Abstract:Abstract Nitrate contamination is a common problem in groundwater of the North China Plain (NCP) owing to overuse of fertilizers and discharge of wastewater. Accordingly, it is important to investigate nitrate contamination in recharge areas to understand the fate of nitrate in the plains area. In this study, the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of nitrate and factors contributing to its sources and transformation in shallow groundwater of the Beiyishui River watershed, NCP, were analysed by a combination of multiple regression and multi‐tracer methods. The nitrate concentration of 79% of the samples exceeded the natural environmental standard of 13.3 mg l −1 , while that of 23% of the samples exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water standard of 50 mg l −1 . Groundwater age estimation of the hill regions based on chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) revealed a mix of young water from 1982 to 1990 and old, low CFC water. The analysis based on the variations in land use in past years revealed that part of the grassland was converted into woodland between 1980 and 1995; therefore, the land use at the recharge time was used to determine which surface conditions influence groundwater nitrate concentrations. Multiple regression analysis showed that point source pollution contributed to the high concentration of nitrate in the hill region. Fertilizer application associated with land use change from grassland to woodland was also related to the present nitrate concentration. In the plains area, the contribution of fresh water from fault fractures and denitrification led to 31 to 72% and 6 to 51% reductions in nitrate concentrations, respectively. Our results suggested that controlling point source contamination and fertilizer input to hilly regions of the study will prevent groundwater of the plains area from deterioration in future years by mixing fresh water into the aquifers and decreasing denitrification, and therefore nitrate concentrations. Abstract:The global public health concern of nitrate (NO3-) contamination in groundwater is particularly pronounced in irrigated agricultural regions. This paper aims to analyze the spatial distribution of groundwater NO3-, assess potential health risks for local residents, and quantitatively identify nitrate sources during different seasons and land use types in the Jinghuiqu Irrigation District, a region in northwestern China with a longstanding agricultural history. The investigation utilizes hydrochemical parameters, dual isotopic data, and the Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR). The findings underscore significant seasonal variations in the average concentrations of NO3-, with values of 87.72 mg/L and 101.87 mg/L during the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Furthermore, distinct fluctuations in nitrate concentration were observed across different land use types, whereby vegetable lands manifested the maximum concentration. Prolonged exposure to elevated nitrate concentrations may pose potential health risks to residents, especially in the dry season when the non-carcinogenic groundwater nitrate risk surges past its wet season counterpart. The MixSIAR analysis revealed that chemical fertilizers accounted for the majority of nitrate pollution in vegetable lands, both during the dry season (49.6%) and wet season (41.2%). In contrast, manure and sewage contributed significantly to NO3-concentrations in residential land during the wet (74.9%) and dry seasons (67.6%). For croplands, soil nitrogen emerged as a dominant source during the wet season (42.2%), while chemical fertilizers prevailed in the dry season (38.7%). In addition to source variations, the nitrate concentration of groundwater is further affected by hydrogeological conditions, with more permeable aquifers tending to display higher nitrate concentrations. Thus, targeted measures were proposed to modify or impede the nitrogen migration pathway, taking into consideration hydrogeological conditions and incorporating domestic sewage, organic fertilizer, and agricultural management practices.

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3-) pollution of groundwater is a global concern in agricultural areas. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the sources and destiny of nitrate in soil and groundwater within intensive agricultural areas, this study employed a combination of chemical indicators, dual isotopes of nitrate (δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3-), random forest model, and Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR). These approaches were utilized to examine the spatial distribution of NO3- in soil profiles and groundwater, identify key variables influencing groundwater nitrate concentration, and quantify the sources contribution at various depths of the vadose zone and groundwater with different nitrate concentrations. The results showed that the nitrate accumulation in the cropland and kiwifruit orchard at depths of 0-400 cm increased, leading to subsequent leaching of nitrate into deeper vadose zones and ultimately groundwater. The mean concentration of nitrate in groundwater was 91.89 mg/L, and 52.94% of the samples exceeded the recommended grade III value (88.57 mg/L) according to national standards. The results of the random forest model suggested that the main variables affecting the nitrate concentration in groundwater were well depth (16.6%), dissolved oxygen (11.6%), and soil nitrate (10.4%). The MixSIAR results revealed that nitrate sources vary at different soil depths, which was caused by the biogeochemical process of nitrate. In addition, the highest contribution of nitrate in groundwater, both with high and low concentrations, was found to be soil nitrogen (SN), accounting for 56.0% and 63.0%, respectively, followed by chemical fertilizer (CF) and manure and sewage (M&S). Through the identification of NO3- pollution sources, this study can take targeted measures to ensure the safety of groundwater in intensive agricultural areas.

Abstract:China's groundwater is facing a significant threat from nitrate pollution. Here we analyzed 2,348 regional surveys of groundwater nitrate levels in China from 1990 to 2020, examining distribution, trends, and drivers. This study uncovers a concerning rise in nitrate pollution, with estimated median nitrate levels climbing from 3.84 mg/L in 1990 to 6.94 mg/L in 2020. A stark contrast is observed between regions: the northern areas have a median nitrate concentration of 8.54 mg/L, significantly higher than the southern regions, where the median is just 7.15 mg/L. From 1990 to 2020, agricultural activity consistently emerges as the dominant driver of changes in groundwater nitrate concentrations, while groundwater exploitation, domestic pollution, and industrial production also contribute to varying degrees. This analysis highlights the urgency for region-specific policies and interventions to address the escalating nitrate pollution in China's groundwater.
Spatial Distribution and Origin of "Three-nitrogen Compounds" in Confined and Unconfined Water of Tuoketuo County,Inner Mongolia

Abstract:Hydro-geological investigation and sampling combined with the groundwater flow field theory, are applied to reveal the spatial distribution and formation mechanisms of "three-nitrogen compounds" in confined and unconfined water of Tuoketuo County.Analytical results show that, NH-4-N concentrations exceed groundwater standards more than the other nitrate concentrations, with an over-limit ratio of 50.0% and 42.9% in unconfined and confined water.In addition, areas with a high NO-3-N concentration (>20 mg/L) are primarily located in the piedmont clinoplain.And the areas with a high NH-4-N concentration (>0.2 mg/L) are generally found along the Daheihe River.The "three-nitrogen compounds" concentrations in confined water is significantly lower than that in unconfined water, and the areas with excessive are also smaller.In the investigation area, the sources of the "three-nitrogen compounds" pollution are mostly agriculture non-point and livestock point source pollution.The NH-4-N concentration in the groundwater is significantly and positively correlated with COD, but somewhat negatively correlated with redox potential(Eh).As such, the reductive environment with a high content of organic matter has enhanced the accumulation of NH-4-N.In contrast, the NO-3-N concentration shows a certain degree of negative correlation with total Fe, total Mn and pH, but is positively correlated with the Eh value, which indicates that NO-3-N accumulation increases when the environment of groundwater was oxidative, iron and manganese inhibit the nitrification reaction somewhat.

Risk assessment of nitrate groundwater contamination using GIS-based machine learning methods: A case study in the northern Anhui plain, China

Abstract:Long-term agricultural activities have affected the sustainable development of groundwater in the Northern Anhui Plain, East China. It is, therefore, important to identify areas at high groundwater pollution risk in the Northern Anhui Plain to ensure effective protection of regional water resources. In this study, 60 groundwater samples were collected from the shallow aquifer of the plain and analyzed for nitrate (NO3-) concentrations. In addition, 10 environmental and geological factors including the elevations, distances-to-rivers, slope angles, orientations of slopes, land cover types, topographic wetness index (TWI), geomorphology, lithology, soil types, and precipitation amounts in the study area were selected as input layers. The light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM) and random forest (RF) algorithms, combined with the geographic information system (GIS), were performed to generate the groundwater pollution occurrence probability maps. The descriptive statistics showed that the NO3- concentrations in the shallow groundwater ranged from 4.3 to 73.6 mg/L. Most sampling wells exhibited NO3- concentrations above the threshold of 18.3 mg/L. The prediction results of the LightGBM and RF algorithms indicated a high groundwater NO3- pollution risk in the southern part of the plain. However, the LightGBM algorithm had a better prediction performance than RF, with a higher Kappa value of 0.84. Moreover, the frequency ratio method revealed that the precipitation amounts contributed to the groundwater NO3- pollution risk in the study area by 38.14%, followed by the elevations, slope angles, TWI, land cover types, and slope aspects, with contributions of 21.4, 13.02, 8.37, 7.44, and 6.51%, respectively. In the future, sampling of additional wells and further anthropogenic factors shall be considered for the development of more effective groundwater nitrate pollution prevention strategies provided to decision makers.

Abstract:Elevated and increasing NO3− concentration in groundwater affect groundwater supplies in China and elsewhere. However, how groundwater flow affects NO3− concentration in groundwater has yet to be fully understood. Herein, multi‐isotopes (15N, 11B, 18O, and 2H) and local indicators of spatial association (LISA) were used to elucidate the spatiotemporal variation, sources, and patterns of NO3− and its response to groundwater flow in Poyang Lake Basin where agriculture, industry and urban coexist. The location of NO3− hotspots identified by LISA tended to move from the middle to lower reaches of Ganfu Plain with groundwater flow, and hotspots area expanded in the upper reaches of Xin River Basin and northwest of the study area during the transition from dry season to wet season. Our results revealed that variations of regional NO3− concentration were controlled by groundwater recharge or flow mode (vertical or lateral), biogeochemical processes and sources (sewage and manure). In some areas with the single stratigraphic structure (unconfined aquifer), spatiotemporal variation of NO3− concentration was influenced by local pollution sources and vertical recharge of current precipitation (vertical flow). In some areas with binary structures (confined aquifer), groundwater was mainly recharged by lateral flow and NO3− concentration was mainly affected by mixing effect of upstream groundwater, reflecting human activities in the upper reaches rather than local human activities. In lakeside floodplain, groundwater NO3− was attenuated by the dissimilatory NO3− reduction to NH4+ . This study provides a novel insight into groundwater flow controlling on spatiotemporal distribution of NO3− concentration in the regional scale.

Abstract:With the rapid development of urbanization and agriculture, land use/land cover (LULC) types are directly and indirectly affected. Nitrate in groundwater, a pervasive pollutant, exhibits a close association with LULC changes. Employing Google Earth Engine, this study aims to elucidate the evolution characteristics of LULC type in northern piedmont of the Qinling Mountains, a region demarcating northern and southern China. By using analysis with multivariate statistics and Spearman correlation, the variation characteristics of groundwater nitrate under different LULC patterns were analyzed. Isotopic methods were used to identify nitrate sources, and the Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR) was used to determine the proportional contributions of potential sources under different land types. The results indicate that from 2015 to 2021, the distribution of high nitrate groundwater had been extended from the western region to the whole region. Groundwater nitrate levels are higher in farmland and rural land, contrasting with relatively lower concentrations in the forest/grassland types near the northern Qinling Mountains. Forest/grassland was negatively correlated with NO 3 − , indicating that plant roots may enhance nitrogen uptake. Soil nitrogen, manure/sewage, and chemical fertilizers were primary nitrogen sources. In addition, the average contribution of soil nitrogen in farmland, rural land, and forest/grassland to groundwater NO 3 − were 48.1, 50.2, and 44.8%, respectively. The mean proportional contribution of chemical fertilizers in farmland is 32.4%. Manure/sewage has the highest proportional contribution in forest/grassland, at 30%. This study theoretically establishes foundation for strategic land management and regional aquifer environment preservation.

Abstract:As one of the most widespread pollutants worldwide, nitrogen has long been a concern in the environment, including groundwater. However, due to the limitations of investigations and study progress, there is still a poor understanding of groundwater nitrogen pollution and its potential effects on human health in many areas, particularly in developing countries. The spatiotemporal evolution of groundwater nitrate nitrogen levels and potential human health risks in the Songnen Plain, Northeast China were comprehensively studied based on both our own test data and available published data that were collected by us over a study period from 1995 to 2015. Groundwater nitrate nitrogen concentrations exhibited significant temporal and spatial differences: there was an increasing trend with time; and the distribution of high concentration areas expanded from the central and western areas to the east with time. The similar pattern existed in the potential health risks posed to the residents considering the two exposure pathways including drinking water and dermal contact. The effects of groundwater nitrate nitrogen on human health depend on the nitrate concentration but there were also age differences, namely, in the order of infants > children > adult females ≈ adult males, according to the hazard quotient (HQ) used in the human health risk assessment (HHRA) model. The spatiotemporal evolution of groundwater nitrate nitrogen levels and potential human health risks indicate that the issue of nitrogen pollution in groundwater in the study area is worsening and needs further attention. The drivers that increased nitrate nitrogen concentrations in the groundwater of the study area were the increased fertilizer use due to the increased cultivated land area and implementation of a land fertility policy by the local government. It should be acknowledged that the results have uncertainties that not only come from the layout of sampling points and selection of spatial interpolation methods but also come from the parameter settings in the assessment model and assumptions of drinking water scenarios. However, the conclusions still have important reference value for groundwater pollution control and management and human health risk supervision and early warning.

Abstract:As one of the largest agricultural areas, the Sanjiang Plain of Northeast China has faced serious inorganic nitrogen pollution of groundwater, but the sources and the formation mechanism of pollution in the regional shallow groundwater remain unclear, which constrains the progress of pollution control and agricultural development planning. An investigation on potential nitrogen sources, groundwater inorganic nitrogen compounds (NH4+, NO3−, NO2−), and topsoil total nitrogen concentration (TN) was conducted in a typical paddy irrigation area of Sanjiang Plain. Multivariate statistical analysis combined with geospatial-based assessment was applied to identify the sources, determine the governing influencing factors, and analyze the formation process of inorganic nitrogen compounds in shallow groundwater. The results show that the land use type, oxidation-reduction potential (Eh), groundwater depth, NO2− concentration, and electrical conductivity (EC) are highly correlated with the NO3− pollution in groundwater, while DO and Eh affected the distribution of NH4+ most; the high concentrations of NO3− in sampling wells are most likely to be found in the residential land and are distributed mainly in densely populated areas, whereas the NH4+ compounds are most likely to accumulate in the paddy field or the lands surrounded by paddy field and reach the highest level in the northwest of the area, where the fields were cultivated intensively with higher fertilization rates and highest values of topsoil TN. From the results, it can be concluded that that the NO3− compounds in groundwater originated from manure and domestic waste and accumulated in the oxidizing environment, while the NH4+ compounds were derived from N fertilization and remained steady in the reducing environment. NO2− compounds in groundwater were the immediate products of nitrification as a result of microorganism activities.

Abstract:Evaluation of the nitrate transport process in the deep vadose zone (DVZ) is important for groundwater quality management, especially in intensive agricultural regions, such as the North China Plain (NCP). The NCP produces ~20% of the total food grain in China, owing to timely groundwater irrigation and excessive chemical N fertilizer applications, and faces severe groundwater environmental degradation. This study evaluated the potential impacts of intensive agriculture on groundwater quality by investigating nitrate accumulation and transport in the DVZ of wheat-maize double-cropping field based on sediment sampling (maximum depth of 45.2 m) over three sub-regions of the NCP. The results showed that legacy nitrate‑nitrogen (NO3--N) accumulated in the DVZ ranged from 118.5 to 6302.8 kg N ha-1 across the NCP; it increased with depth at an average rate of ~157 kg ha-1 m-1. Nitrate transport and accumulation in the DVZ were spatially varied and mainly controlled by the DVZ sediment textures, in addition to water and nitrogen inputs from the ground surface. Coarse sediments retained lower soil water content, resulting in less nitrogen storage; however, they provided greater nitrate transport velocity. Higher transport velocities observed in the alluvial-proluvial fan allowed chemical N fertilizer to reach the water table. However, in other regions, nitrate transport velocities were lower than the water table decline rates, implying that groundwater quality may not have been impaired by chemical N fertilizer. Furthermore, a reductive environment was identified in some areas with fine sediments, indicating a favorable environment for denitrification in the DVZ. The findings of the current study could provide an important foundation for groundwater quality management in agricultural areas, such as the NCP and similar regions.
Characterizing Nitrogen Distribution, Source and Transformation in Groundwater of Ecotone of Agriculture–animal Husbandry: an Example from North China

Abstract:The ecological environment of the ecotone of agriculture–animal husbandry in North China is fragile and the groundwater resources are in short supply, in particular, nitrogen contamination is serious. So, the nitrogen source, distribution and transformation in groundwater need to be investigated. A case study was conducted in Tuoketuo County, Inner Mongolia. Hydro-geological, hydro-geochemical, and quality monitoring of groundwater were investigated in the study area. Altogether, 66 groundwater samples were taken with an equal number from both the unconfined and confined aquifers in the study area. The results show that the ammonium compound (NH4+) was the most prevalent species of nitrogen contamination. Both the irrigations of farmland with contaminated surface water and the excessive usage of chemical fertilizers were probably two major non-point sources of nitrogen contamination. The large-scale dairy farm effluents also play an important role in nitrogen contamination in local areas of an unconfined aquifer. The nitrogen contamination in the confined aquifer was mainly due to the leakage recharge of the contaminated unconfined water. The mean concentrations of NO3−, NO2− and NH4+ in confined aquifer were significantly lower and the areas exceeding the water quality standard were similar but smaller than those in an unconfined aquifer. The spatial distributions, migration and transformation of ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3−) and nitrite (NO2−) in the investigation area were closely related to the characteristics of the groundwater flow system and the hydro-geochemical environment. In the groundwater recharge area, nitrification plays a leading role, with NO3− as the major contaminant. Along the groundwater discharge zone, the denitrification, anammox and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (NDRA) processes may occur, causing NH4+ to become the main contaminant. The Cl– contamination was also severe both in unconfined and confined aquifers. High concentrations of NO3− and NH4+ were mainly observed in the groundwater of Ca·Mg–Cl and Na–Cl types. The background type of water for unconfined and confined aquifers was mainly Ca–HCO3. This study will provide helpful information to identify the most contaminated locations in the study area for environmental management in future and provides a reference for preserving the environment of ecologically fragile areas.

Abstract:Nitrate in groundwater is increasing in hilly areas of the world due to diverse land-uses and intensified anthropogenic activity. However, the key factors that control nitrate in groundwater as it leaches through the thin vadose zone are still poorly understood. In this study, the behavior of nitrate in the vadose zone during a normal year (2015) and a wet year (2016) were investigated in a cultivated farmland (FL) under wheat-maize double cropping and a field of natural vegetation (NV) in a headwater region of the Taihang Mountain. Water chemistry and N balances were quantified to estimate the accumulation and leaching of nitrate. Transport and fate of nitrate in the vadose zone were identified using stable isotopes of nitrate (δ18O-NO3-, δ15N-NO3-). Accumulation of NO3- was mainly in the shallow layer (0-50 cm) under both NV and FL in 2015. After large rain events (20-50 mm/day) during the rainy season in 2015, the leaching rates of NO3- at NV and FL sites were 86.04 and 9.61 kg/hm2, respectively. The accumulation of NO3- decreased 30% and 7% at NV and FL, respectively. However, the leaching rates of NO3- were 63.8 and 22.63 kg/hm2, and the accumulation of NO3- decreased 84% and 43% at NV and FL after extreme precipitation in 2016, respectively. Additionally, nitrate isotopes indicated that the different sources of nitrate in soil water were due to the land-use. However, nitrate isotopes showed that increased nitrate concentrations in groundwater at two sites in 2016 were due to the extreme precipitation. Accumulated high nitrate in surface soil in a normal year and leaching after extreme precipitation lead to increased nitrate concentration in groundwater, which poses a major threat in the future. The results are critical for informing land-use and water management when mitigating groundwater contamination in hilly area.
Quantitative Identification of Groundwater Nitrate Sources and Their Impacts on Riverine Nitrate in Complex Urban Environments

Abstract:Groundwater in the aquifers of Chinese cities suffer from severe nitrate pollution. Accurate identification of nitrate sources throughout the whole aquatic system is the key to the management of water nitrate pollution. This study investigated nitrogen (N) components of groundwater for twelve years, and analyzed the sources of nitrate in the aquatic system based on dual isotopic (δ15N-NO- 3 and δ18O-NO- 3) in the city of Nanjing, a core city of the Yangtze River delta region, China. Our results find that the ratio of nitrate to the sum of ammonia and nitrate in groundwater show an increasing trend from the period 2010-2021. Nitrate concentration was positively correlated with the proportion of cultivated land and negatively correlated with the proportion of forest land in the buffer zone. The relationship between Cl- and NO- 3/ Cl- showed that agriculture and sewage sources increased during 2010-2015, sewage source increased during 2016-2018; agriculture source increased during 2019-2021. Manure and sewage are the primary sources of groundwater nitrate (72%). There is no significant difference between developed land (78%), cultivated land (69%) and aquaculture area (72%). This indicates that the dense population and intensive aquaculture in the suburbs shows a significant impact on the nitrate pollution. The contribution of manure and sewage to the nitrate source in the lower reaches of the Qinhuai River basin is 61%. The non-point source pollution, including soil N (35%) and groundwater N (39%), is 74% over the upper reaches. Our study highlights the necessity of developing different N pollution management strategies for different parts in highly urbanized watersheds. Consider groundwater restoration and soil N management as a momentous long-term task.
Identification of Sources and Transformations of Nitrate in the Intense Human Activity Region of North China Using a Multi-Isotope and Bayesian Model

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3−) contamination in water is an environmental problem of widespread concern. In this study, we combined the stable isotopes of NO3− (δ15N and δ18O) and water (δ2H and δ18O) with a Bayesian mixing model (SIAR) to identify the sources and transformation of NO3− in groundwater and rivers in the Ye River basin of North China. The results showed that the mean NO3− concentrations in groundwater were 133.5 and 111.7 mg/L in the dry and flood seasons, respectively, which exceeded the required Chinese drinking water standards for groundwater (88.6 mg/L) (GB14848-2017). This suggests that groundwater quality has been severely impacted by human activity. Land use significantly affected the concentration of NO3− in the Ye River basin (p 0.05). The principal mode of nitrogen transformation for both groundwater and river water was nitrification, whereas denitrification did not significantly affect the isotopic compositions of NO3−. The sources of NO3− mainly originated from sewage and manure, soil nitrogen, and NH4+ in fertilizer for groundwater and from sewage and manure for the river water. According to the SIAR model, the primary sources of nitrate found in groundwater and river were sewage and manure in the Ye River basin. The proportional contributions of sewage and manure to nitrate contamination of groundwater and river were 58% and 48% in the dry season and 49% and 54% in the flood season, respectively. Based on these results, we suggest that the local government should enhance the sewage treatment infrastructure, construct an effective waste storage system to collect manure, and pursue a scientific fertilization strategy (such as soil formula fertilization) to increase the utilization rate of nitrogen fertilizer and prevent nitrate levels from increasing further.

Abstract:The North China Plain (NCP) has experienced increasingly severe groundwater nitrogen (TN) pollution. However, the factors influencing TN distribution are still poorly understood. Previous studies have identified surface soil nitrogen (TSN) loading and intrinsic groundwater vulnerability (Inv) as the main factors controlling groundwater TN pollution. However, in this study, based on 3245 shallow groundwater samples in the NCP, the multiple regression analysis results(R 2 =0.105, p <0.001) revealed that the TN was not mainly controlled by TSN and Inv. The lower prediction accuracy indicated the large data dispersion of TN, which might be affected by nitrogen attenuation or accumulation. Thus, the NCP was divided into balance, attenuation, and accumulation zones according to the regression equation. The attenuation zone was mainly distributed in the inter-fan and fan edge parts of the pre-mountain alluvial floodplain, as well as the west and south of the runoff area, while the accumulation zone was mainly distributed in the top part of the pre-mountain alluvial floodplain and the east of discharge area. Multi-indicators comparative analysis showed that compared to the balance (Eh= 76.2 mV) and accumulation (Eh=126.7 mV) zones, the attenuation zone has a stronger reducing environment (Eh=30.8 mV) favorable to denitrification, which can reduce the TN pollution (0.49 mg/L) caused by surface nitrogen input and consume more electron donors. Conversely, the stronger oxidizing environment in the accumulation zone limited denitrification, resulting in higher TN concentrations (19.14 mg/L) in the aquifers under the same TSN and Inv conditions as the other two zones. The standardized effects and significance on each path of the structural equation model (SEMs) fully confirmed the reliability of the above zonal analysis. Importantly, the feature importance (23.6%) of random forest and standardized effects (0.455, p <0.001) of SEMs showed that the Eh had the strongest influence on TN. Thus, the redox conditions of the aquifer, in addition to TSN and Inv, played a crucial role in controlling the TN pollution in the groundwater of a large region. The zoning work and the analysis of influencing factors are important to guide scientific prevention and control of groundwater nitrogen pollution.

Abstract:In this study, the formation mechanism and water quality of groundwater in the northwest of Nansi Lake Catchment (NNLC) were analyzed through mathematical statistics, hydrochemical analysis and entropy weighted water quality index (EWQI), and the human health risk of nitrate was also evaluated. To this end, 89 wells in the NNLC were sampled, and the groundwater samples were divided into three groups (I, II, and III) according to cluster analysis results and spatial distribution. The main results are as follows: Topographically, Groups I, II, and III correspond to the alluvial plains, apron plain, and low hills and its front margin, respectively. According to the Piper diagram, the hydrochemical types of Groups I and II groundwater are Na–SO4·Cl and Ca·Mg–HCO3, respectively, and that of Group III is more concentrated, mostly corresponding to the Ca–HCO3 type. Hydrochemical analysis indicated that the development of groundwater hydrochemistry is mainly attributable to water–rock interactions, with the primary process being the dissolution of minerals such as calcite, dolomite, gypsum, and albite. Evaporation exhibited an increasing trend from the northeast to the southwest. Groups I and III presented obvious effects of human activities, with Group I showing sulfate pollution and Group III mainly showing nitrate pollution. Analysis of the characteristics and causes of the groundwater hydrochemistry revealed the proposed approach has excellent performance for classification in areas with complex hydrogeological conditions. The results of EWQI showed that the overall water quality was good, following the order Group III > Group II > Group I. The overall human health risk of nitrate in groundwater was low, but the risk was slightly higher for children than for adults. Therefore, the effects of nitrate contamination should be considered when exploiting hilly and peri-urban groundwater for drinking water.

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3(-)) pollution is a severe problem in aquatic systems in Taihu Lake Basin in China. A dual isotope approach (δ(15)NNO3(-) and δ(18)ONO3(-)) was applied to identify diffused NO3(-) inputs in a stream in an agricultural field at the basin in 2013. The site-specific isotopic characteristics of five NO3(-) sources (atmospheric deposition, AD; NO3(-) derived from soil organic matter nitrification, NS; NO3(-) derived from chemical fertilizer nitrification, NF; groundwater, GW; and manure and sewage, M&S) were identified. NO3(-) concentrations in the stream during the rainy season [mean±standard deviation (SD)=2.5±0.4mg/L] were lower than those during the dry season (mean±SD=4.0±0.5mg/L), whereas the δ(18)ONO3(-) values during the rainy season (mean±SD=+12.3±3.6‰) were higher than those during the dry season (mean±SD=+0.9±1.9‰). Both chemical and isotopic characteristics indicated that mixing with atmospheric NO3(-) resulted in the high δ(18)O values during the rainy season, whereas NS and M&S were the dominant NO3(-) sources during the dry season. A Bayesian model was used to determine the contribution of each NO3(-) source to total stream NO3(-). Results showed that reduced N nitrification in soil zones (including soil organic matter and fertilizer) was the main NO3(-) source throughout the year. M&S contributed more NO3(-) during the dry season (22.4%) than during the rainy season (17.8%). AD generated substantial amounts of NO3(-) in May (18.4%), June (29.8%), and July (24.5%). With the assessment of temporal variation of diffused NO3(-) sources in agricultural field, improved agricultural management practices can be implemented to protect the water resource and avoid further water quality deterioration in Taihu Lake Basin.

Abstract:Identifying spatiotemporal variation of groundwater NO3-N and its primary controlling factors are vital for groundwater protection. This study, under the data scarce conditions and based on time series monitoring data in Dagu aquifer, applied methods including hydrochemical ion ratio, multiple linear regression, support vector regression and grey relational analysis and dedicated to revealing primary controlling factors of temporal variation patterns of groundwater NO3-N. The results showed that agricultural and manure fertilizer are the main sources of NO3-N in north and central area (vegetable farming area), and that domestic sewage discharge and manure fertilizer are the main sources of NO3-N in south area (residential and grain planting area). In addition, results identified the dominant influencing factors of variation of NO3-N in different regions, with human wastewater discharge, nitrogen load amount and water-table depth being the dominant factors of variations of NO3-N in north area, human wastewater discharge being the main factor of variations of NO3-N in central area, and irrigation water and human wastewater being the leading factors of variations of NO3-N in south area. Moreover, types of controlling factors can influence the seasonal variations of NO3-N. NO3-N in vegetable farming area that dominantly affected by fertilization generally shows higher concentration and larger variation range of concentration during summer and autumn than that during spring. NO3-N which mainly affected by human wastewater discharge and manure inputs shows minimal seasonal variation of mean concentration. NO3-N in grain area influenced by irrigation could show more significant variations during spring and autumn than that during summer. The conclusions can enhance understandings of major influencing factors on NO3-N variation in local aquifer. Importantly, the dominant roles of water-table depth and irrigation in NO3-N variation of N2 site (vegetable planting area) and S5 site (grain planting area), respectively, were highlighted.
