Abstract:To evaluate the efficacy of selective neck dissection (SND) in elective and therapeutic treatment of the neck in squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck.A retrospective review was undertaken of 123 patients undergoing 157 SNDs as a part of initial therapy for squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck from January 1997 to September 2001 at this institute. The primary site included larynx(n = 77), oral cavity(n = 29), oropharynx(n = 2), and hypopharynx(n = 15). Lymph nodes were pathologically negative (pN0) in 99 and positive (pN+) in 24 patients. Peri-operative radiotherapy was given to 30.3% of pN0 and 50.0% of pN+ patients. The median follow-up interval was 25 months.101 patients received elective neck dissection, 14 of them (13.9%) found to be pN+, while 22 patients received therapeutic neck dissection, 10 of them (45.5%) found to be pN+. A total of 52 positive nodes were found in 157 SNDs. The distribution of the positive nodes were as follows: Level I 25%; Level II 48%; Level III 25%; Level IV 2%. The 5-year regional recurrence rates estimated according to Kaplan-Meier were 5.87% (95% CI: 0.8%, 10.9%) for the pN0 and 9.2% (95% CI: 0.0%, 21.5%) for pN+ patients.The SND, when carefully indicated, a contribution to the concept of less invasive surgery, offers functional and esthetic advantages without oncologic compromise.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate comparatively the shoulder function, sensory and cosmetic changes after selective neck dissection (SND), modified neck dissection (MND) or radical neck dissection (RND).METHODS:157 questionnaires, which involving shoulder function, skin numbness and cosmetic changes were sent to patients with SCC of head and neck who were treated with SND, MND or RND between January 1997 and May 2001. 32 eligible questionnaires were collected which included 32 patients had 43 neck dissection. Among them, SNDs were performed in 23 necks, MNDs in 11 necks and RNDs in 9 necks.RESULTS:The shoulder disability was least in SND necks (13.0%), followed by MND necks (36.6%) and RND necks (66.7%). Similarly, permanent neck anesthetic were found in 17.4% of SND necks, 36.6% of MND necks, and 88.9% of RND necks. Last, only 17.4% of SND necks had cosmetic changes after surgery, while 90.9% of MND necks and 100% of RND necks had cosmetic changes after surgery.CONCLUSION:Patients underwent selective neck dissection had the least damage to the shoulder function, skin sensory and cosmetic.

Abstract:Asiatic acid is a major pentacyclic triterpene isolated from Centella asiatica. It shows a variety of bioactivities. In order to obtain its derivatives, potentially useful for detailed pharmacological studies, the substrate was subjected to incubations with selected micro-organisms. In this work, asiatic acid was converted into three new compounds: 2α,3β,23,30-tetrahydroxyurs-12-ene-28-oic acid (1), 2α,3β,22β,23-tetrahydroxyurs-12-ene-28-oic acid (2), and 2α,3β,22β,23,30-pentahydroxyurs-12-ene-28-oic acid (3) by the fungus Alternaria longipes AS 3.2875. The structures of the three metabolites were determined by 1D and 2D NMR spectral data.
Pattern of regional recurrence after selective neck dissection for clinically positive neck in mucosal squamous carcinoma

Abstract:Background Selective neck dissection (SND) has traditionally been applied to clinically negative (cN0) necks in mucosal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). We aimed to examine the oncological safety and patterns of regional recurrence (RR) of SND in clinically positive (cN+) necks. Methods Retrospective review of prospective cohort of 206 patients with mucosal SCC undergoing neck dissection. RR was classified as occurring within previously dissected levels, within ipsilateral undissected levels, within unusual locations of ipsilateral neck, or contralateral neck. Results Seven of seventy‐seven (9.1%) cN+ patients undergoing SND developed isolated RR, versus 16.2% after MRND, and 8.7% after SND for cN0 disease. RR was rarely seen within undissected levels of the ipsilateral neck. RR and survival rates were not associated with ND extent (SND vs. MRND) among either cN+ or pN+ patients. Conclusion SND can be safely performed in most patients with cN+ SCC, who do not have gross sternocleidomastoid infiltration or level V metastases.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to compare the prognosis and complications between selective neck dissection (SND) and comprehensive neck dissection (CND) for patients with a pathologically node-positive neck in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue and the floor of the mouth. This was a retrospective cohort study. There was no significant difference between the SND group and the CND group in 3-year neck control rate (86.2% vs. 85.9%, P=0.797) or disease-specific survival (DSS) rate (64.6% vs. 61.9%, P=0.646). Further analyses of the respective 3-year DSS rates in the SND and CND subgroups were as follows: pN1 without extracapsular spread (ECS), 67.7% vs. 72.2%, P=0.851; pN2b without ECS, 64.7% vs. 68.8%, P=0.797; and pN+ with ECS, 57.1% vs. 60.0%, P=0.939. Of note, there were significantly fewer complications in the SND group compared with the CND group (7.3% vs. 20.0%, P=0.032). Multivariate analysis showed that the modality of neck treatment, pN+ status, and microscopic ECS did not serve as independent prognostic factors. SND plus adjuvant radiotherapy is a management strategy of high efficiency and minor morbidity for selected oral cancer patients with a pN+ neck with or without microscopic ECS.
Selective neck dissection for neck residue of nasopharyngeal carcinoma: A prospective study

Abstract:Purpose Cervical residue or recurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is traditionally treated with radical neck dissection (RND). Because cervical residue patients with NPC exhibit better prognoses than patients with neck recurrence, selective neck dissection (SND) rather than RND may be the optimal treatment for these patients. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of SND for the management of neck residue of NPC. Material and methods Between January 2008 and July 2013, a total of 69 patients were assigned to undergo either RND or SND in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery at Fudan University Cancer Center. The patients' clinical and pathological characteristics, complications, and treatment outcomes were evaluated and analyzed. Results Our study consisted of 69 patients, including 51 in the RND group and 18 in the SND group. There was no significant difference in any clinical or pathological characteristic between the two groups. The overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and regional-free survival of all the patients were 79.70%, 61.43%, and 83.30%, respectively, at 3 years and 66.81%, 47.43%, and 78.67%, respectively, at 5 years. No statistically significant difference was found in the OS, DFS, or regional-free survival between the RND and SND groups. The total complication rate was much lower in the SND group (11.11%) than in the RND group. The patients in the RND group experienced longer hospitalization and postoperative hospitalization than those in the SND group. Conclusion SND was demonstrated to be safe and effective for the treatment of neck residue of NPC. The results indicated that patients with neck residue disease who are at stage II to III with a single enlarged lymph node (<1 cm) and only one positive pathological lymph node may benefit the most from SND.
[Selective Neck Dissection on the Treatment of Neck Metastases in 63 Patients with Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Hypopharynx].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze the prevalence and distribution of cervical node metastases in squamous cell carcinoma of hypopharynx and evaluate the efficacy of selective neck dissection (SND) on the treatment of the neck metastases.METHODS:A retrospective review was performed for 63 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of hypopharynx from January 1990 to December 2004. Lymph nodes were clinically negative in 17 patients and positive in 46 patients. There were 15 unilateral SND, 22 bilateral SND and 16 modified radical neck dissections (MRND). Ipsilateral MRND or radical neck dissections (RND) and contralateral SNDs were performed in 10 cases. Forty-eight patients were followed up and the follow-up interval ranged from 24 to 143 months and the median was 41 months.RESULTS:Lymph nodes were pathologically negative (pN0) in 22 and positive (pN +) in 41 patients. A total of 106 positive nodes were found in 95 neck dissections. The distribution of the positive nodes were as follows: Level II 47.2% (50/106), Level III33.0% (35/106), Level IV11.3% (12/106), Level V2.8% (3/106), Level VI 5.7% (6/106). Contralateral nodal metastases and recurrence were observed in both cN0 and cN + cases. There were 18 neck recurrent cases. High incidence of neck recurrence after SND was found in level II and III. The 3-year estimated survival rate analysis were 58.1% for the pN0 and 44.9% for pN1 and 41.1% for pN2 patients. Cox regression analysis suggested N stage was the most important prognostic factor. The risk ratio was 1.7 in pN1 and 2.2 in pN2.CONCLUSIONS:Lymphatic metastases was the most significant prognostic factor of hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Bilateral selective neck dissection, when carefully indicated, offers functional advantages without oncologic compromise.
2b or not 2b? Shoulder function after level 2b neck dissection: A double‐blind randomized controlled clinical trial

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Background</h3><p>Selective neck dissection (SND) is a mainstay of head and neck cancer treatment. A common sequela is shoulder syndrome from spinal accessory nerve (SAN) trauma. Extensive dissection in neck levels 2 and 5 leads to SAN dysfunction. However, it is not known whether limited level 2 dissection reduces SAN injury. The purpose of this double‐blind randomized controlled trial was to determine whether omitting level 2b dissection would improve shoulder‐related quality of life and function.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>Patients with head and neck cancers undergoing surgery were randomized 1:1 to SND without level 2b dissection (group 1) or with it (group 2) on their dominant‐hand side. Patients, caregivers, and assessors were blinded. The primary outcome was the change in the Neck Dissection Impairment Index (NDII) score after 6 months. An a priori calculation of the minimally important clinical difference in the NDII score was determined to establish a sample size of 15 patients per group (power = 0.8). Secondary outcomes included shoulder strength and range of motion (ROM) and SAN nerve conduction. The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT00765791).</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>Forty patients were enrolled, and 30 were included (15 per group). Six months after the surgery, group 2 demonstrated a significant median decrease in the NDII from the baseline (30 points) and in comparison with group 1, whose NDII dropped 17.5 points (<i>P</i> = .02). Shoulder ROM and SAN conduction demonstrated significant declines in group 2 (<i>P</i> ≤ .05). No adverse events occurred. </p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>Level 2b should be omitted in SND when this is oncologically safe and feasible. This allows for an optimal balance between function and cancer cure.</p></section>

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To compare the effectiveness of selective neck dissection (SND) with radical or modified radical neck dissection (RND) for the management of tongue squamous cell carcinoma with clinically negative nodes (cN0).METHODS:There were 33 patients who were treated with SND (including 14 supraomohyoid neck dissection and 19 level I -IV neck dissection ) between January 1998 and December 2002. According to T classifications, treatment modality and pathological status of lymph node (pN), the control group of 33 patients were randomly selected from the cN0 tongue squamous cell carcinoma patients who were treated with RND between January of 1980 and December of 1997. Kaplan-Meier was used to calculate the rate of regional recurrence and 5-year survival rate.RESULTS:The neck recurrent for RND population was 9.1% (3 patients), which was not statistically different from the neck recurrent in the SND population 12.1% (4 patients). Also, the 5-year survival rates were no statistic difference between SND and RND groups (82.9%, 28 patients vs 78.8%, 26 patients). The rate of recurrent outside the dissection area for level I -IV neck dissection population was 0, which was statistically different from the rate of recurrent outside the dissection area in the supraomohyoid neck dissection population (14.3%, 2 patients).CONCLUSIONS:Comparing to the radical or modified neck dissection, the SND offered the same oncologic compromise for patients with cN0 tongue squamous cell carcinoma. I -IV neck dissection was recommended.
Superselective Versus Selective Neck Dissection in the Treatment of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Abstract:Annals of Otology, Rhinology &Laryngology, Ahead of Print. Background:Superselective lateral neck dissection (SSND), defined as dissection of 2 or less contiguous lateral cervical nodal levels, has emerged as a treatment option for metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), in place of a selective neck dissection (SND). There are few studies exploring outcomes of SSND compared to SND in this context.Materials and Methods:This was a single institution retrospective study. All patients who were diagnosed with PTC and had a lateral neck dissection from 2019 to 2022 were reviewed. Patient demographics and outcomes were compared.Results:A total of 136 patients met inclusion criteria. About 106 (78%) had a SND and 30 (22%) had a SSND. There was no significant difference between patients who underwent SND versus SSND regarding frequency of post-operative complications, length of stay (2.49 vs 2.31 days), post-operative thyroglobulin >10 ng/mL (21 vs 3 patients), regional recurrence (14% vs 17%), reoperation rates (16.7% vs 17.4%), or adjuvant radioactive iodine therapy (75% vs 63%; P > .05).Conclusions:SSND for PTC had similar short-term clinical outcomes when compared to SND.

Abstract:Background: The objective of the present study was to analyze the outcome of clinically node-negative early oral tongue cancer after selective neck dissection (SND) versus conventional neck dissection (CND). Methods: A total of 116 patients of early oral tongue cancer underwent neck dissection either SND or CND between 1 st January 2013 to 31 st December 2016 at Government Royapettah Hospital, Chennai, a tertiary level cancer center. For patients with pN0 after SND had no further procedure while for those with cN1 disease, CND was done as a standard procedure. Comparison between the cN0 nodes to pN1 conversion rates in SND group with cN1 to pN0 rates in CND group was done along with the morbidity rates. The clinicopathological parameters along with intraoperative and postoperative parameter relevant to recurrence were analyzed by univariant and multivariant analysis and both the groups were compared by Chi-square test (SPSS version 26.0). Results: In the SND group, pN1 were 2/53 (3.77%) and in the CND group pN1 was 11/63 (17.46%). Mean Nodal retrieval in SND group was 18.96 nodes and in CND group 22.90 nodes per case. Regional nodal recurrences in the SND group were 8/53 (15.81%) and in the CND group was 9/63 (14.28%). Our study shows no significant statistical difference between nodal recurrences in CND and SND group. Conclusions: Our study data suggests that for cN1 patients, SND may be optimal and early tongue cancer patients with cN0 could be candidates for an SND instead of CND.

Abstract:As a possible cavity quantum electrodynamical system, unlike III-V quantum dots, Si-NCs are not considered ideal emitters for emission rate enhancement observations (Purcell effect). Here, we report on direct measurements of spontaneous emission rate enhancement of Si-NCs embedded in a whispering-gallery mode resonator at room temperature. Using time-resolved microphotoluminescence experiments, we demonstrate important lifetime reductions (approximately 70%) for Si-NCs coupled to cavity modes with respect to uncoupled ones. Comparing experiments with the theoretical Purcell enhancement in a bad emitter regime, we estimate effective linewidths of approximately 10 meV through which Si-NC emitters are coupled to cavity photons. Finally, our study provides an alternative method for the estimation of subnatural linewidths of quantum dots at room temperature.

This will hopefully prepare the ground for systematically addressing the open questions in the future.
IIb or not IIb: oncologic role of submuscular recess inclusion in selective neck dissections

Abstract:Objective: Selective neck dissections (SNDs) can yield outcomes that are oncologically similar to radical dissections but with less morbidity. The rate of metastasis to level IIb is not clear, and its dissection involves cranial nerve XI traction and devascularization, causing much morbidity. Our study examined the prevalence and predictors of cancer within the submuscular recess (SMR). Methods: All SNDs performed by the authors were prospectively included from July 1, 2002, to March 31, 2006. Level IIb was sent as a distinct specimen. Results: One hundred fifty-two dissections were performed. Only 12 (7.9%) were node positive in IIb. The SMR contained diseased nodes in 12.2% of N+ necks and 3.0% of N0 necks (p = .04); 23.1% (3 of 13) of laryngeal (1 of 8) and hypopharyngeal (2 of 5) tumours were node positive in IIb versus 6.4% in the oral cavity (p = .07) and 5.3% in oropharyngeal lesions. Conclusions: This is one of the largest prospective studies examining the role of level IIb dissection. It suggests that level IIb dissection might be unnecessary, especially in an N0 neck.
Neck Management of Pathological N1 Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: a Retrospective Study.

Abstract:This study was performed to compare the effects of neck dissection procedures on the prognosis of patients with pathological N1 (pN1) oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), analyse factors affecting the prognosis, and provide a neck management strategy for clinical N1 (cN1) oral cancer. The study patients were divided into two groups according to the neck dissection: a selective neck dissection (SND) group (n = 85) and a radical or modified radical neck dissection (RND/MRND) group (n = 22). There was no statistically significant difference in recurrence rates at local, regional, and distant sites between the SND and RND/MRND groups. The 5-year overall survival was 68.3% for SND and 65.2% for RND/MRND patients (P = 0.590), while the 5 -year disease-specific survival was 70.4% for SND and 75.7% for RND/MRND patients (P = 0.715). Histological grade and postoperative radiotherapy were independent predictors of the outcome for SND patients. For histological grade II/III cases, 5-year overall survival (P = 0.004) and disease-specific survival (P = 0.002) outcomes differed significantly between patients treated with and without postoperative radiotherapy, with worse survival for patients not treated with radiotherapy. Therefore, SND appears appropriate for cN1 OSCC patients, and postoperative radiotherapy is recommended for those with histological grade II or III tumours.
Pathogenesis and treatment of pain in patients with chronic wounds.

Abstract:Pain must be managed during treatment of a patient with a chronic wound. Failure to do so will impair the patient's ability to heal significantly. Understanding the wound's etiology is essential for designing the wound-healing protocol and implementing its pain management regimen, of which a critical part is the chronic-wound patient's self-assessed scores of pain and functionality. In this report we present a paradigm for treating all chronic wounds, which was subsequently applied to 32 consecutive patients. Our integrated-team approach to managing the treatment of wounds includes accurate evaluation of the progression of patients' pain. Directors of the pain-management team and wound team have jointly managed hundreds of patients--either hospitalized or seen in both outpatient clinical practices. The three general categories for etiologies of the 10 most common types of chronic wounds are: ischemia, neuropathy, and direct tissue damage (e.g. pressure ulcers and venous stasis ulcers). Each of these are treated with unique analgesic regimens focused on surgical/medical management of the wound: oral and parenteral medications in combinations designed to facilitate specific additive analgesic effects and nerve blocks and implantable devices for correcting underlying wound pathophysiology. Successful treatment of pain generally results in increased functional independence and improvement of the patient's quality of life. We integrated wound-care pain-management team established guidelines that delineate the causes of chronic wounds and categorize treatment options for practical clinical use. The expectation is that all pain should be resolved in all patients if both the wound-healing and pain-healthcare providers use current technologies and drugs.
Neck and Shoulder Morbidity in Patients with Oral Cancer and Clinically Negative Node Neck Status: A Comparison between the Elective Neck Dissection and Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy Strategies

Abstract:The choice for the most optimal strategy for patients with a cT1-2N0 carcinoma of the oral cavity, sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) or elective neck dissection (END), is still open for debate in many head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment centers. One of the possible benefits of the less invasive SLNB could be reduced neck and shoulder morbidity. Recent studies have shown a benefit in favor of SLNB the first year after intervention, but the long-term consequences and differences in neck morbidity remain unclear. This cross-sectional study aimed to research differences in neck and shoulder morbidity and Health-Related Quality of Life (HR-QoL) in patients with a cT1-2N0 carcinoma of the oral cavity, treated with either END or SLNB. Neck and shoulder morbidity and HR-QOL were measured with patient-reported questionnaires (SDQ, SPADI, NDI, NDII, EORTC-QLQ-C30, EORTC-QLQ-HN35) and active range of motion (AROM) measurements. In total 18 patients with END and 20 patients with SLNB were included. We found no differences between END and SLNB for long-term neck morbidity, shoulder morbidity, and HR-QOL. The significant differences found in the rotation of the neck are small and not clinically relevant.

Comparison of morbidity between sentinel node biopsy and elective neck dissection for treatment of the n0 neck in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract:Background: Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) has been proposed for staging of the cN0 neck in early oral/oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (SCC). Because SNB is a minimally invasive procedure, it is thought to be associated with less morbidity than elective neck dissection. Methods: Sixty-two consecutive patients were included from 2000 to 2009. Two groups were analyzed consisting of 33 patients after SNB and 29 after elective neck dissection. Subjective impairment and functional shoulder status were assessed with the Neck Dissection Impairment Index (NDII) questionnaire and the modified individual relative Constant Score. Postoperative complications were retrieved from the clinical charts. Results: The investigated scores were significantly better in the SNB group. All postoperative complications occurred in the elective neck dissection group. Conclusion: SNB is associated with significantly less postoperative morbidity and better shoulder function than elective neck dissection. This supports our opinion that patients with nodal negative early SCC of the oral cavity should be offered SNB.
The prognostic value of selective neck dissection in early-stage major salivary gland carcinoma: a population-based analysis

Abstract:Objective: This population-based study aims to assess the survival benefits of selective neck dissection (SND) compared to neck observation in patients with T1/T2N0M0 major salivary gland malignancy (MSGC). Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of T1/T2N0M0 MSGC patients who underwent primary tumor surgical extirpation with or without elective neck dissection in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (SEER) from 2004-2015. The impact of SND and clinical variables on overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) was evaluated using Univariate and Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were generated, and survival rates were assessed via the log-rank test. Results: Of 3778 post-operative T1-T2N0M0 MSGC patients, 2305 underwent elective neck dissection, while 1473 did not. Median follow-up was 106 months. Univariate and Multivariate analysis identified SND as a prognostic factor for OS in all the study population. After stratified analysis, we found that in the poorly high-grade (differentiated and undifferentiated) patients, the survival showed a significant OS and DSS benefit after receiving SND compared with the neck observations [HR for OS (95%CI): 0.571(0.446-0.731), P<0.001] and [HR for DSS (95%CI): 0.564(0.385-0.826), P=0.003], other than in the well differentiated or moderately differentiated subgroup. Especially, when the pathological is squamous cell carcinoma, the results show that the people underwent SND had better prognosis, not only in OS [HR (95%CI): 0.532(0.322-0.876), P=0.013], but also in DSS [HR (95%CI): 0.330(0.136-0.797), P=0.014]. The multivariate analysis also yielded encouraging results, compared with neck observation, receiving SND bought about a significant independent OS (adjusted HR, 0.555; 95% CI, 0.328-0.941; P=0.029) and DSS (adjusted HR, 0.349; 95% CI, 0.142-0.858; P=0.022) advantage in high grade squamous cell carcinoma MSGC patients. The Kaplan-Meier survival curves also demonstrated that adjusted SND still had significantly better OS(P=0.029) and DSS(P=0.022) than the observation group in patients with high-grade squamous cell carcinoma of MSGC. Conclusion: Poorly differentiated and undifferentiated T1/T2N0M0 major salivary gland malignancy treated with selective neck dissection demonstrated superior survival compared to neck observation, especially in the pathological subtype of squamous cell carcinoma. These findings suggest the potential benefits of multimodal therapy for appropriately selected patients, emphasizing significant clinical implications.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the indications,surgical techniques and efficacy of selective neck dissection(SND) for papillary thyroid cancer. Methods:The clinical data of 544 patients with early-and mid-stage papillary thyroid cancer(364 cases of stage I,89 cases of stage II and 91 cases of stage III) undergoing thyroidectomy plus SND were retrospectively analyzed. Results:Of the 544 patients,150 cases underwent central(level VI) neck dissection only and 325 cases(59.7%) of SND encompassed no more than three nodal levels.Operations of all the 544 patients were done through transverse neck incision.The overall positive lymph node rate was 67.4%(367/544) and separately,the positive rate of VI,IV,III,II and V level was 54.4%(296/544),44.2%(174/394),45.9%(181/394),34.2%(68/199) and 9.0%(6/65),respectively.The positive rate of level VI had no significant difference compared with than that of level IV,III or II(all P0.05).A single parathyroid gland that was resected by mistake was found in 39 cases(7.2%,39/544) of specimens,and 86 cases(15.8%,86/544) had transient hypocalcemia but no permanent hypocalcemia occurred.Twenty-six cases(4.8%,26/544) had transient vocal cord paralysis but no permanent one was noted.No enlarged cervical lymph node was detected by ultrasound in the 544 patients during the follow-up period of more than 6 months after surgery. Conclusion:It is reasonable to perform SND in patients with early-and mid-stage papillary thyroid cancer.Moreover,SND is a standardized and individualized procedure with a high clinical value.
