Abstract:We consider classical Tsirelson-type norms of $T[A_r,\theta]$ and their modified versions on $\ell_p$ spaces. We show that for any $1<p<\infty$ there is a constant $\lambda_p$ such that considered Tsirelson-type norms do not $\lambda_p$-distort any of subspaces of $\ell_p$.

Abstract:Tsirelson's norm $\|\cdot \|_T$ on $c_{00}$ is defined as the supremum over a certain collection of iteratively defined, monotone increasing norms $\|\cdot \|_k$. For each positive integer $n$, the value $j(n)$ is the least integer $k$ such that for all $x \in \mathbb{R}^n$ (here $\mathbb{R}^n$ is considered as a subspace of $c_{00}$), $\|x\|_T = \|x\|_k$. In 1989 Casazza and Shura asked what is the order of magnitude of $j(n)$. It is known that $j(n) \in \mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n})$. We show that this bound is tight, that is, $j(n) \in \Omega(\sqrt{n})$. Moreover, we compute the tight order of magnitude for some norms being modifications of the original Tsirelson's norm.

Abstract:Invariant norms, also called Barabanov norms, are defined in $R^d$ for any compact family $\mathcal A$ of $d \times d$ matrices. They correspond to the linear switching system, which is a differential equation $\dot x(t) = A(t)x(t)$, where $A(t) \in \mathcal A$ for each $t$. The invariant norm identifies the trajectories $x(t)$ of the fastest asymptotic growth as $t\to +\infty$. It also solves the stability problem. This norm is difficult to construct even for a pair of matrices. We show that in case $d=2$ the invariant norm can be found explicitly for every compact matrix family $\mathcal A$. If $\mathcal A$ does not contain a dominant matrix with a real spectrum, then this norm is always unique (up to a multiplier) and is $C^1$, otherwise, there may be infinitely many norms. All of them can be found and classified.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a Banach function space over the unit circle such that the Riesz projection $P$ is bounded on $X$ and let $H[X]$ be the abstract Hardy space built upon $X$. We show that the essential norm of the Toeplitz operator $T(a):H[X]\to H[X]$ coincides with $\|a\|_{L^\infty}$ for every $a\in C+H^\infty$ if and only if the essential norm of the backward shift operator $T(\mathbf{e}_{-1}):H[X]\to H[X]$ is equal to one, where $\mathbf{e}_{-1}(z)=z^{-1}$. This result extends an observation by Böttcher, Krupnik, and Silbermann for the case of classical Hardy spaces.

We apply it in asymptotic $\ell_p$ spaces, $1\leq p<\infty$, in particular in convexified mixed Tsirelson spaces and related asymptotic $\ell_p$ HI spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we are interested in studying the set $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(X, Y)$ of all norm-attaining operators $T$ from $X$ into $Y$ satisfying the following: given $\epsilon>0$, there exists $\eta$ such that if $\|Tx\| > 1 - \eta$, then there is $x_0$ such that $\| x_0 - x\| < \epsilon$ and $T$ itself attains its norm at $x_0$. We show that every norm one functional on $c_0$ which attains its norm belongs to $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(c_0, \mathbb{K})$. Also, we prove that the analogous result holds neither for $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(\ell_1, \mathbb{K})$ nor $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(\ell_{\infty}, \mathbb{K})$. Under some assumptions, we show that the sphere of the compact operators belongs to $\mathcal{A}_{\|\cdot\|}(X, Y)$ and that this is no longer true when some of these hypotheses are dropped. The analogous set $\mathcal{A}_{nu}(X)$ for numerical radius of an operator instead of its norm is also defined and studied. We present a complete characterization for the diagonal operators which belong to the sets $\mathcal{A}_{\| \cdot \|}(X, X)$ and $\mathcal{A}_{nu}(X)$ when $X=c_0$ or $\ell_p$. As a consequence, we get that the canonical projections $P_N$ on these spaces belong to our sets. We give examples of operators on infinite dimensional Banach spaces which belong to $\mathcal{A}_{\| \cdot \|}(X, X)$ but not to $\mathcal{A}_{nu}(X)$ and vice-versa. Finally, we establish some techniques which allow us to connect both sets by using direct sums.

Abstract:We define new norms for symmetric tensors over ordered normed spaces; these norms are defined by considering linear combinations of tensor products or powers of positive elements only. Relations between the different norms are studied. The results are applied to the problem of representing a finitely exchangeable distribution as a mixture of powers, i.e, mixture of distributions of i.i.d. sequences, using a signed mixing measure.

Abstract:Fix $t\in [1,\infty]$. Let $S$ be an atomic commutative semigroup and, for all $x\in S$, let $\mathscr{L}_t(S):=\{\|f\|_t:f\in Z(x)\}$ be the "$t$-length set" of $x$ (using the standard $l_p$-space definition of $\|\cdot\|_t$). The $t$-Delta set of $x$ (denoted $\Delta_t(S)$) is the set of gaps between consecutive elements of $\mathscr{L}_t(S)$; the Delta set of $S$ is then defined by $\bigcup\limits_{x\in S} \Delta_t(S)$. Though all existing literature on this topic considers the $1$-Delta set, recent results on the $t$-elasticity of Numerical Semigroups (Behera et. al.) for $t\neq 1$ have brought attention to other invariants, such as the $t$-Delta set for $t\neq 1$, as well. Here we characterize $\Delta_t(S)$ for all numerical semigroups $\langle a_1,a_2\rangle$ and all $t\in(1,\infty)$ outside a small family of extremal examples. We also determine the cardinality and describe the distribution of that aberrant family.

Abstract:In this paper we analyse when every element of $X\widehat{\otimes}_\pi Y$ attains its projective norm. We prove that this is the case if $X$ is the dual of a subspace of a predual of an $\ell_1(I)$ space and $Y$ is $1$-complemented in its bidual under approximation properties assumptions. This result allows us to provide some new examples where $X$ is a Lipschitz-free space. We also prove that the set of norm-attaining elements is dense in $X\widehat{\otimes}_\pi Y$ if, for instance, $X=L_1(\mu)$ and $Y$ is any Banach space, or if $X$ has the metric $\pi$-property and $Y$ is a dual space with the RNP.

Abstract:The long-standing conjecture that for $p \in (1, \infty)$ the $\ell^p(\mathbb Z)$ norm of the Riesz--Titchmarsh discrete Hilbert transform is the same as the $L^p(\mathbb R)$ norm of the classical Hilbert transform, is verified when $p = 2 n$ or $\frac{p}{p - 1} = 2 n$, for $n \in \mathbb N$. The proof, which is algebraic in nature, depends in a crucial way on the sharp estimate for the $\ell^p(\mathbb Z)$ norm of a different variant of this operator for the full range of $p$. The latter result was recently proved by the authors in [Bañuelos, Kwaśnicki, On the $\ell^p$-norm of the discrete Hilbert transform, Duke Math. J. 168(3) (2019): 471-504].

Abstract:For each value of $p$ such that $0<p<1$, we give a specific example of two functions in the Hardy space $H^p$ and in the Bergman space $A^p$ that do not satisfy the triangle inequality. For Hardy spaces, this provides a much simpler proof than the one due to Livingston that involves abstract functional analysis arguments and an approximation theorem. For Bergman spaces, we have not been able to locate any examples or proofs in the existing literature.

Abstract:We prove that for every countable ordinal $\xi$, the Tsirelson's space $T_\xi$ of order $\xi$, is naturally, i.e., via the identity, $3$-isomorphc to its modified version. For the first step, we prove that the Schreier family $\mathcal{S}_\xi$ is the same as its modified version $ \mathcal{S}^M_\xi$, thus answering a question by Argyros and Tolias. As an application, we show that the algebra of linear bounded operators on $T_\xi$ has $2^{\mathfrak c}$ closed ideals.

Abstract:We refine the classical Cauchy--Schwartz inequality $\|X\|_{1} \leq \|X\|_{2}$ by demonstrating that for any $p$ and $q$ with $q>p>2$, there exists a constant $C=C(p,q)$ such that $\|X\|_1 \leq 1 - C \Big{(}\|X\|_p^p - 1\Big{)}^{\frac{q-2}{q-p}}\Big{(}\|X\|_q^q - 1\Big{)}^{\frac{2-p}{q-p}}$ holds true for all Borel measurable random variables $X$ with $\|X\|_{2}=1$ and $\|X\|_{p}<\infty$. We illustrate two applications of this result: one for biased Rademacher sums and another for exponential sums.

Abstract:For a normed linear space $(X,|\cdot|)$ and $p>0$ we characterize all $n$-tuples $(\mu_1,...,\mu_n)\in\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for which the generalized triangle inequality of the second type $$\|x_1+...+x_n\|^p\leq\frac{|x_1|^p}{\mu_1}+...+\frac{|x_n|^p}{\mu_n}$$ holds for any $x_1,...,x_n\in X$. We also characterize $(\mu_1,...,\mu_n)\in\mathbb{R}^{n}$ for which the reverse of the inequality above holds.

The Fermat-Torricelli problem in normed spaces

Abstract:The article studies a generalization of the classical Fermat-Torricelli problem to normed spaces of arbitrary finite dimension. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the solution of the Fermat-Torricelli problem for any n points in a fixed space are obtained, and more precise conditions for normed planes and three-dimensional spaces are presented. In addition, examples of the application of the criterion in the norms given by regular polyhedra are given.

Abstract:General $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms are an important class of Minkowski norms which contains the original $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms. In this note, by studying the behavior of the Darboux curves of the indicatrix, we give a characterization of 3-dimensional general $(\alpha, \beta)$ norms. By studying the isoperimetric properties of the indicatrix, as well as the isoperimetric inequalities in a Minkowski space, we give some global geometric quantities which characterizes Randers norms of arbitrary dimensions.

Abstract:The so-called l0 pseudonorm on the Euclidean space Rd counts the number of nonzero components of a vector. We say that a sequence of norms is strictly increasingly graded (with respect to the l0 pseudonorm) if it is nondecreasing and that the sequence of norms of a vector~x becomes stationary exactly at the index l0(x). In this paper, with any (source) norm, we associate sequences of generalized top-k and k-support norms, and we also introduce the new class of orthant-strictly monotonic norms (that encompasses the lp norms, but for the extreme ones). Then, we show that an orthant-strictly monotonic source norm generates a sequence of generalized top-k norms which is strictly increasingly graded. With this, we provide a systematic way to generate sequences of norms with which the level sets of the l0 pseudonorm are expressed by means of the difference of two norms. Our results rely on the study of orthant-strictly monotonic norms.

Abstract:The main result of this article is a rigidity result pertaining to the spreading model structure for Banach spaces coarsely embeddable into Tsirelson's original space $T^*$. Every Banach space that is coarsely embeddable into $T^*$ must be reflexive and all its spreading models must be isomorphic to $c_0$. Several important consequences follow from our rigidity result. We obtain a coarse version of an influential theorem of Tsirelson: $T^*$ does not coarsely contain $c_0$ nor $\ell_p$ for $p\in[1,\infty)$. We show that there is no infinite dimensional Banach space that coarsely embeds into every infinite dimensional Banach space. In particular, we disprove the conjecture that the separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space coarsely embeds into every infinite dimensional Banach space. The rigidity result follows from a new concentration inequality for Lipschitz maps on the infinite Hamming graphs and taking values in $T^*$, and from the embeddability of the infinite Hamming graphs into Banach spaces that admit spreading models not isomorphic to $c_0$. Also, a purely metric characterization of finite dimensionality is obtained.
