Abstract:Mixed mode (I+III) loading induces segmented crack front échelon structures connected by steps. We study this instability in a highly deformable, strain-hardening material. We find that échelons develop beyond a finite, size-independent mode mixity threshold, markedly growing with energy release rate. They appear via nucleation of localized helical front distortions, and their emergence is the continuation of the mode I cross-hatching instability of gels and rubbers, shifted by the biasing effect of shear. This result, at odds with the direct bifurcation predicted by linear elastic fracture mechanics, can be assigned to the controlling role of elastic nonlinearity.

Mind the Helical Crack

Abstract:Catastrophic breakage of brittle materials such as ceramics is usually triggered by the rapid spreading of cracks. Computer simulations have now cracked the three-dimensional details of this process. Evolution of fractures in materials can vary substantially depending on what conditions the material is in. In particular, if only tension loading is applied, the crack generally moves in a plane and the fracture surface is smooth. On the other hand, the addition of a shear stress orthogonal to this plane of crack propagation generates an instability that results in three-dimensional helical crack propagation, atomically rough surfaces and a characteristic fracture pattern that resembles the shape of a series of lances. Antonio Pons and Alain Karma explore the causes of this instability, performing extensive numerical simulations, to understand and predict this behaviour, which is important in a number of engineering and geological materials. They uncover a new law that governs crack propagation in space for materials subject to general stress conditions, as well as a delicate balance of forces acting to stabilize or destabilize the crack motion.
Configurational stability of a crack propagating in a material with mode-dependent fracture energy - Part I: Mixed-mode I+III

Abstract:In a previous paper (Leblond et al., 2011), we proposed a theoretical interpretation of the experimentally well known instability of coplanar crack propagation in mode I+III. The interpretation relied on a stability analysis based on analytical expressions of the stress intensity factors for a crack slightly perturbed both within and out of its original plane, due to Gao and Rice (1986) and Movchan et al. (1998), coupled with a double propagation criterion combining Griffith's energetic condition and principle of local symmetry. Under such assumptions instability modes were indeed evidenced for values of the mode mixity ratio of the mode III to mode I stress intensity factors applied remotely larger than some threshold depending only on Poisson's ratio. Unfortunately, the predicted thresholds were much larger than those generally observed for typical values of this material parameter. While the subcritical character of the nonlinear bifurcation from coplanar to fragmented fronts has been proposed as a possible explanation for this discrepancy (Chen et al., 2015), we propose here an alternative explanation based on the introduction of a constitutive relationship between the fracture energy and the mode mixity ratio, which is motivated by experimental observations. By reexamining the linear stability analysis of a planar propagating front, we show that such a relationship suffices, provided that it is strong enough, to lower significantly the threshold value of the mode mixity ratio for instability so as to bring it in a range more consistent with experiments. Interesting formulae are also derived for the distributions of the perturbed stress intensity factors and energy release rate, in the special case of perturbations of the crack surface and front obeying the principle of local symmetry and having reached a stationary state.

Dynamical Fracture Instabilities Due to Local Hyperelasticity at Crack Tips

Abstract:When materials break and cracks propagate, bonds between atoms are broken generating two new material surfaces. Most existing theories of fracture assume a linear elastic stress-strain law. However, the relation between stress and strain in real solids is strongly nonlinear due to large deformation near a moving crack tip, a phenomenon referred to as hyperelasticity or nonlinear elasticity. Cracks moving at low speeds create atomically flat mirror-like surfaces, whereas cracks at higher speeds leave misty and hackly fracture surfaces. This change in fracture surface morphology is a universal phenomenon found in a wide range of different brittle materials, but the underlying physical reason has been debated over an extensive period. Using massively parallel large-scale atomistic simulations employing a new, simple atomistic material model allowing a systematic transition from linear elastic to strongly nonlinear material behaviors, we show that hyperelasticity can play a governing role in dynamical crack tip instabilities in fracture of brittle materials. We report a generalized model that treats the instability problem as a competition between different mechanisms controlled by local stress field and local energy flow near the crack tip. Our results indicate that the fracture instabilities do not only appear in defected materials, but instead are an intrinsic phenomenon of dynamical fracture. Our findings help to explain controversial experimental and computational results, including experimental observation of crack propagation at speeds beyond the shear wave speed in rubber-like materials.

Abstract:The propagation mechanism of microcracks in nanocrystalline single crystal systems under uniaxial dynamic and static tension is investigated using the phase-field-crystal method. Both dynamic and static stretching results show that different orientation angles can induce the crack propagation mode, microscopic morphology, the free energy, crack area change, and causing fracture failure. Crack propagation mode depends on the dislocation activity near the crack tip. Brittle propagation of the crack occurs due to dislocation always at crack tip. Dislocation is emitted at the front end of the crack tip and plastic deformation occurs, which belongs to ductile propagation. The orientation angles of 9° and 14° are brittle--ductile mixed propagation, while the orientation angles of 19° and 30° are brittle propagation and no dislocation is formed under dynamic tension. The vacancy and vacancy connectivity phenomenon would appear when the orientation angle is 14° under static tension, and the crack would be ductile propagation. While the orientation angle is 19° and 30°, the crack propagates in a certain direction, which is a kind of brittle propagation. This work has some practical significance in preventing material fracture failure and improving material performance.

Abstract:Unstable growth of cracks (rough crack surface and crack branching) in dynamic fracture has long been observed in various materials. Until now, there was no universally agreed upon explanation for these instabilities. Here, we demonstrate that: 1) Due to the non-uniform stress distribution in the cracked body and the expansion of high stress region as the crack velocity increases, a force-bearing cracked body can be treated as a temporary layer-like material (TLLM) with a "brittle layer" that the area of its automatically increases. 2) For this TLLM, it takes only one crack for the stress in its "brittle layer" to fall below a certain value at small velocities. Coupled with the asymmetry of the whole system, this results in a rough crack surface. 3) The "brittle layer" is large enough when the crack velocity reaches a certain value. Two cracks must be formed, or else the stress cannot be reduced below the certain value, resulting in crack branching. Crack propagation can be compared to cars traveling on a road: the high stress region in the cracked body provides a "road" to let cracks "pass ."
Facet formation in slow three-dimensional fracture

Abstract:Cracks develop various surface patterns as they propagate in three-dimensional (3D) materials. Facet formation in nominally tensile (mode-I) fracture emerge in the slow, non-inertial regime and oftentimes takes the form of surface steps. We show that the same phase-field framework that recently shed basic light on dynamic (inertial) tensile fracture in 3D, also gives rise to crack surface steps. Step formation is shown to be an intrinsically nonlinear phenomenon that involves two essential physical ingredients: finite-strength quenched disorder and a small, mesoscopic anti-plane shear (mode-III) loading component (on top of the dominant tensile, mode-I loading component). We quantify the interplay between disorder (both its strength and spatial correlation length) and mesoscopic mode I+III mixity in controlling step formation. Finally, we show that surface steps grow out of the small-scale, background surface roughness and are composed of two overlapping crack segments connected by a bridging crack, in agreement with experiments.

Quenched disorder and instability control dynamic fracture in three dimensions

Abstract:Materials failure in 3D still poses basic challenges. We study 3D brittle crack dynamics using a phase-field approach, where Gaussian quenched disorder in the fracture energy is incorporated. Disorder is characterized by a correlation length $R$ and strength $\sigma$. We find that the mean crack velocity $v$ is bounded by a limiting velocity, which is smaller than the homogeneous material's prediction and decreases with $\sigma$. It emerges from a dynamic renormalization of the fracture energy with increasing crack driving force $G$, resembling a critical point, due to an interplay between a 2D branching instability and disorder. At small $G$, the probability of localized branching on a scale $R$ is super-exponentially small. With increasing $G$ this probability quickly increases, leading to misty fracture surfaces, yet the associated extra dissipation remains small. As $G$ is further increased, branching-related lengthscales become dynamic and persistently increase, leading to hackle-like structures and to a macroscopic contribution to the fracture surface. The latter dynamically renormalizes the actual fracture energy until eventually any increase in $G$ is balanced by extra fracture surface, with no accompanying increase in $v$. Finally, branching width reaches the system's thickness such that 2D symmetry is statistically restored. Our findings are consistent with a broad range of experimental observations.

Abstract:We present a continuum phase-field model of crack propagation. It includes a phase-field that is proportional to the mass density and a displacement field that is governed by linear elastic theory. Generic macroscopic crack growth laws emerge naturally from this model. In contrast to classical continuum fracture mechanics simulations, our model avoids numerical front tracking. The added phase-field smooths the sharp interface, enabling us to use equations of motion for the material (grounded in basic physical principles) rather than for the interface (which often are deduced from complicated theories or empirical observations). The interface dynamics thus emerges naturally. In this paper, we look at stationary solutions of the model, mode I fracture, and also discuss numerical issues. We find that the Griffith's threshold underestimates the critical value at which our system fractures due to long wavelength modes excited by the fracture process.

Universality and stability phase-diagram of two-dimensional brittle fracture

Abstract:The two-dimensional oscillatory crack instability, experimentally observed in a class of brittle materials under strongly dynamic conditions, has been recently reproduced by a nonlinear phase-field fracture theory. Here we highlight the universal character of this instability by showing that it is present in materials exhibiting widely different near crack tip elastic nonlinearity, and by demonstrating that the oscillations wavelength follows a universal master curve in terms of dissipation-related and nonlinear elastic intrinsic length scales. Moreover, we show that upon increasing the driving force for fracture, a high-velocity tip-splitting instability emerges, as experimentally demonstrated. The analysis culminates in a comprehensive stability phase-diagram of two-dimensional brittle fracture, whose salient properties and topology are independent of the form of near tip nonlinearity.

Abstract:Three-dimensional slightly nonplanar cracks are studied via a perturbation method valid to the first-order accuracy in the deviation of the crack shape from a perfectly planar reference crack. The Bueckner-Rice crack-face weight functions are used in the perturbation analysis to establish a relationship, within first-order accuracy, between the apparent and local stress intensity factors for the nonplanar crack. Perturbation solutions for a cosine wavy crack with arbitrary wavelengths are used to examine the effects of three T-stress components, T(xx), T(xz), T(zz), on the stability of a mode 1 planar crack in the x-z plane with front lying along the z-axis. A condition for the mode 1 crack to be stable against three-dimensional wavy perturbations of wavelengths lambda(x) and lambda(z) is determined as T(xx) + T(zz)g<0 where g is negative, with a very small magnitude,for 0<lambda(x)/lambda(z)<1/square-root 3 and positive for 1/square-root 3<lambda(x)/lambda(z)<infinity; this suggests that when T(xx)=0, a compressive stress T(zz) may cause crack deflection with large wavelengths parallel to the crack front and a tensile stress T(zz) may cause deflection with small wavelengths parallel to the front. For comparable T-stress values, it is shown that a negative T(xx) always enhances the stability of a mode 1 planar crack and a negative T(zz) ensures the stability of a mode 1 crack against perturbations parallel to the crack front. The shear component T(xz), while not affecting the mode 1 path stability, induces a mode 3 stress intensity factor once crack deflection occurs, and thus promotes the formation of en echelon-type cracking patterns.
A comprehensive study of nonlinear perturbations in the dynamics of planar crack fronts

Abstract:The interaction of crack fronts with asperities is central to the criteria of fracture in heterogeneous materials and for the prediction of fracture surface formation. It is known how dynamic crack fronts respond to small, 1st-order, perturbations. Large and localized disturbances to crack motion, however, induce dynamic and geometric nonlinear effects that are beyond the existing linear theories. Because the determination of the 3D elastic fields surrounding perturbed crack fronts is a necessary step towards any theoretical study of crack front dynamics, we develop a 2nd-order perturbation theory for the asymptotic fields of planar crack fronts. Based on previous work, we consider two models of fracture. In the so-called scalar elastic model, which is analogous to anti-plane (Mode III) fracture, the stress and displacement fields are obtained through matched asymptotic expansions. A self-consistent expansion is used to resolve the fields near tensile (Mode I) crack fronts. Both methods can be extended to higher perturbation orders. The main results of this work are the explicit 2nd-order expressions of the local dynamic energy-release-rates for perturbations of straight fronts. These general formulae recover the known energy-release-rates of curved quasi-static fronts and of straight dynamic fronts.

Abstract:The rock masses, especially with existing discontinuous joints, are prone to shear failure when subjected to constant changing stress in the direction perpendicular to the free face, which may result in tunnel collapse and slope slip instability in the processes of rock engineering construction. To better understand the effect of various joint geometries on the shear behavior of rocks, the mechanism of crack initiation, propagation, and coalescence in rock-like materials (a kind of cement mortar) with intermittent flaws under shear loading is investigated using both laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. The component of moment tensor is utilized to investigate the temporal and spatial evolution of acoustic emission events and determine the geometry state of the cracks. The major principal stress and velocity field are presented to distinguish crack types and study the stress evolution associated with crack propagation. The results reveal that for specimens with various flaw dip angles the propagation direction of all newly generated cracks is basically parallel to the shearing loading, and the failure patterns of specimens are mainly controlled by tensile fractures. When the flaw inclination angle reaches 45°, the evolution of the thickness of newly generated micro cracks is controlled by the type of stress field, and after peak strength its variation mainly occurs near the tips of the pre-existing flaws. The secondary cracks obtained from the velocity field analysis mainly include tensile, compressive-shear, tensile-shear and pure shear cracks rather than simple tensile cracks, and the secondary cracks appear instantly and abundantly on both sides of the specimen. The work may shed light on the mechanism of slope slip, and provide guidance to the safe construction of engineering projects.

Abstract:Fracture growth in a material is strongly influenced by the presence of inhomogeneities, which deviate crack trajectories from rectilinearity and deeply affect failure. Increasing crack tortuosity is connected to enhancement of fracture toughness, while often a crack may even be stopped when it impinges a void, which releases the stress concentration. Therefore, the determination of crack trajectories is important in the design against failure of materials and mechanical pieces. The recently developed phase-field approach (AT1 and AT2 models), based on a variational approach to damage localization, is believed to be particularly suited to describe complex crack trajectories. This belief is examined through a comparison between simulations and photoelastic experiments on PMMA plates, which have been designed in a new way, to highlight the effects of notches and circular holes on fracture propagation. The latter is shown to initiate from a notch and to be strongly attracted by voids. When a void is hit, fracture is arrested, unless the void contains a notch on its internal surface, from which a new crack nucleates and propagates. Different mechanical models are tested where fracture initiates and grows (i.) under Mode I compact tension, (ii.) four-point bending and (iii.) a tensile stress indirectly generated during compression of samples containing a circular hole. The experiments show that the fracture propagation may be 'designed' to develop in different tortuous paths, involving multiple arrests and secondary nucleation. Simulations performed with an ad hoc implemented version of the AT1 and AT2 phase-field methods (equipped with spectral decomposition, in which a crack is simulated as a highly localized zone of damage accumulation) are shown to be in close agreement with experiments and therefore confirm the validity of the approach and its potentialities for mechanical design.

Elastic instability behind brittle fracture

Abstract:We argue that nucleation of brittle cracks in initially flawless soft elastic solids is preceded by a nonlinear elastic instability, which cannot be captured without accounting for geometrical precise description of finite elastic deformation. As a prototypical problem we consider a homogeneous elastic body subjected to tension and assume that it is weakened by the presence of a free surface which then serves as a site of crack nucleation. We show that in this maximally simplified setting, brittle fracture emerges from a symmetry breaking elastic instability activated by softening and involving large elastic rotations. The implied bifurcation of the homogeneous elastic equilibrium is highly unconventional for nonlinear elasticity as it exhibits an extraordinary sensitivity to geometry, reminiscent of the transition to turbulence in fluids. We trace the post-bifurcational development of this instability beyond the limits of applicability of scale free continuum elasticity and use a phase-field approach to capture the scale dependent sub-continuum strain localization, signaling the formation of actual cracks.

Crack path instabilities in DCDC experiments in the low speed regime

Abstract:We studied the low speed fracture regime (0.1mm/s - 1nm/s) in different glassy materials (soda-lime glass, glass-ceramics) with variable but controlled length scale of heterogeneity. The chosen mechanical system enabled us to work in pure mode I (tensile) and at a fixed load on DCDC (double cleavage drilled compression) specimen. The internal residual stresses of studied samples were carefully relaxed by appropriate thermal treatment. By means of optical and atomic force (AFM) microscopy techniques fracture surfaces have been examined. We have shown for the first time that the crack front line underwent an out-of-plane oscillating behavior as a result of a reproducible sequence of instabilities. The wavelength of such a phenomenon is in the micrometer range and its amplitude in the nanometer range. These features were observed for different glassy materials providing that a typical length scale characterizing internal heterogeneities was lower than a threshold limit estimated to few nanometers. This effect is the first clear experimental evidence of crack path instabilities in the low speed regime in a uniaxial loading experiment. This phenomenon has been interpreted by referring to the stability criterion for a straight crack propagation as presented by Adda-Bedia et al. (Phys. Rev. Letters (1996) 76} p1497).

Propagation Mechanism of Brittle Cracks

Abstract:We employ a recently developed model that allows the study of two-dimensional brittle crack propagation under fixed grip boundary conditions. The crack development highlights the importance of voids which appear ahead of the crack as observed in experiments on the nano-scale. The appearance of these voids is responsible for roughening the crack path on small scales, in agreement with theoretical expectations. With increasing speed of propagation one observes the branching instabilities that were reported in experiments. The simulations allow understanding the phenomena by analyzing the elastic stress field that accompanies the crack dynamics.

Stability and roughness of tensile cracks in disordered materials

Abstract:We study the stability and roughness of propagating cracks in heterogeneous brittle two-dimensional elastic materials. We begin by deriving an equation of motion describing the dynamics of such a crack in the framework of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, based on the Griffith criterion and the Principle of Local Symmetry. This result allows us to extend the stability analysis of Cotterell and Rice to disordered materials. In the stable regime we find stochastic crack paths. Using tools of statistical physics we obtain the power spectrum of these paths and their probability distribution function, and conclude they do not exhibit self-affinity. We show that a real-space fractal analysis of these paths can lead to the wrong conclusion that the paths are self-affine. To complete the picture, we unravel the systematic bias in such real-space methods, and thus contribute to the general discussion of reliability of self-affine measurements.

Penetration of a Quasi‐statically Slipping Crack into a Seismogenic Zone of Heterogeneous Fracture Resistance

Abstract:This paper is concerned with some aspects of nonuniform stressing above a deep creeping portion of a fault zone prior to a large crust‐breaking earthquake. The model that we use involves a slipping crack, representing the deeper, more stably sliding portions of the fault zone, which penetrates upward from depth and is blocked in the lower region of the seismogenic zone. When conditions are uniform along strike, the upward penetration at the crack front is by mode III in strike‐slip fault zones but by mode II in thrust or normal fault zones. Two major results are reported. First, we analyze approximately, via a linear perturbation formulation, how a tectonic crack front encounters and ultimately shears through arrays of localized “asperities” that are distributed parallel to the crack front and have a toughness which is greater than that of adjoining segments of the fault zone. Using a fast Fourier transform based numerical procedure to simulate crack penetration into asperities, we find a notable difference between mode II and mode III crack fronts in that the former penetrates approximately twice as far between the asperities as the latter under the same loading level. This is interesting because observations of slip distribution in large earthquakes suggest that there is a significant aseismic component to the total slip budget in subduction zone earthquakes, which in contrast does not seem to be present in strike‐slip zone earthquakes, and also that the surface slip distribution in continental dip‐slip faulting is typically much more irregular than for strike‐slip faulting. In a simulation involving multiple rows of periodic asperities we note that the more deeply penetrating mode II crack front contacts more asperities simultaneously while breaking them at different load levels compared to the less flexible mode III crack front, which simply breaks one row of asperities and jumps (unstably) to the next. The second major result concerns whether a straight crack front in the lithosphere along a strike‐slip fault zone is configurationally stable, that is, whether the crack front will tend to remain straight as the crack penetrates upward from depth. It is found that for infinitesimal perturbations of the straight front beyond a critical wavelength, of the order of the crustal lithosphere thickness, the stress intensity factor is higher at the most advanced portions of the crack front rather than at the least advanced; the opposite is true at shorter wavelengths. When resistance to crack growth is essentially uniform over the fault plane, this means that the straight crack front is configurationally unstable at long wavelengths. The issue of configurational stability is related to the concept of fault segmentation, which is based on the observation that fault zones, particularly long ones, do not rupture along their entire length during a single earthquake. Effect of a vertical gradient of fracture resistance is discussed in the appendix, where it is shown that a significant upward gradient of resistance to crack growth may completely stabilize the straight crack configuration.
Gravity-driven instabilities: interplay between state-and-velocity dependent frictional sliding and stress corrosion damage cracking

Abstract:We model the progressive maturation of a heterogeneous mass towards a gravity-driven instability, characterized by the competition between frictional sliding and tension cracking, using array of slider blocks on an inclined basal surface, which interact via elastic-brittle springs. A realistic state- and rate-dependent friction law describes the block-surface interaction. The inner material damage occurs via stress corrosion. Three regimes, controlling the mass instability and its precursory behavior, are classified as a function of the ratio $T_c/T_f$ of two characteristic time scales associated with internal damage/creep and with frictional sliding. For $T_c/T_f \gg 1$, the whole mass undergoes a series of internal stick and slip events, associated with an initial slow average downward motion of the whole mass, and progressively accelerates until a global coherent runaway is observed. For $T_c/T_f \ll 1$, creep/damage occurs sufficiently fast compared with nucleation of sliding, causing bonds to break, and the bottom part of the mass undergoes a fragmentation process with the creation of a heterogeneous population of sliding blocks. For the intermediate regime $T_c/T_f \sim 1$, a macroscopic crack nucleates and propagates along the location of the largest curvature associated with the change of slope from the stable frictional state in the upper part to the unstable frictional sliding state in the lower part. The other important parameter is the Young modulus $Y$ which controls the correlation length of displacements in the system.
