Abstract:To improve the mechanical and thermal properties of polypropylene (PP) composites, ultrafine bamboo-char (UFBC) was introduced into the composites. Effects of different loading contents vis 0-50% by weight and UFBC sizes vis 2000 mesh were investigated, respectively. Uniform dispersion of UFBC in the PP matrix and good interaction via physical interfacial interlocks was observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM). The addition of UFBC had significant impact on mechanical properties of the composites. Tensile strength increased with the addition of UFBC, and reached maximum value of 23.39 MPa when 30% of UFBC was added. Bending strength of the composites with 40% UFBC loading reached maximum value of 41.83 MPa, which increased by 39.2% compared to that of PP. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis illustrated that crystallization temperature and melting temperature increased by 11.1°C and 5°C with the addition of UFBC. When the content of UFBC reached 30%, degree of crystallinity of composites reached a higher value of 62.1%.

In Situ Nanofibrillar Polypropylene-Based Composite Microcellular Foams with Enhanced Mechanical and Flame-Retardant Performances

Abstract:With the increasing demand for plastic components, the development of lightweight, high strength and functionalized polypropylene (PP) from a cost-effective and environmentally friendly process is critical for resource conservation. In situ fibrillation (INF) and supercritical CO2 (scCO2) foaming technology were combined in this work to fabricate PP foams. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and poly(diaryloxyphosphazene)(PDPP) particles were applied to fabricate in situ fibrillated PP/PET/PDPP composite foams with enhanced mechanical properties and favorable flame-retardant performance. The existence of PET nanofibrils with a diameter of 270 nm were uniformly dispersed in PP matrix and served multiple roles by tuning melt viscoelasticity for improving microcellular foaming behavior, enhancing crystallization of PP matrix and contributing to improving the uniformity of PDPP's dispersion in INF composite. Compared to pure PP foam, PP/PET(F)/PDPP foam exhibited refined cellular structures, thus the cell size of PP/PET(F)/PDPP foam was decreased from 69 to 23 μm, and the cell density increased from 5.4 × 106 to 1.8 × 108 cells/cm3. Furthermore, PP/PET(F)/PDPP foam showed remarkable mechanical properties, including a 975% increase in compressive stress, which was attributed to the physical entangled PET nanofibrils and refined cellular structure. Moreover, the presence of PET nanofibrils also improved the intrinsic flame-retardant nature of PDPP. The synergistical effect of the PET nanofibrillar network and low loading of PDPP additives inhibited the combustion process. These gathered advantages of PP/PET(F)/PDPP foam make it promising for lightweight, strong, and fire-retardant polymeric foams.

Abstract:The clam shell (CS) waste was first modified by furfural and hydrochloric acid to prepare fillers FCS and ACS, which were then used as fillers in polypropylene (PP), as well as the commercial calcium carbonate (CC). These fillers were characterized and analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), particle size analyzer, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle measurement. The mechanical and thermal properties of PP composites were investigated as well. XRD analysis indicated that the major crystalline phase of CC was calcite; of shell waste derived fillers, calcite and aragonite. The CC was fully hydrophobic, while the shell derived fillers were amphiphilic. Mechanical property studies showed that the incorporation of FCS played the role mainly of toughening the PP; of CC, CS and ACS, that of reinforcing. The optimum filler contents of CS, ACS and FCS could reach 5, 7 and 15 wt.%, respectively, to obtain a good balance between fracture toughness and stiffness of the PP composites. Polarized optical microscopy (POM) observation indicated that the inclusion of these fillers could promote the heterogeneous nucleation of PP.
Dielectric Properties and Conductivity of Carbon Nanofiber/semi-Crystalline Polymer Composites

Abstract:The properties of semi-crystalline polymer nanocomposites are affected by the nanofillers directly and indirectly, as two phases, i.e., crystalline and amorphous, exist in the polymer. The effects of nanofillers on the two phases could be competitive. The dielectric properties and conductivity of carbon nanofibers (CNF)/semi-crystalline polymer nanocomposites are studied in this paper. CNF/polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites are prepared in experiment by melt blending. The resulting morphology and crystalline structure are characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry, wide angle X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The PP nanocomposite containing 5wt.% CNF exhibits a surprisingly high dielectric constant under wide sweep frequencies attended by low dielectric loss. Its dielectric constant is >600 under lower frequency, and remains >200 at a frequency of 4000Hz. The electrical and thermal conductivities of the nanocomposites are studied, and enhancements are seen with increased CNF content. Theoretical analyses on the physical properties are carried out by applying the existing models. Research results indicate that a common commercial plastic with good comprehensive performance, which exhibited the potential for applications in advanced electronics, was obtained by a simple industry benign technique.

Abstract:Various methods for contextual classification of multispectral scanner data have been developed during the last 15 years, aiming at increased accuracy in classified images. The methods have for a large part been of four main types: 1) neighborhood-based classification based on stochastic models for the classes over the scene and for the vectors given the classes; 2) simultaneous classification of all pixels, using, e.g., Markov random-field models; 3) relaxation methods that iteratively modify posterior probabilities using information from an increasing neighborhood; and 4) methods using ordinary noncontextual rules based on transformed data. In the present paper a selection of these methods is presented and compared using computer-gented data on different scenes. Spatial autocorrelation is present in the data. Error rates are compared, and an attempt is made to characterize what kind of errors each particular method makes.

Abstract:A continuous production of microcellular polypropylene (PP)/30% carbon fiber composite was achieved in a newly developed nozzle-based microcellular injection molding system. In this work, a conventional injection molding machine was retrofitted with a nitrogen (N2) gas injection system. A specially designed “injection cum mixing nozzle” was added between the machine barrel and a shut-off nozzle to form a polymer/gas mixture as against barrel injection where the screw and barrel are usually modified for gas insertion. The foamed plastic was formed due to the thermodynamic instability caused by sudden pressure drop in the mold. The effectiveness of foam molding system developed in this study was verified by change of process parameters resulting into variety of cell morphology and cell size. Further, PP/30% carbon fiber composite was injection molded into ASTM tensile test sample with both conventional and foam molding system. These samples were then subjected to scanning electron microscope (SEM) as well as tensile testing to study the effect of injection speed on the cell morphology and tensile properties of foam molded composites. It was observed that cell size decreased and cell density increased with increase in injection speed. The mechanical properties of the foamed composites depend largely on the processing conditions.

Abstract:This study examines the impact of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites, with an emphasis on the thermal characteristics of the materials. Employing a twin-screw extruder and injection molding techniques, the author aimed to elucidate the effects of varying MWCNT concentrations and dispersion patterns, deliberately excluding a compatibilizer from the study. The findings revealed a marginal increase in the crystallization peak temperatures of PP under non-isothermal conditions upon the addition of MWCNTs. Crucially, the research identified a significant "percolation threshold" of 0.5 mass% of MWCNTs, beyond which substantial improvements in physical properties were observed in the absence of a compatibilizer. Below this threshold, an augmented interfacial area between PP and MWCNTs notably enhanced PP's thermal stability. Noteworthy is the discernible reinforcing impact of MWCNTs, particularly evident at elevated temperatures, as indicated by the elucidated " n " index. Furthermore, the investigation showcased reduced shrinkage in composite fibers compared to control fibers, with heat-treated fibers exhibiting a narrow melting peak at 170 °C. This work is essential to the development of materials with improved physical characteristics because it provides valuable insights into the effects of MWCNTs on PP nanocomposites.

Abstract:Abstract In order to improve the toughness of the wood-polymer composites, the microcellular structure was introduced to the polypropylene (PP) based wood-polymer composites by the technology of continuous extrusion in this article. In order to improve the mechanical and thermal properties of the samples further, the content of both wood flour (WF) and the chemical blowing agent were investigated. Besides, the compound foaming agents were also applied in the process of extrusion. According to the experimental results, the addition of WF contributed to increase both the softening temperatures and the apparent densities of the samples, and the best mechanical properties and microcellular structure were obtained when the mass ratio of WF to PP increased to 3/7. In addition, compared with the granular blowing agent, the powdered foaming agent showed a great advantage in dispersion, which helped to improve the bubble morphology and the mechanical strengths of the samples. Furthermore, the minimum bubble size and the maximum bubble density were both achieved at the powder content of 1 phr.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP)-composite foams were prepared by a combination process of microcellular injection molding (MIM) and in-mold decoration (IMD). The effect of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) on the crystallization properties, rheological properties, microstructure, and mechanical properties of PP-composite foams was studied. The effect of the additives on the strength and toughness of PP-composite foam as determined by the multiscale simulation method is discussed. The results showed that an appropriate amount of EPDM was beneficial to the cell growth and toughening of the PP blends. When the content of EPDM was 15 wt%, the PP-composite foams obtained the minimum cellular size, the maximum cellular density, and the best impact toughness. At the same time, the mesoscopic simulation shows that the stress concentration is the smallest, which indicates that 15 wt% EPDM has the best toughening effect in these composite materials.

Abstract:A novel route based on the solvent-free core/sheath melt-spinning of polypropylene/(phenol formaldehyde–polyethylene) [PP/(PF–PE)] to prepare the carbon nanofiber (CNF) has been demonstrated in this study. The approach consists of three main steps: co-extrusion of PP (core) and a polymer blend of PF and PE (sheath), followed by melt-spinning, to form the core/sheath fiber, stabilization of core/sheath fiber to form the carbon fiber precursor, and carbonization of carbon fiber precursor to form the final CNF. Both scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images reveal long and winding CNF with diameter 100–600 nm and length greater than 80 μm. With a yield of ~45% based on its raw material PF, the CNF exhibits regularly oriented bundles which curl up to become rolls of wavy long fibers with clean and smooth surface. Results from X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy, and selected area electron diffraction pattern further reveal that the CNF exhibits a mixed-phase carbon material with graphitic particles embedded homogeneously in an amorphous carbon matrix.

Abstract:The creation and application of PET nanofibrils for PP composite reinforcement were studied. PET nanofibrils were fibrillated within a PP matrix using a spunbond process and then injection molded to test for the end-use properties. The nanofibril reinforcement helped to provide higher tensile and flexural performance in solid (unfoamed) injection molded parts. With foam injection molding, the nanofibrils also helped to improve and refine the microcellular morphology, which led to improved performance. Easily and effectively increasing the strength of a polymeric composite is a goal for many research endeavors. By creating nanoscale fibrils within the matrix itself, effective bonding and dispersion have already been achieved, overcoming the common pitfalls of fiber reinforcement. As blends of PP and PET are drawn in a spunbond system, the PET domains are stretched into nanoscale fibrils. By adapting the spunbonded blends for use in injection molding, both solid and foamed nanocomposites are created. The injection molded nanocomposites achieved increased in both tensile and flexural strength. The solid and foamed tensile strength increased by 50 and 100%, respectively. In addition, both the solid and foamed flexural strength increased by 100%. These increases in strength are attributed to effective PET nanofibril reinforcement.

Abstract:In this study, onium‐ion‐added nano‐clay/microcellular polypropylene composites were created using a conventional injection molding machine. A chemical foaming agent was utilized to facilitate mixing. The primary focus was to analyze how altering the nano‐clay (NC) content affects the mechanical characteristics and the properties of the endothermic chemical foaming agent (CFA) added PP/nano‐clay composites. The composites were created using a chemical foaming agent at a weight ratio of 1%wt and nano‐clay at weight ratios of 0, 2.5%wt. and 5%wt. The findings indicated that an increase in the nano‐clay ratio led to higher cell count and cell density, along with a reduction in cell diameter. Additionally, the outcomes demonstrated that the foaming of PP‐nano‐clay composites resulted in decreased modulus of elasticity and tensile strength while enhancing impact strength. Abstract:The effect of carbon nanofiber (CNF) functionalization on the thermo-mechanical properties of polyamide-12/CNF nanocomposites was investigated. Three main different surface treatments were performed to obtain CNF-OH (OH rich), CNF-Silane (C6H5Si–O–), and CNF-peroxide. CNF modified with poly-(tert-butyl acrylate) chains grown from the surface via ATRP (atom transfer radical polymerization) were also prepared and tested. The modified CNFs and neat CNFs were used as fillers in polyamide-12 nanocomposites and the properties of the ensuing materials were characterized and compared. Universal tensile tests demonstrated a substantial increase (up to 20 %) of the yield strength, without reduction of the final elongation, for all functionalized samples tested within 1 wt% filler content. Further evidences of mechanical properties improvement were given by dynamic mechanical thermal analyses. CNFs functionalized with poly-(tert-butyl acrylate) and silane exhibited the best performance with stiffening and strengthening at low (≤1 wt%) filler loadings, via a partial decrease of the intensity of β-transitions attributed to favorable interactions between the functional groups on the surface of functionalized CNFs and polyamide-12. CNFs treated with peroxide proved to be the most simple preparation technique and the ensuing nanocomposites exhibited the highest storage modulus at high (5 wt%) filler content. Theoretical simulations using the micro-mechanics model were used to predict the Young modulus of the composites and compare them with experimental data. The results obtained suggest a synergistic effect between the matrix and the filler enhanced by surface functionalization.

Abstract:There is a great demand for sustainable alternatives to petroleum-based foams. Here, we report ultralight, thermally insulating foams, with good mechanical performance made with cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The CNFs were first suspended in water and crosslinked with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) followed by freeze drying, to fabricate foam panels. The CNF content in suspension, CNF/PVA ratio, and CNF type were investigated as the main factors controlling the microstructure and properties. The CNF content and CNF/PVA ratio exhibited substantial impacts on the foams' cellular morphology and mechanical behavior. More uniform cellular structures with smaller pore sizes were obtained at higher CNF contents and higher PVA to CNF ratios. By increasing CNF content from 2 to 6 wt.%, the compressive modulus, strength, and flexural modulus all increased up to 26, 9, and 7 folds, respectively, with only about 3% loss in the porosity. The thermal conductivity was consistent in the range of 0.03–0.05 W/mK and changed only slightly with the CNF content and CNF/PVA ratio. Moreover, the results revealed that the additional refining of CNF did not positively affect the properties. This implies less refined and more cost-effective CNF feedstock can be utilized for this foaming method, as an essential step towards scale up.

Abstract:Lightweight polypropylene (PP) composite materials are preferred to other polymer-matrix composites, in the conductive and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding industries, due to their pronounced advantages. However, facile and high-efficiency fabrication of low-density multifunctional PP composite foams, for EMI shielding, remains a challenge. In this study, we fabricated lightweight polypropylene (PP)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/carbon black (CB) nanocomposite foams by combining high-speed mechanical mixing, structural manipulation and solid-state supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) foaming. Due to the "brick and mud" dense structure formed by high-speed mechanical mixing and structure manipulation, we obtained a low density (0.082–0.101 g/cm3) after solid-state ScCO2 foaming in the nanocomposite foams containing hybrid nanofiller (1:1). Specifically, segregated synergistic conductive networks were observed in the nanocomposite foams. With such networks, the nanocomposite foams containing hybrid nanofiller (1:1) exhibited the best electrical properties (∼6.67 × 10−3 S/cm at 5 wt% hybrid filler), and the lowest percolation threshold (0.016 vol%) compared with other systems. Moreover, the nanocomposite foams containing 5 wt% hybrid nanofiller (1:1) showed enhanced specific EMI shielding effectiveness (∼72.23 dB cm3/g at X band), and absorption-dominated shielding characteristic. Furthermore, we found a good thermal insulation performance (61.2 mW m−1 K−1) and compressive properties (∼37.1 MPa g−1 cm3 at 50% strain). Overall, our work provides a simple and versatile strategy for fabricating high-performance PP-based nanocomposite foams. These foams present lightweight, ultra-low percolation threshold, high strength, thermal insulation and good EMI shielding properties.

Abstract:In the current study, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were grown on a carbon fiber (CF) surface by using the chemical vapor deposition method (CVD) and the influences of some parameters of the CVD method on improving the mechanical properties of a polypropylene (PP) composite were investigated. To obtain an optimum surface area, thickness, and yield of the CNFs, the parameters of the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, such as catalyst concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time, and hydrocarbon flow rate, were optimized. It was observed that the optimal surface area, thickness, and yield of the CNFs caused more adhesion of the fibers with the PP matrix, which enhanced the composite properties. Besides this, the effectiveness of reinforcement of fillers was fitted with a mathematical model obtaining good agreement between the experimental result and the theoretical prediction. By applying scanning electronic microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy, the surface morphology and structural information of the resultant CF-CNF were analyzed. Additionally, SEM images and a mechanical test of the composite with a proper layer of CNFs on the CF revealed not only a compactness effect but also the thickness and surface area roles of the CNF layers in improving the mechanical properties of the composites.

Abstract:This study explores the impact of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersion on the microcellular foaming characteristics of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) matrices. Two distinct dispersion methods, primary (PD) and secondary (SD), were employed to fabricate PBS/CNT nanocomposites, resulting in different filler dispersion states. The PD technique involves the conventional method of direct melt blending PBS with CNTs, while the SD technique adopts a more advanced strategy by integrating the Pickering emulsion template with melt blending, achieving finer CNTs distribution within the PBS matrix. The results reveal that the SD technique leads to significantly more uniform distribution of CNTs, which in turn enhances the melt strength and crystallization of the polymer matrix, thereby broadening the window for microcellular foaming. Notably, foams developed through the SD method exhibited a decrease in cell size to 10.4 μm and an increase in cell density to 1.8×10 10 cells·cm -3 . Moreover, this uniform distribution of CNTs contributed to superior cell stability and an increase in compressive strength to 14.0 MPa. These findings highlight the pivotal role of nanofiller dispersion in determining foam properties and establish foundational knowledge for designing PBS foams with consistent and uniform cell structures. Such advancements are crucial for enhancing the applicability and performance of PBS-based materials across a spectrum of industries.

Abstract:As a substitute for conventional polymers for the preparation of biodegradable microcellular polymeric foams, polybutylene succinate (PBS) presents one of the most promising alternatives. However, the low melt strength of PBS makes it difficult to produce high-performance microcellular foams. This study aimed to improve the melt strength of PBS and explore the mechanical, thermal, crystalline, rheological, and supercritical CO2 foaming properties of PBS nanocomposites by using carbon nanofibers (CNFs). This study found that nanocomposites containing 7 wt% CNF exhibited the highest tensile strength, Young's modulus, and bending strength. Moreover, the CNF nanofillers were well dispersed in the PBS matrix without significant agglomeration, even at high filler concentrations. Furthermore, the nanocomposites demonstrated improved melting temperature and crystallinity compared with pure PBS. The rheological analysis showed that the addition of CNFs significantly increased PBS viscosity at low frequencies due to the interaction between the PBS molecular chains and CNFs and the entanglement of CNFs, resulting in a more complete physical network formation when the CNF content reached above 3 wt%. During the supercritical CO2 foaming process, the addition of CNFs resulted in increased cell density, smaller cells, and thicker cell walls, with good laps formed between the fibers on the cell walls of nanocomposite foams. Moreover, the electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties of the foamed material were studied, and a nanocomposite foam containing 7 wt% CNF showed good electrical conductivity (4.5 × 10−3 S/m) and specific EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) (34.7 dB/g·cm−1). Additionally, the nanocomposite foam with 7 wt% CNF also exhibited good compression properties (21.7 MPa). Overall, this work has successfully developed a high-performance, multifunctional PBS-based nanocomposite foam, making it suitable for applications in various fields.

Abstract:The solution casting method was used to prepare polylactic acid/modified nanocrystalline cellulose (PLA/mNCC) composites, and the effects of the mNCC content on the morphology, thermal characteristics, and rheological properties of the PLA nanocomposite were examined. The PLA microcellular foaming nanocomposite was prepared using supercritical CO2 foaming. Furthermore, the foaming conditions were optimized, and the effect of NCC surface modification, as well as the content and interfacial force of nanoparticles, on the foaming efficiency and cell pattern of composites was examined. The results suggested that a sufficient number of nanoparticles increased the nucleation site for foaming and played a vital role in heterogeneous nucleation in the foaming system. An ideal microcellular foaming material with an average cell diameter of 6.97 μm and a cell density of 6.05 × 109 cells/cm3 was prepared when the foaming temperature was 110°C, the foaming pressure was 18 MPa, the incubation period was 2 h, and the mNCC content was 6%.
