and the dispersion and interface of corresponding modified BT/EP composites were comparatively investigated. The dielectric properties of modified BT/epoxy (EP) nanocomposites with various filler fractions were investigated at 8?12 GHz. It is found that, at the highest filler volume fraction (20 vol%), the dielectric constant of BT-PDA-Ag/EP at 10 GHz reached 8.4, and the loss tangent was also suppressed at 0.024. The polarization and loss mechanisms of the composites were then proposed based on the morphologies and the microstructures of the composites. BT-PDA-Ag promotes interfacial polarization, better dispersion and reduced mismatch, resulting in enhanced dielectric constant and low loss. More importantly, by ensuring a disconnection of the silver particles, PDA hinders the formation of conductive network thus suppressing the dielectric loss. This research provides a novel strategy to prepare high-k and suppressed loss nanocomposites potentially for 5G applications.
Microwave absorption performance of magnetic-dielectric Fe3O4@C@PPy composites with a core-double-shell structure prepared by a low-temperature self-propagation method

Abstract:Microwave absorbers have been developed to counter electromagnetic pollution, and enhancing their performance remains an ongoing concern. In this paper, carbon-coated Fe3O4 and polypyrrole (PPy) were combined to construct composites with a core-double-shell structure, and the influences of multiple synergistic effects from ternary components, carbon defects, and microstructure on the electromagnetic properties of Fe3O4@C@PPy composites were investigated. The Fe3O4@C@PPy composites were successfully prepared by the low-temperature self-propagation method and in-situ oxidation polymerization process, achieving a −53.67 dB reflection loss at 12.24 GHz when the sample thickness was 2.13 mm, and the effective absorbing (RL < 10 dB) band covered 4.16 GHz (13.84–18 GHz) with a corresponding thickness of only 1.63 mm. The core-double-shell structure perfectly integrated various advantages of each component as well as provided multiple reflections and scatterings. Meanwhile, the polarization loss was notably enhanced by heterogeneous interfaces, and the dielectric-magnetic loss mechanism cooperatively accelerated the dissipation of electromagnetic wave energy.

Abstract:Polymer nanocomposite films, poly(1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyl methacrylate)@BaTiO3 (PPFOMA@BaTiO3), with enhanced dielectric permittivity was fabricated via a two-step processes, consisting of BaTiO3 nanoparticle surface modification and surface initiated atom transfer radical grafting polymerization (SI-ATRP). At first, BaTiO3 nanoparticles were treated by hydroxylation, silylation and amidation to offer their SI-ATRP capability. Then PPFOMA chains were grafted from the modified BaTiO3 nanoparticles by SI-ATRP at 70 degrees C to form core-shell composites. The effects of polymer structure and polymer/BaTiO3 ratios on dielectric properties were measured over a broad frequency from 40 Hz to 30 MHz at room temperature. The results showed that the dielectric constant (k) increased and dielectric loss reduced significantly with the addition of BaTiO3. The k of the composite was up to 7.4 at 100 kHz at room temperature when the BaTiO3 loading was up to 70.70 wt% which is almost three time of pure PPFOMA (k = 2.6). While the dielectric loss (tan delta) of PPFOMA@BaTiO3 composite was about 0.01, which was much lower than that of the pure PPFOMA (tan delta = 0.04). (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Core-shell FeCo@carbon nanoparticles encapsulated in polydopamine-derived carbon nanocages for efficient microwave absorption

Abstract:Rational manipulation on chemical composition and microstructure is evolving as a powerful approach to reinforce the electromagnetic (EM) functions of magnetic carbon-based composites. With FeCo Prussian blue analogs (FeCo PBAs) as the nucleation sites, we conduct the polymerization of dopamine (DA) on their surface and then convert the precursor into desirable FeCo alloy/carbon composites. PDA coating is greatly helpful to suppress the microstructure collapse of FeCo PBAs during high-temperature pyrolysis, resulting in a unique hierarchical configuration of core-shell FeCo@C nanoparticles encapsulated in PDA-derived carbon nanocages. The formation of carbon nanocages not only adjusts the relative carbon content, but also affects EM properties of these composites. In particular, the dielectric loss can be significantly enhanced, which further accounts for an improvement in overall attenuation ability toward incident EM waves. When the weight ratio of DA to FeCo PBAs reaches 0.75, the obtained composite will exhibit excellent microwave absorption performance thanks to its decent attenuation ability and matched characteristic impedance. The strongest reflection loss intensity is located at −67.8 dB at 15.8 GHz, and the effective bandwidth covers 11.0–16.3 GHz with the thickness of 2.00 mm. The advantages in microstructure are also established by parallel comparison with a disordered counterpart.

Abstract:Dielectric nanocomposites have attracted much attention due to their wide applications in electronics and electrical industry. Recently, incorporating core-shell nanoparticles into polymer matrix to improve the dielectric properties of nanocomposites has been widely reported. Tailoring the interfacial region between the polymer and the nanoparticles plays a crucial role in achieving the desired dielectric and energy storage properties of nanocomposites. However, the effect of shell structure in the interface region on the dielectric and energy storage properties is rarely studied. Based on this, core-shell BaTiO3 nanoparticles with two different shell polymers, a "hard-soft" copolymer of methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate (P[MMA-BA]) and a "hard" homopolymer of methyl methacrylate (PMMA), were prepared in this paper. The effect of core-shell BaTiO3 nanoparticles with different shell structures on the dielectric and energy storage properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) was investigated in depth. Due to the formation of a tight interfacial region between P(MMA-BA)@BT and PVDF matrix, P(MMA-BA)@BT/PVDF nanocomposites not only have low dielectric loss but also higher energy efficiency than PMMA@BT/PVDF nanocomposites. This study suggests a potential strategy that fabricating a "hard-soft" copolymer shell on BaTiO3 surface can obtain desirable energy storage efficiency than the single "hard" shell structure in dielectric nanocomposites.

Abstract:Polymer based dielectric composites were fabricated through incorporation of core-shell structured BaTiO3 (BT) nanoparticles into PVDF matrix by means of solution blending. Core-shell structured BT nanoparticles with different shell composition and shell thickness were prepared by grafting methacrylate monomer (MMA or TFEMA) onto the surface of BT nanoparticles via surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The content of the grafted polymer and the micro-morphology of the core-shell structured BT nanoparticles were investigated by thermo gravimetric analyses (TGA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The dielectric properties were measured by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The results showed that high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss are successfully realized in the polymer based composites. Moreover, the type of the grafted polymer and its content had different effect on the dielectric constant. In detail, the attenuation of dielectric constant was 16.6% for BT@PMMAI/PVDF and 10.7% for BT@PMMA2/PVDF composite in the range of 10 Hz to 100 kHz, in which the grafted content of PMMA was 5.5% and 8.0%, respectively. However, the attenuation of dielectric constant was 5.5% for BT@PTFEMA1/13VDF and 4.0% for BT@PTFEMA2/PVDF composite, in which the grafted content of PTFEMA was 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively. These attractive features of BT@PTFEMA/PVDF composites suggested that dielectric ceramic fillers modified with fluorinated polymer can be used to prepare high performance composites, especially those with low dielectric loss and high dielectric constant. Abstract:Microwave absorbing BaFe12O19/Ni0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4@PANI core‐shell nanocomposites. In this paper, BaFe12O19/Ni0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4@PANI core‐shell nanocomposites were synthesized with different ferrite/PANI ratios. The Ferrite nanoparticles were prepared by the auto‐combustion sol–gel method. Chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline in acidic solution along with adding ferrite nanoparticles to the composition was used for the synthesis of nanocomposites. The product then was studied by X‐ray diffractometer)XRD(, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE‐SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. The magnetic properties of samples were investigated with vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Also, nanocomposite samples were examined in terms of the ability to absorb microwaves. Using Vector Network Analyzer (VNA). the reflection loss (RL) of nanocomposites was measured at frequencies between 2 and 18 GHz. The minimum reflection loss (RLmin) was obtained at −36.98 dB at the frequency of 13.8 GHz with an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.87 GHz for the sample with the equal ratio of ferrite/PANI. Synthesized nanocomposite as an effective compound has very high reflection loss in a wide frequency range. Highlights Thermal stability is improved by adding ferrite nanoparticles to polyaniline. The polymer shell reduces the magnetic properties of ferrite nanoparticles. There is a strong exchange coupling between hard and soft ferrite. Ferrite/polymer ratio of 1:1 has the lowest amount of reflection loss. In the X and Ku band, magnetic loss is mainly caused by eddy currents.

Abstract:The development of advanced microwave absorbing materials with high absorption intensity and broad bandwidth is crucial for applications in electromagnetic interference shielding and stealth technology. In this study, we propose a novel hybrid material composed of porous magnetic nanospindle@poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/MXene (Fe@P/MX), designed to achieve superior microwave absorption performance through impedance matching and electromagnetic loss mechanisms. The conductive PEDOT and MXene, combined with magnetic nanospindles, enable impedance matching and promote dielectric loss, which ultimately enhances microwave absorption. Additionally, the hybrid material contains multiple interfaces that induce interface polarization and strong absorption of electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic parameters of composites can be easily modulated by adjusting the content of PEDOT, thereby optimizing microwave absorption performance. The results demonstrate improved performance compared to existing materials, with the minimum reflection loss of − 60.6 dB at 17.0 GHz under the thickness of 1.6 mm. Besides, the effective absorption bandwidth extends to 5.4 GHz under the thickness of 1.9 mm. This core–shell hybrid material has significant potential for practical applications requiring efficient microwave absorption.

Abstract:Nowadays, core-shell structures have attracted considerable attention as microwave absorbers (MAs) due to the synergistic effect between dielectric and magnetic loss. Herein, core-shell Fe 3 Al@polypyrrole (Fe 3 Al@PPy) composites were successfully fabricated by the thermit reaction and chemical oxidation polymerization method with the assistance of ammonium persulfate and p-toluene sulfonic acid. Due to the regulation of the impedance matching by the electromagnetic coupling and core-shell structure, the Fe 3 Al@PPy composites showed enhanced electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance compared with the pure Fe 3 Al. Furthermore, the thickness of the PPy shell increased from 0.23 μm to 1.50 μm as the addition of pyrrole (Py) increased from 0.25 mL to 1.0 mL. Meanwhile, the core-shell Fe 3 Al@PPy composites exhibited the optimal wave absorption performance when the PPy shell thickness was 0.80 μm, and the reflection loss (RL) could reach − 40.53 dB with the thickness of 2.0 mm at 13.3 GHz. This work provides a new idea for the design of large-scale electromagnetic (EM) coupled MAs with core-shell structures.

Abstract:High encapsulation efficiency of core@shell@shell structured carbon-based magnetic ternary nanohybrids have been synthesized in high yield by chemical vapor deposition of acetylene directly over octahedral-shaped Fe2O3 nanoparticles. By controlling the pyrolysis temperature, Fe3O4@Fe3C@carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and Fe@Fe3C@CNTs ternary nanohybrids could be selectively produced. The optimal RL values for the as-prepared ternary nanohybrids could reach up to ca. -46.7, -52.7 and -29.5 dB, respectively. The excellent microwave absorption properties of the obtaiend ternary nanohybrids were proved to ascribe to the quarter-wavelength matching model. Moreover, the as-prepared Fe@Fe3C@CNTs ternary nanohybrids displayed remarkably enhanced EM wave absorption capabilities compared to Fe3O4@Fe3C@CNTs due to their excellent dielectric loss abilities, good complementarities between the dielectric loss and the magnetic loss, and high attenuation constant. Generally, this strategy can be extended to explore other categories of core@shell or core@shell@shell structured carbon-based nanohybrids, which is very beneficial to accelerate the advancements of high performance MAMs. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The interfacial region plays a critical role in determining the electrical properties and energy storage density of dielectric polymer nanocomposites. However, we still know a little about the effects of electrical properties of the interfacial regions on the electrical properties and energy storage of dielectric polymer nanocomposites. In this work, three types of core-shell structured polymer@BaTiO3 nanoparticles with polymer shells having different electrical properties were used as fillers to prepare ferroelectric polymer nanocomposites. All the polymer@BaTiO3 nanoparticles were prepared by surface-initiated reversible-addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, and the polymer shells were controlled to have the same thickness. The morphology, crystal structure, frequency-dependent dielectric properties, breakdown strength, leakage currents, energy storage capability, and energy storage efficiency of the polymer nanocomposites were investigated. On the other hand, the pure polymers having the same molecular structure as the shells of polymer@BaTiO3 nanoparticles were also prepared by RAFT polymerization, and their electrical properties were provided. Our results show that, to achieve nanocomposites with high discharged energy density, the core-shell nanoparticle filler should simultaneously have high dielectric constant and low electrical conductivity. On the other hand, the breakdown strength of the polymer@BaTiO3-based nanocomposites is highly affected by the electrical properties of the polymer shells. It is believed that the electrical conductivity of the polymer shells should be as low as possible to achieve nanocomposites with high breakdown strength.

Abstract:Giant permittivity at 1 MHz, which slightly changes with temperatures, is observed in a polymer composite. The dielectric spectroscopy demonstrates that the samples are electrically heterogeneous. The microstructure observation and the ingredient analysis evidence they self assemble the conducting cores surrounded by the insulating shells. The giant-dielectric phenomenon is therefore attributed to the percolation effect. The electrically heterogeneous microstructure with effective permittivity values about 10 000 can be fabricated by a simple solution casting process in air. The composite is an attractive option to the currently used printing dielectric and the future flexible electronics.

Abstract:The core-shell MnFe2O4–TiO2 nano-composites were prepared by hydrolysis of titanium butoxide precursor in the presence of MnFe2O4 nanoparticles that were synthesized via the pyrolysis of polyacrylate salt precursor prepared by in situ polymerization of the metal salts and acrylate acid. The magnetic properties of the MnFe2O4 and MnFe2O4–TiO2 composites measured at the maximum magnetic field of 10kOe and room temperature exhibited a super-paramagnetic behavior. The complex permittivity and permeability of MnFe2O4 and MnFe2O4–TiO2 composites measured in the microwave frequency range of 2–10GHz showed that the microwave absorption properties of the MnFe2O4–TiO2 composites were higher than that of MnFe2O4.

Abstract:The three-dimensional (3D) conductive network structures formed by barium titanate/carbon nanotubes incorporated polyaniline were favorable for strengthening electromagnetic absorption capability. Herein, an easy and flexible method consisting of sol-gel technique, in situ polymerization, and subsequent mechanical method have been developed to prepare the barium titanate/carbon nanotubes incorporated polyaniline (CNTs/BaTiO 3 /PANI or CBP) ternary composites. The dielectric properties and microwave absorption properties of CNTs/BaTiO 3 /PANI composites were investigated in the frequency range of 2–18 GHz by vector network analyzer. Interestingly, it is found that the CNTs/BaTiO 3 /PANI composites with 3D conductive network structures presented outstanding electromagnetic absorption properties, which may be attributed to the high impedance matching behavior and improved dielectric loss ability and novel synergistic effect. Additionally, it also can be supposed that the “geometrical effect” of composite was more beneficial to absorbing the incident electromagnetic wave. The CNTs/BaTiO 3 /PANI composite (the mass ratio of CNTs/BaTiO 3 to PANI is 2 : 3) exhibits the best microwave absorption properties, of which the minimum reflection loss value can reach −30.9 dB at 8 GHz and the absorption bandwidth with a reflection loss blew −10 dB ranges from 7.5 to 10.2 GHz.

Abstract:In this work, we prepared the polyimide (PI) nanocomposite films containing barium titanate @polydopamine () nanoparticles within a core-shell structure by solution casting method. The dielectric constant of these nanocomposite films is significantly improved compared to pure PI film, and increases with the increase of BT nanoparticles. And, the breakdown strength of these nanocomposite films is better than that of untreated BT/PI films at the fixed BT content. The PI composite film containing 1 vol% of nanoparticles exhibits the highest energy storage density of 1.94 J/cm3 under an electric field of 315 kV/mm, which is 42% over the pristine PI (1.37 J/cm3 at 295 kV/mm) and about 162% greater than biaxially-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) (≈1.2 J/cm3 at 640 kV/mm). The presence of PDA shell effectively improves the dispersion uniformity and interfacial compatibility of BT nanoparticles in the PI matrix, giving rise to lower local electric field distortion in the composites. Besides, the /PI nanocomposite films have excellent dielectric thermal stability in the temperature range from 25 to 200 °C and thermal stability up to 500 °C. The /PI composites fabricated in this work have a great potential to be used in the high-temperature film capacitors.

Abstract:In recent years, electromagnetic pollution has become more and more serious, and there is an urgent need for microwave absorbing materials with superior performance. Prussian blue analogue (PBA) is a metal organic framework material with the advantages of diverse morphology and tunable composition. Therefore, PBA has attracted a lot of attention in the field of microwave absorption. In this work, PBA was coated on the surface of carbon composites by hydrothermal method , and then PPy was compounded on its surface after carbonization treatment to construct hierarchical core–shell / fibers. The fibers have Co-doped C composites as the core and CoFe/C decorated with PPy as the shell. This unique hierarchical structure and various microwave absorption mechanisms are described in detail. The microwave absorption performance is optimized by adjusting the filling of the sample. The best microwave absorption performances are achieved at 25 wt% filling of / At a thickness of just 1.69 mm, / fiebrs have a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −64.32 dB. When the thickness is 1.88 mm, / achieves a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB max ) of 5.38 GHz. The results indicate that the / composite fibers have a great potential in the field of microwave absorption.

Complex Permittivity And Permeability Of Metallic Magnetic Granular Composites At Microwave Frequencies

Abstract:The complex permittivity and permeability of composites consisting of metallic magnetic particles (carbonyl-iron-particles (CIPs)) embedded in a dielectric matrix (epoxy resin) have been studied at microwave frequencies. Composites with different volume fraction (5-60%) of magnetic particles have been fabricated and their complex permittivity and permeability have been measured. The concentration dependence of permittivity and permeability has been analysed using various effective medium theories. We have found that only the general Bruggeman formula describes composites very well over a wide range of concentrations used in this study. The extracted permittivity and permeability of CIPs are consistent with those reported.

Abstract:The development of pulse power systems and electric power transmission systems urgently require the innovation of dielectric materials possessing high-temperature durability, high energy storage density, and efficient charge–discharge performance. This study introduces a core-double-shell-structured iron(II,III) oxide@barium titanate@silicon dioxide/polyetherimide (Fe3O4@BaTiO3@SiO2/PEI) nanocomposite, where the highly conductive Fe3O4 core provides the foundation for the formation of microcapacitor structures within the material. The inclusion of the ferroelectric ceramic BaTiO3 shell enhances the composite's polarization and interfacial polarization strength while impeding free charge transfer. The outer insulating SiO2 shell contributes excellent interface compatibility and charge isolation effects. With a filler content of 9 wt%, the Fe3O4@BaTiO3@SiO2/PEI nanocomposite achieves a dielectric constant of 10.6, a dielectric loss of 0.017, a high energy density of 5.82 J cm−3, and a charge–discharge efficiency (η) of 72%. The innovative aspect of this research is the design of nanoparticles with a core-double-shell structure and their PEI-based nanocomposites, effectively enhancing the dielectric and energy storage performance. This study provides new insights and experimental evidence for the design and development of high-performance dielectric materials, offering significant implications for the fields of electronic devices and energy storage.
